We shall dine and sup and meander and rejoice and giggle and guffaw and wander and play.  There is never enough play. We shall gather well before sunset so as to identify appropriate spaces for playing with fire and light in order to make awesome images. Please bring food and drink to share, cameras for making images and any fire and other light equipment that you may have for a proper exploration of the photographic possibilities of Kalinga Park.Fire Spinning & Light Play2015-08-29 17:00:0010

Jeff Smith61,239Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Again, please no dipping into the archives. As always have some fun. Everyone is looking forward to some great selfies. Any questions, We have many moderators in the Art of Self Portraiture Community who can help you along the way. _ UPLOADING The event will be open for uploading photos at 9:00 PM on the Saturday before. Lady Fran W9,024It's the start of the year.  There are new people joining the MPW community every day.  There are members itching to get out and do something.  There has been a rotation of mods. It's White Night and we're all going to need a drink before embarking on chaos and mayhem.   Sooooo ... *let's get together, shake hands, have a drink and talk about the year ahead.* _Venue confirmed:_ Dumpling World 608 Collins Street Melbourne -Call for venue ideas:- -Venue to be confirmed but if you have any ideas then post away. Y&Js and Fed Square venues are convenient but being White Night these will probably be bursting at the seams and potentially hard for a group. Do you know of somewhere else in the CBD that may be a good spot to descend on? Suggestions welcomed.-  _White Night:_ There is no formal photowalk planned for WN as the environment is not conducive for large groups; however, if you wish to use this event as a meet up or tag along with others please feel free to do so.  _All welcome!_ Feel free to invite anyone who you think  may enjoy the fun.MPW 2015 hidey-ho there neighbour2015-02-21 19:30:0016
Paul Pavlinovich25,068See @109173756154545584645 for all the information you need. No formal photowalk as it's too hard to keep a group together. it's really worth your time coming in to the city. My plan is to do Princes Bridge for sunset then lay low until midnight when I'll start to cruise. This plan may change as WN is covering a bigger area this year.White Night Melbourne2015-02-21 19:00:0039

Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,549I'll be celebrating my 50th trip around Sol in January 2015 and I would very much enjoy your company. We'll be starting at 4ish in the afternoon and going on late into the evening with fire spinning and other light play once the darkness arrives. Please bring yourselves, your cameras, a favourite dish that you'd like to share with others, your favourite drinks and any spinning toys you may have.  And orbs.  Don't forget your orbs. We'll be gathering where Warragul Road and Beach Road meet, down on the beach around the shelter near  the pier and groyne. With many thanks to @111907656136306657088 for the banner for this event - I'm sure you'll recognise the fire spinner from our #BrunswalkWithFire  from 2013. The Rantz and the Mario will be doing special fire play - just because we can. More details as they happen to be known. Paul Pavlinovich25,068Now that summer is nearly here I think it's time to return to St Kilda for a summer meander. Have some munchies before the walk. We'll have the usual wander and click but if anyone wants to wander with me I'm happy to explain what I'm doing and why. If the light and sea are favourable I'll be using black glass for long exposures near the pier. I may use it again at Luna Park to make people "go away" for the facade shot. Depends how much light there is. features will include - beach front walk - sunset by the pier - a visit to the penguins at the end of the pier - Luna Park after dark - The espy facade and the two esplanades https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.ka252xbBiZq4 Event updated with the meeting place (St Kilda Marina) and a link to the walk map.summer evening photo walk2014-12-05 19:00:0023

The shuffle will move off at 12.00pm down Collins Street, Swanston Street then into the Alexandra Gardens where it will finish. *Please note that the Zombie Shuffle organisers have requested that photographers don't force the Zombies into bottlenecks breaking up the hoard.*Photo Shuffle For Melbourne Zombie Shuffle2014-10-11 02:00:0040
Paul Pavlinovich25,068You may shoot 36 compositions on this photowalk. you may shoot film or digital it's up to you but only 36. Can you do it? Shooting only 36 will make you really look, evaluate, think "do I really need this shot?". It will make you more deliberate. It will make you hunt for the best light and the best subject matter. You'll find it hard. You'll find it frustrating. You'll find it rewarding. You may post process via traditional or digital darkroom if you choose. If you're shooting HDR you may bracket but you must only end up with 36 images after post. I'll lead a walk around Melbourne (botanic gardens, observatory, the shrine, arts centre, ending for munchies and drinks on Southbank). If you can't walk with us, please shoot the 36 anywhere you want and share the 36 to this event. Worldwide. Go for it. The 36 photowalk - where will you shoot yours?2014-08-31 14:00:0050

Paul Pavlinovich25,068Join us for a walk around Fitzroy from the mid afternoon culminating in the projection festival in Gertrude Street. in the evening.  Meet up at Melbourne Museum west end (opposite Pelham St on Rathdowne St). Carparking in the museum is flat rate $16 or you can take your chances on the street. Given the festival is on I'd expect the inspectors to be out in force. The area is known for its diverse population and wonderful foods. The festival is like the little brother of Vivid and White Night.  Walk Map (in two parts) https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.kNkrZLeCGkyY This is the map for the two part walk around Melbourne Museum, Fitzroy for Graffiti and street photography before there is a dinner break and the Gertrude Street festival. No need to carry your tripod for the first part of the walk. Leave it in the carpark (hidden of course). Get it out for part two if you want it. Fire spinning will be back at the museum or exhibition buildings after part two if it's not ridiculously late by then. While we'll be crossing a meal time there will NOT be an organised meal, we'll break from the walk at 6pm at the end of part one and restart at 7pm for the festival to give people a chance to grab food wherever they want.Flick's Walk - Gertrude Street Projection Festival Photowalk2014-07-19 14:30:0020
Paul Pavlinovich25,068Ok, even though we're not Americans we've got fireworks on July 4th this year too so why not get out and celebrate with a photowalk? I've moved this to under the Bolte Bridge for something different. There is usually parking up this end of Docklands Drive. We'll shoot either from under the bridge or more likely from the wasteland where the circus tent used to be. We'll be very close to the fireworks so wide angle would be useful but not essential. We should be able to get fireworks and bridge and if we're lucky fireworks and city. After the fireworks we'll make our way towards the death star for some night shots. Docklands walk and Fireworks2014-07-04 10:00:005
Paul Pavlinovich25,068We'll be walking from the Maribyrnong River to the Yarra River following as closely as possible the old goods railway line as it originally existed to move goods from one part of the port to another for distribution around Melbourne. Where there are available high points we'll take them to see the lights of the Port of Melbourne, The City on the skyline, and of course The Death Star. It's roughly a 6.5km walk plus detours. The faint of heart can shorted in by diverting onto the Capital City Trail after we cross Railway Canal. We'll meet at The Reverence Hotel in Footscray from 5pm and start the walk at dusk as the lights come up nicely for photography probably around 6.15pm. We'll finish at the pizza shop at the end of Webb Bridge where you can get take away for about $10 or eat and drink within if your pockets are deep. Everyone welcome. Later in the afternoon we'll head to Mentone pub by car for a New Year's toast and a bit of a rest before hitting the beach near the end of Warrigal Rd for some photography around the groyne and the rock. Paul Pavlinovich25,068The November event for your _spring carnival_. Really looking forward to your stuff.November #melbourneunearthed Challenge2013-11-28 13:00:0023
Paul Pavlinovich25,068A graffiti walk around Richmond starting at dimmeys (what's left of it) and a few other spots. We'll also drift over to the MCG for the open day. I was planning on this walk in December for the #melbourneunearthed December theme but since +100735499501780766533 is coming to town we'll run it early. I'll announce the theme later as I don't want to overload people. You Little Ripper Linda - Richmond Photo Walk2013-11-17 13:00:0020
Paul Pavlinovich25,068We'll start at Richmond Railway Station and walk down to the river along Cremorne St photographing the new graffiti on the old silos - there might even be a chance of an urbex of the abandoned site for those who dare then along the river on the North bike path taking an easy pace photographing whatever comes to fancy with opportunities for AAMI stadium (the giant soccer ball). Several options from Birurung Marr either along the river and up the street or through the bells on the elevated walkway both ending up at Fed Sq. We'll watch the race (and photograph the people watching the race naturally) at 3pm on the big screen at Fed Sq. The final stage will be around Flinders St station a touch a street with the race goers heading home. We'll probably grab some nosh afterwards. The route map for this photowalk is published and is found here: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.klc93QZqfSMA For those of you who are taking part in #melbourneunearthed  this walk fits in well with the November theme of "Spring Carnival".Melbourne Cup Day Photowalk2013-11-05 13:00:0019

Paul Pavlinovich25,068This is an informal photowalk after the Digital Show on Saturday Night. From Jeff's Shed we'll wander down to Webb Bridge on the South Side for some bridge and marina evening and night shots then make our way back along Southbank towards Swanston Street. We'll take dinner in the Crown food court. After dinner we'll complete our waterfront stroll along towards Flinders & Swanston where we'll head up around Hamer Hall and The Arts Centre down to NGV where we might play with the windows if they're still on when we get there then we'll finish up for the evening. No route map. No way points. No leaders. No formalities. No give-aways. No competitions. Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,549*First and Last Warning*: _There will be fire - your safety is your own responsibility_. I'd be chuffed if you would join me for a photo walkabout on Saturday, 27 April 2013 in Brunswick, Victoria. We will walk through a number of bluestone laneways, enjoying the street art and also stopping at a various locations for fire spinning and juggling by @111830327627461921997, @115027053902979628958 & @111514735588177976561. There are many pubs in the area and a decision (or decisions) regarding where to head to when the fire play has finished will be made during the walk. For those unable to arrive at the starting time, @111830327627461921997   will be broadcasting his location using Glympse (http://glympse.com/) so you can find the the group during the walk. Tripods are recommended for the fire play shooting as long exposure shots of 3 to 10 seconds are best for shooting this activity.  Recommendations for other camera settings will be offered at the time for those interested. http://goo.gl/tncmC  Brunswalk with Fire2013-04-27 16:00:0021

Paul Pavlinovich25,068Join us for another anniversary walk with all the usual and plenty of new faces from the Melbourne Photowalkers community. Walk starts and finishes at Collingwood Station. Food is available at The People's Market (expect to be there around 3pm) and after the official walk end at back near the town hall many of us will continue to the The Retreat Hotel for dinner and  beer. Here is the route https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212211852192101909727.0004d81878e69719df99d&msa=0&ll=-37.803952,144.990327&spn=0.016598,0.033023 It's not as long as it looks. Note I've changed the times to ensure we can get into The People's Market which is absolutely brilliant. We'll be going past loads of laneways with amazing street art which are not marked on the route (a few are). If you want to make your walk longer feel free to diverge down the laneways. Suggestions: . There is an urbex site - use commonsense and make your own choices . Down the laneways travel in at least pairs - this is a fairly dodgy place sometimes - this means you Margaret Wong!Google Anniversary Photowalk *COLLINGWALK*2013-03-23 03:00:0055

Dedicated souls might like to continue to Williamstown for Dinner, I will be. This walk is in an industrial and park area along the river. An area in renaissance as it is reborn from Melbourne's industrial and ports to residential and small cottage industries. There are river views, port views, bridges, amazing graffiti. At the beginning we'll be treated to a fantastic sunrise over the city skyline directly along the river from our vantage point in Quarry Park. Quarry Park can be entered from Owens St. Very limited parking at both. Parking at Newport (or Williamstown if you're going to walk that far) then car pooling up to the walk start would be advisable. Things to know: . there are no public dunnies you'd actually want to use . there is nowhere to get water . Since its a long one carpooling and making arrangements to get a some cars to the finish would be a good ideaMaribyrnong Afternoon Photo Walk2013-02-02 03:00:1511

For those unfamiliar with the area I''' meet people at the corner of Batman Ave and Flinders St at 6.15pm to walk down. We'll be shooting the sunset (hope for a good one!) then wandering along the North bank of the mighty brown slug until we reach the pedestrian bridge at Flinders St Station where we'll cross to the South Bank for more wandering. I'm certain there will be beer and ice-cream involved.Post WWPW Walk...2012-10-13 09:30:0017

Medusa

This time with some lights on we see the amazing colours.

Having made it home from the WhiteNight overnighter photowalk and injested all my images and experienced a couple of micro sleeps while doing it, I'm gunna do what my brain wants me to do and have a nanna nap.

Being off sick today I decided that a wander in the garden might be nice so I went out with the macro and the ring flash that I got from +Tony Tulloch to play. The sun made my headache worse but at least I got this little native bee fly feeding on the nectar in this dandelion. What having great simple portable light does for you when you're shooting macro makes the most amazing difference and you achieve depth of field that in the past I would have focus stacked for.

Great captures and info from +Peter Novacco who reminds us of the wildlife on our doorsteps

During six mornings over summer I visited Brighton Beach in Melbourne, Australia, around Green Point and Jim Willis Reserve. Many species of native birds frequent the remnant coastal vegetation in the sand dunes along Brighton Beach, taking shelter in the dense undergrowth, or feeding on the many plant species available. The beach is famous for the bathing boxes, though keep an eye out and you’ll spot the well renowned superb fairy wrens. The collection is far from exhaustive, as many species are more seasonal, nocturnal or harder to spot. Though this brightly coloured musk lorikeet is one of the loudest and easiest to spot birds to visit Brighton Beach during summer.___Great captures and info from +Peter Novacco who reminds us of the wildlife on our doorsteps

Tie a string so you remember.
This is a farm fence. It's about not to be. In the background the construction machines are already busy removing the farmer's nurtured and protected soil to ship it off to garden centres for sale while the earth is raped down to the clay so that streets and houses can be built. Have you ever wondered why your housing block amidst the local fertile soils can't grow anything and dries like a rock in summer and sticks to your boots in winter? It's because it's subsoil not topsoil. You have to go and buy what could well be the top soil from your block from the garden centre to put it back so you can grow stuff instead of living in a wasteland that grows nothing. Urban sprawl is gradually eating our food bowl. Soon we'll be hungry.

Telecommunications Rope

Just about everyone in Straya has some of this "generic" telecommunications cable pull rope. It used to be that it would be in the conduit when they put it in the ground or blown through later with air then used to pull the cables through. It was used once and discarded so it wasn't hard to get some from one of the local linesman who usually had it in 20m or so lengths ready to give away not that they ever did that of course. The stuff lasts forever, this one is so old that its yellow has gone almost white possibly from long term UV exposure over the last 20 years or so. It's still strong as anything and still holds the smaller loads in my trailer.

This is about as big as I've seen an Eastern Grey Kangaroo - shortly after it saw me it jumped over the chainlink fence to rejoin its mob inside the reservoir.

Puffing Billy Railway

Best steam railway in Australia. This is the only tourist railway that still runs steam every day of the year except for Total Fire Bans (diesel haul on these days) and the Xmas day holiday. The locomotives are all over 100 years old and most of the rolling stock is of similar age. Puffing Billy is mostly operated by volunteers with a dedicated staff managing the behind the scenes operations and workshops most of whom also volunteer in their spare time. The trip is leisurely and meanders through the remnant rain forest between Belgrave and Menzies Creek including crossing the huge wooden trestle bridge over Monbulk Creek. Between Menzies Creek and Lakeside the train runs through the rural fringe housing and small farmlets. The climb up Emerald bank is 1 in 30 which is one of the steepest railways in Australia. Emerald has a great selection of cafes and things to do. Traveling downhill from Lakeside towards Cockatoo you run through the dry scrub Wright Forest with three more trestle bridges. After a brief stop at Cockatoo the train starts the long hard slog up the hill to Gembrook starting in rural fringe housing and quickly transitioning to rural beef and potato farming with views of the Warburton ranges add you come into Gembrook. Several good eateries, the recently reopened pub and cafes abound in Gembrook. You can ride with your legs outside of the train. You need plenty of time because at 1930's speeds Belgrave to Gembrook takes quite some time. Consider the weather and dress appropriately in layers. Even on a hot day there will be cold spots in the hills.

Kallista Tea Rooms

I really enjoy KTR and go back again and again. Best most relaxed atmosphere in the Dandenongs. Comfy little cafe. Friendly staff. The owner will do speacials on request. Outside tables that are dog friendly. Lots of cool native birds in the trees outside the cafe picture windows. This historic venue is here to stay. Wheelchair friendly double doors and unisex bathrooms.

What a stunningly amazing week we've had. Probably one of our most interactive ever and in excess of what some people refer to as "the old days" of the beginnings of the original community. I'm proud of what we've achieved in this community. The camaraderie and support are no small thing. Well done everyone.

+Terry Corbett brought up a conversation from Facebook which has some interesting ideas (yes, even I went to FB to read it) and the mentorship I mentioned is still open.

Meetups and Photowalks
There were several photowalks that happened over the last week, and a bunch coming up. White Night was simply huge with at least four walks that I was aware of and I spotted plenty of the population of this community out on solos or with a friend or two. Looking forward to your images.

Upcoming
Wed 1st March Frank Yuwono QV Summer Night Market 7pm with Samyang, Benro and MeFoto bringing gear to try.

March 25th - Brunswalk with fire II - +Charles Strebor is back in town and will be leading this one and there will be fire (assuming its not a total fire ban) with his poi and I'll bring mine also.

April 23rd - +The "36" Annual Photowalk - how will you shoot your 36? This is a walk open to film and digital but only 36 shots. This is a walk that started in this community and is now open to anyone in the world.

Meet the Locals
Some great Street coming in from +Jason Boyes who loves his Street photography. To join into this category share your candid impromptu images taken in the street of people you do not know. For those of you a little daunted by taking on people, try statues at first like Jason did.

City
Images from Chris Hodgkins (who I can't plus mention) +Kwanghui Lim (who had a nice little guess the location - game - this was cool - more like this would be great) and +Simon Wilson wondering how some of us are better at others at staying spotless, +Jason Boyes contributed an interesting set from around the arts precinct, +Ian Crocker showed us the Melbourne Time Capsule from times past which makes me think about how we preserve our digital albums after we pass on. +Richard Schipper found that often the gallery is the exhibit and +Jason Boyes let us into his construction world for a moment with his shot of dismantling a tower crane. That's the kind of thing I'd abseil off :).

The Burbs
+Richard Gay headed out to Blue Lotus in Warburton which is an awesome place to go hang out for a day. +Kwanghui Lim found a rainbow above the Telstra tower in Box HIll, +Richard Hallford shared some of his ripening tomatoes (looks like his are late going like mine), +Matthew Conway brought us the sights of Anglesea which until recently was more of an "Away" than "Burbs" but that big new freeway has really changed that. +Terry Corbett found some colourful street art, and I made a crack about ICE in St Kilda.

Away
+Tony Tulloch sparked a conversation about how many Mt Eccles with his post from there and +Richard Hallford shared steps to the sea along with +Richard Reeve following some unspoken Richard Photo Theme of water with his Paradise Falls, +Linda Ripper brought a little Brisbane pier to the mix and +Susan Menis remembered Paris.

Impromptu
+Richard Schipper has been at the Geelong antique market this week. It would be good to see some more use of this category to get together socially and collaborate.

Challenge
Last week was Night Lights and because it was it was set so late in the week and because plenty of us have shots to use its going to stay in place this week for a bit of a double header.

I brought a White Night image, +Richard Hallford brought us a White Night of a different kind.

Film
Quiet this week.

I thought I'd recap our meetup from last night for White Night. White Night was started in Paris France and is celebrated now by 20+ cities around the world. It's a single night running from dusk (7pm) to dawn (7am) and celebrates many different forms of the arts. You can find out more about Melbourne's White Night on their website https://whitenightmelbourne.com.au/ I've been to all of them over the last five years, the first was simply unexpected and amazing with the others never living up to the hype generated by the first one until this year, I think the organisers got the balance right and the spread of arts and exhibits was good and it was possible to escape the crowds easily to move from place to place.

The official walk was from 12 midnight to 7am finishing with breakfast. I went in early with a good mate and we started with dinner at The Pumphouse Hotel in the Monkeybar.

The food was good and for the most part the service was good and pleasant although it was tempered by the initial greeting.

After that we did a scouting walk to see where the main exhibits were before the main walk started. First up we headed into Melbourne Museum which had selected exhibits open for free as part of White Night including this one about Australia's indigenous Aborginal people called Bunjilaka. The exhibit is excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to understand more. One of the exhibits is this animated bird that is lit via projection and moves to a voice over explaining the stories and history. You can find out more here https://museumvictoria.com.au/bunjilaka/whats-on/First-Peoples/

We took our time and checked out quite a few of the arts on offer taking part in an interactive piece called Purple Rain in honour of Prince

We wandered some more and were joined by another Melbourne Local Guide then headed back to the meeting point for the midnight walk to start.
White Night is divided into several precincts and I'll convey just a few of the images here

We finally finished up in Melbourne's famous DeGraves Street which is a narrow crowded alley with around 20 different cafes to choose from. At 6.30am only one was up and running so we went to that once. Pleasingly they had a Big Breakfast (eggs, bacon, ham, tomato, mushrooms, spinach). It would have been nice to be more choosey because we knew they only had an average of 2.1 and I have to say their food didn't disappoint - that 2.1 is about right although I was generous and gave them a 3.

In hindsight I was probably too generous, but I'll leave it stand for now.
The last of the people in the meetup made their way to Flinders Street Station (our main railway hub station) to make our separate ways home. After catching up on socials and a few microsleeps I made it home safely and judging by the posts so have the others.___

Most grand from +Joel Bramley

Last night I was at Lake Weeroona in Bendigo (unplanned) for a another sunset, only had a small tripod with me but it did the job. I was sitting on the ground with next to my camera getting long exposure photos though the wires of the fence. This photo is made from 4 images each one capturing for 40 seconds with the help of a 10 stop ND plus CLP filter. If the Boardwalk had some lights on this shot would have been that much better.

So what's in the bag for tonight?

You're on your feet alot at WhiteNight so take only the minimal. I'm using my standard small bag the top opening Think Tank 7. The sling or messenger style are best, you don't have room to access your big backpack in the crowd.

I'm taking two lenses, the 7-14 (crop factor 14-28) which I'll use for lit buildings. This lens is ultra wide bit it's not a fish so you get good straight lines. My second is my Goto lens the 12-40 (24-80) which I'll have on the camera most of the time. Both of these are f/2.8 which is really helpful at night.

I've got a spare battery and both are fully charged. I'm taking three cards but I doubt I'll use more than one, the others are to backup in case of failure.

I've got a lens cloth and yes in the bag that's dunny paper. When you get a million people in the city at night the dunnies are pushed to their limits and run out of paper.

Of course Mario is coming and the cat is staying home.___

Shooting at WhiteNight tonight?

I'm going to share my approach to shooting at night which will help those who aren't usually shooting in the dark.

1. Don't be afraid of high ISO - it's important to know your machine's capabilities and your own personal taste. This shot is at 1600.
2. Expose for the light, not the dark - I use manual exposure with the histogram and do some manual bracketing to find the right sweet spot for each image. If you're not comfortable in manual, then use spot metering on the most important part of the subject for you.
3. Watch your shutter speed, I know I can reliably go to about 1/6th for great sharpness and with the E-M1 II I can actually go out to 1 full second if I brace myself on a tree, pole or building. If you don't have the most amazing IS then stick to 2 times the focal length you're shooting at (e.g.... more »

4. Shoot wide - zooming in makes it much harder to maintain steadiness with long shutter openings
5. Go light - take only the absolute minimal gear - you're going to be on your feet a lot.___
