Polar bear babies in Alaska- A few years ago I was lucky to be able to visit an Inuit village where bears have their young. Getting there involved driving up the Dalton highway and then flying in from Prudhoe bay to Inupiat village (weather permitting). Bear cubs can be curious however regulations require you to move if they get too close to avoid them learning to much about humans. Common sense indicates moving away anyway from their protective mothers.

Matriarchs - One of the greatest pleasures of my travels to Tanzania is getting time to focus on animal and bird behaviour. These three mothers, part of a herd of around 15 animals, are presenting the face of their collective care for their young. If you look closely you will see the vague outline of a baby who in an almost choreographed dance has moved back and under as the three matriarchs move together and forward. (touch our kid we break your face). This was a general first caution response we saw in a number of groups. If they were even more concerned another big mother would come forward with trunk raised and ears out. Watch the cars hit reverse fast when that happens. One learns to give them plenty of space. The collective maternal concern is very moving.

Maiko Syoko, from Gion Kobu, in day makeup from my book. I am delighted that my book Geiko & Maiko of Kyoto is now available from 'all good bookshops' in Australia, as it is being distributed through Penguin/Random House.
So that those outside Australia do not feel neglected, I have special reduced shipping for purchases from my website www.robertvankoesveld.com for September.

(The spelling of her name I have used is her own preferred spelling, however it is also often written as "Shouko")

The Jidai Matsuri happens in Kyoto every year on October 22. It's a must if you want to see a parade of 2000 historical characters in splendid costumes. Not all the characters are confident enough to be 'in role' but some work to really channel their inner samurai. The maiko are always perfect in their historical costumes of course. Treat this as an early heads up if you will be in town on that date and maybe have someone buy seats in the special seats for a front row show. The route is long, as is the parade itself, so there are lots of other places you can catch it. Remember sunscreen! It is colourful so I will post some colour images another time

An image from my book: Geiko & Maiko of Kyoto is from the Odori section and I really encourage all visitors to Kyoto with an interest in this world to check if there are Odori performances happening at any of the five theatres, one in each kagai. I schedule my visits around them where possible.
My book is just now being distributed in Australia through Penguin/Random House so can be ordered from '*all good bookshops*' in Australia or via the the Fremantle Press site. https://www.fremantlepress.com.au/products/geiko-and-maiko-of-kyoto?taxon_id=18
It is also available in Kyoto.
International orders are available through my site robertvankoesveld.com

A delightful day in Gion Higashi earlier this year as Tomitae 'turned her collar' to become Geiko. In this image she amazingly stopped briefly by my exhibition and looks at her own image made over three years ago. She is wearing her own wig for the first time and can sleep without the wooden pillow she would have used most nights for more than four years (to protect her hairstyle). . #Geiko #erikae #maiko #kyoto the exhibition in Kyoto is closed now but my book is available on my website: www.robertvankoesveld.com

On the (bonnie, bonnie) banks of Loch Ness today. 1/3 Three images and three thoughts ...

* I realise I am most drawn to smaller landscapes right now; what I think of as 'poetic' or 'intimate' landscapes; rather than more usual larger scale ones.
* Image making comes in strange bursts. I can spend days making few images that I really care about and then have a timeless immersive hour or so where there seems to be images everywhere.
* I have come to trust the Leica SL in the rain. I just kept working in the heavy rain and let the camera deal with it today after having had no issues in other rainy conditions in the past. So good not to have to baby the camera or stop working when it pours. (I don't usually discuss gear and don't want to go more into the topic - just saying good water seals are good to have)

Loftenen Norway - It's been raining and sometimes sleeting since I have been here. Un-seasonal according to some but a classic 'green winter' to others ( ie two seasons: White winter and green winter). Clearer just now. It is very beautiful here. I am staying here in the little red cabin on the right in this image. Really!

San trance dances are intense affairs. Richard Katz, an associate professor from Harvard University says they have these four times a month, on average In .her book The Harmless People based on fieldwork in the 1950s, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas observed that the women sat in a circle around a fire, singing the medicine songs in several parts with falsetto voices and clapping their hands in a sharp, staccato rhythm. Men danced single-file around the fire taking very short, pounding steps in counterpoint to the rhythms of the singing and the clapping. The movement was accompanied by the sharp, high clatter of rattles—made from dry cocoons strung together with sinew cords—that were tied to their legs. The dance was a complicated pattern of voices and rhythms that was infinitely varied and precise. San people began learning these songs and dances when they were children and worked hard to develop these skills.. ‪#‎san‬ ‪#‎bushmen‬ ‪#‎namibia‬ ‪#‎healing‬ ‪#‎trance‬ ‪#‎robertvankoesveldphotography‬___

The moss garden of Saihoji. I was able to sneak away from my exhibition for a few hours yesterday to visit this wonderful garden. You need to apply to visit the garden and then when you arrive spend quite some time tracing the characters of a sutra. It does put you in a good frame of mind. It also means there is less of a crowd than some places. Definitely a place to return to in Kyoto.

Anotherimage of Tomitae photographed yesterday wearing the special sakko style hair worn in the week or two before making her Erikae, or transition from Maiko to Geiko. The crane ornament is also worn at this time. She is dancing a truly wonderful and moving piece only done at this time and accompanied by Tsunekazu. Today she danced in my exhibition space once again with Tsunekazu.
The exhibition continues for 7 more days.

Toshimana by the window - one of the works in my exhibition "Seeing Geiko" which opens on Thursday in Kyoto. (Details below)
Toshimana herself will be performing in the gallery space in one of two very special events.
In this image she stands calmly, showing the special quality of Geiko (and some senior maiko) in which their years of practice of dance and other arts, eventually becomes fully embodied. Each stance or movement is 'just so' – considered, elegant and balanced. I often feel this skill for embodied grace is their strongest art though dance is equally strong.
