Each week, a community member (or two!) will speak on their area of expertise, and give you some tips to improve your business in that specific area. Of course, we’ll take all the questions from the audience that we have time for during the show, and do our best to respond to those we can’t answer on-air afterwards. Not only will you get some helpful tips, but you’ll have the opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs who may be struggling with the same issues that you are! This week’s topic is *“Setting Your Business up for Financial Success”.* We’ll be covering some of the essential tools you need to manage your finances, including financial projections and financial reporting (and NO, they aren’t the same thing!). If you have any questions, please leave them on the event page! This week’s hosts are: @100507762856957104832 Judi is the founder of GrowthCast. She helps small businesses see their financial future. Judi and GrowthCast are on a mission to demystify business financials and allow any business owner to understand the health of their business. @104267556228949747305 Stephanie gives owners a new way to measure the value of their business, using a method called Finance-Ability. She wants owners to understand the value of their company before they get involved in any financial decisions, so they are dealing from a position of strength. Knowing your worth is always a good thing - in life and in business! We look forward to seeing you for the first of many community hangouts! #PoolingOurKnowledge #EntrepreneursCommunityHOA||POOLING OUR KNOWLEDGE - Entrepreneurs' Community Hangout||2014-05-12 22:00:00||33|

What is your experience with investors? I have a theory about investors - I think exposing early stage startup ventures to them can be highly destructive - almost always a huge waste of time, and often leading them down the wrong path entirely.
My opinion might be biased - I have had terrible luck with investors and it almost always ends up badly. I never solicit investors but believe it or not I do get contacted by them on occasion - maybe once or twice a year. This is likely because I do my best to organize small business online and sometimes post my ideas and ventures publicly.
It almost always ends up being a disaster, and these "investors" seem to be skilled at making me jump through hoops even when they make the initial contact. In an moment of honesty, one even told me he stopped contacting startups and giving "advice" when he realized he was... more »

Any unfinished side projects to give away?. I swiped this question from Hacker News because I thought it would be interesting to see if people in this community had any thoughts. Here is the exact way they asked it there:
Would anyone like to give away / sell the projects which they've started but have no time or interest to finish?
Sometimes as an entrepreneur you spend a ton of time on projects that never quite happen, and you can reach a point where you don't even care about the money - you would just like to see it happen.
Other times you might just have a fanciful idea you know you will never actually work on. I mentioned a game idea on a post by a Google employee here recently and several people liked it. Knowing that I have neither the time nor skills to build this, I "open sourced" the idea and said to anyone who wanted to... more »

Did you want images and links in comments?
Settle a debate for me please.
On a recent post by a Google employee promoting the new interface and features, I mentioned that I had never once heard anyone say that links and images in comments was the most important thing they wanted in Google+ - and that is the truth - I haven't.
Then one of the "Google Preferred Contributors" swooped in to issue a rebuttal as they always do if there is a Google employee anywhere in the vicinity and said he had heard this request "thousands of times". The Google employee who made the post then backed him up and said he also thought it was the thing users here wanted most.
I know I may be an "outlier" in the way I use social media, but I didn't think I was that far off. Was this really an important feature you wanted before it was... more »

LinkedIn / Profinder Platform. Just curious, has anyone in this community tried this yet - or do you plan to? Do you think it will help your business - or hurt it? What do you think this means for the industry as a whole?

Linkedin has launched a new competitor to Upwork - one of those quasi-monopolies like Uber but for freelance workers - a merger of the old oDesk and eLance platforms. To tell you the truth, I am not all that excited about this competition - it seems like more of a "race to the bottom" and an attempt to commoditize what we do. I am also not big on the idea of Linkedin / Microsoft "screening" me by their corporate standards. Most of the promotion on the so far has been to corporations who may buy this service, but this is the first article that describes it from the other side.

It's probably a decent app, but jeez dudes - what ever happened to "more wood behind fewer arrows"? It is not hard to envision a really killer app with Hangouts that gives us everything we need instead of fragmenting everything. As has been said about Google. "they build product to solve their own problems, not ours".
Somewhere I have a half written blog post with the title "Google Communities is Broken: Here's how to fix them"". I recommended that Google bring Hangouts back to Google Communities - but integrate. them properly this time, because together they would be perfect for "community building". Google will never do that though - they just move on to the next shiny object, and eventually let their other products gradually fail.
That means fail for us of course - no one at Google ever actually fails, at least from... more »

Not the kind of thing I would normally share here, but my "business casual" wardrobe has become a bit too casual - even by California standards. I never have any idea what to do about dress shoes - the ones I have now are 20 year old torture devices. These actually look pretty good.

Does anyone have any discussion questions?. Lots of people like to give "advice" here - and in fact on most business forums. My Twitter feed in particular is filled with "advice" and come to think of it so is my Linkedin feed. I guess giving advice is supposed to make everyone think you are smart - and if it is really good advice, I suppose that is true, but I do wonder sometimes if we have reached "peak advice".
Because this community - and all public communities on Google+ are also plagued with "link dumping" we set up a new category here for discussion questions with no links. Everyone here thinks they have to include a link with every post, but we actually LOVE posts with no links. We give those priority on pinning at the top of the community, but lately there haven't been any. I or the moderators - could keep coming up with them,... more »

OK - I am definitely getting posts in my screem from people I don't follow, and it seems to be happening repeatedly. These posts are public - not shared privately , and there are no indications that they have been recommended or given a +1 by someone I know.
I first noticed these when I started getting some really racist posts in my stream and needed to check if I had somehow accidentally followed these people - I hadn't. I don't know how often this happens but I tend to notice them more when I see posts with politics very different than my own. As an example I get posts from R Michael Brown who I don't follow. His posts are not extreme, but it's a point of view that doesn't interest me and I don't want it in my stream.
Is Google doing one of those things like Facebook did or they force you to see political views you don't want to see? My stream is... more »
