Ryan Prince14,728An informal photowalk around the historical city of Winchester, the capital of the Kingdom of Wessex. The walk will take place within the bounds of the old city, and there will be a chance to see parts of the old city walls, the West Gate, the Great Hall, Wolvesey Castle, and of course Winchester Cathedral (we won't be going inside as this would be an extra cost, but you are welcome to visit before or after the walk - http://www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk/). At the time of this walk, the famous Winchester Hat Fair will be taking place. The Hat Fair is the longest running arts fair in the UK and will certainly provide plenty of photo opportunities. Most of the fair is centred around the Cathedral, but be prepared to encounter performers anywhere around the city centre.  This photowalk will be limited to around 10 or 12 people.  If you are coming from afar, Winchester is on one of the main rail routes and is easily accessible from the A34 and M3. There are two very handy Park and Ride car parks - one to the south off M3 junction 11, and one to the east off M3 junction 10 (http://www.winchesterparkandride.co.uk/). *Note that the last bus to either park and ride is at about 6.30pm - check their timetable for precise details.* *Meeting Point: by Westgate, High Street.* *Info about The Great Hall:* suggested donation for large groups (which we will be) is £1.50 per person. From previous experience, tripods with rubber feet are permitted the The Great Hall. Photography is *not* permitted in the Long Gallery which off the main hall and leads to the shop.Winchester Photowalk2015-07-04 12:00:009
UK Photography Community364,472Open to any flavour of photo as long as it has at least one significant circle. Can be abstract as well as real life. This is NOT specific to crop circles - just thought the video was fun. Just let your imagination flow. Must be your photo.   No limit to the amount of images SO LONG AS THEY FIT THE EVENT THEME & YOU AND THE PICTURE ARE FROM THE UK and/or Crown Dependencies, not forgetting Ireland  :)  Any photograph that doesn't fit the theme will be removed, so make sure your image has a connection to that circle! We look forward to seeing the images you share. Have a great week everyone. The UKPC Admin Team ♥ any questions, please just leave a comment in the event stream and an admin will be in touch asapIMAGES WITH A DOMINANT CIRCLE OR CIRCLES2014-11-25 19:00:0061
UK Photography Community364,472An event to celebrate all things farmy - be it Farm houses, Barns, crops, tractors, farm animals, livestock auctions, etc. Showcase the great British and Irish Agricultural Industry and landscape! Just so you city dwellers have half a chance to participate it is open to your allotment crops and to any specialist Farmers Markets if you have them. Sorry but that doesn't mean the local duck pond or the vegetable section at Tesco's! The event doesn't open until Thursday 18th Sept and closes the following Monday. That gives you two weekends to get out there.  It's harvest time in many parts of the country, so no excuses for lack of Farmy activity! Must be your photo.   No limit to the amount of images SO LONG AS THEY FIT THE EVENT THEME & YOU AND THE PICTURE ARE FROM THE UK and/or Crown Dependencies, not forgetting Ireland  :)  Any photograph that doesn't fit the theme will be removed, so make sure your image has a connection to agriculture production (not supermarket sales). We look forward to seeing the images you share. Have a great week everyone. Alan Gurling2,774*London Capital Ring Photowalk 2014 - Section TEN* _Onwards the Northern Path!_ 24th August 2014, Sunday South Kenton to Hendon Park - http://j.mp/1omYpCO Download Guide (PDF) - http://j.mp/V9rc0I Download Map (PDF) - http://j.mp/1nF5KHI *- - - - Background Story - - - -* I've decided that for 2014, I will be doing the London Capital Ring http://j.mp/1nTGfqs and will be completing it before the year ends. To make sure I cover everything before the year ends, and give allowance for unforeseen circumstances, I will be doing a section every three weeks. So far, I've been able to cover NINE sections with fellow awesome photowalkers Christin Tietjen, Simon Freeman, and Peter McClintock. *- - - - The walks, so far - - - -* Section 1 - Woolwich Foot Tunnel to Falconwood was done on 25 January 2014. A great walk, we passed through the most magnificent Severndroog Castle, and passed by many parks! This was one of the longest walks though. Section 2 - Falconwood to Grove Park was done on 22 February 2014. Shorter walk, but we got fantastic views around Eltham Palace at the end. Section 3 - Grove Park to Crystal Palace. Some magnificent sceneries mostly from Beckenham Park! A very photogenic bridge, and the big house by the golf course were beautiful highlights of this walk. I highly recommend this walk. Section 4 - Crystal Palace to Streatham Common / I have to say that this was so far, the one with the least amount of good stuff to take photos of. The Rookery in Streatham Common, just before the walk ends does save it though. Section 5 - Streatham Common to Wimbledon Park. Wonderful surprises! This was a very nice walk, and the forecast for the day being rainy, we were instead greeted with long sunny spells! Lots of fine scenery and Wandsworth Common took us by surprise. We ended the walk at a very fine pub/restaurant called The Woodman. Section 6 - Wimbledon Park to Richmond Bridge. Started sunny then heavy rains. Still, we were able to end it with some nice blue skies at Richmond Bridge and ended at a pub that's been there for hundreds of years! Section 7 - Has to be the highlight so far. Richmond is just photogenic! I highly recommend doing this route and ending after Syon Park. Section 8 - We pretty much followed the River Brent around. Had a nice view of the Hanwell Viaduct, as well as taking a detour through the Bunny Park. Section 9 - Probably one of the most tiring walks we've had! Two big hills (Horsenden Hill, and Harrow on the Hill) climbed, but it was very much worth it. Forecast was rain, but it was only for a short while. Stopped at THREE pubs on the day! We were given great views from both hills, and experienced the beautiful town in Harrow. The walk ended with a pizza meal at a local establishment in Kenton! *- - - - Travel Arrangements for the Day - - - -* The start of this journey can be reached via the London Overground Line & Bakerloo: The station is South Kenton. The walk ends at Hendon Central (Northern Line) andLondon Capital Ring Photowalk 2014 - Section TEN2014-08-24 11:00:004

Matt Shalvatis34,257This Sunday, November 11th, and every Sunday thereafter, is Sunday Music Mania day.  So what is it?  It’s a day where we share our favorite music with a worldwide G+ audience.  Find your favorite music on YouTube to share!   View last week’s shared playlist here…  http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqmb6HZAshGZ5vkoDJUwd1uDL-1vqubQy The Sunday Music Mania Quick Participation Guide! *It takes only five minutes to submit your favorite music!  Here’s what to do…* 1. Go to YouTube and find the song you want to share.  Copy the video’s URL (YouTube address). 2. Go to Google Plus.  Go to your “Share What’s New” box.  Click the video icon, paste in the URL from YouTube.  The video will be inserted into the post. 3. (Optional)  Share some additional information about this song.  Things like Genre (Rock, Country, Classical, etc), language (English, Spanish, etc) whether safe for work or not, and why you like it.   Song title and artist are generally inserted automatically.   4. Add the tag #SundayMusicMania , and +Sunday Music Mania and +Matt Shalvatis.  This is so I and others can find your post, and so you will receive the shared playlist.   5. Add a few circles, click Share and you’re done!   NOTES:  Before you post, you may want to view and listen to a video first, because not all videos are of the same quality.  What really counts here is the audio quality.  Many videos, especially of older songs, don’t really have a video at all.  Sometimes it’s just a 3 minute picture of the album cover.  So go for the good audio and don’t worry about the video portion.  That’s what we’re looking for!   NOTES:  For Listeners and Participants.  Please keep in mind the above are recommendations.  Please do not assume videos that you are not familiar with are automatically “Safe for Work,” even if they say so. *Anything else I should know?* Yes!  Please limit your entries to this theme to once a week.  This theme runs every Sunday; you’ll have plenty of time to submit all your favorites.  *What’s that tag and page again?*  The tag is #SundayMusicMania and +Sunday Music Mania!  Use it and share it! Sunday Music Mania - A Musical Extravaganza! - Week #42012-11-10 23:00:0017

Very interesting. Why do we test students, give them grades, and then move on to the next subject without addressing what they got wrong - mastery seems to make a lot more sense.

A faster way to share photos and videos, and all-new movies

Sharing all the photos from your weekend with friends can be hard: Not everyone uses the same apps, texting can be slow, and email has attachment limits.

Now, with Google Photos, you pick the photos, tap “share” and select the people you want to share with, instead of the apps — and we take care of the rest. If your friends are on Google Photos, they’ll get a notification. If you share via phone number, they’ll get a link to the photos and videos via SMS. And email addresses will get an email with a link from Google Photos. So you can spend less time toggling from app to app to share photos — dealing with failed texts or email attachment limits along the way — and more time enjoying life’s photo-worthy moments.

We’re also upping our game when it comes to automatic creations.

We’re also upping our game when it comes to automatic creations.

Google Photos has always made movies for you using your recently uploaded photos. Now we’re going further, with new movies that are based on creative concepts — the kinds of movies you might make yourself, if you just had the time. And they’re not only limited to your most recent uploads.

😶

Fanny pack phone holder is the worst accessory ever

The Handee Holder is a fanny pack with a telescoping phone holder, so you can watch and use your phone hands-free.

Do I have to spell out why this is horrible? OK:

1. It's a bulky, complicated wearable contraption that does nothing but hold your phone.

2. It's a fucking fanny pack

3. It looks like you've got an erection with a phone attached to it

Please don't fund this!

Stranger Things

Unhindered by the usual studio restrictions, Netflix knocks it out of the park again with their original series Stranger Things. I'm late to the party having started watching yesterday, and I'll be watching Chapter 7 in a moment. I have to say that the casting appears to be perfect, with stand-out performances by Wynona Ryder and relative new-comer Millie Bobby Brown. The visual feel of the show is stunning, and the soundtrack - from the incidental music to the pop and rock songs - is on point.

If you have the chance, watch it!

Canon launches EOS M5 - its best mirrorless yet!

Today Canon launches the EOS M5, its most serious mirrorless camera to date. It's the first EOS M with a built-in electronic viewfinder, a 2.36 Million dot OLED that, despite fairly modest magnification, delivers a crisp image with a smooth 120fps refresh. This is complemented by a large 3.2in screen that tilts up by 90 degrees or down by 180. Inside, the EOS M5 employs a 24 Megapixel sensor - the highest for an EOS M to date - but more importantly becomes Canon's first mirrorless camera to feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF which allows up to 80% of the sensor area to double-up as phase-detect AF points, supporting smooth and confident continuous AF for stills and movies.

It'll shoot up to 7fps with continuous AF, film 1080 movies up to 60p with five-axis digital stabilisation (sadly no 4k though), and features an always-on... more »

It'll shoot up to 7fps with continuous AF, film 1080 movies up to 60p with five-axis digital stabilisation (sadly no 4k though), and features an always-on low-power Bluetooth link to make Wifi connections easier - in fact you can copy images using the phone app without even touching the camera. The quicker response of Bluetooth is also exploited in a new app as a remote shutter release. It's Canon's most serious mirrorless camera to date, but is it still competitive against rivals? Find out in my Canon EOS M5 preview where I went hands-on with a pre-production model - see link below.

PS - Expect the EOS M5 at the end of November at a body price of $979 USD / 1049 GBP or in a kit with the new EF-M 18-150mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM lens for $1479 USD / 1399 GBP.

I'm just in the process of updating my iPad Mini 2 (which has taken longer than usual as it needed an iTunes update too, and for some reason my Windows 10 PC didn't want me to do that!). I stopped using OTA updates after an update borked my iPhone 6 last year.

Uh oh! iOS 10 is bricking some iPads and iPhones, so users may want to hold off on updating or install the update via iTunes.

In a case which threatens to cause turmoil for thousands if not millions of websites, the Court of Justice of the European Union decided today that a website that merely links to material that infringes copyright, can itself be found guilty of copyright infringement, provided only that the operator knew or could reasonably have known that the material was infringing. Worse, they will be presumed to know of this if the links are provided for "the pursuit of financial gain".

Well it's only taken me mumble-mumble months to work it out, but I've finally worked out why my back-ups were taking so long to run. It appears that as well as having the Windows 10 back-up running, I was also running the old Windows 7-style back-up running - effectively running the same back-up twice.

D'oh!

After Dropbox forced a password reset on any user who hadn't changed their login credentials since mid-2012 -- due to a hack faced by the company that year -- new information has surfaced recently detailing the extent of the user data leak. According to a collection of files obtained by Motherboard, containing the email addresses and hashed passwords of the affected user base, a total of 68,680,741 Dropbox accounts were successfully targeted during the 2012 hack. When Dropbox announced it was going through with the preventative password reset measure last week, the company didn't give any hint as to the extent of the users touched by the four-year-old hack. The "incident," as Dropbox refers to it, was a data breach in the summer of 2012 where a few users began reporting spam sent to email addresses connected to a Dropbox account. Due to a password hack connected to other websites, hackers were able to sign in to "a small number" of Dropbox accounts, including an employee's who had access to a document listing an array of user email addresses. Dropbox is confident its message to users last week has covered "all potentially impacted users," and the company is encouraging users to still reset passwords on other services that have the same login information, particularly passwords, previously used for Dropbox. “We've confirmed that the proactive password reset we completed last week covered all potentially impacted users," said Patrick Heim, Head of Trust and Security for Dropbox. "We initiated this reset as a precautionary measure, so that the old passwords from prior to mid-2012 can’t be used to improperly access Dropbox accounts. We still encourage users to reset passwords on other services if they suspect they may have reused their Dropbox password.” As Motherboard discovered, nearly 32 million of the affected accounts were secured with the strong hashing function bcrypt, "meaning it is unlikely that hackers will be able to obtain many of the users' actual passwords." The other half of the passwords had a slightly less secure SHA-1 aging algorithm and were salted with a random string of characters to further strengthen them. Since 2012, Dropbox has changed up this password and account hashing process several times in attempt to make sure every user remains secure. Motherboard confirmed that none of the four files, which total 5GB of collected user login data, appear to be anywhere on the dark web. Also, given Dropbox's aggressive measures taken in the past week, their value will continue to "diminish" over time. Tag: Dropbox Discuss this article in our forums___

I visited the Wellcome Collection last year for their forensics exhibition, which was extremely good, so I'll definitely be adding this to my diary.

Tim Cook has posted an open letter on Apple's website in response to the European Commission's ruling that Apple must pay 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes dating from 2003 through 2014. Cook's letter begins by discussing Apple's long history in Ireland, which dates back to a small facility that housed 60 employees in 1980. That statistic has now expanded to 6,000 employees across Ireland in total, benefiting both the company and local economies. As it's grown, Cook says that Apple has become "the largest taxpayer in the world," and that "Apple follows the law and we pay all the taxes we owe." Tim Cook has posted an open letter on Apple's website in response to the European Commission's ruling that Apple must pay 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes dating from 2003 through 2014. Cook's letter begins by discussing Apple's long history in Ireland, which dates back to a small facility that housed 60 employees in 1980. That statistic has now expanded to 6,000 employees across Ireland in total, benefiting both the company and local economies. As it's grown, Cook says that Apple has become "the largest taxpayer in the world," and that "Apple follows the law and we pay all the taxes we owe." Directly confronting the European Commission's ruling, Cook claims that the EC has "launched an effort to rewrite Apple's history in Europe." As responsible corporate citizens, we are also proud of our contributions to local economies across Europe, and to communities everywhere. As our business has grown over the years, we have become the largest taxpayer in Ireland, the largest taxpayer in the United States, and the largest taxpayer in the world. Over the years, we received guidance from Irish tax authorities on how to comply correctly with Irish tax law — the same kind of guidance available to any company doing business there. In Ireland and in every country where we operate, Apple follows the law and we pay all the taxes we owe. The Apple CEO points out that the claim -- stating Ireland gave Apple a "special deal" on its taxes -- is completely false and "has no basis in fact or in law." Cook thinks the commission's ruling also has the potential to set a dangerous precedent, because it is attempting to replace tangible Irish tax laws "with a view of what the Commission thinks the law should have been." The opinion issued on August 30th alleges that Ireland gave Apple a special deal on our taxes. This claim has no basis in fact or in law. We never asked for, nor did we receive, any special deals. We now find ourselves in the unusual position of being ordered to retroactively pay additional taxes to a government that says we don't owe them any more than we've already paid. Apple's next move is to appeal the Commission's ruling, which Ireland is said to be doing as well, with Cook remaining "confident" that the decision will ultimately be reversed and the company won't have to pay the 13 billion euros after all. Throughout all of the current drama and turmoil, Cook reiterates that Apple is "committed to Ireland" and that the company has no plans to stop investing in a future not only for its customers there, but its employees as well.
