Floral Sunrise
w/ choir of droplets singing

Many friends use LightRoom,  but I battle away with regular Photoshop and get rather board with the processes.  This shot I found in my LightRoom folder, which was created during a trial of the software and after looking at all the other images in the folder,  I think it's time to try LR once again.

Have an AMAZING DAY Googs, 1/2 way to Saturday  :o)

Favorite Flap
known as The Happy Dance

Have a HAPPY Tuesday
I spent years photographing ducks for practice, well over 750,000 shots snapped as I worked on all aspects of Speed shooting.  Of course,  I would go to the pond, (which is extremely close to home)  fully loaded with photo bait, (aka: bread) and pop off shots for hours, 12 months out of the year.  Coldest was -40 degrees, which is the same in either Celsius or Fahrenheit at that temp.
My rule was this, if my bare hands are in pain from the extreme cold, then the camera needs to be inside.
We're once again in the colder months, and I hear the duck calling me out to the pond.   I think it's time to re-visit my little feathery friends and hopefully they will perform some classic flapping for me, with the sun shining bright for those needed high speed shutter bursts.

REFLECTING ON MYSELF
#selfie in a pigeons eye

During 1 year of trying to reflect my path, I've found myself living in a self destructive solitude, and quite comfortable.  What is Happiness?
I smile & laugh, joke 24/7,  love and am loved, eat well, no stress to speak of.  I just don't ever leave my 9th floor Apt anymore. Last time I stepped on the ground was October last year, and that was only for an hour after being inside since early May.
This has been my guarded secret while trying to blend in with the outgoing people I used to be like for 90% of my life.  During all this time,  I've watched a few great people come forward openly with personal issues, and I admire their courage. I have failed myself recently, and HAVE to make a change soon before I fade out.

Quality won't be the best there is to offer because most of my equipment is technically outdated by industry standards, but I'm not going to look at that as an excuse.  It's the desire along with the understanding of how equipment functions, not the camera brand or lens type.
Of course, if anybody has a cheap Canon mount wide angle 10-20mm lens collecting dust, please let me know. (any brand for Canon mount)

Wordless Humor

Last week,  I had this vision and laughed.  After a few days I finally decided to put the vision to pixels using my PS..
This is what turned out. (and I still laugh)

Yes, I'm a bit quirky at times.... but,  that's just who I am.

A Fly in July...
Just snapped this Fly shot about 15 minutes ago while I was out on the balcony enjoying the warm sunshine. This little guy? Dead as dead gets... I couldn't even begin to say how, but this is exactly as I found it on a leaf in my potted rose bush.
For the macro photo buffs, it's like a gold strike. :o)

A Day Late...
but such a great image for Canada Day.
Not my image, shared from fellow Canadian G+ user +Don Komarechka

Happy Canada Day Everyone!

I'd like to share with you the image that started my career as a professional photographer. It was my first attempt at truly pre-visualizing an image, and working on the concept for months before finally ending up with what I had imagined: a collection of bright red maple leaves on a bed of snow in the shape of Canada's flag. Here's how this image came to be:

In the autumn of 2008 when the leaves were just beginning to change colour, I had the idea to do something creative with them. One of the first ideas was a Canada Flag arrangement, but I thought to myself "naw, that's been done before". Extensive online research revealed that I had an idea that wasn't fully explored by other artists (since then many people have imitated the idea, and I'm certainly flattered!). The idea didn't just include the leaves however, it needed them on a bed of snow... that's the trick!

Bright red leaves would almost never occur with a fresh snowfall, the seasons don't overlap enough for that. I needed to preserve the leaves, so I thought back to kindergarten and I understood how: iron the leaves between wax paper and they'll stay vibrant for months, if not longer. Good thing I was paying attention at the age of four! Off I went ironing the best crop of leaves between wax paper, which even made my parents raise an eyebrow to my activities. No intervention was made, so I continued preparing for my idea.

The next thing I needed was fresh snow. I needed a winter day after a fresh snowfall, coupled with bright sunshine and absolutely no wind. Even the slightest whisper of wind would blow the leaves around (extremely fragile and light after being preserved) and shatter them to pieces. I found the day I was looking for on January 11, 2009 in the heart of winter. I laid out the leaves and the image nearly made itself.

I used a polarizing filter to cut down on the glare created by the wax-covered leaves, and a small bit of Photoshop work to repair a broken leaf tip and shorten the center stem. I left imperfections in the center leaf though; I wanted it to appear "real", not "perfect". The image was then cropped to a 2:1 ratio, the true dimensions of the Canadian Flag.

I'm proud to be Canadian. This image embodies many aspects of Canada that I enjoy: beautiful nature, vibrant colours, and crisp winters. The connection goes far deeper, however. Balanced but imperfect, I think Canada is the best place in the world to live.

Happy 146th Birthday, Canada!

Drop on a Rose Leaf
(50mm reversed on 90mm macro lens)

This morning, I noticed the nice red lined rose leaves growing closeby, and fortunately had my trusty water spray bottle and 50mm ready for some Drop Action.
Some of my favorite macro shots I've taken in the past have been on the same leaf type,  bringing out some really cool greens and reds.

Rockin Rhianna
(a little bit from the artistic side)

Along with nature, sport and macro photography, and all the video w/ editing,... I still really enjoy dabbling in the artistic side of editing.  Back in 2006-2009 I got into Photoshop quite heavy. Quickly finding out that there's also a niche viewing audience for such edits. Some people don't care for it at all.
Me personally, I still enjoy creating fun images to pass the time and there's also nothing better than turning up the music loud while melting a vision into pixels on a screen.
Happy Monday 2 U

FLY MACRO
Phaenicia sericata or Lucilia sericata (blow fly)
This type of fly is usually found circling something your dog left behind on a recent walk.   Don't worry,  I wasn't face first in a pile of dog doo,  this guy was fortunately just hanging on a leaf trying to get warm after a chilly night.
Just wanted to add some colour to balance out the image that I posted earlier in the day.
Have a great Tuesday afternoon/evening/night

FOUND along my way TODAY
#macromonday
Sitting on a leaf, warming itself in the barely visible sun, made this fly such an easy target.  With a slow approach and the cam set to LIVE VIEW, (so I don't have to crouch in pain) I moved in until I saw the "Fly Beast" in focus. I usually use the slow rocking method to get the best focus point, leaving both hands free to steady cam.

Here's a quick pic from "The One That Got Away"
I was close to getting this guy totally clean & clear.  :o)

It's Friday in my part of the World, and I'm happy to say I noticed some cool looking drops on my Roses yesterday evening,  and of course had to snap a few close-up Macro shots.
This one is a dual lens setup using a 50mm backwards on a 90mm Macro lens.

ORGANIZED GRAFFITI
(story & links below)

A few years ago, while working a show at the famous Metropolis theater in Montreal, I noticed the back alley and entrance to the bustling St. Catherine street was completely black from ground level to the top of the third floor of the buildings.
I was sure I had seen some nice street art during past visits,  but maybe it had to do with a clean-up project or something?
Well,  it was the "Something" alright.   In three days, those walls were transformed into some of the best wall art and tags that I've ever seen.  Working three (or four) levels high on scaffolding, it was, and still is, the coolest event to watch transpire in such a short time.  By Monday morning, all the scaffolding is off site, and the walls speak their stories.

PETALS in the RAIN
( like sunshine in the sea )

The first thing I always want to do on a rainy day,  is to take pictures of drops.   My fascination with the little round orbs began when I bought or built ways of getting even closer, always comparing the last shot taken and improving off that.
I don't think I'll ever be close enough & hopefully one day I can build a molecular structure macro lens.
Yes,  it's going to have to be BIG.
Artist/photographer friend +Hai Vu did a fantastic illustration of a lens that just might do it.  (CHECK IT OUT HERE.)

It takes a lot of "Bird Skill" to imitate an EAGLE, but in the end, you're still just a gull that's not happy being a gull.

DROP DEBRIS
(note to self: clean surfaces)

After posting a quickie Rose yesterday,  I actually felt a little "PHOTO EXCITEMENT" flowing through my veins.
Charged up my Flash batts, attached 50mm to 90mm, found and dusted off my LightChute, then grabbed a random CD from our HUGE stack of things that really need to be stored because we NEVER use them anymore... and made a few drops using my trusty little spray bottle.
All those good intentions and I still missed the dust on the CD.  As soon as I was focusing,  I noticed the amount of garbage swirling in my drop... then I realized that the debris is becoming the shot,  not the drop.
I WENT WITH IT, and this is what I got...

GOOG MORNING (goog friends)

After waiting out the bleak winter months, and surviving the cold chills up on the 9th floor...  my camera was dusted off and used to snag a few tiny rose shots yesterday afternoon.

To my delight, the Mrs brought home a few potted plants.
NO, not pot plants, potted plants with flowers and vines. (geez)
BUT,  if you want to send some pot plants wrapped in little paper tubes...  I won't refuse.

#macromonday  is the only group theme I get into for now, and so happy after 2 years going so strong.  Biggest group I participate with on G+ and curated by the hard working +Kerry Murphy +Kelli Seeger Kim +Jennifer Eden

Snowflake-a-Day #97

This is a favourite snowflake for a few reasons: the symmetry, the center, and varying silver tones created by crystal thickness. Be sure to view large or you're really not seeing it. :) and help out the snowflake book project, now 25% funded in less than a week! http://igg.me/at/skycrystals/

High res: http://donkom.ca/gplus/DKP_0349.jpg . When it comes to "composition" of my snowflakes, I typically crop square and throw the branches on angles... but this one was screaming to be placed perfectly horizontally and I think it works well. You can clearly see the angle of the light from my ring flash coming in primarily from the left side, and on just the right angle to show the changing elevation in the center of the crystal.

Based on the thick flower-like center and the blocky tips on the branches, I'd say that this snowflake grew rather slowly. I believe there would be some kind of correlation to the "rings" you see near the center and the rate of growth, similar to the rings you would find in the trunk of a tree. That's just a guess, and I'll have to ask the experts.

The book funding project is coming along very nicely, and there are still some early-bird books available for a $30 contribution! http://igg.me/at/skycrystals/x/1642596 The indiegogo campaign has been live for less than a week and we're already at 25% of the fund goal, so if you kind folks on Google+ keep contributing, the goal will certainly be reached. A long way to go still, so everyone's support is needed! and you get a great book as your reward. :) Thanks everyone!

For those curious, a few technical details... shot at roughly 5.3:1 magnification with no cropping (except to make it square) using 34 frames focus-stacked handheld. The snowflake measures just under 3.9mm across.___Macro perfectionist...

I'm currently checking out the new layout,  interesting features and organization.
Is it working for you too?

AND NOW....
something completely different from me in HD

I was doing a bit of experimenting this morning with how I could run my sound through my new camcorder using the audio in/out.  I mounted the cam on the end of the guitar using a mini Gorilla Pod and actually found the results intriguing because of the auto focal changes and the image stability reacted like an actual person shooting the clip.
My little Jam? Haha..., Not planned or practiced,  just improvising for the test.
The name Jammy Jam comes from actually still having my Plaid flannel jammy pants on when doing this early this morning.
Also posted on my FB account, so those that are friends there www.facebook.com/stuart.m.williams/ may have already see this today,  but maybe not?
Enjoy my Jammy Jam CAM TEST

FROZEN HAZE
a result from extreme cold, -42

(Factory steam rises in the cold)
The past few days have been the brutal times that we all dread during the winter months up north.  There are a few things that are quite beautiful when it's extremely cold,  but that obviously requires being outside to capture the goodness.  Unless I can go out looking like a padded round ball of warmth, and not be noticed by kids pointing their finger and laughing,.. I'm going to stay inside.
AS FOR THE PIC
I snagged this the other evening from my balcony 9 floors up, using a 300mm and just loved the orange glow that the ice crystals were providing,  similar to pollution or sand storms.  Just like a sandwich of sun,  it was the final moments of another cold day gone by.

PLEASE ADD YOUR CURRENT TEMPERATURE :o)

A Mobile Moment
my hands were burning cold

This is my current morning scene, as I drink coffee and freeze on my fingers while outside sneaking a smoke. I could never smoke inside, especially in a car. GROSS!!!

EASY WATER-DROP BACKGROUND TIP
how to 'TUNE' in color

Go grab on of those CD thingies that we never really use anymore, and either try a really strong light with a very low angle, or use a perfect WINTER AFTERNOON sun with low light coming through your WARM window.

ALMOST NO SETUP NEEDED (maybe a tall chair)
I've talked about this easy color background before, but if 1 new pair of eyes see this for the first time and then gets the desire to try, then my job is done here.  :o)

PICK'n a PIC
#macromonday +Macro Monday +Jennifer Eden +Kerry Murphy +Kelli Seeger Kim

This morning was really hard to Pick a Pic.  Such a great week we just had here in Ottawa, Canada. The weather yesterday broke all the current records, and you could be outside in shorts without even caring.  Maybe only little trips to the balcony, but outside is outside!  :o)

Over the weekend,  I relocated my work space at home and can now have drives hooked to laptop all the time,  Browsing through all of my saved folders, and checking out shots from 2003 to present was sort of fun,  also a reminder of how I once thought I knew what I was doing.  Oh,  how times have changed.  For the better or worse,  each of us chooses a path to travel.

Ninja Macro Shooting
sneaking in undetected

We all want the best shot possible, and sometimes we don't want to scare our little bug friends away,  so we become satisfied with telephoto macro shooting from a few meters away.  *Not Me*
I would rather have 5 missed opportunities with 1 captured ultra close.
Sometimes I''ll bump an insect and loose my chance,  but most times when I move ultra slow, like a tree in the wind swaying back and forth,  I get close enough to catch a KEEPER, Ninja style.
HAPPY THURSDAY GoogFriends

 EXCUSE ME...
while I splash some color on your screen

Reflections of a Spring morning melt.
After digging more through my LR exported folder,  I've found all sorts of photos I played with while using LR.
This shot is the outcome of fast snowmelt in our local forest, and sometimes it's like a giant lake with little islands of trees popping up everywhere,  quite a sight.
Thanks for allowing me to stop by...  :o)

I enjoy creating abstract art, playing music and recording, video effects and production.

Smiles for thecamera..... more »

                   circle of 500
             and Group 6: 421 to 500
►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄

If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard.
Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.

Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100
Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193
Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circle
Group 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340
Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420
Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)

If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post.

I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive.

The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.

Cheap & Easy LightChute

FREE Lens Reversal & MACRO Tool

If you've ever tried getting close to a subject using the body flash on your camera, then you know that the lens creates a shadow that basically kills the whole shot.
With a larger External Flash, you will also get a lens shadow and never actually be able to fully extend your macro lens.
Fully lined with foil for reflective value and not larger than the flash head width.
Just a tube, hollow flash extender.

LightChute constructed w/ Hobbyboard, Tape & Foil.

Considering the different sizes of lenses and gear, you're going to have to do the measuring and cutting all on your own, but I hope that just getting a visual of this LightChute that I've been writing about may excite any DIY'rs wanting to save a few dollars, and enter a whole new level of possibilities.

Okay Ladies, herrrrrrrre's Johnny!
(a little Sunday morning fun with photoshop)

Lots of layers, some done with 'Find Edges' and then blended with bottom layers. Others done in Painting mode and also blending. I did a fine smoothing blend with mouse and lots of little circles and rubbing in the end to soften the tones, and works just like rubbing tissue on a pencil drawing.  *Outrageously Artsy, eh? :o)
Anyway, enjoy your Monday & do whatever you do, with a smile.

Dragon Flake
snowflake from today

50mm reversed on 90mm macro lens,  and I saw a dragon.
Truth is,  I had such a hard time with jamming the end of the 50mm into the snow, but after a few thumb wipes and 90% of snow removed, I was back at attempting to catch some snowflake goodness.

For what it's worth, fellow Canadian +Don Komarechka is a absolute pro with catching the details in his snowflake photography, and well worth the ADD to your Circle or Community.

Guess what doesn't happen on Friday? The end of the world!

To be clear: the world is NOT coming to an end on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. The Earth won't be destroyed. The Maya calendar has nothing to do with anything. The Sun won't align with a galactic black hole. Planet X doesn't exist. There is no planetary alignment. There won't be a solar storm that'll fry us. There are no giant asteroids on their way to impact us. The Earth's poles won't shift.

We good? Want more details? You got 'em:
