Moritz Tolxdorff637,772Bridging the gap between textbook history, and real-life. Stories, questions, interaction... that's what this is about.  A brave student in her High School World Civilization's class wanted real stories and answers outside of what her textbook and classmates offered. One post, a few questions, and 50+ comments later we've managed to impress a teacher, a department, and hopefully some students.  Join us in discussing the way history is taught, not just from the United States perspective, but that of Germany's, dealing with World War II. _"It is much harder to hate, or even stereotype, if you have real people to connect (those stereotypes) with."_Discussing German History2012-11-18 19:00:0031

Yifat Cohen85,996*How the social revolution is changing the way we do business.* We all keep hearing about how important it is to engage and build relationships - what does it really mean, and what tools are out there to help us master it? When @105103058358743760661 spoke at DreamForce he saw *a vision for a future of business information systems that is entirely based on relationships.* *ENGAGE OR DIE.* In this Hangout On Air, we'll dive into the topic of engagement with @105103058358743760661   as he explains what he calls "engagement leverage." This framework bridges the kind of internal engagement you need with employees with the external engagement you need with customers, suppliers, partners and other external stakeholders. It's a simple, yet surprisingly powerful way for thinking about the way your organization gets work done.  Gideon writes at Alchemy of Change about helping companies bring purpose and technology together into a more powerful source of competitive advantage. Gideon just came back from leading a panel on engagement at Salesforce's Dreamforce Conference (now the biggest tech conference in the world) and so in addition to talking with us about the engagement leverage model, he'll also share some of what he saw at Dreamforce. Legendary Go Win By AlphaGo

In the first game of a five-game match between 9-dan player Lee Sedol and DeepMind's #AlphaGo , the AI has won. Even if it doesn't win a single other game this match (and I would quite expect Sedol to win the rest!), this is still a tremendous accomplishment: the first time a computer has ever beaten a top-tier international player in a regulation game of Go.

For comparison, the first time a computer did this in chess was in 1996, when Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in the first game of a six-game match, before Kasparov turned around to win three and draw two. But the next year, Deep Blue and Kasparov played again, and this time Deep Blue won the tournament, 3.5 to 2.5. By 2006, computers could reliably beat humans at chess.

Go is a much more complex game than chess, especially from a computer's perspective, and this level of competition was thought to be a decade or more away. DeepMind's success in this is significant not just because of the milestone, but because it illustrates the tremendous power of the new foundational techniques in AI that they have been exploring. These techniques are likely to have a huge effect on how machine learning works over the next several years, and together with the major advances in neural networks in the past few years (many of which happened at Google, DeepMind's sister company in Alphabet), we should expect huge strides in the abilities of computers to observe and understand the world around them in the years to come.

Congratulations to the #AlphaGo  team!___Legendary Go Win By AlphaGo

Background about the Clara Rockmore Theremin doodle

Engineer Will Knowles explained that the first attempt at recreating the theremin sound was fairly straightforward: just a "single oscillator producing a wave at a given frequency." But Knowles and his team wanted to create a sound quality that resembled Rockmore's own playing. "To accomplish this," he said, "we worked with the Chrome WebAudio team and theremin expert Mark Goldstein to create smooth sliding between frequencies and scaling vibrato to simulate her masterful play style." They also used filters to get across a "a softer, more aged feel."

Reminder to myself to check this out

In December of last year, we announced that we would wind down the Freebase service and transfer the data to Wikidata. We also made a commitment to continue to support users of the Freebase API by creating a replacement API that would help with searching the Knowledge Graph.

Today, we’re happy to announce the Knowledge Graph Search API (http://g.co/KnowledgeGraphSearchAPI). This API will allow you to query the Knowledge Graph for entities. It uses standard schema.org types and is compliant with JSON-LD specifications. We are working on a replacement for the Freebase Suggest Widget (https://developers.google.com/freebase/v1/suggest?hl=en) that leverages the Knowledge Graph Search API and hope to release it early next year.

We will continue to support the Freebase API and widget for three full months after the Suggest Widget replacement is released, at which point we will shut it down. If you want to stay updated on future improvements to our Search-related developer offerings, please follow our Google Developers channel at https://plus.google.com/+GoogleDevelopers.

I recently discovered  the Google API Discovery Service. Its a restful service that returns the schema of any public REST API that google offers.  Using this data I wrote a script that generates Apps Script libraries for each API.
I found the APIs pretty consistent, but there may be some non-uniform schemas  that would cause bugs in its respective library. If you find one let me know.   Also the library template is not perfected yet. If you have any insights on how to make them better let me know.
I haven't put these on Github yet but they will go up soon.  Note: If you select a script from the shared link and you get a 'No Preview Available' message click the pop-out button on the top-right of the screen or you can click the "Add to Drive" button to add the entire folder

Very nice feature

Google Chrome will now defer playback of autoplay media until the tab is foregrounded in the latest Dev Channel. This means no more "Where's that sound coming from?" moments when an ad for instance decides to autoplay in a tab you've specifically opened in the background.

Resources will still be preloaded if indicated but Chrome will delay the start of playback until you actually visit the tab.

This cool feature prevents obviously user annoyance but also conserves power as Chrome will only consume power once the tab is foregrounded.
