Hey, folks. I posted about this a while back, but could I get a really huge favor?

I am typically the Queen of Fail at popularity contests, but somehow, two of my books made Readfree.ly's final vote for Top 50 Self-Publishied Books Worth Reading in 2016 list.

I'm really proud of the hard work and effort I put in as a self-publish. (And I'll be the first to admit there's still so much to do to make my books better.)

But, it'd kinda be seriously awesome if I could make a top anything list. Like seriously awesome.

To help, I need the following:

Vote.

Please +1 & Share--spread it around one of your friends is in the running. <3

Thanks so very much!!

The details on how to vote are on my blog; readfree.ly's links can get pooched on facebook, but I'll post the direct links, too.... more »

One of my two novels made the Top 50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading in 2016 list! <3 Super stoked. Thanks for voting, everyone!

The rest of the results aren't out yet, so it'll be a few days until I find out if my other book made the list, too!

I posted about this already, although it was through my blog rather than directly to google+. So, here's the deal.

I decided to give kindle scout a test drive with my new book, Water Viper. To do this, I need your help.

If the book is selected by the kindle scout folks for publication with kindle press, everyone who voted/nominated this book will get a free copy.

Unlike other publishers, which pick books very rarely, the kindle scout folks pick up a few books every month, so it's entirely possible Water Viper could get selected.

To make that happen, though, I need as many people clicking and nominating as possible. All you need to do is click the link and click the 'nominate' button. You'll need to be logged in with your amazon account.

There's a sample of the book on the kindle scout site for you to read and enjoy if you'd like.

Once you're done, I'd really appreciate a share of this post.

Once the kindle scout process is completed, I'll review it on my blog for other writers who are interested in submitting, how it works, and what's generally involved in participation.

Now, for a little about the story...

Water Viper is an urban / paranormal fantasy following Starfall, an astrological event. Yep. I smacked a meteor into Canada. The meteor flooded the world with magic and decided it really had something against fire. So, combustion and fire? Not so reliable in this post-Starfall Earth.

I enjoy assassin turns hero stories, I will not lie. Same with mercenary turns hero stories. So, I decided to write on. My mercenary has a side job as an assassin, and she's as ethical as they get.

If she's left her mark on you, it's because you deserve it and are the scum of the Earth.

Until she meets Nate... and then her mark takes on a whole new meaning, and dumps her right in the middle of a problem that could ruin everything she's worked so hard to build for herself.

Thanks so much. +1s, shares, and nominations are really, really appreciated.

(P.S.: More NaNoWriMo blog posts will be coming this week for those of you waiting for the next in this year's batch.)

I'm going to be beginning my yearly prepping for NaNoWriMo series of blog posts soon. I will end up posting them twice; once public, and once to one of my collections.

I don't know if I will plan daily writing challenges for November, but if I do, I will be posting to my public profile.

If you have requests for subjects you want me to cover for preparation to write a novel in a marathon, speak up now!

I am considering releasing my next novel, Water Viper (new world, new series, new characters, etc, etc) on all marketplaces.

I'm also considering attempting Kindle Scout.

In short, I'm open to ideas and thoughts on the subject. Please vote! Thanks.

Shameless Book Plug (mine): Free Book: Winter Wolf, Witch & Wolf #2. (Can be read as a standalone.) (Free between Sept 13-15, 2016)

FAKE REVIEW: (Because I wrote the book.)

I have a serious love/hate relationship with this novel. This book drove me up every wall, left me dangling from the ceiling, and otherwise made me question my sanity. I had a devil of a time writing this book.

I recently read through the entire thing again on a proofing run, and I was a little startled to discover there is a decent little book lurking under all the bad memories associated with the hell period of my life when I wrote it. (Things like my basement flooding with sewage, friends having a really bad time, etc, etc.) But I survived, and the book is... better than I feel it should be.

Which is an odd thing for me to say.

The most interesting thing about writing this book was juggling reality versus confabulation--a syndrome the main character suffers from. Confabulation is a great word, isn't it?! It is a medical syndrome where those who suffer from amnesia, dementia, or forms of memory loss build memories for themselves to allow them to cope with what they lost. In many cases, the fabricated memories make a great deal of sense... even though they aren't true. The victims don't even realize they're doing it. (Which separates them from compulsive liars and other syndromes; this is a subconscious fabrication.)

So, there's a lot of things in this book the character believes... that isn't the truth. Which made it even harder to write.

It allowed me, however, to do some really neat things with the book--and screw around with perceptions, especially Nicolina's.

Yeah, I can be a real jerk to my characters sometimes.___

The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews

This review is for both Clean Sweep & Sweep in Peace.

This was my second introduction to Ilona Andrews. In all honesty, I didn't really enjoy the Edge series book I read; if I had jumped in on Clean Sweep or Magic Bites to start with, I would have become a hardcore Ilona Andrews fan long ago. (I'm so hardcore fan I hired a book store to take a complete set of the Kate Daniels books to a convention to get them signed for me.)

What I really loved about this series is the intersection of worlds and the relationship the main character has with those around her. She's an innkeeper on a mission, but she's struggling; Inns are living beings, and hers is in dire need of a boost.

Sweep in Peace (book 2) is definitely my favorite of the books, but I really enjoyed the first one, too. It's funny, it's different, and it has such an unusual take on the nature of inns, innkeepers, and fantasy slamming into science fiction. This book blends genres beautifully, firmly science fiction and firmly fantasy... and good at both.

That's rare, and yet the books are light enough to be enjoyable by a far broader audience than science fiction often allows.

Really recommended. Go in with a sense of humor and an interest in the unusual.___

Fake Review: Karma by RJ Blain (Yeah, that's me. Thus, fake review. Shameless plug with added bonus of some humor.)

Okay, so this isn't really a review... but rather my thoughts about this book. This one released May 16, 2016. I'm really fond of it--in some ways, it's one of my favorite books I've written. I've always been a fan of Tom Clancy, and some of my very first books I read included mystery novels, something my grandmother really enjoyed. My mother wasn't keen on a lot of books, so I first gained access to books at my grandmother's house and the school library. (Then I figured out public libraries existed, and my mother rued and lamented my discovery. Nearest one of any use was 30ish minutes away, and it kinda sucked, and my favorite one was like 40 minutes away, but walking distance from Church. She learned she could get me to go to Church with a promise... more »

She learned she could get me to go to Church with a promise to stop at the library.)

Anyway, this book blends the Witch & Wolf world with the mundane life of a FBI agent who is joining CARD. (Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team.) She discovers the supernatural world later in the book, and things get... interesting.

I like trying to come up with how law enforcement, especially on the upper end, would work if supernaturals existed and were in hiding.

Karma cracks me up, and I have so much fun writing her, especially as she breaks apart and has to struggle with a lot of problems, problems that unhinge her and knock her off her rocker.

This book also is responsible for me starting two new UF worlds, both completely outside of the W&W scope... and those two books are definitely among my favorites. One of them releases in the next couple of months.

But I will always hold a special place in my heart for Karma and Jake... and look forward to starting the second installation of their wild and crazy adventures. (Which will be soon.)

Fun Fact: I recently dropped the price of Karma from $3.99 to $2.99, and I found a few tiny errors I've corrected (uploaded at time of posting so who knows when they'll be on amazon live.) I periodically re-read my own books and update Amazon with those errors removed. I don't like errors in my books, and try to fix them whenever I spot them.___

This is a sci-fantasy 18+ story. Yes, it's erotica dressed-up in shifter science-fantasy fiction. I don't mind erotica. I also won't deny reading it. I found this one as a free read trolling amazon for books, as I have exhausted my book budget for the rest of the year.

Sooo, everything with the shifter keyword that was free ended up on my kindle in a mass book-buying binge--one without any guilt. So sue me!

This erotica actually had a plot line, and while it did fall back on some standard fantasy erotica cliches, it was interesting enough to mostly make up for the inclusion of those cliches.

Ah, my kingdom for a shifter fantasy novel that doesn't involve "Shifter sees/smells/touches mate, recognizes their soul mate, must have mate, they live HEA" tropes...

I'm totally all for shifter sees hot, sexy person and has a full case of lust... but the soul mate on sight thing does get old. I am much more of a fan of 'Boy meets girl who wants to kick his ass and he's totally turned on by it" trope.

What? I like badass women and the men they smack down as much as the next girl.

Anyway, Abby isn't exactly badass, though she does earn her badass creds a bit later in the story. I mostly liked the characters, and it had a plotline.

So, if erotica is up your alley, you might enjoy this one.

Book Review: Faerie Blood by Emma L. Adams (4* Read.)

I've been on an Urban Fantasy kick lately, and I came across this book random shopping on Amazon. I liked the cover, tried the sample, and was curious enough I bought the first book. I haven't purchased the second title in the series yet, but it's on my to-buy list when I have money to buy books again. (Or someone gifts me a copy or amazon money falls out of the sky or something like that.)

There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book, but I think the stand-out reason I enjoyed it so much is Vance. Vance intrigued me. He's such an interesting mix of obnoxious high powered man and nice guy. He is written in such a way he's easy to huff over but also like at the same time.

I have a weak spot for that sort of male lead.

There were a few things that kept me from totally loving this book, although they were personal preference types of things rather than anything actually wrong with the book. Plot was entertaining, the characters were intriguing and varied, and it was a nice escape from reality.___

Review: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet (Kingmaker Chronicles #1.)

This is a first-person present tense novel. I typically hate books of this type, but this is absolutely one of my favorite books. I read it in one sitting, resulting in me staying up to 5 AM because I couldn't put it down. I loved everything about it, from the main character, her unlikely love interest, her confused innocence, and the absolute whacky mish-mash of legend and lore, blending our world's mythology with this fantasy world. The magic is interesting, the writing is engaging, and the characters really make this story shine.

There's a bit more sex than I usually like in my straight up fantasy, but the build up for it is just wonderful.

This series may end up on my instant buy list.___

Author beware... I have a fairly low tolerance for the following issues in fiction:

1: Bad formatting. (I need indents or really good spacing between paragraphs. I prefer decent indents. 1-2 characters isn't a decent indent. If I can't easily see the paragraphs, I get migraines.)

2: Horrible punctuation / spelling. (It happens in books. I generally ignore mistakes unless I find one every couple of pages. Then I get pissy. I count myself happy if I only find 10ish problems in a book.)

3: I don't like rape scenario stories. If your story has a woman who is only strong because she was raped, I'll just pass in advance. It's a trope type I find meh at best. (This is not saying a character can't have been raped, but... if it's the primary focus, I'm probably not going to like it.)

Generally, I'm pretty open... but I'm not a fan of zombie stories or excessive gore. You can send it, but I probably won't enjoy it unless yours adds something very new to it--or has some really badass awesome medical science disease vectors where the disease is the main start and it's fun.

I also don't like POV character deaths or the death of primary love interests.

Beyond that, go to town. I'll also read mysteries, spy thrillers, and comedy. And yes, I DO read romance. I don't mind erotica.___

Mini Book Review: Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

I have a love/hate relationship with the Jane Yellowrock series. This series is on my preorder as soon as preorders are open list. However, it took me several tries to get into the series. I found the first book initially off-putting, but ended up hooked in the second book, and proceeded to devour the rest of the series in a cringe-worthy binge.

Jane is one of the more unique UF heroines, and she doesn't have it easy, which makes it so enjoyable. The series gets better as it goes, too.

Part of the reason I have a bit of a hate relationship is due to one of the side characters, who is also a romantic interest. Absolutely hate him. So, that romantic interest arc drives me looney toons.

I'm also one of those stereotypical readers who enjoys one main love interest in a series. This is not the case with Jane... more »

Part of the reason I have a bit of a hate relationship is due to one of the side characters, who is also a romantic interest. Absolutely hate him. So, that romantic interest arc drives me looney toons.

I'm also one of those stereotypical readers who enjoys one main love interest in a series. This is not the case with Jane Yellowrock, although I do actually enjoy the interplay between Jane and two other of the men her Big Cat finds so interesting.

I just hate the third one and want to stab him in the face with a rusty spoon.

Anyway, once I got through book one, I got hooked and became a squealing fan girl in book two. This series is different, which is part of what makes it so much fun to read.

Includes an interesting take on vampires, Cherokee legend and lore, and a very edgy take on shapeshifters, which is quite fun. Generally, a good read.

Side note: I have a mega crush on Bruiser.___

Mini Book Review: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #1)

The Kate Daniels series is quickly becoming one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. Ilona Andrews is a wife and husband team, and the Kate Daniels stories focus on a wide selection of character, although the main axe being grounded is the interactions of the People (vampires) and the Pack (shifters) and the rather human (but not quite vanilla human) Kate Daniels.

In Magic Bites, Kate's guardian is murdered, and she takes it on herself to find out who has caused his death--and why. But there's something even more sinister than her guardian's death at play, throwing her into the middle of a bad situation that just gets worse as it goes.

My favorite line from this book: "Here, Kitty, Kitty..."

Starting this week, I'm going to try to post a new book to my SF&F book collection with mini reviews or why I want to read it.

Need to get back into doing that. Heh.

So many books I've read recently, and I've been too lazy to post the reviews on them.

After a slew of delays, Tales of the Winter Wolf, Vol. Six has finally arrived! My apologies to those who were expecting it sooner. Life happened.

Unlike the other volumes of the Tales of the Winter Wolf set, this takes place after Winter Wolf.

Nicole Thomas, once Nicolina Desmond, managed to save her sister and family from the plague killing the Fenerec. However, there’s one life she’s touched most of all—Richard Murphy’s.

This is his story.

A common question I've had about Winter Wolf involves why I ended the book where I did. This story (written in three parts) is the reason why. I've always though the next part of their story, as a couple, belonged to Richard. While there is a section written from Nicolina's perspective, everything is centric to Richard, who he has become, who he was, and a glimpse of who he will become.

People have also commented about Richard's personality in Blood Diamond, particularly how he has certain edges. While Blood Diamond happens quite some time after the events of Winter Wolf, the consequences of his relationship with Nicolina and the events surrounding Winter Wolf have a long arm.

For those of you who wanted to find out more about what happened to Nicolina and Richard, this volume will answer some of your questions. It may make you ask more questions, but that's okay.
Their story isn't done, not yet. There will be a lot more of this pair in the future.

Tales of the Winter Wolf, Vol. Six is now available on Amazon for $0.99. It is also available in the KU library.___

Instead of a safe haven, all Sara finds is betrayal. Hunted by creatures she once believed were stories meant to frighten children, she is given a choice: become one of them, or die. Forced to share her skin with a voracious carnivore and driven by instincts and desires too strong to resist, Sara must adapt to the changes in her life or be destroyed by them. Finding a mate is her wolf’s top priority.

If she doesn’t want to become another prostitute in a city full of them, Sara must learn to control the beast within. With a hungry wolf to feed and an empty bank account, selling herself to the highest bidder may be the only way she has to prevent becoming a monster driven to eat anything—or anyone—unfortunate enough to cross her path.

I'm hoping to have Beneath a Blood Moon finalized on Tuesday, but it depends on if there are any errors with the print proof.

Here's both of the books together!

I think I solved the problem with my blog posting to my profile! I really dislike when a site 'helpfully' changes a setting. No, if I wanted the setting changed, I'd change it myself...

I was reading a review recently on goodreads, and I was intrigued by its content. The reviewer was hoping for a whole new world in the new series. (Sorry, Balancing the Scales is in the Witch & Wolf world. It does introduce a new species of supernatural in the same way Pack Justice did, but it is still in the same comfortable alternate Earth the rest of the books take place in.) It made me think. To date, I’ve created three independent worlds. Technically, four, but one crosses over with one world… I’ll explain below. Since I’m going to go to the effort of writing out all the books I’ve written (and am planning to write in the near future), I’m going to put the books in chronological order for you.

I’m friends with a lot of really amazing authors. Some of them are bestsellers, some of them are just plain popular without having made the bestseller list, and some of them are like me, somewhere near the middle of the pack. Many of us share one thing in common: we’re plagued by book thieves.

Oh, that's nice. Google+ seems to have deactivated public sharing of posts to my timeline. Good job, Google+. So, there are a bunch of blog posts y'all didn't get to see. I'll reshare them from my blog and make sure the damned things are public this time. Sorry about that.

I survived my birthday! I may not survive next week, but if I'm going to die, doing so behind the wheel of a Ferrari Italia 458 seems like the way to go. (My husband loves me. He sends-me-to-a-racetrack-in-a-supercar loves me.)

In other news, Shadowed Flame and Karma both successfully launched on Monday! Woohoo! If you're interested in the books, check them out below:

Matia Evans has it all, except for one thing: she can’t see color. With an adopted family who loves her, a company she helps her father run, and more prospects than she knows what to do with, she’s in no place to complain that her world is limited to shades of gray, black, and white.

Her inability to perceive color isn't the only strange thing about her: all souls have shadows, and she can see them. Unfortunately, there are humans who are worse than monsters. Worse, there are real monsters in the world, and they view humans as prey or as mates.

If Matia doesn’t want to become a victim, a pawn, or a trophy bride of the supernatural, she must use every bit of her strength and cunning. Her freedom and survival depend on embracing the darkest parts of her soul, but if she does, she risks becoming the newest—and most dangerous—monster of all.

Karma, Balancing the Scales #1
Available now at Amazon for $3.99. ( http://amzn.to/25b949c )

Karma Johnson has spent her entire adult life working to become a member of FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team. She's earned her transfer to CARD, but when she's caught up in the kidnapping of an infant from a festival, she learns what it's like to be the victim. Pretending she's a teen keeps her alive while trying to get herself and the baby to safety.

But the kidnapping only scratches at the surface of a far more nefarious scheme, one that will test Karma's skills, her patience, her sanity, and her beliefs.___
