The frustration of social networks

I have been running a photography network site for 11 years ePHOTOzine.com. One of the main grumbles is the activity of the clickers and cliques. This is a name given to those who vote on each others pictures not always because they are good photos, but because the person they are voting on is a friend / followed person. I was hoping Google + may have found the answer, but a year on and it's just like all the other sites of this kind - if anything, because of circle sharing, it's worse.

I'd never really understood how the clique phenomenon could be so irritating to photographers, but here on G+ it can be really infectious. All the "check out this brilliant circle" or "look at this great photographer" posts. If you're not included, and you feel the photographers included are not as good as you it's easy to feel... more »

Highland Cow, up close...I was using a 10mm lens and those into photography will appreciate that at such distance you would feel her breathe on your face. She had flies irritating her so she wafted her head from side to side...and the horn caught my camera. Photo cropped and tilted horizon to add drama

The individual frames of a star trail shot on an Olympus OM-D put to the beat of a chillout song...with a bit of colour adjustment in Sony Vegas at the chorus. Each frame was a two minute exposure. The clouds appeared half way through the shoot and actually work well on individual shots but ruined my attempt at a full star trial photo.

My favourite shot of fungi to date. Do you think it has a cinematic feel? It was taken using a really old Canon 50mm macro attached to my Olympus OM-D. The forest floor was in the shade so I used a Manfrotto Maxima LED light to illuminate the fungi. This is with a few tiny tweaks how it came out of the camera.

If you're not included, and you feel the photographers included are not as good as you it's easy to feel the affect.

So how do you get a site that actually projects photography and photographers who are really good and not just popular? Is it possible?

To get along do you almost have to become a prostitute to your art?

My response to those who complain on ePHOTOzine is that in life you don't get recognised for being quiet. So in a pub/bar analogy if you walk up to the bar, buy a drink, sit down, drink it and leave without saying anything to anyone you may not get much reaction the next time you turn up. But if you walk in, say hello to several people on the way to the bar, strike up conversation with the bar man, buy him a drink, and complement a few people on their dress sense, you may get a reaction next time, and possibly a free drink.

After 11 years I thought I was oblivious to it, but occasionally when I see a hugely circled person who's photography is generally very average I wonder how many free drinks were needed to get there.

One of the flaws in circles is people tend to see a circle promoted and click it without looking at who is in that circle (most are too busy to look through and cherry pick), so some circles become widely circulated. And the promotion snowballs. The next thing you know Google is wrongly saying these are the best photographers they have.___
