This is by far the best video I've seen about the ACA.  I thought I knew most of the major details about it, but I learned several things from this.  It's put out by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Our family had another close call today... My in-laws live in Moore, OK and the tornado that hit today devastated their neighborhood. Their house is still standing and they are okay, but 3/4 of their neighborhood is gone. Luckily a neighbor had a storm shelter they used, but all windows are blown out and a tree was sitting on their kitchen table.

As some may remember from my prior posts my brother is a West EMT and if the explosion in West had been 30 minutes sooner he would've been one of the fallen.

We feel so defenseless given we live almost 300 miles from my in-laws, and if I thought I could get in there i'd take a generator up there this evening. My father-in-law said they're not letting anyone in, though they're staying home just in case looters show-up. Crazy we were just up there last month.

To all the cord cutters, can someone suggest a simple way to capture OTA HD programming on OSX?  I've seen the El Gato EyeTV, but that thing is like $200.  Surely there's something else.    Rather not resort to bittorrent if I can avoid it.

This is neat to hear.  I was like 11 when Farpoint aired, and I stayed up late that night to watch it plus recorded it after one of my parent's shows.  Blah thing is I fell asleep half way through which was about the same time the tape ran out, and it was about 2 years later before I found someone with a copy I could borrow.

But from that first episode I recorded almost every Trek episode each week even through DS9.  So I have this box of VHS tapes labeled and cataloged in our garage using my old VCR's counter on when each episode starts, plus I recorded specials and anything related to Trek.  I think it's like 45 tapes.  I have an episode of Good Morning America filmed on the TNG set, an episode of Reading Rainbow from PBS (hosted by LeVar Burton of course) filmed on the set, an episode of Primetime Live (old news program) where Deforest Kelley gave a tour of the TNG set, andsome ... more »

I have most of these on DVD now plus they're all online through Netflix, but still I can't part with these old tapes.  But dang, I can't believe this was 26 years ago.  I feel old knowing I can measure events in my life by quarter centuries :-D

I generally pride myself on being up on the latest technology, but just recently I started looking at VUDU and other services that use the #Ultraviolet codes that some DVD's and BD's now have.  Maybe we just never had a simple way to play them, but with our #Roku I installed #Vudu, linked it to a new UV account, and scoured our movie collection for any movies that had UV codes.  Unfortunately most that did the code is missing thanks to the kids.  Most of the times the codes listed in the cases are for crappy games or 'free' stuff, but in these few instances I think we could've used them.

But at least we have the last Harry Potter, the new Star Trek movie, and Rock of Ages out there, I did have those plus the 10 free movies they added to our account which was neat.

I took back the Chromecast and picked up a Roku 3 instead. About $65 more, but it does exactly what I hoped the Chromecast would do which is a stream content from our Mac. Within about 10 minutes I had the Plex software setup and streaming like a Boss.

So #Roku is definitely the way to go.

Okay, I'm finally working on some videos to post to Youtube showing how to do some MS SQL stuff, and my first venture is to install a MS SQL 2012 cluster from the ground up in a VM environment.  It'll cover downloading eval copies of Windows 2008 R2 and SQL 2012 (yeah I'm still not all up on Win 2012 clustering yet), Virtualbox, and freenas, then building the domain, iSCSi interfaces, and a two node Active/Active cluster.  Heck I'm even planning on using mount points, dual network cards, and everything else to hopefully demo it as close to a production level installation as possible.

If anyone would be interested in such a tutorial please let me know.  Or if anyone has other videos you think would help the MS SQL DBA community please let me know.  Replication will probably be the next thing I show since after this I'll have two instances of MS SQL setup and ready touse.... more »

They opened an #ALDI grocery store in town earlier this year, and we finally stopped by there to do our weekly grocery shopping.  I have to say my wife and I were both impressed!  We walking out at $53 compared to two or three times that at our usual grocery store, which was NICE.  We'll have to pick-up a few niche things from our regular grocery store sometime this week, but I'd say 95% of what we normally get they had.

Anyone else shop there?

Can anyone suggest a good, simple backup solution for Linux?  I know there are a plethora of shell apps that do this, but I need something simple to where i get home, plug in my external storage drive (USB), and it just starts backing-up changes.  I hate to site an Apple product here, but something that works like Time Machine on OSX which does a darned good job at backing-up our Mac.  And versioning would be nice...

The way I backup now whenever is more or less just connecting my drive, creating a new folder with the current date, and copying everything over. It takes forever and I have tons of duplicated data, so grossly inefficient.

Thanks for any suggestions.

What a loss... A.C. Crispin is my all time favorite Trek author, and her TNG novel The Eyes of the Beholders was one of the first Trek novels I read when I was a teen. And Yesterday's Son is by far one of my faves. Seems she got lots of recognition from her Star Wars novels, but I've never read any of those.

Too sad, 63 is way too young.

We finished Torchwood season 3 last night, and I have to say as a parent that was the most disturbing 5 episodes of any series I've ever seen. Also I hope it didn't ruin the new Doctor for me given this was the first major role I've seen that actor play.

Who knows if anything will come of this, but I'm installing Windows XP now in VirtualBox on my Mac, then I'll be installing Synchronet BBS.  It's been a few years since I ran a BBS, but I've really got the bug to get back into it.

Now being the Linux fanatic I am this'll be the first time I've ran Sync on Windows since I ran it on Windows 2000 almost 12 years ago.  But given I really want to get some games and classic doors going running this on XP might be the simplest way to get going quickly given I wouldn't have to mess with DOSEMU or the like.

So if anyone's interested in helping out or being a co-Sysop please let me know.  Also I really want to do this right, so I'll be firing up TheDraw to make some custom ANSI graphics or maybe dust off my old 5.25 inch or 3.5 inch floppies to grab some of the ones I collected and created years ago. more »

Wow!  This just popped up in my G+ feed,  I can totally confirm this video, I was Assistant Manager of a Wendy's for about 3 years while in college during the mid 90's, and we still used this video to train new cooks.   Hopefully they've upgraded their training program since then.

Wendy's Grill Skills video from 1986. It's actually a training video. You gotta wait fro it, but it's 100% worth it.

We took the kids to the local comic book store for the first time today, and the kids did great!  The owner helped us find some good starter comics that are age appropriate for our 6 year old, and it was a fun walk down memory lane.

I have to admit though, if I could go back in time I'd SO kick my 12 year old self's ass for throwing out so much stuff.  I found stuff from Transformers, He-Man, Star Wars, and more that I had and destroyed as a kid that's now worth some major bucks.

I think the biggest blah is when I was maybe 19 or 20 I threw out my HUGE box of Garbage Pail Kids.  I had collected them for a few years and had every one,3 or 4 copies even of some of the cards.  I'd say hundreds of those cards and complete sets of the original series.  Yeah they're worth THOUSANDS according to the comic book guy.  He had a box of second and third series cardshe was ... more »

Oh, I am going to miss Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. I am excited about who the Twelfth Doctor is going to be. I will still miss The Eleventh just like I still miss all the Doctor's faces. Well it is in the future we still have the 50th anniversary to look forward to and we get to see Ten again. So Christmas will be bittersweet this year 2013.

I really like +Lady Soliloque  and am glad to see she is making fan videos again.  Lady Soliloque really does a great job at making fan videos and they are all brilliant.

I have to admit as much of a nerd as I am I've never watched any of the original Star Wars movies from beginning to end. Always been more of a Trekkie.

Okay, this week we've been hitting 104 or higher each day, and in the last three days we've had three lines of ants coming into the house, twice in the kitchen and once in the living room.  And what's worse is they're Red Imported Fire Ants ... I've already treated outside most of the house with Ortho Home Defense and I'm calling the exterminator (we actually have a contract with one) on Monday to come treat the entire exterior again.

No fun waking up to those turds raiding your bread basket.

Okay I'm feeling really tech nostalgic right now.  Remember when these were the things you looked at on a computer before buying?
- Number of 8-bit and/or 16-bit ISA Slots
- Number of Serial or Parallel Ports
- 83 or 101 key keyboard
- Number of Floppy Drives, and whether they're SD or DD
- Number of Drive bays
- Math CoProcessor installed or not
- If Video is available, Hercules, CGA, EGA, or VGA
- Size of Hard drive and whether MFM or IDE
- Which DOS (MS-DOS, DR-DOS, etc) -- I preferred DR-DOS personally

and I'm sure there are other factors though I can't remember others off hand. I almost put modem speed, but i can't remember any mother boards from the 80's or even early 90's having a modem built on board.

Oh hum, those were the days.

Anyone else use Prodigy Online back in the MS-DOS days?  I first tried both Prodigy and AOL around 1990 (give or take a year), and this login screen for Prodigy brings back SO many memories.  I always used the freebie accounts they offered, but I think at one time after I started working in high school I did become a paying member of Prodigy for a short time.

Okay, this new Nexus 7 is nice, but other than the possible option of a 4G add-on (which is 'coming soon') and the rear facing camera I'm not seeing anything that would really make me buy it given I already have a 16 Gig first gen Nexus 7.  One thing I didn't see in the specs is whether or not there's video out, and though that'd definitely be nice I can't say it'd be a reason to invest $200+ in a new tablet.

Am I missing something else major?

Okay, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around Peter Capaldi being the next Doctor.  Granted I'd never heard of him until the BBC Special today, but given his age and the fact that we've seen him as an extra in both Doctor Who and Tourchwood it'll be hard to swallow.  But I said the same thing about Tennant when we watched the last Christopher Eccleston episode.

Well we finally got our office at home setup, and it's NICE!  We have a small 11x12 foot room at the front of our house our builder called a 'life space', and it's just been more of a media/play room for the kids since we moved in about three years ago.  After investing more then expected a Ikea we now have an amazing office with the Besta shelves, two desks, and a Billy bookshelf for my wife's craft stuff.  Also our iMac is just alittle smaller than the TV we've had in here, so it's now in our bedroom and the iMac is our 'TV' in the office for when the kids want to crash.

Now I have an area to finally do some podcasting or even create some tech tutorial videos I've  been wanting to do for a while.

Well here's something interesting, we finally got our office setup (yeah it's Total Ikea), and in doing this we moved our iMac to it and now my wife and I have a place to setup our laptops in the evening.

Last night we were streaming video on the iMac, and within about a minute after turning on my laptop (System76 laptop running Xubuntu 12.04) the iMac dropped off the network.  Still getting full signal to the wireless router but no connectivity beyond that.... couldn't even get to the router's web console.

I checked the wireless network channels on both the iMac and my laptop and both were set on channel 11, 2.462Ghz, So today I changed my laptop to Channel 13, 2.472Ghz and changed the MTU on the iMac to 1470 (not that that'll probably do much good) and it seems to have fixed the problem.  At least a Ping to Google on the iMac has been going for about 10min... more »

CNet is posting some info about the new Nexus 7, which I hope they give it a different name to save confusion.  The one thing that stood out in this CNet article is both  front and rear facing camera, which having a rear facing camera would be nice though I wouldn't buy a new N7 just for that.  now if it had video out and an expansion port for a SD Card, that may prompt a good look.
