Samantha Villenave1,065,352+Art+Talk #16, an interview with +Kurt Ankeny, hosted by myself and +Lena Levin .I asked Kurt for a bio. What he gave me are these beautiful words."I like to describe myself as an autodidact, but that's not really true at all. If anything, I'm a bibliodidact. Some of the works most important to my formation were How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Those two were my lifeline for many critical years of development. In fact, I had given away my copy of Anatomy Lessons,  when I started recognizing images from it in the paintings I was looking at. I hadn't realized how deeply those images penetrated. So I had to buy myself a replacement copy. Here's a problem I have: all writing about art tends to circumvent the art itself. I'm not saying one shouldn't write about art, but it's deceptive to cement into prose a reaction to a piece that depends wholly on the time, circumstances, education, experience, and readiness of the individual viewer looking at it and reacting or responding. So, what you have a is a snapshot of a very, very narrow point where two individuals connected for a moment in time.So those qualms aside, I'm a relatively new painter. I've only been painting for about seven years. Four of them what I would consider "full-time". Painting, as most of us who practice with any determination and ambition know, is a very slow burn. Cy Twombly told Jenny Saville to try and remain ignored for as long as possible. And that is good advice as long as one can manage it. Because painting, especially since the modernist movement, is a vast ocean of possibilities and it takes many canvases to get your bearings.I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I really don't know what I'm doing yet. I know, I know. One isn't supposed to undercut one's brand and reputation with such nonsense and honesty. "I don't know what I'm doing" does not mean "I don't know where I'm going." I do have plans, I have grand ideas and ambitions. It's just that there's a lot of white space on the map between where I stand now and Mount Accomplishment. I think that the fissure between abstraction and figuration is an obvious point of interest. Today's painters are swarming on that likeArt+Talk interview with painter Kurt Ankeny2012-11-04 20:00:0023

I generally keep an eye on comments from viewers and try to bring their remarks into our conversation. After 30 minutes, I will invite from those who have RSVPed YES  to the event (and whose profiles I have vetted, meaning I know you, or I can tell from your profile that you are an artist or art lover), into the The New and Improved Art+Talk Hangout on Air interview with Hrag Vartanian2012-11-03 16:00:0064
Samantha Villenave1,065,352+Max Rubenacker is going to be the guest artist for this Sunday's upcoming +Art+Talk  hangout on air, and I'll be joined in my efforts of interrogation interviewing by former +Art+Talk guest and designer +Aaron Wood. Max is a mad scientist, a geek with an art degree. His art happens in the small spaces between the cracks of the world. He's enjoyed a long obsession with photography, 3D, and any weird digital process he can get his hands on. A suspected synaesthetic, he has actively been using sound to make visual art since 2009.************************************************************************************************How the Hangout works:For the first 30 minutes of the hangout, it will be just Max, Aaron, and I, and the hangout will be streamed from this page, as well as on hangoutnetworks.com. You're welcome to watch, and use the comments section underneath the hangout, which will be streamed here on the event, as a chat, for any questions that you may have for Rodney. I generally keep an eye on comments from viewers and try to bring their remarks into our conversation. After 30 minutes, I will invite those who have RSVPed YES  to the event (and whose profiles I have vetted, meaning I know you, or I can tell from your profile that you are an artist or art lover), into the actual Hangout, to join in on the conversation. RSVPing doesn't not mean you are required to come, but if you think you may want to, it is a way if insuring that you will receive an invite. It'll also guarantee that you get a reminder for the hangout, whether you should choose to watch or join. Please be aware that the hangout is an interview withMax, and please join only if you are interested in discussing art and Max's work. :)I also ask that you have a camera, and a microphone if you would like to join. Headphones, while not required, are preferred, as it limits the risk of renegade background noise. Thanks you to the artists in the community who have sent feedback. I appreciate it! :)************************************************************************************The hangout will also be recorded, so you are welcome to watch later, here, on YouTube, hangoutnetworks.com , or the Art+Talk Interview with Mad Scientist Max Rubenacker2012-10-07 20:00:0042

I'm glad you asked! :)Artists, simply share work of your own, a painting, a drawing, a sculpture, an illustration, and add the hashtag #FirstFridayArtWalk  . The Art Walk is open to non-photographic work, in traditional, and digital media. Artists and non-artists alike are welcome to reshare the work of other artists with the #FirstFridayArtWalk  hashtag as well. Please feel free to invite artists and others that you feel may be interested in this event. :)Creatively, SamanthaEDIT: Since creating the event, I have learned that many of you have received multiple invitations to it. I have no idea how this happened, and you have my sincerest apologies. It was truly unintentional, and please forgive me for any frustration that this has caused. I've reported the bug to the Google+ team, and really hope that this will not happen in the future. Events are cool, spam, on the other hand, is truly anti-cool. ):G+ First Friday Art Walk2012-10-05 12:00:00205

Daniel Mihai Popescu16,828This is a very special circle I recently created, with a complex range of members, therefore I shall call it The Complex CircleIt is still in testing form, so any activity from your part will be greatly appreciated. You may want to tag your friends, be free to do it; if they also comment here, they will be added to Friends of Friends, a circle i made with your suggestions (it didn't went very well at the time, the friends you tagged weren't really your friends, or worse, they wanted not to be in my circles), maybe three months ago.It is my suggestion to follow +Maximum Circle Sharing because this is the page which will share any circle with you in it and all the friendly circles having me as a member :)Please add it, share it and re-share it. Do it with responsibility, it's for your own good. Don't forget #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle  !2013-10-01 16:33:06456673578

Shawn Manaher1,382Core Circle Grows - Circles In CirclesStill amazed, still shocked, still growing!  In the last 7 days Core Circle has gone from 0 to 250 active members and continues to gain momentum with multiple mentions, shares and ripples across Google Plus.  This seriously has the makings of something that is ready to explode! Now, you might be asking, what's next and where do we go from here?!? Great questions! As you now know Core Circle is about creating segmented circles of interest within a circle so that you have the opportunity to REALLY get to know those in the circle.  You become and stay active in Core Circle through simple engagement (+1, Sharing & Comments) and living out the 'Give Before You Get' mantra. But, what happens when things start to get big, what about keeping it manageable? Today, I want to introduce you to the next part of Core Circle. Circles In Circles.Circles In Circles creates the strongest way you can connect with other members in a meaningful way.  It simplifies the "oh my goodness there as so many members!!!" into a bite sized, "Wow, this is easy to get to know each other!" It also allows room for growth for the larger Core Circle as more Circles In Circles are formed. Now what does this mean for you?  Below you will see a list of individuals in 5 separate groups named Pandas, Penguins, Turtles, Squirrels and Whales. If you are part of Core Circle Panda, then I would ask that you follow, share and comment on your group's content first, before you go onto the next Circles In Circles group.  I know you are all highly active on google plus, so it might not take you long to go through one group, so feel free to engage on several!Naming Your Circles In CirclesI know that 'Core Circle Panda' is a seriously boring name, so when you see your circle name, please comment below what you might want to name it.  Talk about it within your group to come up with something fun, interesting and exciting.Wow, this post is getting long, almost done!Core Circle Member RequestAs a Core Circle Member all I ask is that you:+1 this postFollow other Core Circle members IN your Circles In Circles groupShare this Core Circle with your friends, family, and neighbors.INVITE new members to join your Circles In Circles group. Non-Core Circle Member RequestWhile you are not YET a member, you can become one by:+1 this postFollow Core Circle membersShare this Core Circle with your friends, family, and neighbors.ASK to join a Circles In Circles group.Core Circle Active Member ListThe Pandas (see comment below for list)The Penguins (see comment below for list)The Squirrels (see comment below for list)The Turtles (see comment below for list)The Whales (see comment below for list)Wrap UpI know this has been an epic post, but I hope that I conveyed well the message of Core Circle and Circles In Circles.  Remember, it's about giving back folks and it's not as hard as it seems! Thanks to all you for making this a great experience for everyone involved!!!Go Core Circle & welcome Circles In Circles groups! #corecircle   #circlesincircles ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Once you are done here, take a look at the previous posts that Core Circle made, which will give you more detail into 2013-08-26 11:29:443771354995

This is also known as, no one is reading my content, people never talk to me and when was the last time I got a +1 for that awesome #caturday pic I shared!!! Waaah!  Crying aside, I think we can all relate, but Core Circle is not about that!As members of Core Circle, you get this, you know it's important, now it's time to act and so this is what I am asking of you.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Core Circle MembersToday, I am asking you to do 13 simple things today for 5 other #corecircle members. I promise you this won't take much time, it will enrich your day as you get to share and engage with some pretty awesome people in Core Circle.1. Please follow 5 members in Core Circle adding them to your own "Core Circle" group. (if you already follow the Core Circle members ignore this step)2. Please +1 at least 1 post on each Core Circle member you added.3. Please share at least 1 post from 1 of the new Core Circle members you added, publicly.4. Please comment below and list the names of the 5 people you followed and engaged with.5. Please have fun! Non-Core Circle MembersIf you are here today and found this post or someone shared it with you, you can join the party, but you won't be added to the main Core Circle until next week.Core Circle Member ListThis is the list of actively engaged Core Circle Members that over the last several days has engaged in some form or fashion with me and the entire Core Circle.  Please remember that these are real people, looking for connections and great content that is worth sharing and engaging with. Some have shared their pages and sites, which I am passing on to you.  Their views and what they express on these pages and sites are their own and not representative of this circle or google plus. Luis Roca5,477I've adjusted the Art + Design Distilled Circle with some significant changes, removing a few pages that posted redundant content and a few sharers who — um, we'll simply say it turns out they have an overly broad definition of art when it comes to the nude female. — Several fantastic artists and writers on the visual arts have been added. It's Art + Design Distilled on Google+.#TGIF everyoneLuis #sharedcircles   #circlesharefriday   #art   #design   #graphicdesign   #painting   #ns  2013-08-16 14:06:4453316
Luis Roca5,101Art + Design Distilled on Google+ has been slightly modified. There are one or two additions but will always stay around this size as some profiles may drop off in activity and with that, I'll move them out of the circle while I continue looking for new ones to add. This way when I share it every few weeks, it will always be a circle that consistently provides good work and discussions.Enjoy and Happy Friday everyone.Luis#circleshare   #sharedcircles   #art   #design   #graphicdesign  2013-08-02 14:25:2858115
Luis Roca4,937Art + Design Distilled on Google+ is a dense slice of some of the best artists, curators and active commenters of the visual arts.On Wednesday I posted a small circle I have enjoyed for a long while and asked for help to make it better. A few people came up with great suggestion and circles. Those suggestions led me to thousands of profiles I was reviewing up until early this morning to create this circle.I kept it smaller than most other circle shares but incredibly varied with a focus on quality streams and discussions. There are familiar faces and pages that have been circled by over a million people alongside artists that have been hooped less than five hundred times. This process ended up being far more rewarding than I could have imagined. I never created a circle like this to share and really regret not doing it sooner. I have met so many great creative people and added them to my circles. To all of you who recently circled me: Hello :)Enjoy the great visuals in your streams and Happy Friday everyone.Luis #sharedcircles     #sharedcircle     #art   #design  2013-07-19 13:22:1253233

Samantha Villenave510,146My 112 of 2012 (Who's in Yours?)Face it, if we're here, on G+, we probably spend a little way too much time on the Internet. I'll be the first to admit that being my case. These are the people whom I have interacted with the most, and have interacted the most with me for the past year. It's a mixed bag of a circle, but I can honestly say that I am very blessed to follow, and know a bit, each and every one of them.In this circle you'll find artists (painters, drawers, sculptors, illustrators and photographers), art lovers, designers, writers, geeks/developers, gamers, hangouters, googlers, and then some.  If you received a notification, then yeah, that means you're in it. And I just want to say Happy New Year to each of you. And thanks for the good times. I'm glad to know all of you, and I'm glad that I can even call some of you friends. If you aren't in it, don't worry about that too much. It isn't me, it's google's circle relevancy algorithm that picked these people, according to the time we've spent emailing, chatting, +1ing, commenting, and hangouting. You may want to check your own circles to see who your most relevant people are!Oh, and why not hashtag it  #my112of2012  if you do decide to share your own? It could be fun. :) #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  2013-01-01 19:13:0711248563

Samantha Villenave415,621I call this circle "Artcest".These people are my tribe, my love, the delight of my stream. This circle contains the 99 (plus moi) non-photog artists that I interact the most with, according to Google's algorithm. If you aren't in here, it isn't that I don't adore you, it's just that these peeps and I've got history, interaction, and mutual drooling and conversing over paintings and the like.I can guarantee you that each is a delight to follow. Some are NSFW, c'mon, but you don't care about that, because you know what you want to see in your stream here, it's innovation, beauty, paintings, sculpture, illustration, and mad creative experimentation. Each of these friends share primarily posts concerning art, whether their own and others. Certain among them are, IMHO, at the core of the art community here on G+. They're its central nervous system. They bring the internal into the external, here, on our not so tiny corner of the Interwebz. To be consumed, without moderation. #art   #circleshare  2012-10-15 06:55:32100592651
Maude McDonald15,490I am trying to do some "circle management" today.  If you are a painter, work with a pigment, and if you have added me but I have left you out of this circle, please let me know.I also have an "Artist" circle for non pigment artists (charcoal, pen/ink, sculpture or 3D art, etc).  I will share that soon.  Again, if you have circled me and I have not added you, please let me know on that posting.2012-09-30 21:23:31430336
Abigail Markov12,495Meet The G+ Artists #MeetTheGPlusArtists  This circle, plus a few, was compiled from the #MeetTheGPlusArtists  event yesterday - the favorite artists of Artists and dedicated art lovers alike. I went ahead and compiled this small circle for the sake of ease; for those who want active, working artists who share their work here on G+ but are less inclined to go through the entire tag stream and add them individually. In addition to the 39 artists suggested, I have included three community pages that are central to the quickly-growing traditional arts community here on G+ for those of you who want to continue to find the best of art on G+, the emerging artists, and who want a deeper look into what goes into the art shared here: +G+ with Brushes , +Friday Art Critique and +Art+Talk.+G+ with Brushes  is the champion of the Traditional Artists here on G+, managed by +Terrill Welch and +Lena Levin as the starting point for anyone new to G+ who wants to find some of the best art on G+. These two artists scour the active arts community searching for the best of traditional art here. Whether you want more gorgeous art in your stream, or you are an artist and wish to know more, circle +G+ with Brushes and let them know you have. They are always looking for more artists, and more amazing art.For those of you who are artists, who love art, who want to learn more about art, or who want to see the thought and work that goes into a piece of art, +Friday Art Critique belongs in your circles. A long-running weekly event here on G+, +Friday Art Critique is the brain child of +Max Rubenacker and ss where artists of all walks (from traditional to photographic to digital) submit work for critique and evaluation to their peers, and to the supporting fine arts community. Many of the heavy hitters of our arts community got their start here - it is the emerging artist gallery of G+. P E Sharpe28,871The Backbone Of My G+ HangOut CommunityIt's the anniversary month for Hang Outs On Air, so what better way to celebrate what hangouts have meant to me than to share a circle of the folks I deem hangout-worthy? ;^)These are the people who make MY hangouts happen, whether they are Googlealiens who have supported the hang out environment or the everyday G+ folks with whom I have had regular, ongoing conversations over the past year. The circle comprises people who kicked everything up a notch for me on G+, and who are largely responsible for building the community that surrounds me. They are, for the most part, the people who have shared circles that included me, who have given me a shoulder to lean on when the going gets tough, who have shown me different ways of thinking, who have given of themselves so freely and allowed me to be part of their worlds too. Thanks to you all for making my G+ feel like home. +Shared Circles on G+ +CircleCount +The Best Circles on Google+ +Public Circles 2012-09-20 19:12:5210155236

Sorry! :)At nearly 1000, my art circle is bursting at the seams. It's too big to share on it's own anymore, so I thought I'd break it down into several smaller circles, to share over a period of days. These people fill my streams with visual imagery, sometimes beautiful, experimental, evocative... each one has a unique perspective and practice. Most of these people are painters, drawers, illustrators, sculptors, etc. (I generally keep my photogs in a separate circle, with a few exceptions, for good measure. So yes, this circle is a different beast.)The desire to connect with other artists is what brought me to G+, and it is a huge part of why I am still here.**************************************************************************A note about this circle, and my sharing it.Every time I share a circle, I get a backlash of anger from people that are not in it. Honestly, it is to the point that I rarely share circles. Please know that this circle is not all of the artists that you should be following here on Google+, it is simply the artists that I follow. I have chosen them for personal reasons, and enjoy following each of them. I am sharing them because I believe that you may also enjoy following them. This circle reflects my choices, of whom to follow, please be respectful of that. If you are an artist, and not in my circles, please feel free to say hi and let me know in the comments, so that I can mosey on over to your profile and see your work! #art #creativity #sharedcircles  2012-08-20 15:36:157925116

Meilani MacDonald2,935Small Business circle 2 of 2Hello small business peeps! I'm a small biz person and naturally I want to connect with other small biz owners. I really feel we all have so much to share with each other and to learn from one another as we navigate this world called Google+ that provides us with so many great tools and resources to support our small biz efforts. I also think it's a good thing to support each other, and lift each other up as we work towards our goals. So I've been collecting small biz people and shared small biz & entrepreneurs circles, because those are the people I most want in my own circles, to follow, to connect with, and to support. I have 700+ small bizzes in my circle, so I've split it into two circles to share with you. This is #2 of the 2. Let's hear it for small business!Btw, speaking of supporting small bizzes, I host a TGIF Biz Networking Hangout every Friday at 4pm pst, now a Hangout on Air. It is a chance to give yourself and your biz a little promo, and I feature special guests who are small biz owners and who have all kinds of good advice and info to share with other small biz owners. Please check my profile for more info or to watch last Friday's episode, where we talked about QR codes and great ideas for how to use them, and also talked about the value of keeping content fresh on your blogs and web sites, and when and why to blog, or not to blog. #smallbusiness #entrepreneur #sharedcircles +CircleCount +Shared Circles Shared a Circle with You +Shared a Circle with you2012-05-28 18:24:39330211318
Rob Gordon22,157*Entrepreneurs, Self-Employed & Small Business OwnersUPDATED SHARED CIRCLE: Part 1 of 2: A through L (by last name).Link to Part (M-Z):         http://goo.gl/0Fcg1Link to Supplemental 1: http://goo.gl/AXXrWLink to Supplemental 2: http://goo.gl/TZKKeLike to Supplemental 3: http://goo.gl/3x6hINOTE:  This circle is no longer maintained in its present form but is still a good place to start if you are looking for entrepreneurs to follow and connect with here.  It has mostly been replace with a Google+ community of the same name that you can find at http://goo.gl/ejG9P**********************This is the most recent update to the popular "entrepreneurs" circle that posted a few months ago. As you can see, it has gotten bigger than 500 people so I have had to split it alphabetically into two parts. These two circles includes the self employed, small business owners, independent contractors, small startup companies and pretty much anyone trying to make it outside of the traditional economy. This is different from the other business circles of this type in that it doesn't include too many of the "celebrity entrepreneurs" and instead has mostly people with their own business or venture. There are more than 800 people here, but this has been reviewed extensively since it was last published -lots of fantastic new people have been added, and some have been dropped - mostly because they don't interact much. The end result is a circle of really awesome business people who actively interact with others here and have a small business or entreprenueral mindset. This is a really diverse group and includes entrepreneurs of all stripes - some have well established ventures and are wildly successful, others are just getting started and haven't made it yet. As can be expected, it is a little tech heavy, but represents most industries and many different types of business. There are even a handful of people here who have traditional jobs, but seem to have an interest in small business issues and always seem welcome to help entrepreneurial efforts. The people in these circles post all manner of things - not just business, but all are smart and interesting people so I recommend that you check this out.I do want to add the disclaimer that this is in no way "definitive" - there are millions of entrepreneurs on Google+ and this is just a tiny fraction of them - the ones I have curated. It seems that about two seconds after I publish this I always remember someone I should have included so just me know if you think you should be here. I republish this periodically and generally add everyone who comments on the post.As with all circles of this size I would use some discretion in adding this - either update your existing circle, pick and choose the ones you like or use these as a trial circles - whatever works for you. I'm not even sure Google will let you add all this many names at once so you may have to come back if you want to add all of them. The technology for this is not perfect, but I am trying to do my part to help build a highly interconnected community of entrepreneurs here on Google+.I hope you find the people in this circle interesting.RobReshares welcome and appreciatedIMPORTANT: You don't want to follow people based on where their last name fits in the alphabit do you? Make sure you also take a look at the second part of this list:LINK TO PART II (M-Z): http://goo.gl/0Fcg1#smallbusiness2012-04-18 18:49:234401197169
P E Sharpe19,435You Turn Me OnThis is my happy little constantly evolving circle of sapiosexual delights. Formerly a circle in which I shared folks who like smart folks, it's now a circle comprising people who post things that excite and arouse me for one reason or another. I've previously explained the root source for the prefix sapio ; here it is again, but from wikipedia this time. The word sapience is derived from the Latin sapientia, meaning "wisdom".[23] Related to this word is the Latin verb sapere, meaning "to taste, to be wise, to know"; the present participle of sapere forms part of Homo sapiens, the Latin binomial nomenclature created by Carolus Linnaeus to describe the human species. Linnaeus had originally given humans the species name of diurnus, meaning man of the day... he later decided that the dominating feature of humans was wisdom, hence application of the name sapiens. His chosen biological name was intended to emphasize man's uniqueness and separation from the rest of the animal kingdom..+Shared Circles on G+ +Sapiosexual +Public Circles +The Best Circles on Google+2012-03-28 22:10:47122341323

The balance of the Ello story

But when relationships are melting down, and we’re losing money hand over fist, and the company is about to go out of business in four weeks for lack of funds — this is when over and over, I find the resources within myself to do something really creative. These are the times when miracles happen.

What a fascinating glimpse into what it is to build a new social network. How clever of Paul Budnitz to bring us into the story, the struggle, right off the bat. There is another side to the story. +Søren Siim Nielsen pointed me to an article by Aral Balkan, creator of the Indie Manifesto: https://aralbalkan.com/notes/ello-goodbye/.

It's eye-opening. An exit strategy is revealed as a trade in slaves to social media: their online presence and the tracks they leave. In other words, exit is the trafficking of internet identities and ourdigi... more »

I've read a lot of articles in the last few days about Ello, including in Mashable, The Wire, PC Mag, and so on, but this one by +Renata Sherwin is one of the best. Definitively convinced me not to join up.

In other words, exit is the trafficking of internet identities and our digital data, which is largely about consumption. How much will you give me for a hundred million people? How inflammatory, not to mention informative.

The way I see it: Ello needs funding or it can't stay afloat, couldn't have launched in first place. Budnitz writes some pretty passionate stuff and he's 'just like you', available, responsive, in the unique and ground-breaking tradition of +Vic Gundotra.

It remains to be seen what Ello does with our data. Like Google, they undertake to delete it if you close your account. Perhaps it will be something like Google's approach: in exchange for data on your spending habits (which includes where you spend time and where you invest socially) you get smart suggestions and special offers. We give you directions, learn your regular routes, tell you about cheaper flights etc. Coming soon to your wrist, your TV, your car, your fridge, your light bulb.

It all depends on how benignly you see the process working and whether – and this is the crucial part – permission has been given, explicitly. Consent. Yes means yes.

Consent with Opt-out

Perhaps that is the best we can wish for in terms of privacy: transparent collection and usage of our data, with opt-outs. A while ago someone from a prominent tech company said to me: We'll keep saying no human being looks at your data, algorithms do until people get it. To which I replied: I haven't heard that once. You need me to help you with that messaging!

You need to explain it. It's not the user's fault or responsibility. The onus is on the company but, as Facebook has demonstrated over the years, it's more fun to 'get away with it' (and have a crack legal team to show you how). I know my IQ and there are benefits to not being 24 anymore, chief of which is agency, boundaries. In this case, it's knowing the difference between 'nothing to hide' and 'permission granted'. By the way, I think 24 is the median age of the average person able to adopt Ello, without being overwhelmed by fatigue and cynicism. : )

It's pure genius to tap into hipster culture and take it seriously. Hipsters grow up. They go hungry and wait in line for bendy phones. Along with the emerging markets' need for lower end cell phones, maybe hipsters are the next big lucrative target market. Think about it: yoga, local, fair-trade are huge industries.

On Ello, brands can engage but will not be given priority (or so goes the promise) and cannot buy it. No irritating spam communications. No one can do it that way anymore anyway, so a new wave of smart, progressive funders wouldn't want that model. It's a highly sophisticated business strategy to embrace what social media has finalized: the customer really is king, even if he's 'only' a hipster. After all, who's setting the trends for a significant segment?

It's a distillation of the only way to sell successfully in future. I'm going across the border to get a book from Amazon today and already it feels nostalgic. Things will be coming to us: by suggestions, through one-click free trials and delivered by drones. But they had better be well-behaved guests. Manners maketh brands.

So yeah, I think they had to take the funding – precisely what Balkan objects to in his blog post above – but I also agree: by the time we see how it all works out, it will be too late. Does the majority care anymore? I don't think so. That doesn't work for me (not caring, surrender), nor do I necessarily want to opt out altogether. Vigilance and forcing accountability: that's the middle ground to literally take. (As a matter of fact, I think I've just hit on my life strategy!) Not sitting there. Moving. The market has spoken.

Google and Apple have decided it's wise business strategy to build totally encrypted phones. In other words: not even they can get at your communications or data (except where you've permitted it on an app). There is increasingly sophisticated software being written to enforce that too. You have to be invited in, be friendly, say hello.

Tractor Beam

As for Ello, I don't have the time or energy to do it justice. I am making a quality decision not to do that now (famous last words?!). It certainly has some appeal, including that it feels simple, natural. That's how G+ felt to me, still does.

Like the builders of G+, Ello has analyzed Facebook and tried to improve on it. In fact, they aim to destroy it. Wow, the hatred is strong for Facebook. Pungently so. Then again, you never know, Zuck and Budnitz may be laughing it up in some bar right now, perhaps about this: http://sf.curbed.com/archives/2014/09/26 mark_zuckerbergs_insane_reno_caught_on_google_street_view.php. The thought pleases me.

Zuck may have been this young and hungry (not sure of Budnitz's age, though he seems to be an early 30s kind of guy who understands people ten years younger. Yeah, you're right, probably early 40s! Must Google... By the way, maturity in the mix is a very good thing). But Zuck was never this open – raw, in fact, ostensibly respectful of users, or driven by aesthetics.

The photos look amazing, as +Thomas Hawk has noted. (+Vivienne Gucwa also had valuable thoughts in an interview you can find on her page.) +Dave Besbris, come and show them how it's done! In fact, all of you come and browse in incognito mode, if you aren't there already: +Yonatan Zunger, +Bradley Horowitz. ; )

You'll see how vastly superior your product is compared to, as I've said, a typewriter with photo-posting functionality. But that, almost frustratingly, is most social network UIs. We all know the upgrades and add-ons available here are the best there is. : ) The social slant is pure Twitter, with @ mentions, but somehow more personal. It's hard to put my finger on why, as I've said, especially with such a shallow test dive.

It may be down to the unbridled passion and heart and soul-bearing of Budnitz in particular. I'll be quoting him again in a third and final post because I find his words rather inspiring. Oh no, the tractor beam... Well, as long as it's an honest, equal relationship... I mean, pretty is pretty, eh Vancouver? : )
