The upside of the I/O easter egg hunt is that I am now aware of a bunch of nice documentation for a lot of Google things and I sorta kinda want to make evil things with the cast API and android wear (not necessarily together).

The downside is that the expression "Aw snap!" will probably make me strangle people in the near future.

Droidcon Tunisia (+Droidcon.TN )

It was once again an honor and a privilege to open a Droidcon on behalf of +CyanogenMod , with an attendance that was even more enthusiastic than last time (and that's no small feat).

From an European's perspective, it's both enlightening and humbling to see how fast the middle-eastern countries are moving to catch up with tech in the post "Arab Spring" period, and the difficulties they're facing with things we take for granted (like actually monetizing their work, or even getting developer access to the Play Store). I had a great time with all of you there, both speakers and attendance, and I'm looking forward to see what comes out of Tunisia in the next few years.

You know where to find me, and I'm sure we'll meet again soon enough :)

Random MWC 2014 notes

- MWC is scaling back from the over-the-top crazy publicity stunts. That's actually a good thing, because they were really distracting from the actual content. It was a great week, and I got to spend time with old friends I hadn't seen in a while, and make some new ones. We really should meet more often. :-)

As far as the "new things" go in the smartphone arena, there wasn't anything that stood out as revolutionary, and that's a good thing. Maybe we're finally maturing out of the MORE! stage and "incremental upgrade" will stop being frowned upon as if it was an insult. The last 3 years of fast hardware specification increases made a device obsolete 5 minutes after it got unboxed, which is frustrating to a lot of people; nobody likes hearing "your device is too old for X" a month after it was... more »

- Nokia does Android... and it's probably the first time I see an Android firmware trying so hard not to look like one, these are not products for android fans or users. If you're updating an Asha phone, you'll feel right at home, but if you really want an Android, I strongly suggest you look somewhere else; these were purposefully designed to address the Asha/low-tier/featurephone segments, not to enter the Android space.

- Samsung finally puts out something running Tizen, and it's good. I honestly liked both smartwatches, as shipped; I'm still not sold on the current generation of wearables, but the new ones are miles ahead of the original Galaxy Gear.

- Samsung is also going for "gold on all the things". For that extra douchey mile, you can wear a golden Gear on your wrist, while you tap away at your golden note 3, with a golden cover, using a golden-tipped S-Pen. Seriously.

- Oh, and the S5 was actually nowhere to be seen. It's probably still adjusting the final feature set based on what went on there ;)

- HTC might have a winner with the new Desire 816. It's a mid-range model, but it looks good, and considering the specs it'll probably be cheap enough to sell in good quantities and become a popular device.

- LG apparently decided to see in how many shapes they could sell the G2: Bigger, smaller, squarer, curvier, but they all look like differently-shaped G2s.

- The Sony Z2 looks fantastic. It's kind of like the Z, except with updated specs and a display that won't make your eyes bleed if you're looking at it from an angle.

- Lots of interesting hardware from other players, too, but I'm more curious about what's happening on the software side. There were plenty of people betting on privacy, security, and encrypted approaches to communications, and I'd expect that trend to continue for a while.___

PSA: LG Optimus G Pro (GSM/LTE)

So... after asking around a bit, it looks like all the GSM variants of the G Pro carry the same hardware, except for modem firmware and antennas (which we never change, and neither should you :) ). This means the CM builds currently labeled as e986 should fully work on any e98x variant, without changes. The one possible exception is E985 (the China Mobile carrier variant).

So... in previous occasions where this happened, we labeled these multi-variant builds for the base model (the one ending in "0"), and we'll do the same again. Sometime soon the e986 builds will become e980.

Damn it, I had my money on Krispy Kreme... :-)

Just back from a whirlwind trip to Asia visiting our Android ecosystem partners in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Exciting to see all the high quality Android devices available now, including Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, LG G2, Sony Xperia and many more. Also looking forward to the new devices our partners are launching in Berlin at IFA, played around with them last week and really nice  -- stay tuned; we’ve got a lot more coming!

All this Android innovation is driving tremendous ecosystem momentum and I’m excited to share that together we’ve now passed 1 Billion Android device activations. Huge thanks to the entire Android community from the hardware manufacturers, chip makers and carriers to the developers and content creators to all of you - our Android users around the world - for making this possible.

On my return from Asia, I was also thrilled to find this guy waiting to greet me on the front lawn -- love the new #AndroidKitKat statue and can’t wait to release the next version of the platform that is as sweet as the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites:)___Damn it, I had my money on Krispy Kreme... :-)

So the news is that the US military/NSA has backdoors everywhere.

I still haven't seen anyone mention how ridiculously unprofessional the supposed NSA slides look; it looks like a kid's idea of a flashy presentation for school (garish colors, logos splattered everywhere). There's no graphic structure, elements are misaligned, etc.  That, alone, stretches the credibility of the whole thing to me, without even getting into the claims themselves.

Also... A program like this only cost 20M? srsly?

PSA: Skinless Android isn't synonym with Google's Android.

This +CNET article had the following paragraph:

" While there are some fans of Sense, there are many other Android fans who prefer a "pure" version of the phone with stock Android, which enables faster updates and the latest from Google. " (emphasis mine)

Allow me to remind you that there have been skinless Android devices in the market before (countless whitelabel/carrier-branded OEMs in Europe, HTC with the G2, LG with the G2x), and historically the lack of the typical OEM customizations has had no impact in update times. If anything, it made them worse (since the device had to be treated uniquely and apart from the rest in the OEMs' upgrade cycles).

As everybody knows, Android 5.0 was recently renamed Krispy Kreme, since the +CyanogenMod  people had such a large contribution and an overwhelming love for donuts. We're disappointed we couldn't replace Bugdroid with Cid, but at least we get to fully support the laprohig (aka "the X") by the time it launches at IO.

We had to fully ignore the Galaxy S4 to concentrate on it, but it was totally worth it. Andoid KK will blow your minds.

If this turns out to be right, I'll be very happy.

+CyanogenMod 7 was one of our best (if not the better) series in terms of reliability and scope. A lot of that was due to the skipping of honeycomb, and the extra 6 months we got to fine tune the codebase. Getting the same opening with jellybean would be a welcome breathing space.

LG Optimus 4X HD

One more newcomer to +CyanogenMod !

The 4X uses the same bootloader unlock procedure as the L9 (possible on stock version v20a and newer): type adb reboot oem-unlock , and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

While you're in fastboot mode (and after unlock), flash a CM-compatible recovery image. +ClockworkMod recoveries are, as usual, tested and recommended, and available from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager (or the ROM Manager app, which should now recognize the model)

What use is a smartphone if it can't be used as a food plate, with complimentary reusable chopsticks? (And makes a water sound when the sashimi touches it)

This used to be one of my regular #ingress portals when there were few of them, but it had been a while since I visited.

Today, it presented an opportunity for a field that covered over half of Lisbon and 320k mind units. Fun times: -)

So... Following the Google Now and Glass tradition, shall we expect people shouting "WATCH! WHAT TIME IS IT?" instead of looking at it?

RC's prediction: The development version will have HTC's current crap pseudo-unlock, and the carrier-subsidized the versions will be clamped down.

If the +HTC One has a real S-OFF (ie, you can flash boot from recovery), I'll maintain +CyanogenMod on it.

Don't disappoint me, HTC. I really want to like this phone.___RC's prediction: The development version will have HTC's current crap pseudo-unlock, and the carrier-subsidized the versions will be clamped down.

Dear +Android Central . Very few people have the authority to speak for CM as a whole, and none of them were asked about this. Individuals' opinions are not, and can not, be portrayed as the project's.

Kthxbye

Unlocking the LG Optimus L9

The L9's (p760) update to Jellybean from LG started rolling out today. It has a ton of new stuff for people who are interested in keeping the stock ROM, and another new thing that's of interest to us: the bootloader is now unlockable.

How?

Step 1 - After installing the JB update (I don't know if there are any leaks, but it so avoid them. The real update is out), make sure you have a SIM in your phone and let it stay on for at least 30 continuous minutes. This is important!. If you skip this step, you may end up with a permanently locked device.
Step 2 - Enable USB debugging in the developer options, and run " adb reboot oem-unlock " from your PC
Step 3 - You'll land at a confirmation screen like the one in the first photo of this post. Read it, and follow the instructions there.
Step 4 - If... more »

Step 4 - If your device unlocked, you'll be in fastboot mode. The phone will helpfully tell you about it (Second photo). Congratulations, your bootloader is unlocked and your L9 can run unsigned boot images
Step 5 (optional) - While you're at it, stay in fastboot mode and flash CWM from http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.9-p760.img  with " fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.9-p760.img "___

OK, getting an IO ticket is taking at least twice as long as it did last year :|
Can we at least get a random spinner graphic next year? I feel like I'm staring at a laundry cycle
