Lotus Carroll1,770,689This is the Event for our November Self Portrait Challenge: Cinematic. What this means is let your images be inspired by the look and feel of moving films, cinema, movies! Basically, they'll look like stills taken from a movie - drama, mystery, and action are all great genres to focus on. Location, lighting and angles will play key roles in your imagery, as well as your post processing technique for color, cropping, and more. Here is where you enter your ONE Cinematic Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST November 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified.Tips & InspirationLike most things, there are many ways to achieve this kind of look (just as there are many styles of cinema!), so find a style that suits you and work with it. This +Fstoppers article has some interesting information that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/KhWR79  A good thing to remember when creating your image is that movies tell stories. As such, the story being told by your photo will have a huge impact on how "good" the finished product is - does your one image effectively pack the punch to tell a story? I think that the greatest cinematic images have great scene, lighting, angles, post processing (color, cropping, etc) and ALSO have been set-up such that they tell a story with impact.Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. The header for this Event was created by +Jason Mayers. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything. Prizes*1 Year +SmugMug Portfolio Account http://www.smugmug.com/features*$150 Gift Certificate for +November Self Portrait Challenge: Cinematic2014-11-23 07:00:00102

Drink and Click™ Seattle, Washington116Our next Drink and Click event is happening in the fun & funky Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle. Tons and tons of bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and street photography await us as we meander around drinking and clicking. You don't have to drink alcohol either. Many of our members do not drink and they still come over for a good talk and networking. The first place we’ll all meet at is set in an old library. It’s Seattle’s only pub dedicated to all things Australian & New Zealander, the Kangaroo and Kiwi. It’s a great spot with lots of open space for us to hang out, shoot, and grab a few drinks. After we’re done here, we’ll wander around Market St and Leary Way wherever we may feel like heading to. The locks are nearby too, potentially a fun spot to catch the sun setting towards the end of the event.March Monthly Challenge! As usual, there's a monthly challenge with the event and this months' theme is Shallow Depth of Field, with awesome prizes from +Gary Fong Flash Diffusers, +c't Digital Photography, and +Trey Ratcliff. More info for the challenge can be found here: https://plus.google.com/events/cqhl3cme6cdparii4m541n63drgHope to see you! Cheers!+Jacob Lucas.Seattle Drink and Click - Ballard2014-03-23 16:00:0030

Thomas Hawk7,489,492The one and only +Camera Labs Guru +Gordon Laing is coming to town and we are going to celebrate in style.  Join us on Thursday, October 11th for a special dinner / photowalk.  We are going to start the evening off at 5:30pm at Henry Hunan's on Sansome Street in San Francisco (note there are several Henry Hunan's, this is the one on Sansome in North Beach).  We'll enjoy some of San Francisco's best chinese food and then head up to go shoot the tallest building in SF, the Transamerica Building at sunset/dusk.  We'll shoot the building from the Montgomery Street overlook -- one of the best locations to shoot This iconic William Pereira spire from.  Afterwards we'll float around North Beach shooting more of the historic architecture and night life before ending up the night at Specs' Twelve Adler Museum for a few later evening adult beverages.  Specs' is a throwback to old school San Francisco that the SF Weekly describes as "one of the few bars left where you can ask for a martini and get a cold glass of gin and a little vermouth without having to answer a bunch of damn fool questions."Rumor has it the smoothest dude alive +Daniel Krieger will also be joining us from NYC and +Suzanne Haggerty will be up from Los Angeles.  What a great night for photography this will be.  Come on out for a great G+ Photography evening!A San Francisco Dinner/Photowalk with Gordon Laing2012-10-11 17:30:00132

Scott Jarvie393,402UPDATE: it's online now: http://youtu.be/-DItFCAg4jM We like to call this a "PLUS ONE PARTY"Because people submit links to their albums and we look through the pictures and we plus one the pictures we like in the album. It's my way of giving quick feedback to people about which pictures really catch my attention out of their images. It's quick and yet helpful.Last time we looked at over 120 albumsLIVE PUBLIC HANGOUTYep it'll be a live public hangout again.Shorter and more awesome than last time.So if you LINK us an album make sure you know they will be on video and then on youtube. We're both really nice people and with people pictures we worry about commentary for fear they're related to you or something. But we may make commentary and you gotta be alright with that as well. The video won't be edited when it goes onto youtube.I'm basically saying: The easily offended need not applyTHEME = PEOPLE PICTURES+Susan Marinello and myself have a separate project going on where we're spending dozens of hours researching to find great photographers and create the most awesome list of "people shooters"https://plus.google.com/u/0/100962871525684315897/posts/UMBDiPKJqKaSo therefore we've made the theme this time to People pictures as well because that's what mood we're in.If you already have an album like that share it. Or maybe put together another one in the next 24hrs that you'd like us to go through. Professional work, weddings, families, kids, selfies, street candids, models etcJOIN INThis time we'll be linking the albums and having people join us as we go through the pictures... so you may be getting a lot more plus ones (eyeballs) than normal.FAQWe won't be looking at non-people pictures even if they're in the album. We'd rather not look at crazy large albums so try to keep them under 50 (but we can be a bit lenient)Please submit open/public albums specially since other people than myself will be wanting to view.Make sure you're following myself (+Scott Jarvie ) and +Susan MarinelloAlbum Viewing Party - People Themed (A Jarvie Production)2012-09-24 05:00:0077
Jeff Smith61,003Welcome to The Selfy Sunday Project for Sept. 16/12Theme: Tales from the Dark SideOtherwise know as a warm up for Halloween. Show us your dark side. It it could be spooky or scary, sinister or moody, perhaps your alter ego, but I know you have been there, now its time to bring it out.Well lets not be too sinister - we are here to have some fun !As always the lovely +LaDonna Pride will be helping along the way as our co-host. Michael Bonocore241,975Allright, Somehow +Lotus Carroll and +Juan Gonzalez decided that since I like to drink (and click) so much, I should head the San Francisco chapter of   #DrinkAndClick . Well, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!The second installment of   #DrinkAndClickSF  will be held next Thursday, June 28. Since we have some special Googlers in from out of town (+Sara Eleta   and +Amanda Janney ) we will meeting at 5:30 PM at Red's Java House on the Embarcadero. What better way to show off our amazing city and spend a beautiful Thursday afternoon than under them SF iconic landmark, the Bay Bridge? From there, we will drink and click down the waterfront, eventually making our way towards AT&T Park. The Giants are hosting the Cincinnati Reds that evening, so there should be a lively atmosphere, with plenty of street photography to mix in with the usual Bay Bridge and Waterfront photos. There will be free schwag, drink specials, photography talk, friendships being born, friendships being ended, and a plethora of fun photos that you will most likely regret in the morning. You do NOT need to Drink to be a part of the #DrinkAndClick . Beer, Whiskey, or Water, the goal is to have fun with fellow photographers....so no pressure! There will also be a photo contest in the week following the event in which we will give out AWESOME prizes to the best photo in each designated category. Categories to be announced shortly. So drink, click, and be merry!PLEASE RSVP VIA COMMENT IN THIS POST! I will add you to the   #DrinkAndClickSF circle to keep you in the loop of information regarding this adventure and future monthly #DrinkAndClickSF  #DrinkAndClick   Drink And Click SF!2012-06-28 17:30:0017

Dustin W. Stout34,995The Most Interesting Ladies On Google+!Part 5 of my #circlesplosion  series has finally arrived! If you're not familiar with Circlesplosion be sure to read about it here: dustn.tv/circlesplosion/After sorting through 500 comments and over 1,000+mentions I have finished curating this circle of the Most Interesting Ladies on Google+! And by "ladies" I mean it in the highest regard with the utmost respect. These are women who are exceptional examples of leadership, inspiration, encouragement, entertainment, and just plain fun! This list was carefully curated with intentional attention to thoughtful recommendations, interaction, and engagement. Though I don't know all of them (yet) I am confident that they are absolutely worth adding to your own circles! I will also not that this circle is incredibly diverse-- artists, doctors, business women, entrepreneurs, bloggers, crafters, geeks (self-proclaimed), writers, trainers, and women who are awesome for a whole lot of reasons. What to do with this circleAdd this circle and take some time to monitor the stream over the next week. Find those that you really connect with or are inspired by and add them to another of your relevant circles. Do so until you believe you've added everyone of relevance and interest to you and then delete this circle (unless of course you just want to keep it-- that's fine too). I hope you make some great connections, I know I have already. And be sure to let me know in the comments below what you'd like to see the next #circlesplosion   project to be. :D #sharedcircles   #ns  2014-02-21 18:43:192589784129

Nick Zantop8,758I haven't shared my G+ photographers circle in a while, but it's got some new faces in it so it's probably about time! While there are undoubtedly some familiar faces in this circle, most people will find a lot of photographers in it who they haven't connected with before. I always find that most of the shared photography circles tend to be a bit stale with the same people in them, some of whom haven't been on G+ in ages. This circle takes a different approach — some circle members have only a few dozen followers while others have several thousand. What they all have in common is that they share great #photography  on a regular basis. If I included you in this circle, there's nothing you have to do to stay in it besides continue sharing great photos. :)Please feel free to share, these photographers will fill your home stream with beautiful photos every day.  #sharedcircles   #photographycircle   #circleshare  2014-02-12 01:05:0639691013

One of my Photography mentors is +Don Giannatti. I have an awful lot of love and respect for this guy. He is a wonderful cheer leader for photographers trying to break into the commercial business of being a photographer &  his advice, coming from a place of experience, is always spot on. I have learned so much from him in the last 10 months of being one of his students and feel grateful to have found him just when I needed him. This article will give you a taster of what he has been teaching us. Now I just need to put more of the plans into action and see myself grow from here...

Black & White Challenge PLUS Split Toning Challenge Day 5

After a couple of days delay, I have dipped into my archives again to practice some black and white and some split tone processing to round out and finish this challenge. Hurrah!
This is Tom Feltner a musician I photographed a few months ago. We had a laugh and fun experimenting with laser projections in the studio. At the time I had gelled my speed-light with a rich blue gel, hence the inspiration for my split tone du jour. Apart from missing the green from the laser beams and the red of the guitar, this version actually isn't that far from the original image.

Black & White Challenge PLUS Split Toning Challenge Day 4

For day 4 of the double challenge I dipped into the archives to dig out an image I took 2 years ago. I had processed this in B&W at the time but when I reloaded it today I was frankly quite horrified at my prior skills. In the time since then I have learned so much about processing and retouching, that the 2012 version looked rather sorry for itself. I decided to start over with the processing, and also practice my freckle work and this is the result. For my split toning version I decided to venture into the green palette. Because, after all, green is a great complement to Red Riding Hood, right???

Black & White Challenge PLUS Split Toning Challenge Day 3

I love to shoot +Grace Gray. Not only does she have some wicked posing skills, she also works as a hair and make up artist and she has the most incredible red hair. The colour of her hair inspired the direction in which I would take the split toning challenge today. You may recognise Grace from my Siren Songs editorial. She is, the Siren with the long, pre-Raphaelite-esque red hair. (https://plus.google.com/+SamBreach/posts/Z5yBzP96X9y)

Black & White Challenge PLUS Split Toning Challenge Day 2

Behind the Scenes with Star High Beauty Hair
On a recent photo shoot, the hair stylist asked me to take a picture of the back of the hair because it couldn't be seen. It was more than worth a shot because it was beautifully tussled and romantic, just like I had requested. When it came to split toning, I decided to go for a colour combination that would go some way to reflect the outcome of the actual shoot. I would love to be able to show that to you now, but I am unable to share until it is published later in December.

The last* of the students I am featuring from my Summer mentorship programme is very special to me. I begged, pleaded, cajoled, bribed, arm twisted and finally persuaded my mother +Chris Burridge to sign up to google plus and have a go at learning more about image making alongside me. It made the mentorship even more special to have her by my side on this journey with me. We live so far apart and don't see each other very often and so it's great to have had her virtual companionship. I love her so very much and it's been such a pleasure for me to watch her grow in her photography.

Recently I participated in a Subject Isolation Mentorship programme led by my favourite photographer +Sam Breach. This is part of the +G+ Mentorship Programme for photographers.
Although I wanted to improve my photography, as a complete novice,  I thought I might be out of my depth and was very apprehensive about joining the mentorship.
I need not have worried as Sam, her moderators and all the other group members quickly made me feel comfortable and everyone was so supportive and really helpful with positive advice.
I have learned a lot about  telling a story  using different techniques including colours, textures, depth of field, light and shadows. I have also learned how to use more of my camera functions (this is work in progress!).

In my final (Autumn) Album I hope I have managed to demonstrate some of the techniques I have learned and I would say to anyone who is keen to improve join a mentorship you will learn and have fun.  ___[not my work: this is a reshare]

Falling for the Suave Axe Murderer
This is my Hallowe'en Portrait of +frederic schmidt

This image was created on a recent Fall Expedition to the Eastern Sierra with +Swee Oh +Lisa Co +Larry Nienkark +Todd Draper +Clint Sharp +Tim Gupta +Cynthia Pyun +Mitchell Weinstock +Christopher Bradley +Bob Bowman but sadly without my other male model +Gazzaroonii T.

This image used one speedlite and is the result of an 18-image panoramic stitch and the puffing about of some Baby Powder. Aside from removing a touch of redness and shine from the model's face and removal of pesky chromatic abhorration, the image is otherwise as exactly shot. Zero colour or contrast processing at all.

I promised I would give a wave to all my friends at the #StyleItHalloweenParty  too!

I really loved having +Sharon Stone be a part of my recent mentorship programme, she was an excellent student. I may have pushed her a little beyond her comfort zones from time to time (I wasn't very popular  with anyone the week when the assignment required them to tidy up a room in their house and make it picture perfect, I tell you), but  regardless Sharon and the rest of the crew pushed though, always impressing me with the results they achieved when they knuckled down to attack the task at hand. This is an album of pictures from an Isolation Mentorship that I participated in that was led by the fabulous +Sam Breach!  She challenged us in hopes of teaching us how to tell a story through our pictures.  These photos were taken at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.  I loved the episode of Dr. Who with the weeping angels and I wanted to see if I could find some angels, and find angels I did.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed shooting them!

You should go and check out the different mentorships that are being offered here on G+.  This is my second mentorship and little by little I'm learning.  You also meet some great people while learning along the way.___[not my work: this is a reshare]

The +IsolationMentorshipProgramme  was a great programme to have been in. I learned so much from +Sam Breach. She is very articulate and patient when it comes to teaching you different techniques on how to isolate the subject.I don't think I have met anyone who can explain things in so much detail. This programme definitely takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you want to go photograph different subjects and put to work everything you learn. In my last album I decided to do what I love most about photography and that is to shoot concerts. Big thanks go to the G+Mentorship Program for making all this possible. ___[not my work: this is a reshare]

I first knew +Alan Bland from the amazing work he did for the Chrysta Rae Scavenger Hunts, always so creative and brilliant. If you're not following him already, make sure you do, there is always plenty of variety in his stream, from pumpkin-shaped UFOs shooting pie at the petrified inhabitants of earth, through flying pigs and fairies to human limbs on the BBQ. Yes, he is that wild, weird and wonderful. It was such a pleasure to have him in the mentorship group.

I recently participated in the Subject Isolation Mentorship led by +Sam Breach. This is part of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers program, which is a fantastic method for learning photography with your peers on G+.

After eight intense weeks I picked up a few new tricks and left with a nice collection of photos. The first 5 photos below are my final body of work created during the program, featuring the street entertainers on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder. The mall is alive with musicians, jugglers and other buskers, so I wanted to show what it's like to walk the mall. Other photos in the collection are some of my favorites created during the mentorship, illustrating several of the isolation techniques we learned, such as depth of field, complementary colors, lighting and composition. I hope you enjoy viewing these photos as much as I did making them.

Next time you see a mentorship opportunity pop up in your stream, consider joining the fun. You'll probably meet some new virtual friends and learn some new tricks at the same time!___[not my work: this is a reshare]

I am not sure anyone made me laugh quite as much with their final album for my recent mentorship on the subject of isolation and story-telling than +Alex Bellanger did. He's a funny guy - you really do have to check out this album for the smiles. He's definitely worth following for his hilarious collection of pets and props. What great fodder for images that tell vivid and imaginative stories. Well done all round, Alex.

+G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers +Ron Clifford +Robin Griggs Wood +Tamara Pruessner  +Sam Breach all my G+ friends.  For the past 8 weeks l have been very fortunate to be included in the wonderful  "Isolation Mentorship Program" run by  +Sam Breach
All photographers strive to tell a story encapsulated within their image, Sam's Program specifically honed in on techniques to enhance the subject,  including placement, colour, texture, selective focus, contrast, light and shade,   to name a few.
I was over whelmed by Sam's commitment to the whole group, she worked tirelessly to produce the written detailed assignments each week and constantly gave direction, support and encouragement,  we all grew and improved our photographic knowledge and creativity.
On a personnel note +Alex Lapidus  first opened my eyes on how an image can tell a story and gave me wings to fly/create.   Sam  has taught me several techniques to allow me to open/pour  my heart and soul  into an image.   To direct and hopefully enhance the viewers experience.
I wonted to tell a story in my final assignment,  but also to try to encapsulate and evoke an emotion in the viewer.
Through my counselling work,  personnel experience,  family, friends and just life experienced  by society in general.  it can contain pain, loss, heartache, sorrow, but  must importantly  healing through time.
Without the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  and experienced photographers like +Sam Breach  and +Alex Lapidus
l seriously believe l would have not improved my photography, so if you see a programme offered, apply,  and grab it with both hands.
Here are my final images l created  for the last assignment.  Unfortunately one or two were taken with only my 5mp camera phone so the quality of image  is not to my liking but l love double exposure and blended photography to tell a story , l hope you like what l have produced for you all.
I am sending the biggest thank you to all my  talented fellow mentees and the moderators for your endless support.  Especially

I'm finally getting around to posting the "graduation" album from the incredible +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers with +Sam Breach that I was lucky enough to participate in this past summer/fall. Sam lead us through eight weeks of photographic exercises to help us isolate the subject in our photos and to brainstorm photo story ideas. It was a lovely community and I can't recommend the program enough. It was by far one of the best photography classes I've taken. Check out what they are offering next, I know I am!___[not my work: this is a reshare]

Eight weeks ago, I had the honour of being selected to participate in the Isolation Mentorship Program led by the amazing and talented +Sam Breach and her superb team of moderators.
Thanks to the G+Mentorship Program for Photographers created by +Robin Griggs Wood +Ron Clifford +Tamara Pruessner  for making this all possible.

With an amazing group of photographers we were taken down the learning path of Isolation.   Isolating our subjects to tell our story through our photography.

This was such a great experience and I will be forever thankful to everyone.  With kind comments, gentle critiquing and quiet a few chuckles along the way.
I learned to use the light and shadow, depth of field, colour, size and shape to create the  story that was planned.  Who cares what you look like when you get down on the ground and look up under the skirt of a wooden statue !   I still can't believe I did that.

I would highly recommend the G+Mentorship program.

So here is my final album.
I had the greatest opportunity to photograph my final album in Venice Italy, during the Historic Regatta.   It's a reenactment that takes place once a year and features colourful 16th century Venetian boats with everyone in period costume, parading down the Grand Canal.  It was like stepping back in time. ___[not my work: this is a reshare]

When I was accepting sign-ups for my recent mentorship programme, I was excited to see +Kellianne Hutchinson's name pop up as one of the first applicants. I have always admired Kellianne's work and so I hardly thought she needed to learn anything from me, but I accepted her anyway so I could enjoy some extra time in her company. I did a truly wonderful thing for myself. I took part in the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers Subject Isolation Mentorship Program led by the most awesome and talented +Sam Breach .

One of the best things I have ever done. It wasn't always easy, but it was well worth every effort. Sam and her wonderful cohort of moderators guided us gently along our way through 8 weeks of learning fun.

We learned to move around our subjects, shoot from different angles and/or move the subject itself. We learned about story telling, using colour, contrast, light and shadow to enhance our stories.

We also learned to slow down and pay more attention to what was going on within the frame.

This is one of the best learning experiences I have ever had, and I hope that this album shows that it was well worth it. Besides it was so much fun and I met a bunch of very talented people along the way...

I recommend this program to everyone! Dooo eeeet!___[not my work: this is a reshare]

This album of five photos, a "Body of Work" entitled, Garden of the Gods: Humans Imprint, was shot in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is my final contribution to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  in which I've had the privilege of being a part during the past 8 weeks.  It was an exciting and effective learning experience for me as our group's extraordinary photographer and wonderful mentor, +Sam Breach  led us through a variety of well-presented, informational lessons and challenging assignments designed to teach us, make us think and evaluate, practice and improve our skills, as well as collaborate with our fellow mentees.

This particular mentorship, called "The Isolation Mentorship Programme," was defined by +Sam Breach as a "mentorship to explore methods to help you isolate elements within the scenes and scenarios you are photographing to help create the focal point that will aid the telling of your visual story."  During the 8 weeks we honed our skills as photographers by learning to isolate elements in our photos by working with color, depth of field, light and shadows, and "odd one out."   We also practiced moving ourselves and our subjects to find better looks and angles, as well as focusing our minds on the stories we were trying to convey through our photos.

One great benefit of the program for me was to receive such positive and helpful suggestions and comments from not only +Sam Breach  but also my fellow mentees.  We were all in it together, were experiencing the same things, and we supported each other along they way.  Help was available, too, from the moderators who acted as Sam's assistants, all of them excellent photographers in their own right, and always ready to lend a helping hand if need be.

Thank you, +Sam Breach , for sharing your time and talents so freely to create such a successful learning event!  Your hard work and effort in presenting and facilitating this wonderfully organized +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  is truly appreciated!!___[not my work: this is a reshare]

When +Ken Fowkes told us all he was going to make a study of his pond for his graduation in the Mentorship class I taught over the Summer, I teased him mercilessly about how he should take great care not to slip and fall in the water. I am so glad he didn't because otherwise we might never have got to see this wonderful series he created. Despite the lack of watery accidents, Ken is making a huge splash with these images. They work wonderfully together and I do hope he might be encouraged to print them and display them on a wall somewhere. For the past eight weeks I was lucky to participate in a truly awesome mentorship offered through the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers. In the Isolation Mentorship Programme, run by the talented +Sam Breach and a very helpful team of moderators, my fellow mentees and I had the opportunity to explore ways of making the subject of a photograph as clear as possible.

Over the eight weeks we played with point of view, context, color, texture, focus, light, and shadow. But the most valuable lesson for me, and something Sam seemed to work into each week's lesson, was intentionality. I got familiar with the practice of asking myself, "Why am I making this photograph?" And then to consider all the ways to make that purpose as clear as I can.

This might involve photographic things like light and perspective.
Or it might involve housework like scrubbing and vacuuming.
Or, like my final project, it might involve pruning, pond maintanence, and paying close attention to the weather.

The inspiration for my final album of the mentorship is M. C. Escher's "Three Worlds" lithograph, a poster of which I had hanging in my room as a teen. Each of these photographs of the surface of a pond includes one or more elements from another "world": the water below, the land, or the sky above.___[not my work: this is a reshare]

A while back I got lucky, again. I signed up and got selected for a G+ Mentorship. This one was all about 'isolation of your subject to help the story of your photo', run by the amazing +Sam Breach with a wonderful team of helpers.

Together with my fellow mentees we spent 8 weeks working on weekly assignments, discussing them along the way and in retrospective. In fact the open, positive atmosphere during these mentorships is what keeps me coming back and I sure am hoping I will be able to attend another one in the future. There is so much we can learn from our teachers, but also through the support from our fellow mentees and our own endeavors.

During the whole mentorship my most important lesson was to shoot with intent. Sam asked us more than once to make a list or to at least think about why and how we were going to shoot something. Before actually going out there to shoot. Plays right along 'making a photograph and not taking one', right? Somehow it really struck home with me and I know that from now on every time I am taking a photo at least for a split second I will think about: Why? What is the story?

While I sometimes struggled for time, I always knew I was going to finish this mentorship. Too many people had put their time and efforts into it. How could I not do the same?! Thank you so much for continuing to offer +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers run by +Robin Griggs Wood +Ron Clifford +Tamara Pruessner and I can only hope to be part of it again soon.

p.s. the photos in my album are my chosen pictures representing the progress during these weeks until the final six shots, my body of work.___[not my work: this is a reshare]

One of the people I loved meeting and getting to know better during the recent mentorship programme I led over the Summer, was +Alan Mason who lives far away (from me, at least) in South Africa. He brought a big bag of personality to the group and I enjoyed seeing him experiment and display his artistry in the images he created. In his final album he showed us how he works with textures in his flower shots, an idea which is a common theme in his more recent posts too. Do follow him and check out what he has been up to!

I have just completed a wonderful mentorship programme, The Isolation Mentorship Programme - IMP hosted by +Sam Breach as part of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

Over the past 8 weeks this group of amazingly talented individuals were introduced to many new photographic skills with a view to allowing us to become more creative and precise in our journey.

Of the newly acquired skills we had to tell a story about each of our photos. We learnt about Depth of Field, moving our subject around in order to allow the plan to work. We learnt about colour, isolating our subject and a whole host more.  This means that my photographic Toy Box is really getting extremely large and I just LOVE IT!!

Thank you.___[not my work: this is a reshare]

One of the people I loved meeting and getting to know better during the recent mentorship programme I led over the Summer, was +Alan Mason who lives far away (from me, at least) in South Africa. He brought a big bag of personality to the group and I enjoyed seeing him experiment and display his artistry in the images he created. In his final album he showed us how he works with textures in his flower shots, an idea which is a common theme in his more recent posts too. Do follow him and check out what he has been up to!

Background to these posts: You may have noticed I have been a little quiet over the Summer here on G+. That is because  I was leading a Mentorship in Subject Isolation and 'Story' Telling as part of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  . We have reached the end of the programme and my wonderful students have posted their graduation albums publicly. For their final assignment, I asked each of them to brainstorm and then create a Body of Work. The results are out and I am excited to be able to share them all with you here.

I was totally blown away by +Mike Bingham's final Album for the mentorship programme I led this past Summer. Pretty much all of us know what it is like to try and take pictures at a zoo and how difficult it is to create a set of images that are artistic and compelling. Mike had a genius idea, which was to focus solely on the patterns and textures of the animal skins and it made for a thought-provoking set of images that are calling howling to be framed and hung in a row along a nice white wall somewhere.  Mike takes beautiful pictures, so do make sure he is on your list to follow!

G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers - Subject Isolation

I recently completed the G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers - Subject Isolation. The program explored techniques a photographer can employ to isolate elements in a composition to strengthen the message conveyed.

The Mentorship was a supportive and encouraging environment where I felt comfortable sharing the creative process. Participants had a variety of photographic backgrounds and artistic interests, but all shared the goal of improving their image making through collaborative learning.

Working through weekly assignments we learned the techniques of isolating an element in the frame, changing our point of view, arranging elements in the scene, color and texture, depth of field and selective focus, light and shadow, and the oddball element.

Beyond exploring these techniques, the Mentorship added great value in considering the entire image making process. We had brainstorm sessions, planned an image before setting up to shoot it, made interesting images of mundane settings, revisited an image/location, viewed other people’s images and discussed their approaches, and of course I received constructive feedback on mine.

This album constitutes the final album of the Mentorship. As my subject I chose the animals at the local zoo and my story is the beauty, variety, and functionality of their covering, whether skin, scales, fur, shell, or hide. Using light, shadow, texture, color, and pattern, these images isolate a section of the animal’s exterior. A square crop with a slight vignette adds to the abstract presentation. Intriguing and beautiful, the animal’s behavior and environment can be seen in its skin.

Thank you all for making this Mentorship educational and fun!

A special “Thank You!” to +Sam Breach for being our leader, to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers (Directors +Robin Griggs Wood, +Ron Clifford, and +Tamara Pruessner), and to the Moderators: +Alen Ianni, +Christina Lihani, +Lou McCorkle, +Elizabeth Lund, +Doug Welch, +Craig Szymanski, +Christianna Pierce, +Eric Raeber, +Knut Arne Gjertsen, +Robin Griggs Wood, +Gazzaroonii T. , +Diana Boyd, +Sheila B. I have been so charmed by +Marilou Aballe and her beautiful photography with its lovely colour and sweet sensibilities. She really is a must_follow if you are looking for an injection of warmth and sunshine and beauty in your daily stream. There is something quite magical about her work, as if it comes from another world almost. It should be no surprise that she just launched a theme called Fairy Friday. Check her out, she might just cast a spell on you...

A Hummer's Happy Hour at the Mint Bar
(.....and an invitation to read this post and view each image)

Sharing with you today my Final album representing isolation concepts I’ve learned from the 8 week mentorship program on Subject Isolation and Story Telling led by the most talented and brilliant photographer +Sam Breach,  under the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers .  For this graduation album we had to come up with a Body of Work (series of images with a common theme) and I chose to photograph hummingbirds on flowers. These images were all shot last Sunday Sept. 14, 2014. A bittersweet parting finale as this was also the last week that the hummers are still around before they migrate down south for the winter.  True enough, early this morning the last hummingbird in my neck of the woods may have left as I have not seen a single hummer on any of our feeders today.

I have learned so much from this 8 week mentorship not only about subject isolation techniques (via colors, textures, contrast, depth of field, light and shadows, etc) but also paying attention to details, knowing your subject, planning your shot, envisioning and conveying the story.  I will continue to share assignment shots from concepts I’ve learned in the days to come. This mentorship has also given me a new and better way of looking at things around me and has boosted my confidence to try out new subjects, new perspectives and more importantly new approaches when photographing my favorite subjects as I am by heart a nature photographer. Hopefully over time I will develop a style from the valuable knowledge gained from this mentorship and likewise continue to proactively seek, practice and venture into new subjects.

A wholehearted thanks again +Sam Breach  for your steadfast leadership, inspiration and generosity of your time (as tight and demanding your work schedule is, you still found the time to view, analyze and comment at every image that every student has submitted in this mentorship). Thank you to the support crew of this mentorship for your encouragement and positive words, most especially to +Diana Boyd and +Elizabeth Lund  who have also viewed and commented at every album shared! Diana and Elizabeth you are both amazing super supporters/moderators. Huge thanks to all my fellow mentees whose talents, enthusiasm and peer support has continued to amaze and inspire me each week.  Thank you for the new found friendships that I hope to carry on in this great platform that connects us all. Last but not least thank you to the directors of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  (+Robin Griggs Wood  +Ron Clifford and +Tamara Pruessner ) for continuing to provide valuable access and learning opportunities to photographers here in G+!

I highly recommend this mentorship program to all those interested to further their photography knowledge and experience!

I was so happy when +Pat Kight signed up for my recent Mentorship Class on the subject of Subject Isolation and Storytelling. Why so happy? Well, because Pat has long been one of my favourite people on G+. I happen to have taken a shine to her and she's got purple hair! What's not to love? I am not sure there is anything I can really teach her, she seems like the fountain of all wisdom to me! If you aren't following her already, you must!

Over the past 8 weeks, I have had the pleasure of participating in the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers .  I applied for and was chosen to be a part of the Isolation Mentorship Programme which was hosted/taught by +Sam Breach.    To be honest, when I first read the invitation to apply, I was not quite sure of how the term 'Isolation' should be interpreted.  But after viewing Sam's work, it was a no brainer... 'yes' I wanted to be a part of it.  I am fairly new at photography and quite immersed in teaching myself through various avenues.  The lessons learned over the last 8 weeks shall assist me forever more.  This cannot be overstated.  What have I learned?  Mostly it is how to use photography to tell stories.  Instead of taking photos randomly, I now put some more thought into 'what story do I want to tell'.  I also learned that conveying stories in photographs can be challenging but if we learn how to isolate our subject, the act of storytelling becomes somewhat easier for us and for the viewer to interpret what our intentions are.   There are many strategies we employed to isolate our subjects.  We manipulated our environments, used shallow depth of field, used contrasting shadows and light, used selective colouring and complementary colours.  We used 'odd one out' techniques and brainstormed our own unique ways of using isolation as a technique for our storytelling through photography.

All of this was done in a positive environment of continuous encouragement from Sam, her many moderators/assistants and from the participants themselves.  I am truly fortunate to have been chosen to participate.  My outlook and approach to photography shall forever be altered.

+Sam Breach, thank you again for taking me along on this journey.  I look forward to a continued friendship with you and all that participated.  I also encourage others to engage with this mentorship program as the opportunities arise.

If anyone has any specific questions about my experience, please don't hesitate to contact me.  I would be happy to relate my experiences to you in more detail.

I attach my final story for our mentorship.  This story is about the changing routines and landscapes that come with the transition to September (in my part of the world).

Thanks everyone.

I went out of my comfort zone for this one!

For the last eight weeks, I have been involved in the #isolationmentorship  with the creative +Sam Breach  and a wonderful group fellow mentors and mentees.
Sam gave us assignments each week, involving, storytelling, light & shadows, colors, textures, depth of field, she even convinced us that we need to really move our feet and bodies to get that perfect angle. Along with other techniques.
I truly enjoyed this adventure for the past 8 weeks.
I was scared, challenged and even went beyond my comfort zone for this final piece of work!
When we were given the final assignment , brainstorming had to be done...then I remembered a conversation between Cassie and I a few weeks back....
I have never, nor had the thought ever, crossed my mind to attempt this type of shoot!
Until this assignment!

Hello Cassie!
I am fortunate enough to have a beautiful friend, who really wanted to try a Boudoir/Burlesque Shoot.:D Due to budget and timeframe we went boudoir!

Looking forward to more photography shoots in the future, featuring Cassie.

For the last 8 weeks I have been part of a fantastic Mentor-ship program under the auspices of the ever creative, ever adorable - and excellent guide, +Sam Breach     The theme of our study was "isolation and storytelling"  --    I am not sure if this little folio really showcases all we learned, but I worked hard to incorporate lessons learned in this final folio.   (and its release just happens to coincide with +FloralFriday  #floralfriday   !   Should you ever have opportunity to be part of such a Mentorship, I would make a B-line.  (and if you are not following Sam, well you are missing the best of inspiration.)___[not my work: this is a reshare]

To find out more about the free Mentorship Programmes on offer, please add  +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers   to your circles as well as the founders  +Robin Griggs Wood  +Ron Clifford        and   +Tamara Pruessner   who will make announcements about any future courses. Thank you.
