A Look at Moz's Search Traffic 2013-2015 and the Migration to HTTPS

Google recommends moving to HTTPS, but as you can see from our experience (and as we've seen from many others), that migration is similar to the traffic loss during a domain move. We lost ~11% of search traffic for ~3months, and are only now recovering. Long term, we hope this is a win for our SEO and for security, but if you're recommending a migration, be sure to tell your team/boss/client to expect a short-term loss.

What Happened After Moz Migrated to a Mobile-Friendly Blog?

On April 20th, with just a day to spare, Moz migrated to a mobile-friendly layout. Within a week, the vast majority of our pages received Google's "mobile-friendly" label. But, our mobile traffic never took off and, weirdly, was actually higher (both as a percent and total) BEFORE we moved to a mobile-friendly design!

UPDATE: just wrote a more in-depth blog post about this http://bit.ly/MobileFriendlyImpact

See the graph from GA below for more details:

Happy to Announce the Release of Search Engine Ranking Factors 2015 by +Moz
https://moz.com/blog/ranking-factors-2015

I'm excited to announce the results of Moz's biannual Search Engine Ranking Correlation Study and Expert Survey, a.k.a. Ranking Factors.

This is the largest study of this kind we've ever undertaken, including our Expert Survey of over 150 professional search marketers, and a ranking correlation survey of over 17,000 keywords.

In addition to the classic signals we've studied in the past, this time we worked with 3 data partners including +SimilarWeb +Ahrefs and +DomainTools to study additional correlations.

The Expert Survey also includes valuable insight into Google's broad algorithm, negative ranking factors, and the future of search.

Take a look, let us know what you think!... more »

New Search Visibility Scores in Moz Analytics

I wasn't involved in this project at Moz, but found the implementation quite good. Basically, the Moz Analytics team used avg Click-Through-Rate curves to estimate the CTRs at each position, then created a metric that estimates the percentage of clicks your ranking positions are earning you across all the keywords you track.

Sometimes, it's frustrating not being CEO anymore and not being as involved in big decisions, products, launches, etc. but it's also very cool to see teams at Moz launching stuff on their own that I find valuable and worth sharing.

Superb post

Loved this find from +AJ Kohn. I think the article accurately synthesizes one of the chief challenges of the modern world - the idea that an opinion based in ignorance rather than facts and data is equally worthy of respect.

No, It's Not Your Opinion. You're Just Wrong

In other words, you can form an opinion in a bubble, and for the first couple of decades of our lives we all do. However, eventually you are going to venture out into the world and find that what you thought was an informed opinion was actually just a tiny thought based on little data and your feelings. Many, many, many of your opinions will turn out to be uninformed or just flat out wrong. No, the fact that you believed it doesn’t make it any more valid or worthwhile, and nobody owes your viewpoint any respect simply because it is yours.

You can be wrong or ignorant. It will happen. Reality does not care about your feelings. Education does not exist to persecute you. The misinformed are not an ethnic minority being oppressed.

My opinion is that this post is awesome. #reason  ___Superb post

Very Impressed with SimilarWeb Pro

This is a screenshot from our account with them, looking at keywords that sent search traffic to Moz.com. Their methodology is pretty solid - they have a panel of millions of web users around the world and can capture (anonymously) the keywords they search for, websites they visit, etc. based on clickstream data. Thus, they saw thousands of web surfers search for these in Google, then visit Moz, and it becomes the source for the data.

It's like keyword (not provided) is gone and real KW data is back (at least, a sizable sample set of it).

Well. Better Find a New Job I Guess, Cause this SEO Thing is Over

I cheekily checked out the new grouping features in Google Trends and grabbed this screenshot (marked up for clarity). Here's the post about their new stuff: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-new-window-into-our-world-with-real.html

If you're speaking at a tech or marketing event, I've got some hacks that have worked to help me over the years: http://bit.ly/CheatAtPresentations

Trying to be very transparent with this post and share all of the best stuff I've learned and applied successfully (and what I've failed at, too).

One of the Hardest Topics I've Tackled Publicly

This is a subject that gets under a lot of people's nerves, so I hope you'll read it with empathy and an open mind. I thought it was important to be transparent and share my/our views: http://bit.ly/IntentionalDiversity

My life is, occasionally, very weird...

"'Oh, god. What did I do?'

I didn’t answer. I just started laughing maniacally. Surprisingly, my cackling like a Bond villain did nothing to do calm him down."

Excellent idea - glad to see this out in the wild

Free Crowdsourced Tool Brings Google Disavow Link Data to Light

How do you know if you have backlinks that others have disavowed? Wouldn’t you like to know if another site has disavowed your pages?

Launched today at #SMX Advanced, DisavowFiles started as a wish list tool project at Bruce Clay, Inc. because, in a world of link penalties, why wouldn't you want more disavow link data? SEOs and site owners can help each other have better intelligence on backlink disavowals with this new crowdsourced tool.
