Lotus Carroll1,778,004This is the Event for our September 2013 Self Portrait Challenge: A Great Cell Phone Photo. Just because you use a cell phone doesn't mean your self portrait has to be of the "facebook style" mobile or reflection variety. That little guy has a camera inside it, so treat it like one! Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait using only a cell phone to capture and process (no computer software post processing!). Your photo must have been captured this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST September 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tutorial & Tips* Need some tips and inspiration for this challenge? Have no fear! That's why we're here. :) The amazing @110573952887886961621 made a tutorial about shooting cell phone photos to get you inspired - see it here: http://goo.gl/z3IZ23 He also posted a video of his process - see it here: http://goo.gl/vzcRHL *Remember these Do's and Don'ts to get the best photo:* *DO take the time to set up your shot thoughtfully. *DO invest time and effort and try more than once to get it right. *DO make sure your lens is clean. *DO take your photo in adequate light so it's not grainy, blurry, or dark. *DO put the cell phone down and use a timer - stop taking all your photos by holding the phone and pointing at yourself or a mirror. *DO try different angles for the best composition. *DO read the posts in our Tutorials Category and try the concepts and ideas you learn from them: http://goo.gl/uSUULE  *DO try different apps and see what works best for you. *DO be aware of your background! It makes a huge difference! Is there junk in the room behind you? If yes, it's not a good place to shoot. ETC. *DO NOT just slap a filter or cheesy effect on and call it a day - take the time to try different edits and pay attention to the elements of your photo.  *DO NOT point your phone at a mirror and take a reflection photo where we can see your phone. *DO NOT have your arms in the photo as you're holding the phone out in front of or above you. *DO NOT duckface. *DO NOT showcase your cleavage as the main subject. *Here's a list of Photo Apps you can try out:* Snapseed VSCOcam Retouch (cloning tool!) How do you park when you go to a volcano? Why they have you back in for a quick get-a-way. Notice all the vehicles backed into the parking spots near the edge volcano. Portland Head Lighthouse
Cape Elizabeth, Maine

There was interest in having a lighthouse at Portland Head as early as 1787 when the Massachusetts Legislature provided $750 to begin construction of a lighthouse. In 1790 the U.S. Government took over for all lighthouses and $1500 was provided to complete construction at Portland Head. This first lighthouse went online in January 1791 with 16 whale oil lamps as the light source.

By 1864 a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed along with new cast iron stairs.

By 1865, 20 feet was added to the tower and it was equipped with a Second-order Fresnel lens which was used until 1958.

The current Keeper’s Quarters was built in 1891 and was home to the head and assistant keeper’s and their families until 1989.

Hunting Island Lighthouse
Hunting Island, South Carolina

The lighthouse is one of two lighthouses in the United States that are of the "segmented cast-iron" lighthouse design. The segement cast-iron construction is credited to Major General George H. Elliot. Florida's Cape Canaveral Light is the other light of this design.

The tower is 136 feet tall and was equipped with a 2nd Order Fresnel Lens. The top one-third of the tower is painted black and the bottom two-thirds is white. When the lighthouse was operational, it could be seen from 17 miles at sea. Today, a rotating light mimics the original light, but is for show only and not suitable for navigation.

Construction began in 1859 but it was destroyed during the Civil War in 1862. Due to it's design, it was able to be rebuilt after the war and was complete in 1875. By 1888, erosion... more »

Boca Grande Lighthouse
Gasparilla Island, Florida

Built in 1890, the lighthouse consists of a one-story dwelling, supported by pilings, with a square tower protruding through the center of its hipped roof. Atop the tower is mounted an octagonal lantern room that originally protected a rare third-and-a-half-order Fresnel lens, which produced a white light interrupted every twenty seconds by a red flash at a focal plane of forty-four feet.

The Gasparilla Island Light was deactivated in 1966 and soon fell in disrepair. On February 28, 1980, the lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration work began in 1985, and in 1986 the light was recommissioned.

Sapelo Island Lighthouse
Sapelo Island, Georgia

In 1998 the old original brick tower that was built in 1820 was restored to the way it is today. Today the restored tower is again used as a navigation aid with it's distinctive red and white stripe daymark and an electric beacon. The red and white bands were added to the tower in 1850, and fourth order Fresnel lens was installed on the original tower in 1854. The brick tower had been inactive since 1905 when it was replaced by a steel skeleton tower with a third order Fresnel Lens that operated until 1933.

Key West Lighthouse
Key West, Florida

Built in 1848, this 50 foot tower that sits on a 14 foot hill, replaced an earlier lighthouse that was destroyed in a hurricane that hit the island in October, 1846. When the lighthouse was put into service, it had a woman Head Keeper, which was unheard of at that time. Mrs. Barbara Mabrity had been assistant keeper to her husband of the previous lighthouse. She took over as Head Keeper when her husband died from yellow fever in 1832. The tower was fitted with its third-order Fresnel lens in 1858.

Sunset at St. Simmons Lighthouse
St. Simmons Island, Georgia

Built in 1872, this structure replaced the original lighthouse which was destroyed by retreating Confederate solders during the American Civil War. The current tower is 104 feet and was equipped with a third-order biconvex Fresnel lens. In 1934 the kerosene burning lamp was replaced by a 1000 watt electrical lamp.

It is said that the lighthouse is haunted by the ghost of lightkeeper Fredrick Osborne. Osborne was killed in a duel with the assistant lightkeeper John Stephens.

Inside First-Order Fresnel Lens
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Florida

The French physicist and enginer Augustin-Jean Fresnel is credited with the development of the multi-part lens used for Lighthouses. His first lenses were first used in a lighthouse in 1832 when one was installed in the Cordouan Lighthouse at the mouth of the Gironde estuary in France.

The design is not only an engineering masterpiece, but true art work.

A first-order Fresnel lens like this one is about 12 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter.
