Mobile Isn't Killing Desktop. It's Killing Free Time.

The latest stats from Mary Meeker's Internet Trends deck (http://www.kpcb.com/internet-trends) show that desktop isn't fading much at all (in fact, there's more desktop use today than 6 years ago). But mobile is skyrocketing.

I'll probably have a few more slides to share from this deck, as her stuff is always superb.

Superb post

Loved this find from +AJ Kohn. I think the article accurately synthesizes one of the chief challenges of the modern world - the idea that an opinion based in ignorance rather than facts and data is equally worthy of respect.

No, It's Not Your Opinion. You're Just Wrong

In other words, you can form an opinion in a bubble, and for the first couple of decades of our lives we all do. However, eventually you are going to venture out into the world and find that what you thought was an informed opinion was actually just a tiny thought based on little data and your feelings. Many, many, many of your opinions will turn out to be uninformed or just flat out wrong. No, the fact that you believed it doesn’t make it any more valid or worthwhile, and nobody owes your viewpoint any respect simply because it is yours.

You can be wrong or ignorant. It will happen. Reality does not care about your feelings. Education does not exist to persecute you. The misinformed are not an ethnic minority being oppressed.

My opinion is that this post is awesome. #reason  ___Superb post

Very Impressed with SimilarWeb Pro

This is a screenshot from our account with them, looking at keywords that sent search traffic to Moz.com. Their methodology is pretty solid - they have a panel of millions of web users around the world and can capture (anonymously) the keywords they search for, websites they visit, etc. based on clickstream data. Thus, they saw thousands of web surfers search for these in Google, then visit Moz, and it becomes the source for the data.

It's like keyword (not provided) is gone and real KW data is back (at least, a sizable sample set of it).

Excellent idea - glad to see this out in the wild

Free Crowdsourced Tool Brings Google Disavow Link Data to Light

How do you know if you have backlinks that others have disavowed? Wouldn’t you like to know if another site has disavowed your pages?

Launched today at #SMX Advanced, DisavowFiles started as a wish list tool project at Bruce Clay, Inc. because, in a world of link penalties, why wouldn't you want more disavow link data? SEOs and site owners can help each other have better intelligence on backlink disavowals with this new crowdsourced tool.

This Interactive Graph Might Be the Future of Content

Hard to find a better example of 10X Content than this: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/05/28/upshot/you-draw-it-how-family-income-affects-childrens-college-chances.html

Great content isn't just about a powerful story or great data -- it's about how it makes consumers of that content feel. The greater the connection a content publisher can deliver, the more that work will resonate and be remembered. I think this idea - to ask readers to draw the graph themselves, then compare their guess against reality, is incredible.

I suspect that because of this interactivity, the issue and the real data will stay with me far longer than if I'd merely read the article and seen the visual. Bravo +The New York Times.

I Went Paleo and Now I Hate Everything

Please put aside whatever religious sentiments you have about the Paleo Diet, and read this because it is simply the funniest thing I've read in months.

Recently, I went pseudo Paleo.

I say pseudo, because, like most things in my life, I’ve jumped in headfirst without putting any thought or research into it (this is also how I ended up taking a workout class called “Insanity.” Afterwards, I was drooling and delirious. So I guess it delivered).

It just happens to be by Geraldine, the wife of +Rand Fishkin, and I don't even know why I mentioned that because she'd be just as good a writer if she were actually sleeping with "the guy from the farmers market" instead of Rand (read the piece!).

That's the topic of this week's new Whiteboard Friday: http://bit.ly/IsBrandARankingFactor

Alongside the primary question, I talk about what elements of brand/branding may have direct and indirect influences in the rankings and why.

Superb bit of creative, interactive content here: http://ww2.kqed.org/lowdown/2013/11/12/traffic-waves/ I not only learned a lot, but instantly wanted to make something like it to show patterns of how sites earn links & social shares :-)

Questions Used at Moz for our Weekly 1:1s

I love how creative some Mozzers (like engineering manager, Kelsey) are getting with their weekly 1:1s. We use software called +7Geese, which enables customization of the 1:1 templates. Here's some questions Kelsey's used in the recent past to help make 1:1s a more TAGFEE experience:

Thanks for the New "Search Console" Rebranding, but Google, what I really want is data I can remotely believe

Below is a comparison of visits from Google Search to Moz.com (in Google Analytics) vs. search clicks from Google (in Google's new Search Console - formerly Webmaster Tools). As you can see, Search Console shows nothing close to reality in either trend or numbers.

I'm not sure why Google chooses to display information that we can easily prove wrong... It's hard to earn trust for their products this way.

ON EDIT: +Cyrus Shepard noted that the dip in accuracy corresponds to our move to HTTPS. We looked at the HTTPS version of Moz's Search Console (aka Webmaster Tools) account, and if you add the data from both accounts up, you get closer to +Pedro Dias's estimate of ~20% off (it's actually a bit more, but not as bad as this... more »

Inside Google's Secret War Against Ad Fraud

http://adage.com/article/digital/inside-google-s-secret-war-ad-fraud/298652/

Fascinating article describing (for the first time) some of the tactics Google uses to discover botnets, click fraud, etc. If you read on (it's long, but worth it), you'll also learn about a tool Google calls "Powerdrill" that lets teams do incredibly intensive computations in seconds (I'm a little jealous - we could really use one of those for Mozscape).

The Chokehold of Calendars

Sometimes, a few paragraphs summarize things you've been thinking about but couldn't put into words. https://medium.com/@monteiro/the-chokehold-of-calendars-f70bb9221b36 did just that for me.

Absolutely superb read on a too-often-ignored topic:

We Don't Sell Saddles Here

They could just sell saddles, and if so, they’d probably be selling on the basis of things like the quality of the leather they use or the fancy adornments their saddles include; they could be selling on the range of styles and sizes available, or on durability, or on price.

Or, they could sell horseback riding. Being successful at selling horseback riding means they grow the market for their product while giving the perfect context for talking about their saddles.

A great piece here that everyone who touches product or marketing should read at least once.

I really appreciated the quality, depth, and uniqueness of the questions in this interview: https://www.groovehq.com/blog/rand-fishkin-moz-interview and they put together a really nice post based on it.

I've done a lot of interviews, but +GrooveHQ went above and beyond.

Another Mystery in the SERPs - The New Zealand Bookstore

This query and set of search results surprised me quite a bit, particularly since I'm performing the search from a US IP address, and a small, regional bookshop in New Zealand is outranking everyone: https://www.google.com/search?q=hard+to+find+books

Any guesses as to why they're ranking so well in the US results?

Great research on how Google crawls JS from +Adam Audette and co.

Here's the TL;DR of what we found by testing Googlebot and JavaScript:

1. Google can execute and then follow many, many different types of js links.

2. Google can execute and follow several types of js redirects, and the result is similar to how a 301 updates the index and preserves rank.

3. Google can read the DOM and then index dynamically inserted content.

4. Google can read meta data inserted in the DOM, such as rel canonical tags, robots noindex tags, and meta descriptions. We even inserted structured data dynamically and it resulted in rich snippets in Google's SERP.

These tests were designed and executed by the +Merkle SEO technical team led by +Jody O'Donnell and +Max Prin ___Great research on how Google crawls JS from +Adam Audette and co.

My friend and former Mozzer, +Miranda Rensch, was in Nepal for the recent earthquakes. She's raising money to help folks here: https://life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/nepal-earthquake-relief-and-rebuild

If you have the means to donate, it would mean a lot to her, and to many others in Nepal, too. BTW - if you have corporate donation matching (we have 150% match at Moz), be sure to make the donation direct to Care.org as they've got the nonprofit status for matching.
