Fields of Green
Palouse Region, Washington

I headed out with +Grant Meyer  last night despite feeling poorly from some bad food on my return trip up from Peru (I again blame LAX). Socked in for most of the day we decided to give it a shot anyways and for a few pockets in the afternoon were rewarded with some good light on the hills.
While most people stuck to the roadside pullouts Grant and I headed down the hill to get a closer perspective and it payed off. Looking forward to hitting up some other locations now that most areas are popping with green and things are warming up a bit!

Bountiful
Vik, Iceland
Roughly 3am, we'd been driving through rain and foggy conditions and we cross over into Vik to find a break in the clouds above the church. Just as we roll in we realized we've popped a tire on the Land Cruiser but that's the last thing on our minds. Light stuck around for about an hour and it was a welcome end before wrenching off a tire in the parking lot then crashing out for a well deserved rest.

Bruarfoss I
Iceland 2015

I figure its fitting to start with an image from the beginning of my 22 day adventure in Iceland and Norway. Just after getting in to camp in Grindavik and napping, we headed off to one of my personal favorites in the country - the color tones of this set of falls as well as its mix of cascades is always a fun one to make a return stop.

We're working on launching the dates for 2016's summer tour of Iceland, if you're interested drop me a message for updates and more!

Chasing the Midnight Sun
Skagsanden Beach, Flakstoya, Norway

18 days.  18 days since I last saw the night sky.  Its been a whirlwind trip helping lead an adventure tour across Iceland and now finishing up a stint in Norway chasing the midnight sun.  Its all been a bit surreal due to the days seeming endless and the time I've been away from home.

Rain and a little bit of exhaustion has us winding down in a hotel, so what better time to backup and preview some of the gems from the trip.  Here's a sneak peek of something I'll be working on once I'm home (aka gang this is NOT the final image) that will be going into some fresh writing material for you as well.

Two. Two more sleeps til home.

Down the Chute
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Looking forward to heading out to the Smokies this July with the guys of +Mountains To Sea Workshops for my first workshop collaboration them! I still love getting back to my 'backyard' and wandering the trails and streams of the Appalachians, so I can't wait to revisit this area and share some great locations and photography knowledge with our group.

We've got a few spots remaining for this weekend photographing and exploring one of America's most beautiful national parks.

Brace yourselves, spring is coming

I usually am the cold weather junkie but for once I'm really eager for spring to arrive and the lushness of the landscape to return once again.  Here's one from the archives from the Palouse, I love the land boundary in this one breaking up the rolling hills.

I've go a new website up and running thanks to the folks over at +Squarespace where I'll be not only housing my portfolio but I have a blog that will be seeing frequent contribution as well as workshop announcements and fine art print sales.

The Mountain

The mighty Kirkjufell, or 'church mountain' in western Iceland is an iconic feature on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This was our first major stop on our visit in September and mother nature went from teasing us with potential for nice light to moody clouds as rain and high winds began to beat us down that evening.

Regardless of the weather I was loving the dark mood here coupled with the good water flow from the cascades above the waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss. A 2 second exposure time on the tripod here gave me some silky smooth water to go along with all the darkness that was rolling in.

I can't wait to get back to Iceland this summer, I love everything about this country! Are you coming with me ?

The Nun of Preah Khan
Cambodia

I never thought I'd find myself typing these words. "I enjoy taking photos of people."  Yeah, hard to believe isn't it?  That being said, I'm not running people down in my local town to grab a snapshot, but while traveling abroad the human element is one of the most compelling parts of my journey.

This Buddhist nun was sitting inside Preah Khan temple, offering blessings to those who passed.  I thought her facial features and expressions just teemed with so much character that I had to get her photo.  After taking a few shots I said thank you and was about to leave when she grabbed my hand and proceeded to bless me.  As she was performing the blessing her eyes became wide and intense, it was definitely one of my favorite moments from the trip.

I can't wait to go back to Cambodia, I think it has now unlocked my desire to travel in Asia and see what the region has to offer.  I have a feeling it may become one of my favorite places.

Cheers!

While my time there was only with our students, I still was able to see some of the quintessential attractions from around the Golden Circle.  One of my favorite things was definitely the multitude of Icelandic horses we saw from our drive through the western and southern portions of the island.  I was quite fond of this girl, her pattern and color was striking and the light breeze kicking up her mane couldn't have been better!

I will be heading back to Iceland this summer with +Colby Brown to help out with his adventure tour where we'll be chasing the midnight sun all across the countryside.  I'm thrilled about the idea of hours of sunrise and sunset light coupled with such a wonderful landscape and the opportunity for some personal exploration beyond the tour itself.  Will you be there this summer?

Day One*

On the road in Iceland! Back in action with +Colby Brown and a great group of workshop participants. Last night we hit up Kirkjufellsfoss which had some great flow and didn't disappoint. Heading back south today, more to follow from behind the scenes.

Envy
The Palouse region, Washington

I can't believe how fast time has gone, it feels like we just moved to the Palouse area a few months back.  Now in the coming weeks I'll be packing and purging our apartment to prepare for the journey 3,000 miles east back to Raleigh, North Carolina.

I am super stoked to be back with family and close friends while in the process of planning our wedding in 2015.  I will definitely miss having wonderful photo ops less than an hour's drive from my front door.  People come from all over to see this area and for good reason - it boasts wonderful views and varied compositions from many of the popular locations as well as fun adventures down single track backroads through what I consider classic 'Americana.'

Here's another take from an afternoon at Steptoe Butte, the classic photo spot roughly centralized in the region.  Long lenses reign supreme here, so big props to +LensRentals.com for always taking care of me with my requests :) I'll hopefully be squeezing in some posts of shots taken with the 100-400 before having to send her back in.___

Tree of Life

This split cottonwood gets a lot of press viewed way up from Steptoe Butte but I had the chance to check it out up close and personal this morning.  The area beside the tree has been left fallow this season which takes away some of the photo angles of this charismatic tree.  Needless to say, I gave it my best shot.  There's not much for foreground in a sea of wheat fields, but the lighting on the tree and the crops still made for a solid image.  This was processed using +Sean Bagshaw 's 32 bit HDR merge from 5 files.

I hope you enjoy!

Enter the Sun

Sorry for the repost, but a suggested crop made this much better so I had to do it

I'm still not use to the super early alarm for sunrise here in Washington... I always used to grumble when getting up around 4:45 back in North Carolina - now its something like 3:45 But, hey, its totally worth it. Today was a mostly clear morning so I was angling for some warm orange light creeping in this spot below Steptoe Butte. Some wildflowers linger on the closest ridge as nearly all the fields have been worked and the wheat and other crops are growing fast.

I'll be heading back out this afternoon and most mornings over the next few weeks to shoot along 195. If anyone is out and about, feel free to drop me a message.

Happy Monday!

Endless Fall
Uncompahgre National Forest, CO

A throwback from a few years ago, the last real fall colors I shot while visiting southwest Colorado.  This trip will always stick in my mind because I spent 10 days battling a relapse in a sinus infection coupled with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) at my own stubbornness.  I decided to push myself from 375 ft in elevation to 10,800 ft in a matter of 10 hours. :)  Oh the things we'll do for photography!

I will be posting some BTS shots while I am in Peru starting this weekend but until I am back, I'll be mostly off the grid.  For the most up to date trip reports, feel free to find me on Instagram (peytonhale).

Our video project in Yosemite National Park with Nomadik Motion is winding down as we head to Glacier Point tonight for some alpine scenery and grand vistas to add into the footage.

Coming up on May 3rd +Colby Brown  is hosting a public photo walk (and I'll be giving him a hand) in the valley starting at 3:30 on May 3rd at Lower Yosemite Falls. We will be doing a small loop around the valley covering Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Sentinel Bridge and Swinging Bridge before walking along the Merced River back to the Lower Falls.
If you are in the Bay area or around Yosemite be sure to come out!
Here's a quick edit in Lightroom 5 + Silver Efex 2 of the classic Tunnel View with some nice elements hanging round late afternoon following the spring snow storm. Looking forward to also finalizing this one in Photoshop.

Celebrating #Yosemite150  - The designation of the Yosemite Land Grant

I'm currently in +Yosemite National Park  with +Colby Brown  and Nomadik Motion (www.nomadikmotion.com) working on a short video piece covering the 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Land Grant.  This designation by President Lincoln in 1864  was the first of its kind and permitted protection of Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley for the enjoyment of the people.

We were fortunate to have a late spring snow storm roll through the mountains which made for some fun shooting conditions yesterday morning.  Here's a quick edit in Lighroom from my laptop of Yosemite Falls kissed with some snow and a little fog in the mix (can't wait to edit this on the calibrated monitor!).

I got the chance to check out the new HTC One M8 while in Alberta with +Colby Brown  and I must say this is a sleek looking smartphone with some nice upgrades from the original. I had the original +HTC   One and it was a game changer for me coming over to Android from iOS.

So if you're interested in whats new with HTC, take a moment to check out Colby's in depth review.

Full In-Depth Review of the just announced HTC One M8

Just a few moments ago, +HTC announced the successor to the popular HTC One Android phone, officially known as the HTC One M8. For the past two months I have been using a near final version of their latest flagship phone, taking it with me to Iceland, the Canadian Rockies and Hawaii to accompany me on a few of my adventures. The result is an in-depth look at the new phone, its strengths, weaknesses and my overall thoughts as a photographer. Enjoy!

Northern Lights

Sorry for the new upload, had to fix the crappy quality upload.  Thanks for the tip.

On a recent winter trip to Iceland, I was fortunate enough to see a few good displays of the aurora, which was the main reason for the trip. Chasing the aurora can be quite challenging, since it is based not only on the aurora forecast, but also cloud forecast, as well as the direction of the display. On this particular evening my main composition was setup facing to the right of this shot, just waiting for the aurora to show up, but it turned out to be the best in another direction. I quickly tried to find a composition to take advantage of the display while it lasted.___Yeah, nailed it. #somuchforshootingaurora

Vermilion Morning

Best viewed on black

I've been hung up on this image for a while, its been my 'white whale' so to speak... Such a spectacular sunrise has become a tough image to process!  I think for now this is as far as my workflow will let me go, so I'm polishing up my skills with processing tutorials and trying to break past this plateau or 'processing slump' that I've been hitting with images from Canada.

I hope you enjoy this rendition, I'm sure it will evolve into something better once I can push my abilities!

Freeze Frame
Abraham Lake, Alberta

Just now sorting and selecting work to process from 10 days in the Canadian Rockies.  Beyond the grandeur of massive peaks and wild land that surrounded us, the fine details in the ice were something I really wanted to capture.  These bubbles are formed in numerous lakes in the Canadian Rockies, but most famous from Abraham as access is simple and the Chinook winds often keep the lake clear of any snow accumulation.

Cheers!
