Lennox is making the argument from morality.  However, there's a very large problem with that.  IF there is a very powerful, or perhaps an all-powerful creator God, this God would be morally responsible for every single thing that exists or occurs in the creation, including nasty natural events and human immorality.  This leads directly to both the Problem of Evil and the freedom of the universe.  The Problem of Evil has never been solved by any Christian theologian and cannot be because of the disjunction between the nature of what is clearly an unmoral universe and the purported morality of the creator God.  And then the freedom of the universe and the freedom of the human beings therein: Both are utterly impossible under the creation by an all-powerful God.  That God automatically swamps any possibility of any sort of freedom.  Here the Presbyterians got it right within the context of theirtheolo... more »

Why we don't want to die: At death, we stop Experiencing.  And we don't want to stop Experiencing.  Even if we have a copy of ourselves with all our memories nearby, if we die,  WE stop experiencing.  At that point, the copy becomes another Self, not Me.

Where did he get those figures on American deaths in the construction industry?  OSHA records are as follows:

4,383 workers were killed on the job in 2012 [BLS revised 2012 workplace fatality data*] (3.2 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers) – on average, more than 84 a week or nearly 12 deaths every day. (This is the second lowest preliminary total since the fatal injury census was first conducted in 1992.)

The total killed are in every area of work, including mining and farming, not just construction.  A whole lot less than he was claiming.  Probably a few hundred in construction.  Too many, of course, but again far fewer than he claimed.

He's missing one possibility.  High-tech drop outs.  In short, instead of companies and governments laying off people, people start dropping out because their tech allows them to support themselves in style.  What may happen is the crumbling of large institutions because the work they are doing now will not be needed anymore.

This has to be one of the most persuasive essays I've ever read on why America became the world's leading power in such a relatively short time.  The author's argument depends mostly on geography and partially on American willingness to take full advantage of its geographic advantages.

This essay totally debunks libertarian assertions about supposedly historical American isolationism and non-interventionism.  We didn't take control over the world's richest agricultural region along with the best navigable river system by being pacifist wallflowers.

Read and enjoy.

This quote is particularly appropriate for Truth Warriors:

“The word 'truth' itself ceases to have its old meaning. It describes no longer something to be found, with the individual conscience as the sole arbiter of whether in any particular instance the evidence (or the standing of those proclaiming it) warrants a belief; it becomes something to be laid down by authority, something which has to believed in the interest of unity of the organized effort and which may have to be altered as the exigencies of this organized effort require it.”
