Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.  This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready.  I'd like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).

I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and
I'd like to know what features most people would want.  Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

PS.  Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

This is probably one of the greatest "how it works" films ever. On July 2, 1978, the New York Times printed its last edition using its old -- hot-type, lead-casting -- Linotype machines, and switched to the new computer-based systems. As they did this final run, they filmed the whole process, talked with people working on the systems, and showed all the details of how the printing process worked; and then a few months later, they did the same with the new system, to show how they stack up against one another.

The result is by turns fascinating and touching, as people who have worked these machines for decades say farewell to their clanking, mechanical friends.

By the time I was in charge of laying out my own paper, the whole layout process was done on computers, and it felt like magic. "Cut" and "Paste" are so much easier when they don't literally involve cutting and pasting. But this will always leave me with a warm feeling for these old machines, and a slight sadness that I never had a chance to work in lead)

The speculative-fiction webzine The Future Fire (TFF) celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2015. It does so in grand style, with a planned anthology (which you can help become reality), a blog carnival tour and lots of memories of possible futures. It is in this context that I had the pleasure of interviewing James Bennett, a British writer of Fantasy, Horror “and the odd contemporary fable”.

That first paragraph sounds eerily familiar... And it's only just the beginning.

"I realized that my digital life was getting too complex, so I turned off chat. Then I removed myself from a bunch of Slacks. I filtered a number of mailing lists into automated folders, muted some conversations in Gmail, and switched from Gmail to mutt to do some basic inbox management. I unsubscribed from some Dropbox folders, and altered Flux to darken my screen at more appropriate times. I unsubscribed from Twitter’s automatic emails, erased some spare Twitter accounts, and unfollowed or muted some people and organizations. I organized my passwords a little and unsubscribed from some Box folders. I turned off Bluetooth and location mode on my phone. I erased all the songs in my Spotify playlist and erased a few hundred old tweets, with the idea that I will erase all of them."
