NASA2,314,876Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008338

Jessica Northey1,805,838Join @115263347034954886450  Wednesday October 24th starting 5pm PT! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=eDGGFu-Ok9w We'll be talking about Americana and folk music with @115355394914388821672, @101855386466968203040, @102002299339025067376, @107291158434082397409 as well as @111956683258824284439  We'll talk about what Americana music is and some performances showing difference styles! A few weeks ago, I wrote about the never-ending debate about the definition of Country Music. As tough as that is, it’s nothing compared to how one defines the term “Americana.”  In writing about this topic, I’m going to be (gasp!) honest about my thoughts – as they were when you first started hearing the term to describe a musical genre. There were several artists who had been favorites of the Country genre who no longer found themselves played on mainstream radio. Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris were two examples of this. Crowell had a string of top tens from 1988-1992, but all of a sudden his name disappeared from radio playlists. The same happened to Emmylou Harris following her 1988 top ten “Heartbreak Hill.” Critics of the musical format said it was that Country Music had changed – and gotten more pop and rock influenced. That is true – but, only halfway. If you listen to some of Harris’s post 1992 work, as well as Crowell’s, you’ll find some different sounds and subject matter that they weren’t doing earlier. That’s not saying they weren’t doing great music – but it WAS different than their own music that was played on top-40 Country radio just a few years earlier. So, (at least in my mind), that’s how the Americana format was born– as a place for acts who weren’t getting the commercial reception that they once had. Ok, I know I just offended several of my friends with that – but that’s my opinion. I never said that the music was bad, just different. Twenty years later, the definition of Americana is not that simple in my mind. One of the best albums of late in the format is Radney Foster’s current album, DEL RIO, TEXAS REVISITED: UNPLUGGED AND LONESOME , is a stunning re-take on his classic 1992 album DEL RIO, TEXAS 1959. The songs are the same that were radio hits back in the early 1990s. They were Country then, what changed? When artists like Patty Loveless release new projects, they get a warmer reception in the Americana format than Country – and this is by an artist that is a former CMA Female Vocalist of the Year. Granted, she wasn’t cutting Bluegrass music back in 1988 as her last album was, but the voice is still as pure and stunning as ever. But, Americana reaches far beyond the Country format. There’s tinges of Blues, Rock, Gospel, and Bluegrass that are sprinkled throughout. So, is Americana “anything outside of the mainstream?” I don’t know. The Civil Wars, a critical favorite, recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe and Sound.” What do you call that?  Part of my continuing education concerning “Americana” Americana & Folk Music Twangout with Twang Nation's Baron Lane, Joe Whyte, Heather Fay and Ryan Van Sickle.2012-10-25 02:00:0046

The most important thing I recommend you to do is to add it for your own good. I have just "cleaned" a little bit through all my other circles, and this one here was perfected in three whole months. #danielmihaipopescusharedcircles   #maximumperformance  I'm not going to mention anyone, if you will receive a notification it will be even better, the circle will appear on +CircleCount in no time.A "+1" will be appreciated, but only if you don't forget, or you'll have the time :)Thank you!2015-04-28 21:49:39491000

Dylan Fans

Any Dylan fans in the house tonight? How 'bout tell us your favorite Bob Dylan tune, and maybe least favorite - but tell us why about both. I'll start things off...

Favorite

Well, I have a ton of favorites, but or tonight, I'm choosing "From A Buick 6 (alt version) from Highway 61 Revisited.

Vintage Metallic Pink Vette

Look, sometimes you have to go "all in" with bold car colors, and they definitely did that here with metallic pink.

Corvette's are just naturally cool and a part of American automotive history. But what's doubly cool is when someone takes chances with colors like these. I respect their chutzpah.

Look, I started in Beta with ZERO followers, just like everyone else. Many posts early on struggled to find one or two people to +1 them. That was fine with me - I was in this for the long haul. Now, looking back, I am damn proud of the work I've done here - the posts that resonated with a thousand people, or just one person.

I give a great deal of thought to each post  - and I always have. I always can admit to myself when a post doesn't live up to my standards. In those cases (and there have been many) .. Penny Dreadful Combines Gothic Mystery, the Victorian Era, Horror, and Literary Characters Into One Cauldron of Macabre Deliciousness

Any fans out there? Here's a review by the AV Club's Genevieve Valentine. Possible Spoilers!

Few shows are looking to top themselves as gleefully as Penny Dreadful. Its first season introduced a smartly cast cadre of Victorian supernaturalists—so many of them drawn from literature of the age (Dr. Frankenstein and his creature Caliban, Mina Murray and Van Helsing, Dorian Gray) that the assembled team initially bore a marked similarity to Alan Moore’s League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Writer John Logan then proceeded to marionette all their accompanying tropes for his own ends. It didn’t always pan out; there were so many protagonists to juggle that atmosphere occasionally stood in for plot, and the season’s big villain, Mina, ended up more of a MacGuffin than a character in her own right.

But when Penny Dreadful worked, it worked: The ensemble got along affably, and though everyone’s subplots were subject to fit and starts, this was never a show about plot. It’s a loving examination of Victorian horror and a found family that assembles amid lush, often-macabre grandeur. Few of the show’s peers can touch it for sheer, unabashed Gothic, and season two’s set-pieces include a parlor studded with skulls. In every respect, Penny Dreadful knows what it is, and revels in its trappings.

The center of that atmosphere remains Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. Trading on Green’s gimlet-eyed stare and fathomless voice, Penny Dreadful smartly places her in the focal point of the action. Vanessa’s barely contained fury rockets her past the damsel-in-distress she could easily be, and instead offers a glimpse of someone deeply haunted and trying to oust demons she’s not even sure how to name.

Her fears only get deeper this season, as another of the Devil’s cadres is on her heels. So far, that terror seems to be overwhelming her nerve, and hopefully she’ll get back some of the signature ferocity that made last season’s séance scene one of the year’s best 10 minutes. Doubtless she will; the first two episodes of season two are more occupied with setup than showpieces. In the meantime, Vanessa makes for one of the small screen’s most intense penitents.

She’s the center of a cast that maintains an almost-inexplicable equilibrium despite the sort of disparate acting styles that usually spell disaster. Josh Hartnett’s understated naturalism, Harry Treadaway’s peevishly arrogant BBC angst, Timothy Dalton’s scenery-chewing, and Danny Sapani’s gravitas all operate together, an easy mishmash that works with horrified stares and grim humor like any good pulp novel should.

Not everybody’s so lucky: Reeve Carney’s Dorian is even more adrift this season, and Rory Kinnear’s Caliban seems to be scrabbling for angst in the face of Vanessa’s much bigger problems. Billie Piper is resurrected from a part so perfunctory the show scraps all evidence of it right down to the accent. But there’s something to be said for a cast where any two characters could sit down and be interesting—and for a writer who lets them, just to see what character beat the actors can wring from it.

Naturally, it follows that one of Penny Dreadful’s problems is that among so many characters, it’s actually hard for the horror to get much breathing room. Not in imagery—there’s creeps aplenty there, and the show revels in its prerogative not to explain things. (Some of its best occult symbolism exists so far for its own sake.) But amid all that saturated atmosphere, the villains can get flattened by the pressure and edged out for time.

This season, which picks up almost directly on the heels of last season, still has a sense that characters inhabit their own chronologies, and time goes only as fast or slow as the character needs peril to develop. Such flat villains mean the buildup can overshadow the payoff. While having Mina as the slightly Sapphic agent of an off-brand Dracula was pulp gold on paper, her arc ended abruptly and left the first season with a distinctly “What now?” denouement that felt like it was retconning itself in real time.

On the other hand, a show that felt like 10 episodes of plot in an eight-hour jug won another two episodes for its second season; even as a numbers game, hopefully this new villain arc will fare better. This time, it’s witches, as over-the-top as Victorian horror allows (every naked-screaming, baby-eating, blood-bathing inch of them). And the gloriously arch sun at the center of this coven is Helen McCrory, who’s sublime in a part that requires both high camp and genuine menace. She nails the former effortlessly with every cackle and monologue, and nails the second in moments like the bloody-bathtub scene from the teaser, which gains some new ineffable creepiness in situ despite its familiarity. Pitting McCrory against Eva Green with the Devil in the middle might be worth the price of admission all by itself.

Under the direction of James Hawes (who returns to the series after two appropriately over-the-top episodes at the end of last season), the visuals swing from Victorian-lush to slightly unsettling in a comforting Hammer-horror way. Besides the trappings of period horror—which have expanded to include a wax museum so perfectly seedy it trumps the Grand Guignol—every nighttime room is soaked with shadows, every slow pan suggests a build to something awful. Half a dozen tortured souls whose trials have just begun get richly lit, lingering close-ups.

It’s a gorgeous backdrop that’s often a little short on canvas for the story it means to tell. But on the strength of its cast, the beauty of its design, and the sheer joy it gets from its homages, it’s the sort of dreadful that’s mostly a delight.

History of Science Fiction

Classic work on science fiction from a few years back...

Ward Shelley is an artist identified with the Williamsburg scene in Brooklyn, New York. His work includes a series of diagrammatic paintings and graphical chronologies that illustrate the interweaving of historical narratives about art and culture. This map plots the science fiction literary genre from its nascent roots in mythology and fantastic stories to the somewhat calcified post-Star Wars space opera epics of today.

Rather than a narrative emerging out of the data, here the narrative structure precedes and organizes the data: the movement of years is from left to right across the grid that represents time, distorted and reconfigured into the form of a bug-eyed monster whose tentacles are like trace roots to pre-historical sources and whose body is the corpus of sci-fi... more »

Science fiction is seen as the offspring of the collision of the Enlightenment (providing science) and Romanticism, which birthed gothic fiction, source not only of sci-fi, but also of crime novels, horror, westerns, and fantasy (all of which can be seen exiting through wormholes to their own diagrams, elsewhere). Science fiction progressed through a number of distinct periods, which are charted, citing hundreds of the most important works and authors, and which includes film and television as well.

The Blood Demon Kraken Decanter, Octopus Sculpture by Elstwhen

This Blood Demon is a Seafire Kraken. Seafires are unique among their species for several reasons... Of course they are as venomous as the Basaltys, and as mean tempered as the Silkys, but they also possess bioluminescence. Even as tiny plankton they glow and shimmer.

This creeper of the deep changes color from vascular blue to purple abyss with the ambient light surrounding it.

Seafires are the most troublesome of all Kraken as they seem to have a fondness for "storm riding" as a mode of fast transport, that carries them far from their brood waters and, sometimes, beaching the young ones on some unlucky coastline.

Bruce Lee Is Helping Me Get Through Failure

On Friday and Saturday, I was all set to have a great event. I took a tent at the Shipshewana (Indiana) May Fest fully expecting to do alright. A few thousand people were there and many events were going on. It seemed perfect for us. I've done a ton of shows recently where I would end up selling sometimes hundreds or more of pool skimmers. Box after box.

At this show, I sold 3. Three, over two days!

Three. In my book, it's a monumental failure on my part, especially since my last Chicago show also failed (but not as grandly). When you figure in gas, lodging, booth costs, the time involved in set up and take down, and the time involved with all the hundred of convos - 3 is a depressingly bad number. Really bad, as in "write this one down in the history books" bad.

But then, I... more »

But then, I got philosophical today. I started thinking about how many great conversations I had, and how many enthusiastic people there were that responded well to what we were offering. And that was good, but not great. Until I ran across this Bruce Lee quote.

It reminded me to keep thinking about the long game. To keep thinking about how incredible our products are, and how they are absolutely helping to solve a problem in a glorious way: How do I (the consumer) NOT keep buying junk, over and over, when I know it is junk? Who can help me solve this problem?

+Pool Netr™ can. And that's the thought that pulls me out of my funk, and helps me realize that, even though THIS show was horrible, other great shows are right around the corner. Or, in my case, in Auburn Indiana next weekend!

Nancy Drew Books Displayed In a Very Cool Way

This picture instantly reminded me of two things: way back when, when I was an Assistant Manager of a Record Store, I saw that no other stores in town were doing anything fun with displays...

So I had the inspiration of displaying albums and CDs on floating mylar plastic shelves (not unlike these). They were an instant hit and they allowed the artwork to finally be seen. Maybe I was ahead of my time then. It was the early 80s after all...

Second: one year, my one and only brother Jamie, who is a bit like +Keith Cramer is to +Scott Cramer decided to play a joke on me at Christmas. He thought it would be funny to give me a collection of girls books - Nancy Drew Mysteries specifically. He laughed all night long --- until I told him that Carolyn Keene was a pseudonym for a collection of writers. It went over his head:... more »

Impressively calm camera crew records Jackie the Lion for MGM studio’s roaring lion production logo, 1929. Jackie was used from 1928-1956. Leo the Lion has been used from 1957 until today!

Here's some interesting trivia: for the production of Ben Hur ... One notable change in the film involved the opening titles. Concerned that a roaring Leo the Lion (the MGM mascot) would create the wrong mood for the sensitive and sacred nativity scene, William Wyler received permission to replace the traditional logo with one in which Leo the Lion is quiet.

Sidenote: When I lived in Reno, Nevada as a kid, the huge MGM Grand Resort was built there, and my brother and I did everything there from being in bowling leagues, to playing indoor tennis. And yes, we also had our picture taken with the MGM lion!

The Prop I'd Want From Star Wars Is...

For this special day -   #MayThe4thBeWithYou  ... here's a challenge for you. You're in the middle of Nevada at a secluded diner. George Lucas is eating alone at the counter. You take the stool next to him, and after a while, as any good fanboy would, you take about Star Wars. He loves the convo, and your company and says that you're cool and you can choose any ONE original prop from any of the films.

Which prop do you choose, and why?

He says you can't ever sell it, you'll have to sign a doc stipulating that, but you can share it with the world. Ready? Go!

DIY Pirate Potion Bottle

I always enjoy seeing how creative crafters can get, especially when it comes to cool things like "Pirates Bottles," from a Norwegian crafter. This is something you can do with your kids, or make for yourself - in any case, you'll love how it turns out!

Soon my summer holidays ends ...... but it's been a fantastic holiday with many hours of "treasure hunts" on the gorgeous beaches  of nothern Norway. Lots of sea shells, beautiful rocks, driftwood and pieces of glass polished by the sea in now waiting on my craft table to be transformed into something strange to remind me of this summer.

Unfortunately my son didn't find that special treasure  he was looking for ..... a real pirate treasure (probably very rare in the beaches of Northern Norway ) so I started my "pirate treasure making" :) It became a pirate bottle and clearly it must have belonged to a pirate of the most dreadful kind .....LOL. 2013

Soul Searching by Michael O.

"I think I always knew that art was in my future. Even as far back as preschool I can remember drawing pictures in class and wondering why no one else put as much time and effort into it.

I do believe that the focus and determination it takes to be a successful artist is something people are born with so I don’t really see it as something I was in control of. My job was to nurture it and try not to take it for granted." - Michael O, Digital Artist

The Walking Dead & The Eternal Wait

October. I have to wait until October. Octo-freakin-tober. It kills me each season. But there is a small reprieve at the end of this summer with the release of Fear The Walking Dead, which asks the question: What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in The Walking Dead?

I'm not sure how high my expectations will be. What do you think?

In any case, during these long waits I sometimes find myself turning into Jack Torrance in The Shining. All pent up, in a secluded winter lodge in my mind. Endlessly typing "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," over and over again. Yeah, it gets like that for me. I now call these periods each year The Eternal Wait.

Does anyone else experience this with shows they love?

FRIDAY NIGHT SESSIONS: What's Next?

It's been a long and winding road with FNS, but I wanted to give you a few updates, and ask you a few things.

We have the MOST LOYAL following on Google+ by far (IMHO) and we're just a few dozen people shy of 10,000 followers. Yes! Thank you all for sticking with us since 2011 - we love you to death!

As of now, we have been having between 1.2 2 MILLION VIEWS per month - how's that for incredible increase?

Imagine that - our little page is cranking out numbers like that because of you - our fans and supporters! You have always stood by us - and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts! One more stat: as of now, we have over 300,000 +1's (Likes) on the page. Cool beans!

Questions for You!

What THEMES and GENRES would you like to see us explore next? We've covered everything from 80s classics to jazz, from Indie music to Heavy Metal - but we'd really like YOUR INPUT on new show themes. I never want our flagship Friday show to be stale - so your comments can help me (and us) plan out our future at FNS.

What do you want to see and hear?

Do you want to see us do LIVE shows? Do you want to see LIVE BROADCASTS via #Meerkat or #Periscope ? Do you want to see us more active in social media? Let us know your thoughts - and what will help make your FNS experience better!

I'm all ears - and we've always been good at listening to our fans! But now and then we need YOUR HELP to make things even better! I would deeply appreciate any honest comments that would help us plan for the future, as this is definitely my baby on G+.

Also, I realize my website - fridaynightsessions.com needs a complete overhaul and relaunch. What sorts of things would you like to see there?

Finally, if you missed it, +John Voshell joined our team last week and he now has a Wednesday night #IndieMusic  show! Yes! John is a Rock God and Legend, and I am honored that he has joined us. He launched another page into greatness, and now I know he'll work his magic here as well.

So -- that's it. I ABSOLUTELY want your input and OPINIONS on how we can make FNS even better for you! Don't be shy!

Three weeks into a journey from Tahiti to the West Indies, the HMS Bounty is seized in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian, the master’s mate. Captain William Bligh and 18 of his loyal supporters were set adrift in a small, open boat, and the Bounty set course for Tubuai south of Tahiti.

In December 1787, the Bounty left England for Tahiti in the South Pacific, where it was to collect a cargo of breadfruit saplings to transport to the West Indies. There, the breadfruit would serve as food for slaves. After a 10-month journey, the Bounty arrived in Tahiti in October 1788 and remained there for more than five months.

On Tahiti, the crew enjoyed an idyllic life, reveling in the comfortable climate, lush surroundings, and the famous hospitality of the Tahitians. Fletcher Christian fell in love with a Tahitian woman named Mauatua.

On April 4, 1789, the Bounty departed Tahiti with its store of breadfruit saplings. On April 28, near the island of Tonga, Christian and 25 petty officers and seamen seized the ship. Bligh, who eventually would fall prey to a total of three mutinies in his career, was an oppressive commander and insulted those under him. By setting him adrift in an overcrowded 23-foot-long boat in the middle of the Pacific, Christian and his conspirators had apparently handed him a death sentence.

By remarkable seamanship, however, Bligh and his men reached Timor in the East Indies on June 14, 1789, after a voyage of about 3,600 miles. Bligh returned to England and soon sailed again to Tahiti, from where he successfully transported breadfruit trees to the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Christian and his men attempted to establish themselves on the island of Tubuai. Unsuccessful in their colonizing effort, the Bounty sailed north to Tahiti, and 16 crewmen decided to stay there, despite the risk of capture by British authorities. Christian and eight others, together with six Tahitian men, a dozen Tahitian women, and a child, decided to search the South Pacific for a safe haven. In January 1790, the Bounty settled on Pitcairn Island, an isolated and uninhabited volcanic island more than 1,000 miles east of Tahiti.

The mutineers who remained on Tahiti were captured and taken back to England where three were hanged. A British ship searched for Christian and the others but did not find them.

In 1808, an American whaling vessel was drawn to Pitcairn by smoke from a cooking fire. The Americans discovered a community of children and women led by John Adams, the sole survivor of the original nine mutineers. According to Adams, after settling on Pitcairn the colonists had stripped and burned the Bounty, and internal strife and sickness had led to the death of Fletcher and all the men but him. In 1825, a British ship arrived and formally granted Adams amnesty, and he served as patriarch of the Pitcairn community until his death in 1829.

In 1831, the Pitcairn islanders were resettled on Tahiti, but unsatisfied with life there they soon returned to their native island. In 1838, the Pitcairn Islands, which includes three nearby uninhabited islands, was incorporated into the British Empire. By 1855, Pitcairn’s population had grown to nearly 200, and the two-square-mile island could not sustain its residents. In 1856, the islanders were removed to Norfolk Island, a former penal colony nearly 4,000 miles to the west.

However, less than two years later, 17 of the islanders returned to Pitcairn, followed by more families in 1864. Today, around 40 people live on Pitcairn Island, and all but a handful are descendants of the Bounty mutineers. About a thousand residents of Norfolk Island (half its population) trace their lineage from Fletcher Christian and the eight other Englishmen.

This is my boss, Kerri Goltare, holding our brand new skimmer. It's in PINK and it honors all breast cancer survivors, and those going through breast cancer. We're trying to get stores throughout the country to carry these, and I'll be taking these on the road to all my shows. For each purchase, $10 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation! ( bcrfcure.org ) It's a charity that's rated A+ by charitywatch.org (and it received four stars from charitynavigator.org).

Soon, we're also going to have a teal version and we'll be donating a portion of each sale in honor of cervical cancer survivors, and those still battling their cancer. I wanted you all to be the first to see what we're doing here in our Ohio plant!

Woody Loves The Ramones!

I'm not sure where I saw this, but it seemed fun; I wouldn't have pictured Toy Story"s Woody loving punk rock. But here it is!

About The Ramones

The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974. They are often cited as the first band to define the punk rock sound. Despite achieving only limited commercial success, the band was a major influence on the 1970s punk movement in both the United States and United Kingdom.

All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname "Ramone", although none of them were related. They performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played a farewell concert and disbanded. By 2014, all... more »

Recognition of the band's importance built over the years, and they are now mentioned in many assessments of all-time great rock music, such as the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" and VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". In 2002, the Ramones were ranked the second-greatest band of all time by Spin magazine, trailing only the Beatles.

The cast of characters on that fateful August 22, captured by photographers Ethan Russell and Monte Fresco and Beatles assistant Mal Evans, included the Fab Four, Yoko Ono, a very pregnant Linda McCarney (a photographer herself), Apple Corps’ press officer Derek Taylor, Paul McCartney’s sheepdog Martha, and two donkeys Lennon and Ono kept on the property.

FNS: Battle of the Bands

Tomorrow night, I have an EPIC show lined up over at +FRIDAY NIGHT SESSIONS. Choosing six teams from Rolling Stone magazine's top 100 greatest artists of all time, we have a good old fashioned BATTLE OF THE BANDS going on!

Five Teams with Six Artists or Bands each will be competing for your love/attention/shares/+1's and the winner will be announced the following Friday at 10PM Eastern time. That'll give you a full week to "vote" and share your favorites!

It's going to be bloody, epic, opinionated ... and quite a sight to see! You can ONLY choose to be on ONE TEAM -- and you have to be a cheerleader for your team. Let's see which of these five teams wins the hearts and minds of Google+!!

Artists: maybe you can help create TEAM SIGILS or BANNERS to support your team!

The Skull & Crossbones Bag

I saw this and thought this bag was different. It intrigued me. It was via Instagram, so, of course, that gave me little to go on. What's a person to do? Try tineye.com (A reverse image search engine, for starters). But guess what? It searched 10.966 BILLION images and found nothing on this.

So the mystery remains. As it probably should be when were talking about mortality and death and all that...

Self-Esteem, Dreaming Big Dreams, and Saying Goodnight to the Plusverse

Seems legit. If only we didn't bury this self-esteem at young ages and were allowed to be ourselves our entire lives. Imagine a world like that. Pie in the sky? Maybe, but it's a good goddamn dream!

Dream well, and see you on the Flipside.

"Ode To Joy" ("Ode an die Freude") Beethoven Flash Mob in Nürnberg, Germany, 2014

I have to admit it, I get addicted to these, when I see them take on an organic nature (though I realize many are sponsored). Each flash mob interests me and grabs my attention. Nürnberg ones do especially, since I visited there more than a few times when I lived in Prague.

I've also visited that exact location they're performing at! I always had the most intense feelings in that town, to tell tell the truth, thinking of its history...

This is a celebration of the joy of classical music.

1978 - The Blues Brothers Make Their World Premiere on Saturday Night Live

It was Marshall Checker, of the legendary Checker brothers, who first discovered them in the gritty blues clubs of Chicago’s South Side in 1969 and handed them their big break nine years later with an introduction to music-industry heavyweight and host of television’s "Rock Concert", Don Kirshner.

Actually, none of that is true, but it’s the story that Saturday Night Live‘s Paul Shaffer told on April 22, 1978 as he announced the worldwide television debut of that night’s musical guest, the Blues Brothers—the not-quite-real, not-quite-fake musical creation of SNL cast members Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

The characters and the band that Belushi and Aykroyd unveiled that night took more than two years to evolve. The first incarnation came during SNL‘s first season, in a January 17, 1976, appearance singing “I’m a King Bee” as “Howard Shore and his All-Bee Band.” There were no dark suits, skinny ties or Ray-Bans at that point, but the appearance did feature Aykroyd on the harmonica and Belushi on vocals belting out a blues classic very much in the style of the future Elwood and “Joliet” Jake Blues, albeit while wearing bee costumes.

The Blues Brothers’ look—and much of their repertoire—would come together after Belushi’s trip to Eugene, Oregon, during the hiatus between SNL seasons two and three to film Animal House. It was there that Belushi, a committed rock-and-roll fan, met a 25-year-old bluesman named Curtis Salgado, future harmonica player for Robert Cray, frontman for Roomful of Blues and a major figure on the burgeoning Pacific Northwest blues scene of the 1970s.

Belushi became a regular visitor to the Eugene Hotel to catch Salgado’s act during the filming of Animal House, and it was from that act and from Salgado himself that he picked up a passion for the blues as well as the inspiration for the Blues Brothers’ sound and look .

Back in New York for the third season of SNL, Belushi and Aykroyd honed their concept for the Blues Brothers Band and recruited an incredible roster of backing instrumentalists drawn from among the finest blues and R&B session musicians in the country. Even if their debut performance on this night in 1978 hadn’t been a huge hit, the band was far too good to break up after a single gig.

Indeed, the closing portion of Paul Shaffer’s introduction that night—”Today they are no longer an authentic blues act, but have managed to become a viable commercial product”—ended up being borne out in real life, with the Blues Brothers earning three top-40 hits (“Soul Man,” “Rubber Biscuit” and “Gimme Some Lovin'”), a #1 pop album (Briefcase Full of Blues) and a piece of screen immortality via their 1980 film, The Blues Brothers.

If anyone can find that link for that April 22, 1978 show, share it! This video comes later...

Wall O'Books

Well, my first impulse was to cringe, as a die-hard book lover, collector and rare book seller. My second thought was to try and see which books were "honored" with their permanent tombs. ha! My third thought was wondering how this would look around a fireplace.

My last thought was this: I used to see thousands of books a week as a main buyer, and many books get ruined, have missing pages, get torn spines, have water damage etc. They're still readable for the most part, but you wouldn't want to have spores jumping in your nose from those. So this might be an alternative. I don't know - I'm torn on this. :-)

Sigmund and the Sea Monsters

"Sigmund and the Sea Monsters" is an American children's television series that ran from 1973 to 1975, produced by Sid and Marty Krofft and aired on Saturday mornings. There were 29 episodes spanning two seasons.

Plotlines were very simple and straightforward, usually some variation on the idea of Sigmund doing something silly to arouse attention, and the boys working to prevent him from being found by Sigmund's brother monsters, Blurp (Bill Germaine, Larry Larsen) and Slurp (Fred Spencer, Paul Gale). The brothers also worked to hide Sigmund from their overbearing housekeeper Zelda (Mary Wickes), elderly neighbor Mrs. Eldels (Margaret Hamilton) and Sheriff Chuck Bevans (Joe Higgins). Zelda was the boys' housekeeper while their parents were away on vacation. Strangely, the parents were never seen on the show, nor did they return home by the end of the series.

Ray Bradbury: 10 of His Most Prescient Predictions

Predictions from "Fahrenheit 451" and other works. He was spot on in so many cases, it's scary.

The imaginative Pulitzer Prize-winning author often wrote about the intersection of technology and modern life. Here, The Washington Post’s Hayley Tsukayama identifies 10 ways in which the novelist foresaw the trends and gadgets of the digital era.

1. Earbuds - The people in the “Fahrenheit 451” society sport “seashells” and “thimble radios,” which bear a striking resemblance to the earbuds and Bluetooth headsets of today.

2. Flatscreen TVs - Members of “Fahrenheit 451’s” futuristic society are also as obsessed with their large, flat-screen televisions as are any of today’s technophiles, and the viewing screens in Bradbury’s stories often take up an entirewall.

2. Flatscreen TVs - Members of “Fahrenheit 451’s” futuristic society are also as obsessed with their large, flat-screen televisions as are any of today’s technophiles, and the viewing screens in Bradbury’s stories often take up an entire wall.

3. Facebook In fact, the novel mentions that people are talking to their digital friends through the wall — the same terminology that Facebook would use years later for the digital hub that enables friends to post and see messages.

4. Social Isolation The loneliness that can come from constantly paying attention to the screens around you, rather than the life around you, is a prevalent theme in Bradbury’s work. He explores it in his short story “The Pedestrian,” in which protagonist Leonard Mead is arrested for the dual crimes of taking a walk and not owning a television.

Far ahead of the research and analysis that have spawned books on the effects of technology overload, such as Sherry Turkle’s “Alone Together,” Bradbury outlined how he feared televisions would change the world. In this passage, he compares a neighborhood of television-watchers to a tomb:

“[He] would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind he windows. Sudden gray phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls where a curtain was still undrawn against the night, or there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomblike building was still open.”

5. Self-Driving Cars “The Pedestrian” also features a self-driving — and self-thinking — car that arrests and commits the protagonist to a mental hospital. While far less advanced and much less sinister, self-driving cars are already on U.S. roads, as part of a Google project. As of last month, Google’s cars — clearly marked — can legally drive on Nevada’s roads and highways as long as two people are in the car during the tests.

6. Rising Electronic Surveillance The idea of electronic surveillance also popped up in Bradbury’s work, way before closed-circuit television became a fixture in major cities around the world. He was early in warning people about how such surveillance could be abused — worries that still echo today.

7. Short Attention Span Bradbury’s criticism of the coverage of live media events in “Fahrenheit 451” is fodder for media critics’ columns today. Bradbury disparaged constant, sensationalized news.

8. ATM's Bradbury also envisioned automated banking machines in the novel, which bear a striking similarity to the ATM and provide 24-hour financial information to their users.

9. Artificial Intelligence (AI) In “I Sing the Body Electric!” and other stories, Bradbury explored artificial intelligence and the philosophical implications of advancements in AI that could perhaps produce thinking, feeling machines.

10. E-Books Books as a medium aren’t banned — thank goodness — in today’s society, but reading a paper and glue version of a story isn’t as common as it once was. Bradbury loved actual, physical books, as my Washington Post colleague Alexandra Petri points out in her tribute to the writer, and would not allow “Fahrenheit 451” to be published as an e-book until last November, The Guardian reported.

He once said that e-books “smell like burned fuel” to him, but he allowed his classic to be published digitally because it wouldn’t be possible to have a new contract without e-book rights.

The Battery-Operated Apollo 11 American Eagle Lunar Module

I saw this in a segment on Antiques Roadshow tonight and was struck by how great it was. It was apparently produced as a joint venture between American toy company Mego and Japanese company Daishin Kogyo in 1969.

The toy is composed of tin litho and hard plastic, and its measurements are approximately 7"x7"x8". It is battery operated and performs a variety of functions, including bump-and-go; the hatch opens and shuts; a small plastic astronaut goes in and out an opening in the side; its radar/antenna revolves; lights flash; and it makes a 'lunar' sound.

I don't remember seeing this as a kid, but I'm sure i would have loved it if I was given it, being a space geek and all. Very cool.

As with all toys, having a box dramatically increases it's value, and even a beat-up box like this is nice to have...

Pipe Shelves and Arranging Books by Color

The pipe shelves are cool, don't get me wrong. But back in the day, in the early 2000s, I was a senior book buyer for a large SoCal used book store. About once a week, decorators would come in and pull shopping carts full of books based solely on their colors. It killed me then, and it still does. They chose books simply by the color or the dustjackets and spines.

To this day, I'm trying to figure out the appeal to this 'color arranging" if someone genuinely loves books and is a reader. I can see how this might be something that appeals to collectors, and the way they arrange their collections.

But c'mon, never judge a book by it's color er, cover and all that.

I really don't see the appeal to this, but if you do, feel free to enlighten me. Is this something that... more »

Meeting New Friends Who Are Music Lovers

I got back late tonight from my Chicago trip. It was Biblical rain the entire way back, with wipers on high. The show had mixed results, but in some of my down time, I had the chance to talk about music a great deal with +Ron Essany and his buddy Mike, who had a booth across from mine.

The conversations were great and we talked about my Sacramento days and show I'd seen at Club Can't Tell and other places. Ron just started here based on my recommendation - and you guys all know how sometimes I'll ask you to add Newbies sight unseen. That's what I'm asking for him, and Mike when I can tag him in.

Ron digs all kinds of music and we talked extensively about +FRIDAY NIGHT SESSIONS and my love of music. He's a musician, an all-around cool guy, and as soon as he started talked about equipment in his basement... more »

He's a musician, an all-around cool guy, and as soon as he started talked about equipment in his basement studio, I knew I had to bring in +Motavis Jones and others imminently more qualified than I. I'm thinking he should look for music communities and maybe a community for recording engineers, if one exists. He thinks he was probably born in the wrong decade and he admitted he loved the 80s as well, 80's movies, too, and music ranging from bands like The Deftones to the Foo Fighters to metal music and so much more. He'll have to tell you all his likes.

But let's give him a huge welcome, since I spend days talking to people before I ever ask any of you to accept them as I do. He's' one of the good guys, and when I get Mike's info, I'll share that with you as well. Thanks.

The Art of Palmistry - A Believer, Or Not?

Do you remember being a kid and going to carnivals and fairs, and there was always a fortune teller around? Did you ever have your palm read, where the reader talked about your "life line?"

Disney Characters Surprise Shoppers

I remembered this from not long ago, and it reminded me how incredibly large the Disney footprint is. This brand has got to be at or near the top of the world's most recognizable brands.

It makes you think about creation and artistry, and how hard work and creativity can create a brand that moves across multiple generations, and how that brand can become global. When you really think about it, it's a testament to that side of our brain that lets us roam free and become kids again...

The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906

At 5:13 a.m., on 18 April 1906, an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, killing hundreds of people as it topples numerous buildings. The quake was caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over a segment about 275 miles long, and shock waves could be felt from southern Oregon down to Los Angeles.

San Francisco’s brick buildings and wooden Victorian structures were especially devastated. Fires immediately broke out and–because broken water mains prevented firefighters from stopping them–firestorms soon developed citywide. At 7 a.m., U.S. Army troops from Fort Mason reported to the Hall of Justice, and San Francisco Mayor E.E. Schmitz called for the enforcement of a dusk-to-dawn curfew and authorized soldiers to shoot-to-kill anyone found looting.

At 7 a.m., U.S. Army troops from Fort Mason reported to the Hall of Justice, and San Francisco Mayor E.E. Schmitz called for the enforcement of a dusk-to-dawn curfew and authorized soldiers to shoot-to-kill anyone found looting.

Meanwhile, in the face of significant aftershocks, firefighters and U.S. troops fought desperately to control the ongoing fire, often dynamiting whole city blocks to create firewalls. On April 20, 20,000 refugees trapped by the massive fire were evacuated from the foot of Van Ness Avenue onto the USS Chicago.

By April 23, most fires were extinguished, and authorities commenced the task of rebuilding the devastated metropolis. It was estimated that some 3,000 people died as a result of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and the devastating fires it inflicted upon the city. Almost 30,000 buildings were destroyed, including most of the city’s homes and nearly all the central business district.

Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Each time I see a new photo or teaser video, my heart skips a beat. Yes, I'm an ultimate Fanboy (and always have been). But today's 2mn clip blew my mind. 25 December is so damn far away! Grrr.

For the record, I mentioned on other posts that JJ is the man for the job; I am not in the least concerned that he'll do what the last three films did. I have utter faith that it's going to be cool. And, for the record, I believe VII will hit $2bn in box office revenues and will become the most successful film ever. You heard it here first.

Love Is Dancing In The Kitchen

There's something about this incredibly intimate gesture that always gets me. I'm the born Romantic of the family, and especially in movies, I love seeing these sorts of moments on film. They always stir my soul.

Husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, boyfriends and boyfriends, girlfriends and girlfriends - it's all about love. And love is the most powerful human emotion. Period. Love is what I believe our entire existence is based around. This is a great photo.

What's your favorite, intimate, dance moment with the one you love?

How about your favorite movie scenes? Two pop into my mind instantly (and they don't have to be set in a kitchen...)

Predicta: A Mid-Century Television & A Thing of Beauty

The Philco Predicta is an American television made in several models by the Philco company in the late 1950s. It is arguably the most iconic television set in existence and is to many people the "classic" 1950s TV set. With its trademark detached picture tube, it is atypical of most early television sets which were build in sturdy wooden or bakelite cabinets. It was one of the first commercially released televisions to feature a nearly flat screen.

Many Predictas were produced for the Holiday Inn hotel chain; but the design was considered too radical by everyday consumers, and many sets languished at television dealers. Slow sales, lack of a color model and very poor reliability eventually drove Philco into bankruptcy and sale in 1960.

Due in part to their 1950s styling and rarity of working examples, they are now highly sought-after collectibles. They have been featured many times in movies, TV, and music videos. Telstar acquired the rights to the name and now produces brand new sets with larger, color screens and modern internal electronics, but has not produced many sets in recent years.

Beethoven Flash Mob

I have to admit it, I get addicted to these, when I see them take on an organic nature. The obvious ones kid of bore me - but ones like this inspire me, and the way this builds in layers is beautiful.

This is a celebration of the joy of music.

Should ... Would ... Could ... Did.

That about sums up the philosophy of warriors who get things done. Like many of us, and many people we all know.

It reminds me of a story: many years ago, I was visiting my grandparents house in Sacramento. My favorite aunt, +Donna Cowen was turning 30 years old that day. As we were all hanging out, a bright red Fiat Spyder was presented to Aunt Donna as a birthday gift from my favorite Uncle, Stan. The license plate read (or close to this)-
4Ever29.

Donna has been the inspiration for me my entire life for getting to did. Her favorite quote I remember back to my teenager days: "Just do it!." I will love her eternally, and I've tried to live this mantra my entire life. Get things done. DO things. Just do it. Live life!!

The Shawshank Redemption Prison: I'll Be Visiting There Soon.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies (and a comfort film I've posted about before, one that I have watched dozens if not a hundred times.

I had no idea the exteriors were filmed here in Ohio, at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. That's only about 2 hours away for me. Better still, I'll be taking my skimmers to a flea market there sometime this summer. It sounds like a hugely fun event for me! The prison has been prominently featured in motion pictures and plenty of "Ghost" shows, and if nothing else, it's affordable, and I'll get some great photos. Plus, I'll finally get to visit some of the locations in Shawshank!

Ohio State Reformatory

The history of the Ohio State Reformatory began in 1861, the field where the reformatory would be built on was used as a training camp for Civil War soldiers. The camp's name had significant meaning to Ohio as it was named Camp Mordecai Bartley to honor the Mansfield man who served as Ohio governor in the 1840s.

In 1867, Mansfield was promoted as a candidate for the placement of the new Intermediate Penitentiary (the original name before it was changed to Ohio State Reformatory). The city raised $10,000 to purchase 30 acres of land for the prison, and the state acquired 150 acres of adjoining land for $20,000; the cost of the facility was $1,326,769. The Intermediate (Ohio State Reformatory) was intended as just that, a halfway point between the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster and the State Penitentiary in Columbus which was intended to house young first-time offenders.

Construction began in 1886 and remained under construction until 1910 due to funding problems which caused construction delays. The original architect for the design was Levi T. Scofield from Cleveland, he used three architectural styles; Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne. Levi T. Scofield designed the reformatory with these unique styles to help encourage inmates to be reborn back into their spiritual lives.

The creation and construction of the entire building was entrusted to well-known architect F.F. Schnitzer, whose name also appears on the cornerstone, and is recorded as Superintendent in documents found in the cornerstone. During 1891 the name was changed from Intermediate Penitentiary to Ohio State Reformatory. On September 15, 1896 the reformatory opened its doors to its first 150 offenders. These prisoners were brought by train from Columbus and put immediately to work on the prison sewer system and the 25-foot stone wall that surrounded the complex.

Schnitzer was presented with a silver double inkwell by the governor of the state in a lavish ceremony to thank him for his services. The exterior of the building, which is built from brick and concrete, is designed in the Romanesque style giving the frontage a castle-like appearance.
