NASA2,512,106Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008326

Jessica Northey1,848,118Join @115263347034954886450  Wednesday October 24th starting 5pm PT! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=eDGGFu-Ok9w We'll be talking about Americana and folk music with @115355394914388821672, @101855386466968203040, @102002299339025067376, @107291158434082397409 as well as @111956683258824284439  We'll talk about what Americana music is and some performances showing difference styles! A few weeks ago, I wrote about the never-ending debate about the definition of Country Music. As tough as that is, it’s nothing compared to how one defines the term “Americana.”  In writing about this topic, I’m going to be (gasp!) honest about my thoughts – as they were when you first started hearing the term to describe a musical genre. There were several artists who had been favorites of the Country genre who no longer found themselves played on mainstream radio. Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris were two examples of this. Crowell had a string of top tens from 1988-1992, but all of a sudden his name disappeared from radio playlists. The same happened to Emmylou Harris following her 1988 top ten “Heartbreak Hill.” Critics of the musical format said it was that Country Music had changed – and gotten more pop and rock influenced. That is true – but, only halfway. If you listen to some of Harris’s post 1992 work, as well as Crowell’s, you’ll find some different sounds and subject matter that they weren’t doing earlier. That’s not saying they weren’t doing great music – but it WAS different than their own music that was played on top-40 Country radio just a few years earlier. So, (at least in my mind), that’s how the Americana format was born– as a place for acts who weren’t getting the commercial reception that they once had. Ok, I know I just offended several of my friends with that – but that’s my opinion. I never said that the music was bad, just different. Twenty years later, the definition of Americana is not that simple in my mind. One of the best albums of late in the format is Radney Foster’s current album, DEL RIO, TEXAS REVISITED: UNPLUGGED AND LONESOME , is a stunning re-take on his classic 1992 album DEL RIO, TEXAS 1959. The songs are the same that were radio hits back in the early 1990s. They were Country then, what changed? When artists like Patty Loveless release new projects, they get a warmer reception in the Americana format than Country – and this is by an artist that is a former CMA Female Vocalist of the Year. Granted, she wasn’t cutting Bluegrass music back in 1988 as her last album was, but the voice is still as pure and stunning as ever. But, Americana reaches far beyond the Country format. There’s tinges of Blues, Rock, Gospel, and Bluegrass that are sprinkled throughout. So, is Americana “anything outside of the mainstream?” I don’t know. The Civil Wars, a critical favorite, recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe and Sound.” What do you call that?  Part of my continuing education concerning “Americana” Americana & Folk Music Twangout with Twang Nation's Baron Lane, Joe Whyte, Heather Fay and Ryan Van Sickle.2012-10-25 02:00:0046

As Far As I Can Tell, I'm Now a Silver Wolf, or Possibly a Polar Bear

I pulled off the road today and took a rare selfie. It's my biker shot. ha! In the Gay Community, there are all sorts of labels for body types and for people based on body hair and size. Otters, wolves, cubs, bears, chubs, pups, bulls, twinks ... I understand these labels, but here's my real question:

Whether you're a straight woman or man, or a LGBTQ man or woman, do I keep the gray, or fight it with science a kit from the store?

Here's the thing: Blaine has a fantastic salt and pepper look, whereas I have been getting the full-on Sean Connery look for some time now. But I hate it! I've never liked shaving, so that's out of the question, but I also don't like looking 25 years older than I am.

Boob jobs, tummy tucks, Botox -s... more »

I Think Too Much...

Ya, That's me. Always thinking ... ahead, or behind. For twenty years, if I get more than 4 or 5 hours sleep, my brain wakes me up.

Instantly, and every time. My brain is a driven mofo, and right out of Central Casting. My brain, or to be more precise, my subconscious, fights me. Endlessly.

Anyone else experience this?

True Music Lovers Get This

Look, if you're a casual music fan, or occasional listener, this pic probably won't make sense to you. But true music fans? The die-hard ones? When we listen to music, we have other-worldly responses, and out-of-body experiences, and nights that feel as if we have our own personal shaman with us.

Music takes us to new places; it takes us to castles and islands; it takes us through trips in time and back to good days. It takes us to the closest thing to nirvana that we know.

Music, for true fans, embraces us, and engulfs us, and never lets go. Music, on any level, and in any language, speaks to our soul and grabs our heart like a gentle cardiac surgeon. Music lifts us up, and never stops caressing us....

The Walking Dead Lego Winnebago

I admit it, this is supreme coolness for LEGO™ fans, and I'll give it two thumbs up high for execution. That being said, I'm a boring traditionalist when it comes to Lego bricks.

I like my ol' boring original shapes (you know, the ones that cause all that agony when you step on them by accident - who can forget that pain?). All these modern touches and shapes kinda rub me the wrong way.

That's just me. If you like the modern updates and interpretations, squeee and wheee and enjoy it!

Manly Men & Womanly Women (am I saying that right?)

Here's the thing: when you think of all the badass men and women on screen .. men like Steve McQueen and women like Katharine Hepburn, or more recently, men like Chris Hemsworth or women like Emma Stone or Jennifer Lawrence -- who comes to mind for you?

Which legendary, or more recent actors do you think of when you think of manly men and womanly women? Who will be the Steve McQueen's and the Hepburn's of tomorrow?

The Great Escape (1963). Steve McQueen. His picture should be next to the definition of Cool!

Scary, right? So clean cut, no gray hairs in that stash or beard. So damned innocent. I had to get this issued in Prague and it was notarized by the Consul General. But later, I found out my supposed lost passport wasn't. A cluster%^$k, Anyway, this is me, circa 19 years ago..

Brought this up since I have to get a new one to visit +byron rempel @ Horror-Rama in Toronto, Canada, in October. The picture now will look vastly different._ ha!

Jan Huling: Stunningly Detailed Bead Work

Incredible work involved, and so much patience to do intricate, complex art like this. Well done, Jan!

Artist Statement

In a recent review, the New York Times dubbed my work “oddball assemblages,” and aptly so. My three-dimensional collages combine found objects with surface design, sometimes touching on narrative themes. I’m also drawn to religious and political icons, inspired by a continuing fascination with indigenous or popular culture and world religions. By juxtaposing these icons with an eclectic assortment of objects, the viewer is challenged to consider common images within an altered context.

By juxtaposing these icons with an eclectic assortment of objects, the viewer is challenged to consider common images within an altered context.

In each of my constructions, surface design is the key component. Czech seed beads adorn objects in colorful patterns, camouflaging their original circumstance, allowing us to see them as pure form without their usual connotations. The process is slow and meticulous, zen-like, with the choice of forms motivating color schemes and iconography.

Certain themes continue to resonate for me. The dolls I frequently include in my constructions explore dreams of childhood while removing them from the realm of cherished playthings. For me, musical instruments represent the lyrical joy that music imparts to our lives and hearkens back to youthful dreams of virtuosity. Birds, in their quicksilver beauty, represent ultimate freedom.

I’m also now working on two-dimensional pieces, using tiny colored paper dots to embellish found images such as postcards. My goal in covering the surfaces of sculptural objects or flat images, is to transform the mundane and allow us to imagine the magic within the familiar

Joe Walsh: So What

Here's a little classic rock gem for you all, especially fans of The Eagles. Enjoy!

"So What" is the third solo studio album by the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Walsh. It was released in late 1974 on ABC-Dunhill Records.

It contains hard rock songs such as "Welcome To The Club" and a remake of the Barnstorm track, "Turn To Stone". It also contains more introspective material such as "Help Me Through the Night" and "Song For Emma", a tribute to Walsh's daughter who had been killed in a car accident the previous year.

On a few tracks, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Randy Meisner of the Eagles contributed backing vocals. Over a year and a half later, Walsh would be drafted into the Eagles to replace founding member Bernie Leadon, playing on their... more »

Over a year and a half later, Walsh would be drafted into the Eagles to replace founding member Bernie Leadon, playing on their best-selling studio album "Hotel California". The album was re-issued five years later by MCA Records in 1979.

Two months before the release of the album, Walsh was asked about the album, and he said "I know this album's going to be an important one for me, but it's not easy to just crank them out anymore, I've got, what, six or seven albums out. I don't want the next album to sound like a bunch of outtakes from [The] Smoker [You Drink, the Player You Get].

I want it to be the difference between [ The Beatles albums] Revolver and Sgt. Pepper['s Lonely Hearts Club Band]. I've held back [the album's release] until that development was there, even though the record company's been screaming for it. I want it to be a big, big step… in thoughts, vocals, playing and maturity."

What do you think the HOT COSTUMES of Halloween 2015 will be?

Make your predictions now, and prove us all wrong soon!

Canada, We'll See You Soon at Horror-Rama!

It was inevitable, that we would finally get to meet +byron rempel and his family in person. Considering he was one of the first people I ever met and totally enjoyed on G+. Well, it will be for real very soon!

In October, Byron is going to have a booth at HORROR-RAMA in Toronto, Canada, and +Blaine Hall and I will be hanging out with him and +N. M. Scuri at that show! We're bringing our enthusiasm and excitement for what he does right there to his booth, and as I've always been one of his biggest supporters, this is going to FU&%ng rock!

We're getting passports shortly, and making all plans now. Can't wait to see my best buddy on G+, along with Monica and the kids!!

HORROR-RAMA, the two day fan event that celebrated its inaugural year last October 2014 in Toronto to great acclaim, returns again…bigger, bloodier and weirder than ever! Founded in 2014, HORROR-RAMA is Toronto’s only all-horror convention!

The show, the brainchild of SUSPECT VIDEO owner Luis Ceriz and FANGORIA/GOREZONE editor Chris Alexander, will run for two days – October 17th and 18th – in Toronto at the elegant Hyatt Regency Hotel, located right in the heart of downtown Toronto beside film culture hub TIFF Bell Lightbox.

One of the best things ever. Every day, I fall more in love with how cool Dave Grohl is (and the Foo Fighters) and this.is.awesome!

By the way, this f%&$in group only has 40 members, but they always get press. If any group needs to burn in hell for eternity (picketing military funerals? Go to hell!) it is these people. I rarely get militant on G+ (as in almost never) but these haters hold a special place in my hardened heart...

Nice job, +Paul Spoerry. h/t all the way to you, and +Blaine Hall needs to see this as well!

Foo Fighters Rick Roll Westboro protestors
So Westboro Baptist decided to protest a Foo Fighters show in Kansas City.... Clearly they did not know who they were fucking with. The band rolled up on the protestors in a truck with a giant bear of a man rocking a Speedo and then blasted the now infamous Rick Astley song 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

That's how you rock.

Question: What is one of the coolest bars/nightclubs/coffee joints you've been to? Anywhere in the world. It can be a single place, or a list, and stories add flavor!

For me, I have a few. Club Can't Tell, in Sacramento, was an old theater that had live shows with bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and all the 80s greats. And below that, there was a subterranean bar right out of the movies. Loved a few joints in Dingle, Ireland. Was at the closing night for a cop bar in the Mission in San Francisco, where they literally gave us the paintings off the wall.

So, what are your favorites, and let's hear the stories about why they were or are so great!

Star Wars & The Hero's Journey

Mythology has always been a crucial part of the Star Wars universe, and I was glad I had the chance to study mythology early on at my private school, growing up. Thanks, Parents!

George Lucas based Star Wars on Joseph Campbell's comparative work on the parallels among the heroes/mystics/teachers/founders of the major world religions and world mythologies. This is a diagram of those parallels as presented in his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." A more readable version can be found in Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey" -- a text for screenwriters.

Lamborghini Egoista Channels The Modern Fighter Jet

The Lamborghini Egoista is a concept car unveiled by Lamborghini for the company's 50th anniversary in 2013. The fully functioning model is based on the Gallardo. It features a 5.2 L (317 cu in) V10 engine producing 600 hp (447 kW; 608 PS).

The Egoista has a unique one-seat cockpit, which is similar to that of a modern fighter jet, and has a canopy door that is completely removable. The steering wheel must be removed to enter and exit the vehicle.

The bodywork consists of active aerodynamic panels that raise and lower for optimum downforce and stability. The body and wheels are made of antiradar material to even more identify with jet fighters.

In Italian (as well as Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, and Romanian), Egoista literally means "selfish". According to the model's designer Walter de Silva, the Egoista "represents hedonism taken to the extreme."

The car is now on display at the Lamborghini museum located in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

Neon Jack

With neon, it's sometimes funny how you can see a whole story with minimal lines. This is a prime example.

As a storyteller, I see an explorer with a pipe, or maybe a sailor, or even Jack London. It could be a dock worker, or a Scottish poet, or anyone really. That's the beauty of the imagination - it can be whatever you want it to be. It's your eyes taking the picture and filling in the story.

Happy Birthday, Blaine!

This is a very happy birthday message to my +Blaine Hall, my partner of 9+ years. He's 30 today on the 19th of August (cough, choke), and this is a My Little Pony shot for him. hehe.

I hope you'll all help me embarrass him a great deal today, since he knows how bitchy he can be, but never when I celebrate him on his b-day. Thought we'd be married by now (cough, hopefully soon) but we're common law for many years now, so it is what it is. Wish him the best, but be sure to use this hashtag #BitchBlainesBirthday  to really rub it in. ha!

Don't Stop The Music, Ever

Great work on DeviantArt. Says it all! The music is what keeps us going, and inspired.

Music elevates us, and raises our spirits. It makes us happy when we're sad, and sad when we need it. Music is the one, true, universal language that binds our world together. In an instant, music can transport you through space and time. Music is, in a word, life.

Danielle Goltare (Dani) Passed Away Today, Far Too Young.

Dani was the daughter of my bosses, and she has been in so much pain from her cancer. A friend of the family, a photographer, took this amazing shot of her last weekend. She is no longer in pain; she is with the angels, and she leaves behind a 2 yr old daughter. Such great loss for this family I love.

To say work is hard at the moment is a vast understatement, but now, finally, Dani can rest in peace. I feel the pain Kerri and Steve are now, and have been, going through, I do. No parent should ever have to bury their child.

Hug your loved ones; tell those you love every single day how much they mean to you. Every day! You never know when your last minute will be on this planet. Goodbye, Dani!

BIZARRO: A Dinosaur Walks Into A Bar...

Bizarro is a single-panel cartoon written and drawn by cartoonist Dan Piraro. Launched January 22, 1985, the panel appears daily in 350 markets throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Comics critic Tom Heintjes described Bizarro's themes, cryptic aspects and expansion into performance art:

Piraro has taken his panel in directions simultaneously surreal and topical. In a comic universe where world-weary talking dogs exist alongside nihilistic housewives, Piraro gives his cartoons heft by skewering his own bêtes noires: wasteful consumerism, environmental destruction, corporate greed and sheeplike people, to name a few. Though his humor is never didactic, Piraro's work is remarkable in its unwillingness to pander, even when the occasional panel borders on the inscrutable. (For example, he once used the Etruscans as a punchline; if you skipped history class that day, tough.) The 54-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, native has also begun participating in the nascent vaudeville revival with his one-man Bizarro Bologna Show, an entertainment potpourri into which he incorporates puppetry, song, ventriloquism, mind reading and drawing (not to mention slides of Bizarro cartoons too blue for newspaper publication).

Creatively restive, Piraro also produces fine art, some of which uses the Catholic imagery that he was exposed to at parochial school.

Suiciders Comic

Stumbled upon this by accident over at a Fort Wayne comic store and am getting into it. You can still catch early issues, as it's new...

If you’re a DC Comics fan, you know Lee Bermejo. He’s the artist behind two of the most seminal super-villain tales ever to see print—2008’s JOKER and 2010’s LUTHOR, both written by his frequent collaborator, Brian Azzarello. He also brought Watchmen’s masked and trench-coated vigilante back to the comic page in BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH, and mashed up Dickens with the Dark Knight in BATMAN: NOEL. Known for his hyper-realistic art style and cinematic storytelling, he’s one of the most dynamic creators currently working in comics. And he has a new series that we suspect you’ll want to check out.

However, as this is “Vertigo for the DC Fan,” it’s not a DC Comics series. It’s from Vertigo and is conceived, written and drawn entirely by Bermejo (with colors by Matt Hollingsworth). It’s called SUICIDERS and the very first issue is in stores now.

Here’s the basic idea. After the West Coast is devastated by a massive earthquake, Los Angeles is left in ruins, riddled by crime and left isolated by the United States government (which all but writes the city off). So in order to survive, L.A. does what it does best: It turned that very survival into entertainment.

Now, thirty years later, the city of New Angeles is thriving once more thanks to Suiciders—a TV series that combines the spectacle of hand-to-hand combat with elaborate, high-tech obstacles that test each competitor’s ability to survive. But the competitors do have an edge. Perhaps unsurprisingly for L.A., they’ve all had some work done. Physically (and occasionally freakishly) enhanced by drugs and technology, the results are both marvelous and monstrous. Against this bleak backdrop, one man, known only as “The Saint,” begins to rise above his fellow Suiciders.

If you’re a fan of action-packed, post-apocalyptic tales like Mad Max, The Running Man and Escape from New York, this is right up your alley. But it’s also deeper than any of those. The first issue emphasizes character as much as conflict, adding intriguing layers of depth and texture to this uniquely dark world that Bermejo has created.

Elvis Presley (The King) Died on This Day in 1977... Or Did He?

Popular music icon Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42. The death of the “King of Rock and Roll” brought legions of mourning fans to Graceland, his mansion in Memphis. Doctors said he died of a heart attack, likely brought on by his addiction to prescription barbiturates.

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jesse, died during the birth. Elvis grew up dirt-poor in Tupelo and Memphis and found work as a truck driver after high school. Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jesse, died during the birth. Elvis grew up dirt-poor in Tupelo and Memphis and found work as a truck driver after high school. When he was 19, he walked into a Memphis recording studio and paid $4 to record a few songs as a present to his mother. Sam Philips, the owner of the studio, was intrigued by the rough, soulful quality of his voice and invited Presley back to practice with some local musicians. After Philips heard Elvis sing the rhythm-and-blues song “That’s All Right,” which Presley imbued with an accessible country-and-western flavor, he agreed to release the rendition as a single on his Sun Records label. The recording went to the top of the local charts, and Presley’s career was launched.

During the next year, Elvis attracted a growing following in the South, and in 1955 Sun Records sold his contract to a major record label, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), for a record $40,000. His first record for RCA was “Heartbreak Hotel,” which made him a national sensation in early 1956. He followed this up with the double-sided hit record “Hound Dog”/”Don’t Be Cruel.”

In September 1956, Elvis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, a national variety television show, and teenagers went into hysterics over his dynamic stage presence, good looks, and simple but catchy songs. Many parents, however, were appalled by his sexually suggestive pelvic gyrations, and by his third appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, Elvis was filmed from only the waist up.

From 1956 through 1958, Elvis dominated the music charts and ushered in the age of rock and roll, opening doors for both white and black rock artists. During this period, he starred in four successful motion pictures, all of which featured his soundtracks: Love Me Tender (1956), Jailhouse Rock (1957), Loving You (1957), and King Creole (1958).

In 1958, Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army and served an 18-month tour of duty in West Germany as a Jeep driver. Teenage girls were overcome with grief, but Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, kept American youth satiated with stockpiled recordings that Presley made before his departure. All five singles released during this period eventually became million-sellers.

After being discharged as a sergeant in 1960, Elvis underwent a style change, eschewing edgy, rhythm-and-blues-inspired material in favor of romantic, dramatic ballads such as “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” He retired from concerts to concentrate on his musical films, and he made 27 in the 1960s, including G.I. Blues (1960), Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), Viva Las Vegas (1964), and Frankie and Johnny (1966). In 1967, he married Priscilla Beaulieu, and the couple had a daughter, Lisa Marie, in 1968.

By the end of the 1960s, rock and roll had undergone dramatic changes, and Elvis was no longer seen as relevant by American youth. A 1968 television special won back many of his fans, but hits were harder to come by. His final Top 10 entry, “Burning Love,” was in 1972. Still, he maintained his sizable fortune through lucrative concert and television appearances.

By the mid 1970s, Elvis was in declining physical and mental health. He divorced his wife in 1973 and developed a dangerous dependence on prescription drugs. He was also addicted to junk food and gained considerable weight. In the last two years of his life, he made erratic stage appearances and lived nearly as a recluse. On the afternoon of August 16, 1977, he was found unconscious in his Graceland mansion and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was buried on the grounds of Graceland, which continues to attract fans and has been turned into a highly successful tourist attraction.

FNS Tonight

It's been a hell of a week (and summer). Went to pick up Blaine in Detroit (300 mi round, wrong day). Stayed up 20+ hours and went again the next day. Add in quiet Fridays with most regulars doing what people do in the summer, and it's a bit demoralizing.

Tonight, for my pick-me-up the show is all about travel-related names: cities, countries, cultures, places. Any song (or band name) that speaks to traveling this big blue globe. I'll play requests live all night during the longest running music show on Google+ (true? Four years in October!) but you can put them here, too. No guarantees, though!

See you tonight!

P.S. Not sure of the call letters, but 107.1 out of Ann Arbor, Michigan was my pal during these long haul drives. Great station!

The Last Five Weeks

You've known for some time that you had a limited time left on this planet. You visited all the relatives, shed all the tears, went to all the old haunts and places you loved in your youth.

Now, your time is up in five weeks. You want to visit FIVE places you've always dreamed about, or want to return to. One week for each place.

Money is no object, but time is. You get one week in each place, then it's on to the next, until the end. Where will you go?

For me, my five places are:

Prague
London
Ireland
New Zealand
Colonial Williamsburg + Washington, D.C.

Prague because I fell in love with that town on my first day and ended up staying there for seven years. London, because that's where I traveled first in life when I was 15. Ireland,... more »

Ireland, because it is stunningly beautiful and because I had great adventures there. New Zealand because I've always loved Tolkien and that's where I want to retrace the films shot there. And Williamsburg because it gave me some of the fondest memories I had as a boy (and history lover), and D.C. because it did the same when I lived there.

So -- the challenge is yours. Five weeks, five places. Where will you go?

Just like +Charlie Hoover and his great daily questions, this one requires you to think hard and to tell us why. Oh, and if you feel like you have 10 weeks left, my additional five are: Where the D-Day landings happened in Normandy, France, Machu Picchu, Florence, San Francisco + Mendocino + Napa Valley, and Alaska.

UPDATE: Mystery solved: the partner has my Chromebook back in California and didn't realize he was signed into my account. Yes! No hackers in the dark! Just somebody who should have known better. Cough.

Anybody else having posts show up (within the last ten minutes for me) that you didn't share? I just deleted 3 posts that showed me re-sharing them. And I've had 2-step verification on for over two years. I'm not going to delete the next one so an investigation can be done...

Daddy, I Swear, I Didn't Do It!

Look at those eyes. Melting your heart. Makes me miss my babies so much it hurts. I can't even remember how long they've been gone now, but I still think of them all the time. Look at those eyes!

ALCATRAZ

A group of federal prisoners classified as “most dangerous” arrives at Alcatraz Island on 11 August 1934. Alcatraz Island is a 22-acre rocky outcrop situated 1.5 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay. The convicts–the first civilian prisoners to be housed in the new high-security penitentiary–joined a few dozen military prisoners left over from the island’s days as a U.S. military prison.

Alcatraz was an uninhabited seabird haven when it was explored by Spanish Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775. He named it Isla de los Alcatraces, or “Island of the Pelicans.” Fortified by the Spanish, Alcatraz was sold to the United States in 1849. In 1854, it had the distinction of housing the first lighthouse on the coast of California.

Beginning in 1859, a U.S. Army detachment was garrisoned there, and from 1868 Alcatraz was used to house military criminals. In addition to recalcitrant U.S. soldiers, prisoners included rebellious Indian scouts, American soldiers fighting in the Philippines who had deserted to the Filipino cause, and Chinese civilians who resisted the U.S. Army during the Boxer Rebellion. In 1907, Alcatraz was designated the Pacific Branch of the United States Military Prison.

In 1934, Alcatraz was fortified into a high-security federal penitentiary designed to hold the most dangerous prisoners in the U.S. penal system, especially those with a penchant for escape attempts. The first shipment of civilian prisoners arrived on August 11, 1934. Later that month, more shiploads arrived, featuring, among other convicts, infamous mobster Al Capone. In September, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, another luminary of organized crime, landed on Alcatraz.

In the 1940s, a famous Alcatraz prisoner was Richard Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz.” A convicted murderer, Stroud wrote an important study on birds while being held in solitary confinement in Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. Regarded as extremely dangerous because of his 1916 murder of a guard at Leavenworth, he was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942. Stroud was not allowed to continue his avian research at Alcatraz.

Although some three dozen attempted, no prisoner was known to have successfully escaped “The Rock.” However, the bodies of several escapees believed drowned in the treacherous waters of San Francisco Bay were never found. The story of the 1962 escape of three of these men, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, inspired the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz. Another prisoner, John Giles, caught a boat ride to the shore in 1945 dressed in an army uniform he had stolen piece by piece, but he was questioned by a suspicious officer after disembarking and sent back to Alcatraz. Only one man, John Paul Scott, was recorded to have reached the mainland by swimming, but he came ashore exhausted and hypothermic at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Police found him lying unconscious and in a state of shock.

In 1963, U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy ordered Alcatraz closed, citing the high expense of its maintenance. In its 29-year run, Alcatraz housed more than 1,500 convicts. In March 1964 a group of Sioux Indians briefly occupied the island, citing an 1868 treaty with the Sioux allowing Indians to claim any “unoccupied government land.” In November 1969, a group of nearly 100 Indian students and activists began a more prolonged occupation of the island, remaining there until they were forced off by federal marshals in June 1971.

In 1972, Alcatraz was opened to the public as part of the newly created Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is maintained by the National Park Service. More than one million tourists visit Alcatraz Island and the former prison annually.

One year ago today (11 August) we lost one of the gentlest, most outlandish, wildest, cerebral comedians of all time, Robin Williams.

For my poetry writing now, I need a muse to inspire me. Robin was my muse that day. This poem literally flowed out of me when I wrote it, with few few corrections. #RIPRobinWilliams

The Showman in The Bedazzled Crocodile Suit by Sean Cowen

I realized I had a POEM in me after hearing and watching a day of tributes to Robin Williams. Poems are few are far between in my twilight years, but he inspired me - as he always has. This one's for you, Robin.

THE SHOWMAN IN THE BEDAZZLED CROCODILE SUIT

A colorful robin flies
Between two worlds, of pain and sheer ebullience. The world
According to all needs unabashed laughter. Loud laughter.
Pure joy. Captain, My Captain, fly again.
Fly. Soar. Float above us, wings stretched
Across a splashed canvass of colors
Brighter than should be allowed. Laugh.

WITH us, as we relish you, your rapier wit, yer
Joie de vivre.  Our tears are as big
As a lonely elephant when we guffaw. You
Made as chortle, and spew our drinks
Over and over. We have been Playdough, squeezed
Through the firm hands of a master puppeteer, willingly.

Good Morning, Heaven!
The pearly gates spread wide open
For El Maestro. A man, who's comedic touch
Was as light as a snowball; heavy
As a burning sun. Burning man
And its chaos almost captures your soul, chief.
You never had a friend like me, but we had you.

We didn't have you for 200 years
But celluloid will. Good Memory will. Books
Will be filled with legends, about one
Shining star that ignited generations of wild
Imaginations bellowing out, in dervish cries,
From bedrooms to boardrooms ... Nanu, Nanu!

The History Shaman in the Asimovian world of
Tomorrow, in those Glorious Days of FUTURE
Will whisper but one name, robin.
And rainy days will start shedding their own
Barnum & Bailey tears. For you.
Messy, joyful, salty tears of
Understanding mankind. As you understood this
More perfect union.

Can you rest now, maniacal man? Your dues
Are Paid. The audience sleeps, as you sleep.
You're in peace, tossed in the air
From your mother's arms. Rest.
See you soon...
Don't worry, we'll improvise
The rest of the show.

RENT

Saw this mentioned in my stream from my friend +Randy Stokes  and had to comment. What a badass musical!

Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City's East Village in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same Off-Broadway theatre was also the musical's initial home following its official January 25, 1996 opening.

The show's creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly of an aortic dissection, believed to have been caused by undiagnosed Marfan syndrome, the night before the Off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. The musical moved to Broadway's larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.

On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run of 5,123 performances, the ninth longest-running Broadway show at the time (currently tenth after having been passed by Mamma Mia!). The production grossed over $280 million.

The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions. In 2005 it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members.

After Bugs Bunny had begun to outwit Yosemite Sam – the creation of the senior director, Friz Freleng – director Chuck Jones decided to create the opposite type of character, one who was quiet and soft-spoken, but whose actions were incredibly destructive and legitimately dangerous. Marvin is me, when I'm pushed to the breaking point as a solid Libra. I will always stand for the underdog and little guy, and for justice. But f&%k with me or those I champion, and I will instantly become Marvin the Martian. So, inside forearm, Marvin will soon be there!

Pulp Fiction Gave Me a Flashback Tonight

The best lines from Pulp Fiction. Go!

So, I had a great flashback tonight, watching Pulp Fiction again, after not seeing it for many years. In my Prague years, there was this funky, small theater that a group of us went to and watched this movie on opening night.

I remember it so vividly, because our seats were in these old mining carts, and this theater was in the middle of a park. It was the oddest experience, seated this way. At the time, this movie ruled, the music to the film was played everywhere, and all anybody talked about was Tarantino and how his new vision to filmmaking was amazingly fresh. Heck, we used to sell a boatload of the script in printed form, at the Globe Bookstore & Cafe, where I worked.

Kon-Tiki: Wood Raft Makes 4,300-mile Voyage on August 7, 1947

On this day in 1947, Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft captained by Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, completes a 4,300-mile, 101-day journey from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drifting on ocean currents.

Heyerdahl and his five-person crew set sail from Callao, Peru, on the 40-square-foot Kon-Tiki on April 28, 1947. The Kon-Tiki, named for a mythical white chieftain, was made of indigenous materials and designed to resemble rafts of early South American Indians.

While crossing the Pacific, the sailors encountered storms, sharks and whales, before finally washing ashore at Raroia. Heyerdahl, born in Larvik, Norway, on October 6, 1914, believed that... more »

While crossing the Pacific, the sailors encountered storms, sharks and whales, before finally washing ashore at Raroia. Heyerdahl, born in Larvik, Norway, on October 6, 1914, believed that Polynesia’s earliest inhabitants had come from South America, a theory that conflicted with popular scholarly opinion that the original settlers arrived from Asia.

Even after his successful voyage, anthropologists and historians continued to discredit Heyerdahl’s belief. However, his journey captivated the public and he wrote a book about the experience that became an international bestseller and was translated into 65 languages. Heyerdahl also produced a documentary about the trip that won an Academy Award in 1951.

Heyerdahl made his first expedition to Polynesia in 1937. He and his first wife lived primitively on Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas Islands for a year and studied plant and animal life. The experience led him to believe that humans had first come to the islands aboard primitive vessels drifting on ocean currents from the east.

Following the Kon-Tiki expedition, Heyerdahl made archeological trips to such places as the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island and Peru and continued to test his theories about how travel across the seas played a major role in the migration patterns of ancient cultures.

In 1970, he sailed across the Atlantic from Morocco to Barbados in a reed boat named Ra II (after Ra, the Egyptian sun god) to prove that Egyptians could have connected with pre-Columbian Americans. In 1977, he sailed the Indian Ocean in a primitive reed ship built in Iraq to learn how prehistoric civilizations in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and Egypt might have connected.

While Heyerdahl’s work was never embraced by most scholars, he remained a popular public figure and was voted “Norwegian of the Century” in his homeland. He died at age 87 on April 18, 2002, in Italy. The raft from his famous 1947 expedition is housed at the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo, Norway.

Boob jobs, tummy tucks, Botox - so many things in the world to "fix" aging and DNA. Do I succumb to what I really want (a beard like I used to have, with color) or stick with this gray sh stuff. And if I do that, do they look fake or is there a way to make the transformation more natural? Yes, this is all about vanity, but it's my life and I'm the only one living it, so why not?

You tell me.

Route 66

Few roads or highways gain the international notoriety that old Route 66 back in the day. Revered for its American spirit, and for its funky themed motels and roadside attractions along the way, it was destined to be remembered even with the passage of great amounts of time.

U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System.

Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).

The Restless Road: Day 13 – Lalibela to Addis Ababa

When +LaDonna Pride (who takes magnificent photographs, by the way) visited Fort Wayne, Indiana (for my wedding which didn't happen), we talked at length about my love general dislike of millions of flower photos in my stream. I don't mind a pretty picture or two - I'm just not a flower guy. One or two is okay; hundreds start getting my eyes to twitch.

So she and +Scott Cramer and +Lori Cramer +Christy Pemberton +Blaine Hall +Keith Cramer and dozens of other people probably overheard me rant just a bit about how flowers are truly not my cup of tea.

But there was an extra element to our talks - a *challenge, if you will. La Donna and Blaine seemed to think they could TREND some sort of #hashtag  like #SeanCowenLovesFlowers or something similar, just to put me in my place, thenon-flower... more »

But there was an extra element to our talks - a *challenge, if you will. La Donna and Blaine seemed to think they could TREND some sort of #hashtag  like #SeanCowenLovesFlowers or something similar, just to put me in my place, the non-flower-lover I am. They promised a kamikazee attack when I'd least expect it, but damn are they slow to the draw. So I'm forcing their hand!

I told them: bring it on. And I invite all the flora lovers out there to do the same. And if I see one incredible shot that knocks my socks off, I'll be the first to apologize and eat humble pie. But it will take a hell of a lot of convincing to do that. There's your challenge!

Use that hashtag to show the legions out there who's beliefs are the antithesis of my own, and prove me wrong. Show me how much #flowers are truly loved here...

Once again, a beautiful video to get my eyes wet (it's the weather!). So, apparently, +Blaine Hall and I will be having our 10th anniversary next March.

Damn, how time flies. I thought it was 7 or 8. I want to make sure he's happy as hell when we do get married (we had a hiccup last weekend when I was all ready to seal the deal -- ask him 'bout that).

So this video was great to see and h/t to +Casey McKinnon for this! Awesome!
