WISHLIST

Things I would like future novels (with female protagonists) to throw at my eyeballs:

-- A plot that does not put a major focus on the protagonist's romantic relationship or lack thereof. Like, I want it to be an afterthought. This means no love triangles for drama.
-- If we do the falling in love thing I want to see something more lgbt friendly. Maybe a couple of bi girls get together. Or maybe one of them is trans. Surprise me. But please don't make it A Big Deal.
-- Protagonist has an important guy friend help her get through most of the story and they have no interest in each other beyond that friendship. At all. During any point of the story. Not even hints. No one regrets this or thinks it's weird.
-- Protagonist has a healthy relationship with her family, they are all alive, and they support her life choices.

KINK

Sticking this under NSFW because a lot of you probably don't want to open this at your place of employment based on the nature of the questions. But 'lo, a survey!

Kinksters! The Alternative Sexualities Health Research Alliance (TASHRA), a San Francisco non-profit research organization, has launched the first ever national survey to examine the impact of kink sexuality on health and healthcare usage.

Individuals who engage in sexual practices that are considered unconventional -- such as BDSM -- have been largely ignored by healthcare providers and clinical researchers. TASHRA’s research seeks to explore the interaction between kink and health, and specifically to describe the physical and mental health of the kink population, their use of healthcare, and their experiences engaging with the healthcare system.

Between 2013 and 2015, TASHRA did a pilot study (the manuscript is in review), in the Bay Area, which concluded that patients have healthcare needs relating to their kink practices and identities, and that they wish to come out to their clinicians about their kink sexuality. However, only 38 percent of those surveyed were out to their current primary care clinician, with most citing fear of stigma as the reason for non-disclosure.

This new survey would expand the window provided by the pilot study so that we can better quantify the impact of kink on both physical and mental health, and examine nation-wide issues of healthcare access, specifically as they relate to the experience of healthcare-related stigma.

If you're a kinkster in the U.S. over the age of 18, please consider participating:  http://tinyurl.com/kinkhealth

More information:

TASHRA is a community-based organization whose mission is to improve the physical and mental health of people who engage in BDSM, kink and sexual fetishism. This is achieved by conducting community-based research, educating healthcare professionals and patients, and by fostering the development of kink-friendly healthcare services.

TASHRA was started in 2012 by Jess Waldura, MD, Richard Sprott, PhD, and Anna Randal, MPH MSW. Jess Waldura, MD, is a family physician, HIV provider, and researcher at UCSF. Richard Sprott, PhD, is a developmental psychologist and director of the Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS). Anna Randall, MPH MSW, is a clinical sexologist and researcher in private practice. TASHRA is guided and supported by a Community Advisory Board consisting of 16 kink-identified community members.

PIKACHU

I've discovered that if you go hunting for Pokemon after bed time there's more Pokemon to be had simply because less people are awake to grab them. Woo!

Similarly, weekend daytime is THE WORST for hunting, at least in neighborhoods and the like. Servers are slower and too many people are out catching all of my Pokemon.

But I got this one, bitches.

Side note: I have hooked the boys on the Pokemon cartoon (they lumped all the beginning episodes under "indigo league" on Netflix) and I started the 6 year old on the gameboy color. ehehehe. So far he doesn't quite get that you're supposed to level the Pokemon. He literally just wants to catch them all. It's hilarious.

GHOSTBUSTERS

I haven't seen it yet and was already really excited. Now I'm EVEN MORE excited.

I'm gonna gush about Ghostbusters and I'll try to avoid spoilers, but will discuss themes of the film. This is a no-trashing thread. I don't care if you didn't like the movie, and I am going to enjoy liking it for a while before I deal with negative stuff about it. Like, just don't, okay?

First off: I straight up loved this movie. I enjoyed it so much that I cried starting in the last ten minutes and didn't stop until after the credits. That's how much I liked it. So be forewarned.

I really enjoyed a lot of things about the movie: the effects were pretty good, the dialogue was pretty snappy in general, I laughed a lot (and yes, a lot of it is "low brow" humor, but whatever), and it was fun overall. There were a couple things that really stood out for me.

- I have never seen a movie with geeky, intelligent, conventionally attractive and "not conventionally attractive," dorky women of so many different body types and personalities. I haven't. Maybe I'm missing something? But this movie has geeky women - about different things! Tech! Ghosts! History! - being both effective and able to fail, being dorky (oh, gosh, sometimes so awkward), being feminine AND somewhat masculine AND disregarding both, being straight and awkward about it, being very obviously queer (no, the lines stating that one of the characters is gay aren't in the movie, but it's demonstrated well in the film without interfering with the plot in a non-romance film, which I thought was great!), being kind of ambivalent in sexual context (possibly asexual!), being strong physically, being weak physically, being book smart, being street smart, being academic, being working class - they were REAL. HUMAN. WOMEN. I can't say that enough. I can't.

- This movie was a movie about women and about women's friendships. There were a couple of different friendships represented - one was a long-term teenage friendship with a falling out, one was a working relationship that was also a really strong friendship, one was a newer friendship that was very quickly a "I'd die for you!" friendship, and there were other arrangements within that. It was amazing and beautiful. I never saw Bridesmaids (not so much my crowd), and while I enjoyed Heat, it was a much simpler film in regards to relationships. This film had some conflict, but it wasn't that awful entertainment-ruining conflict for me, and it made the characters seem real, and seeing women's friendships in a non-"women's film" context was really cool.

- The women were unapologetically dorky and geeky. (ETA: This originally said apologetically because tired & John said I was saying they were just like me.) You know those like, "holy shit cool tech technobabble" moments that like, every sci fi film or show has, where everyone crowds around a table to look at stuff? THIS. HAD. THAT. BUT. IT. WAS. WOMEN. and I just couldn't stop squeeing and being so freaking excited. And like, the women used jargon and confused people with their intelligence and knew things other people didn't know and were silly but still were SMART and GOOD AT THEIR JOBS and SHOWED ENTHUSIASM and FUCK YES.

- The villain was holy-shit appropriate. I won't go into details here, but HOLY CRAP APPROPRIATE. They were just so perfect for the context of the film internally and externally, and it really just felt so right. A+ on the film writers and creators. Just, yes.

- Men were secondary. I love men, I really do. But men have a lot of their own films! A LOT. So I was like, oh, we'll have more men heroes. But holy hell, the men came out on the rough end here. Men were shown for the superficial issues we often see, but some of the toxic parts of masculinity and men's behavior was highlighted, too. That was really cool to me, because it felt like a reversal of the norm. And even though the guys were kind of idiots, the women didn't treat them like shit the whole time. They may not have respected them and been frustrated with them, but they didn't dehumanize them. Which, you know, was kind of a deviation from that reversal.

- Callbacks were cool, but weren't needed. The film had a number of callbacks to the original films, which were great! I've seen the originals, but I'm not a huge fan. The callbacks were cute, and I recognized them, but they also served a GREAT role in explaining why this movie was good, approved by its predecessors, and how the movie didn't really need validation at all because it was just a fucking good movie.

- I felt like I was a part of it. Ghostbusters was such a boy's club when I was growing up. I watched the films young, and even then I had issues with the content and was pretty bleh about it. I mean, I saw them before I was 10 and the main characters were like, 40 year old sexist men. Like... not my thing. But this? This movie was made for people like me. Not to the exclusion of others, no, but it made me feel so welcome. Finally, something I had grown up alienated from was for me and I could know that.

- There are some moments that made my heart swell. There were plenty of silly things, plenty of goofy things, laughs, groans, cheering for cool action bits (Seriously, Holtzmann's scene near the end HOLY SHIT)... but there were a few lines that were about like, friendship, and acceptance, and it was so good.

I really loved it. I will probably see it again in the theater, & I'm definitely buying it when it's out. I won't "recommend" because I know there will always be people who come back complaining that I didn't warn them it was "stupid" or "immature" because it had some toilet humor (cuz it's okay if Puck does it but not a woman) or because it had slapstick or something. I can't get hung up on that right now, so I'm just gonna say: I loved it, it made me happy, it made me feel welcome and included, and it made me laugh so hard I cried. ___GHOSTBUSTERS

Excellent photos this year!

ESPN's 2016 "Body Issue" is out, and with it, another exceptional collection of photography. As every year, they've photographed a variety of athletes from a variety of sports, male and female, as nudes; as every year, the images seem to show the range of forms the human body can take when it is pushed to extremes of grace and ability; and as every year, it is very much worth a look.

The primary link is at http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/body/espn-magazine-body-issue , with just photos at http://espn.go.com/espn/photos/gallery/_/id/16797886/image/1/bodies-want-2016-bodies-want-2016 . I'm not even black and this shit is getting old.

If you've heard Jessie Williams speech and think it was racist, or anti-police, or the BET Awards are black only, or have an issue with BET as a network existing when there's no "white TV," I think you need to do a little reading and research.

The fact that there's even a petition means that, clearly, there is a large segment of people who have no clue what Jessie actually said. I'll briefly parse a couple items.

The things he said about police de-escalation were factual. I work in news and see the differences on a regular basis. The most frustrating example is two women argue over a parking spot on an elementary school campus. White woman calls police. Police show up, talk to white woman, don't ask her for ID, barely question her, she tells her side of the story and policeman literally tells her there's nothing he can do, no arrestable offense. Officer goes and finds the pregnant black woman, asks her for ID, questions her, she says she's done nothing wrong and since she's not being arrested is going to go about her way. Officer ends up threatening to arrest her and eventually throws pregnant woman to the ground. Here's the full video: http://heavy.com/news/2015/05/charlena-cooks-pregnant-woman-thrown-to-ground-by-police-cops-officers-barstow-california-resisting-arrest-video-body-cam/

Here's the issue, higher ups stood by the officers saying that the pregnant woman was resisting arrest... but there was no arrestable offense. The officer himself said as much to the white woman. And, watch the whole video, clearly there was different treatment between the two women.

The BET AWards are not black only. Quite a few people have won awards, or been honored who are not black. A simple, quick Google search would show those complaining about that. It's laughable though that this is even a complaint. For those who don't know the history, MTV didn't think white people wanted to hear black music in its early days, so black artists got little to no exposure. So, instead of bitching and boycotting, we created our own. Can't have it both ways people! We boycott and march or protest and people complain, we create our own and people complain. I can't even... (Oh, to whit: CMT, Country Music Awards, TNN, TV Executives, Film Executives... there are plenty of "white only" networks, etc. This is getting silly)

His speech called out the very black people in the room for their own lack of action in helping solve the problems he was talking about. IT WASN'T ALL ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE OR POLICE. Did you get that? Let me say it again... HE CALLED OUT BLACK PEOPLE FOR THEIR PART IN THE PROBLEM. I have yet to see someone who is complaining about that speech actually recognize that. This is why I think some people just don't get it, or really just want to complain with their faux internet rage.

Ok, I'm done for now.___I'm not even black and this shit is getting old.

JUST ONE BOOK

Hey folks! Do you remember Greenville High School? The place with the librarian who made the appeal to folks asking you to please send #JustOneBook  ?

Well.... here's an update for ya: https://throwingchanclas.com/2016/06/15/just-one-book-updates-and-observations/

I know a whole lot of folks boosted the signal then, and a lot of folks sent books as well, either from our personal collections or from the library's wishlist. This is so great! It makes me happy in my <3.

If you want to be part of helping out this excellent library, they are updating their Amazon Wishlist here http://amzn.to/29mcUop with their new needs as they figure them out. If you want to send them something gently used, here's the address

Library Project/Margaret Garcia
PO Box 585
Greenville, CA 95947

She does ask that folks just send ONE book and not a huge boxful, because they are having trouble sorting through that size of influx - although there has been the added bonuses of not only have they been able to build class sets of particular books, but a lot of duplicates/overflow are going to similarly in-need schools and libraries nearby!___JUST ONE BOOK

Good read here.

Nobody gets fixed. There isn’t really a “happy ending,” but that’s a good thing. It’s very easy to read all of this and say “Oh god, these poor boys, these cinnamon rolls too good for this world,” but as someone who does suffer from anxiety disorder and panic disorder, the fandom’s tendency to turn Bucky, Steve, and Tony into woobies is something I find extremely disturbing. These aren’t sickly sweet characters, inviting us to fantasize about fixing them. To do that diminishes the reality that so many people who have suffered from bodily and mental violation, PTSD, and other assorted traumas face; traumas are incredibly hard to reach and figure out, despite what Steve wants from Bucky and what Tony wants from his own abilities, and a snap of the fingers or a new suit or a fleet of Ultrons can’t fix what these men have been through.

The main point of that storyline at its logical conclusion in Civil War is that Steve cannot rescue Bucky, and Pepper can’t rescue Tony. It’s frightening to assume that everyone can just be “loved out of” a traumatic response, no matter how much one would want to do so. The most Bucky and Steve and Tony can do, at least in the information we get from these movies, is attempt to navigate their traumatic responses, figure out a way to make them less of a presence in their daily lives, and try to go on living as fully as they can in their present circumstances. They cannot forget their traumas, but they can learn how to live with them. It’s only then that their relationships with each other, the Avengers, their employers, and ultimately themselves will heal. And that is a message from which we can all benefit: even if you’ve been hurt, or you’re in pain, life can go on.___Good read here.

TAVERN PUZZLES

Does anyone else remember these frustratingly amazing things? Thinking I'm going to get some for our nephew. He's about the right age and needs a challenge.

Anyone have a favorite? Search "tavern puzzles" and link me your most loved/hated.

HIGH INTENSITY CARDIO

Turns out that 3 sessions a week of 10 minute high intensity cardio training is enough to get your heart healthy. I'm down with that. Sounds better than trying to fit another 30 minutes of cardio in per day along with workouts.

Anyone have a stationary bike I can borrow? :)

MEAL/FITNESS APPS

So I initially sought out apps that would produce meal recommendations and grocery lists, but a lot of them are also fitness apps so here I am.

Anyway, this is the very first one I loaded (I'm trying a lot of them before I make a final decision) and I'm already impressed that it hasn't said my goal weight is 130-140. The goal weight here is realistic.

Madness. I hope the rest trend this way. If not, it'll be a quick weed out.

DEPRESSION AND EXERCISE

This article is the best.

#NamasteBitchez

I shared this on FB last night, but this really deserved to be shared on a larger scale. And, well, despite what some folks say, y'all are my broader audience. ;)

I love this article for a number of reasons, not the least of which is because it's honest. Depression is hand in hand with my PTSD, and oh sweet mother do I know these feels.

The big takeaway here is: do what you can, when you can, as you feel you can. Pay attention to your body.

Which has always and forever been my mantra, over and over again. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

How do you cope when you're feeling too depressed to exercise?___DEPRESSION AND EXERCISE

SUPREME COURT

Just read.

I'm not really that into "political stats" so I can't speak on motivations, or how Sotomayor has sided on previous issues, but her dissenting opinion on this matter is a MUST READ.

You need to know that the Supreme Court just upheld police officers' ability to make an unlawful stop, then have anything illegal found after the stop be admissible in court. THAT is not the problem with that, per se beyond its flying in the face of the Constitution it's what it enables. Minority Report without the precogs. To erase any ethnic bias you may or may not have, this court decision is based on the case of an illegal stop of a white male.

Sotomayor: "It implies that you are not a citizen of a democracy but the subject of a carceral state, just waiting to be cataloged. We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are "isolated."___SUPREME COURT

SCIENCE IS AWESOME

And so is male birth control!

Developed by U.S.based not-for-profit company, the Parsemus Foundation, Vasalgel works by blocking the tube that sperm travels the vas deferens - with a flexible, spongy, hydrogel material. That means all the important fluids can still get through, but larger objects, like sperm, can't, preventing pregnancy.

Injecting Vasalgel into the vas deferens is quick and fairly trivial, and the latest animal trials suggest that the contraceptive is longer-lasting than the developers had been expecting.

In the latest trial, 12 male rabbits were given a single injection of Vasalgel in varying doses. Eleven of the rabbits were found to be 'azoospermic' straight away, which means there were no traces of sperm in their ejaculate, and the other only had small amounts of sperm detected before also becoming azoospermic.

All 12 rabbits were unable to impregnate females throughout the year-long trial, and there were no signs of their bodies having any kind of abnormal response, the researchers report in Basic and Clinical Andrology.

Seven of the rabbits then had the Vasalgel flushed from their vas deferens, and sperm quickly returned to normal.

These results are exciting, and in addition to successful trials in baboons in 2014, have prompted the Parsemus Foundation to pursue human trials some time in 2016. With all going to plan, the product could be on the market within two years -- and while it won't protect against sexually transmitted infections, it gives couples much-needed new options when it comes to birth control.
