Landscape Photography Show13,719*Landscape Photography Show #46: Power Points* In the last two events, we explored the horizontal and vertical rule of thirds lines and how they divide your frame into 9 equal parts.  It's always great to set a horizon on the lower or upper horizontal line.  It's also good to place a strong element along one of the vertical rule of thirds lines. This event will focus on where the two vertical and horizontal rule of thirds lines intersect.  We call those Power Points.  There are 4 of them: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Placing a strong element at one of the Power Points can really improve the composition, drama, and power of your photograph.  Examples:  the single red leaf on a green tree; the eye of anything wildlife, and the setting sun on the horizon.    Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Power Points are what we want practice with this event.  Show us something special place at one of the intersection points of those vertical and horizontal lines.   1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays something special at one of the Power Points.       2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us which Power Point you used: upper left, upper right, lower left, or lower right.  Explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Power Point rules, tell us why.  Also give us some information about the location and any challenges that you faced.  We want to know the details about your photograph. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    General Rules: 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 13, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) CuratLPS Event #46: Power Points2015-07-06 17:00:00344

Landscape Photography Show13,719*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00409

Landscape Photography Show13,719*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00569
Landscape Photography Show13,719*Landscape Photography Show #43: The "S" Curve* Curving lines are a fundamental aspect of landscape photography.  They will move the viewer's eye throughout the photograph.  When used in conjunction with light along the curve, the composition is even stronger. Juli zwei Veranstaltungen in Herrenberg statt. August an.

Ideen? Weitere Vorschläge für lohnende Locations?Photowalk Stuttgart2013-01-12 11:00:0032
Gorka Ortiz68,139I'd like to invite you all to this brand new Photography Contest. The rules are simple, you are kindly suggested to upload up to 3 pictures of your own. The pictures must show yourself in a reflection. No matter whether your reflection is shown through a mirror, a window, some water on the road or any surface that can reflect yourself. There is no need to be recognized in your picture, you can reflect any part of your body. Try to find funny surfaces or elements where you can be reflected and just have fun taking part! ;-) Who will be the winners? Ok, trying to be fair no matter how many followers, plusses or shares you have and also taking into account your kind suggestions,  I have decided to invite 2 or 3 photographers from my circles who I think they produce quality pictures to help me judge the best works. The contest will end the 4th of November this year 2012. I will create a circle of winners with the 10 best photographers in this contest and I will share it in my stream. (Sorry, I know is not much but is better than nothing I guess and there's nothing else I can offer! ;-)  ). Of course I am opened to any suggestion from you all to make the contest as fair as possible. ;-) Finally, the most important thing... have fun and enjoy taking your pictures and sharing them with us! ;-) Cheers!Photography Contest - My Reflection - By Gorka Ortiz.2012-10-04 19:00:00130
Steve Johnson33,282... At least for this event. The idea here is a simple one; Rules serve a useful purpose but they should be questioned, broken and ignored on occasion. Post photographs that break at least one photography rule (maximum of 3 photograhs) and note which rule they break in the comments.  Here are some example rules that can be laid waste to: Composition The horizon a third from top or bottom Left/right mirror symmetry is to be avoided The odd number rule Rule of thirds Technical Use of on camera or undiffused flash Wideangle for portraits (fortunately this one is becoming a thing of the past) Editing Oversharpening Over-saturating (Just about over-anything really).  Other Shooting down at kids, pets or flowers. These are just a few examples off the top of my head -there are many, many more. If you can think of others please add them in the comments. One useful rule: This is all for fun so don't over think it :)Rules are for Fools2012-09-24 07:00:0033
