Reality Check For The Tech Sector
With the rise of the internet, and companies’ ability to become not just transnational but supranational, active everywhere yet arguing that their responsibilities belong nowhere, attitudes have changed. Apple’s row with the FBI over access to a locked iPhone that belonged to the employer of one of the San Bernardino killers is just the latest example of technology businesses discovering that nothing they now do is without consequences.

Del The Funky Homosapien - Mistadobalina
Mista Dobalina is a serpent, don't you agree?
The little two-tima resembles Aunt Jemima
With jeans and a dirty white hoodie
Seems like he wouldn't be a snake or would he?
Disguises come in all sizes and shapes
Notice the facade of the snakes
They all catch the vapes, even though last year they was GQ
Took a lot of time before the D-E-L could see through
The mask, all I had to do was ask Hemperor and Kwamé
And my man responded they would bomb a
Fraudulent foe with the strength of Hercules

Today's UK Sinkhole Is In London
Woodland Terrace in Charlton in the south east of the city has been closed after the road's surface gave way overnight. The crack opened up a huge crater estimated to be at least 30ft in length and 10ft wide. It burst open beneath a car that appears to be a blue Vauxhall Zafira, which was then plunged into the cavernous pit. All that can be seen of the vehicle this morning is its front end, with its rear wheels at least six feet below the surface of the road.

The Autonomous Car Never Ending Promise
We’ve been promised autonomous cars for what seems like forever—and Popular Science archives have proof. In 1961, they predicted that cars would be directed by a punched tape so you could sleep behind the wheel. And in 1967, they anticipated you could twirl a dial on a car’s dashboard, set it to your destination, and then sit back to read the morning paper on the way to work.

Scrap Hinkley Point Nuclear Project
Renewable power has made new nuclear unnecessary in the UK. Data produced by the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) shows that in 2014 hydropower contributed 1.7 GW to the grid. Also six bio-electricity technologies, all capable of continuous power operation, together produced 4.5 GW of electric power. That is already 6.2 GW of continuous power, nearly twice the 3.2 GW that Hinkley would have struggled to produce by 2030.

Even Amazon Will Be Swallowed Up
The most successful firms are merely small boats bobbing on the surface of a great and treacherous ocean. Others will take their place as new markets open. It will happen to Intel. It will happen to Amazon, too. And when it does, it’s unlikely to be a result of a lax corporate culture or employees who weren’t prepared to work weekends.

Teenagers Need Social Skills, Not Social Networks
Adolescents who want to get ahead at work need to spend a bit less time on their smartphones and get an awful lot better at studying the codes that come in flesh. They need to read the eyes, the frowns, the corners of a mouth. They need to read the set of a shoulder and a jaw. They need to know when a colleague needs a kind word or some quiet to get on with a deadline. They need to know that when the boss’s face goes red, you can’t just swipe left and move on.

Today's UK Sinkhole Is In Redruth
If you go back to 1750, the Redruth area was completely different - there were dozens of engine houses and hundreds of shafts in the area, which probably looked a bit like a desert. 'As mines closed, many put very large bits of timber across shafts and backfilled them, thinking this would be safe. Gradually all evidence of the engine houses and covered shafts went and we and builders before us assumed there was nothing there - apart from on the old maps of course. 'The old maps often clearly detail the layout of various mines and where shafts are. It is these maps which mean the difference between buying a house which might fall down a hole, or one which sits on firm ground.

Fukushima Clean-Up Is Taking Forty Years
Removal of nuclear fuel from power plant that suffered triple meltdown following 2011 tsunami could take 40 years or more. Radioactive fuel in three reactors melted down after the tsunami knocked out the plant’s cooling system on 11 March 2011. Tepco is persisting with the government’s roadmap for the Fukushima cleanup, which envisions fuel removal to begin in 2021 and end between 30 and 40 years later, at an estimated cost of almost $20bn (£14bn).

The hole, which is more than six feet deep, appeared in front of a house in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in November when home owner Emma James was mowing the lawn and felt the ground was spongy. The 45-year-old said: “It was giving way as I was standing on it and there was clearly a little hole there so we got a shovel to move the grass roots and it just caved in. "It was a bit scary and we all jumped back but when we looked down we couldn't see anything.

Yahoo Core Valued At $1 billion
Since 1997, there have been more than 120 smaller companies that Yahoo acquired to fuel Yahoo's growth. The company's reported transactions were purchased for a total of about $17 billion, and it divested about $1 billion, meaning that Yahoo gobbled up about $16 billion in new ideas and fresh talent without much apparent gain. And that's not even counting the acquisitions without reported transaction costs. Even with more than $30 billion in ownership of Alibaba and Yahoo Japan, the market is valuing the full company at about $28 billion as of earlier this week. If we factor out those stakes (after taxes) and the company's cash, the core of the company is apparently only worth a little over $1 billion.

Every industry and every company is different. It's important to report what matters to others in your company, not just what shows how awesome social media is. Does your product team look for feedback and feature requests? Collect it on social. Do you put on in-person events? Report on attendance and sentiment and show off photos and video.

Twitter Has Seen User Growth Stall
In tech, where many companies don’t make profits under traditional accounting measures, the promise of ever-growing popularity is a company’s main selling point to investors and employees. And without investors or employees, there isn’t much of a start-up. Even if some startups were a hit with the plugged-in and early adopters, many of the services appear to have hit a ceiling.

Is India’s $3.60 Smartphone Too Good To Be True?
On Wednesday evening a virtually unknown Indian company launched the "world's cheapest smartphone", named Freedom 251, for 251 rupees ($3.6; £2.50), in Delhi. The handset, from Ringing Bells, a company less than a year old and based in Noida near the capital, Delhi, is a 3G smartphone with specifications similar to phones at least 15 times more expensive. On Thursday, it opened its website freedom251.com for pre-orders with payments due in full in advance - the phone would be sold online over a five-day window. Deliveries are promised by June.

"Out there, taxpayers, our constituents, are very angry, they live in a different world clearly to the world you live in, if you can't even tell us what you are paid."

France is paving 621 miles of road with solar panels over the next five years, with the goal of providing cheap, renewable energy to five million people. Marketing Agencies Downsizing Every Year
Despite the decrease in marketing agency fees, marketing agencies are being asked to carry more and more of the marketing burden. Ten years ago, agencies were in charge of print, radio and television—now they are expected to be experts in traditional marketing, social, digital, programmatic, influencers, e-mail marketing, native advertising…. and pretty much anything else you can imagine.
