The pattern mirrors an evolutionary phenomenon - "negative frequency-dependent sexual selection", or to put it more simply "an advantage to rare traits".

Or sometimes you just don't have time to shave...

"The watch keeps time to a few nanoseconds per day. The attractive display is based on 7-segment red LED technology. Batteries are included (they last about 45 minutes but are rechargeable). AC adapter included. There are no adjustments for daylight saving time; however the clock does handle leap seconds and keeps track of the [Modified Julian] date. This HP wristwatch includes 5/10 MHz and 1 PPS outputs. An internal keypad is used to set the date and time. Not waterproof nor even water resistant. High-performance models available."

Keeps you in good shape, too!

"We have already lost too much. There are so many wonderful sites from 1994-2004 that have disappeared. All that is left are domains that have been turned into Go-Daddy-SEO-Landing-Page-clutter because the old site had a Google Page Rank higher than the pulse of a nursing home. I hate to think about how many amazing pre-Web 2.0 sites that are gone for good because a service shut down, ad revenue dwindled, or there was a lack of time or interest or both."

"Unlike a rusting highway bridge, digital infrastructure does not betray the effects of age. And, unlike roads and bridges, large portions of the software infrastructure of the Internet are built and maintained by volunteers, who get little reward when their code works well but are blamed, and sometimes savagely derided, when it fails. To some degree, this is beginning to change: venture-capital firms have made substantial investments in code-infrastructure projects, like GitHub and the Node Package Manager. But money and support still tend to flow to the newest and sexiest projects, while boring but essential elements like OpenSSL limp along as volunteer efforts. It’s easy to take open-source software for granted, and to forget that the Internet we use every day depends in part on the freely donated work of thousands of programmers. If open-source software is at the heart of the Internet, then wem... more »
