The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in northern Australia and crosses the South Pacific Ocean with on other no landfall. By combining local geological knowledge with satellite data on existing injection sites in that location, Shirzaei hopes it will be possible to more accurately predict where future injections are likely to trigger quakes .

Radical thought here - don't frack, then there's no risk that fracking will cause earthquakes.

Some important questions: Why were the uggies outside? Why were they not keeping the owners tootsies snugly warm? How come they're so clean?

It might be a slow start to snake season in Adelaide, but one eastern brown has braved chilly weather for as long as it took to find a cosy refuge.

An Adelaide woman went to collect her Ugg boots from outside her house and saw a brown tail disappear into a boot.

"We picked up the shoe, tipped it out and dropped it into the bag. It was pretty easy to do." said Snake Catchers Adelaide manager Rolly Burrell.

A local landowner in the hinterland immediately surrounding the globally iconic Bells Beach submitted a development proposal for tourist accommodation.
The local community opposed the proposal
The local Surf Coast Shire refused the proposal.
And now the landowner is taking it to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
If VCAT approve the proposal the tourist development will proceed and the first precedent will be set for further tourist developments in the Bells hinterland/viewshed.

No consideration appears to have been given to the impact of these possibly blinding lasers on the endangered animals-there are good reasons to be worried. When stressed Rock Wallabies are known to abort foetuses and eject joeys from their pouch. This show could result in deaths of these legally protected animals. Rock Wallabies have lived undisturbed on these cliffs for millennia- they should not be put at risk for the sake of a frivolous festival. We ask the new NT Chief Minister to urgently act to prevent this happening and protect our vulnerable wildlife which is a far greater asset to the region's tourism than a one-off light show.

Further information from Mark Carter on FB: "So, Rock Wallaby meeting happened. All was civil and those present were frank and honest so in that respect it was excellent. Lots of information gleaned from it was not so good though:

-Nobody present had the power to change or stop the lights blasting the animals.
-The rock wallaby refuge blasting is to be the core part of the festival.
-Lasers will be used.
-No consideration of the Rock Wallabies welfare was taken before we started the petition (so well done us).
-The position seems to be that the animals will be impacted but they hope its not going to be serious(!?!).

So, this campaign needs to step up a level. I have just got off the phone to a News International journalist and have a TV interview lined up for next week. Anyone who can interest any media contacts in this please forward this to them."

For me, re-reading Thief of Time is like getting reacquainted with an old friend.

h/t +John Poteet

I think I've read Thief of Time four or five times now. Each time I find something valuable in reading it.

Quotes from the book:
"Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some caves somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH’, the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry."

"Wen considered the nature of time and understood the universe that is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it."___For me, re-reading Thief of Time is like getting reacquainted with an old friend.

But while major news outlets publish and broadcast Hanson’s speech, some very different speeches from newly-elected pollies have flown relatively under the radar. It’s worth taking the time to watch and listen to the words of these new politicians who in their humility, bravery, and willingness to be vulnerable, reveal a dignity and cause for hope that people like Hanson do their best to extinguish.

The role of social media in the bereavement process has been the focus of an increasing amount of research. Generally, it is thought that social media can help in the bereavement process, although the persistence of a person’s profile online may make final acceptance of the passing more difficult. An interesting finding has been that when people post on a memorial page, they frequently do so in the present tense as if the person was still alive.

In the UK, a survey has found that 36% of people would like their profiles to continue being available online after they die, with a larger proportion of 18-24 year olds preferring this option than over 55s.

It doesn’t have to stop there. There are now services which allow you to continue Tweeting after you die using a bot that has studied your tweeting style. Other services allow users to send final messages via Facebook and LinkedIn.<... more »

"I've been a business journalist for over 20 years. During that time, I've uncovered many egregious cases of corporate misconduct – from Australia's largest coal company who paid next to no tax on billions in revenue, to the $4.5 billion siphoned offshore by Murdoch's Newscorp.

Without the ASIC corporate database, none of this would have been possible. If the government goes ahead with its plans to sell the register, it will create a monopoly over public information. This will make it much harder for journalists like me to conduct investigations into corporate financial affairs.

That's why I've been left with no choice but to speak out against this Government's efforts to put Australia's corporate The ASIC database contains more than ten million records on Australian businesses. It's the best paper trail we have to track corporate financial affairs, including tax dodging, money laundering and human trafficking.

Already, the charges levied by ASIC for this supposedly public information are believed to be the highest of any country in the world, at $38 a pop. Now, this Government wants to sell the ASIC database to a private operator. What are they thinking?

How could anyone believe that delivering the nation's corporate database into the hands of a private monopoly operator could possibly serve the public interest?

We need to work together to sound the alarm on this sell off – while there's still time to stop it. Can you join the call for this dangerous sell-off to be called off?

If all my years investigating corporate affairs has taught me anything, it's that we need more corporate scrutiny, not less.

Michael West
Investigative Journalist "

PS from the GetUp strategy team: We will deliver the ASIC petition, along with the Open Letter from Journos, this Thursday at Parliament House. With the Turnbull Government yet to make a final decision on whether to go ahead with privatisation, a huge petition will send a clear message to political leaders that this sell off is politically toxic. Looks like an interesting read!

h/t +Mark Traphagen

An excellent, if disturbing read, I found via +David Amerland's Weekly Read today.

I've dedicated the rest of my life to embracing uncertainty and ambiguity (after spending way too many years trapped in dogmatism). I still fail often, because the evolutionary forces toward embracing the easiest certainty at hand, and our weak ability to detect ourselves dong that, war against it.

But I'm convinced embracing uncertainty, epistemological agnosticism, is the way forward.

In other words, intuition, like attention, is “an intentional, unapologetic discriminator [that] asks what is relevant right now, and gears us up to notice only that” — a humbling antidote to our culture’s propensity for self-righteousness, and above all a reminder to allow yourself the uncomfortable luxury of changing your mind.___Looks like an interesting read!

Some years ago I worked with teenagers in "care". Too many of their stories mirrored Corey's experience and the care was minimal to non existent. Of course there are outstanding carers and they should be celebrated and rewarded for the incredibly difficult job they do ... however, ALL carers should be of high calibre. Workers need to be treated with respect, and the revolving door of employment stopped. This speech is powerful, and well worth reading - it's an insight into a troubled world which exists alongside privilege and affluence, and is usually well hidden and rarely discussed so openly or so politically.
Trigger alerts. Rape, paedophilia, abuse .

"The episode ended with a return to an earlier theme, as John Bell read a speech from The Book of Sir Thomas More, spoken by the famous Tudor politician to an angry mob protesting refugees entering London.

“Imagine that you see the wretched strangers,

Their babies at their backs and their poor luggage,

Plodding to the ports and coasts for transportation,

And that you sit as kings in your desires,

Authority quite silent by your brawl,

And you in ruff of your opinions clothed;

What had you got? I’ll tell you: you had taught

How insolence and strong hand should prevail,

How order should be quelled; and by this pattern

Not one of you should live an aged man”

The continuing shame of mental health services in Australia.
" ... as a society we prefer to malign, laugh at, fear and/or hide ... [those with schizophrenia] away, instead of providing secure, lifetime medical help. We still shoot them when they do strange things in public places, tell jokes about how OCD we are (little realising how debilitating OCD is and how terrible it is to laugh about it), and chuckle about the “schizo” down the street or the “mental” sleeping rough in our local park."

"Awareness raising without action plans for those whose awareness has been raised is cruel. Unconscionable. And utterly disgraceful.
But this is Australia, and this is what now passes for mental health care here."

"... call your local member or Health Minister Susan Ley if you’d like to do something concrete, on Minister.Ley@health.gov.au or (02) 62777220"... more »

Good article.
Just understand that their advice at the bottom, if you are having problems with suicidal thoughts, is not helpful.
Don't call Lifeline. They have the same problems as the other organisations mentioned. They use a script to sort you out. The people on the phone are suffering from compassion fatigue. You may wait twenty minutes for help and then feel worse after going through assembly line care.___The continuing shame of mental health services in Australia.

Well worth reading and acting on - via Stephanie Dowrick on FB: "I urge you to act as well as read this article in today's Sydney Morning Herald. I wrote it out of frustration that so much energy from our most zealous, active politicians is going on issues that limit freedom rather than progress a more just, and far healthier society. I'm also frustrated that they do this - sometimes obsessively - in the name of religion and especially in the name of Christianity. If you feel similarly, please don't hesitate to post a comment on the newspaper's webpages or even write a letter to the editor at the Sydney Morning Herald. Those of us who care about social justice need to speak up, and not just protest among ourselves!! Especially when we speak on behalf of those without a voice."

An interesting, longish article. I don't have time to discuss it at present, but feel free to chew over it at your leisure.

A sunny day nuisance and a bit of a kerfuffle about nothing, or face the issue square on and make some tough decisions?

A well presented article with lots of examples and viewpoints from different groups who'll be impacted first.

So my work associate pointed this out today and I wanted to share.

This is the same paper, same date but from different markets. One geared to help sway the Austin Liberals and the other from a clearly more conservative market. Read the difference in headlines. Crazy!!!

I remember listening, enthralled, to an excellent episode of ABC's Bush Telegraph, about the individual family song of magpies, before the funding cuts. Here's an article about swooping, and basically a reminder about being a good neighbour to magpie families.

OK. So +Rob Salzman complained about the angry red top banner in G+ and I haveta agree with him, it's pretty harsh. I don't know what can be done about Android/iPhone apps, but on the web version, install the Stylish extension
FF: <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/>
Chrome: <https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe>

Here's the set of snippets I put in that change the color (I have a few more bits like the house icon/ home that is generally also red, you might add other things for other items on that panel, but this is a start). The last two can probably combine, but I haven't tweaked it that far.

If you replace 327F99 with the color of your choice, ti's easy enough to change. (Sorry, there are no variables in CSS.) There's lots of color pickers out there, I used this one <http://html-color-codes.info/>.

/* top bar across 99% of width /
.ecJEib .FGhx7c {
background-color: #327F99 ;
color: #000;
}

/ sliver of red on far upper left (wtf) /
.XS1fT {
background: #327F99;
}

/ more posts indicator, middle upper /
.GyPXQ {
background-color: #327F99 ;
}

/ stupid write icon lower right /
.jXDCJf {
display: none;
}

/ home icon upper left panel /
.M9kDrd.pWQY8d .DCYkOe {
fill: #327F99;
}

/ color for home link */
.M9kDrd.pWQY8d {
color: #327F99;
}

Blergh - the red is here. For the record, I detest it. Feeling crook and seeing red? It'll make me feel worse. Got a headache and seeing red? Nope. 40+C and fire season? Nope. And it appears I can only post public or my circles. Backwards step G+ . Oh good grief, and comments are pulsating. Who thought that was a good idea? Ever met people with visual issues, dyslexia, ADD? What the hell are you people thinking? Gawd. I've finally got a break from the intense work I was involved with, thought I'd catch up with what's been happening and am confronted with this dog's breakfast. Crap, now there's a bright red glob directing me to new posts in the middle of the screen at the top. AND I can't scroll till I've finished posting this.
*Wanders off feeling extremely disgruntled.

I'm sorry to hear that +Laston Kirkland has passed away a couple of weeks ago due to illness. With nearly 4000 posts in just over 5 years on G+ he always gave an entertaining and optimistic outlook on life. I feel honored to have had him circle me back when i finally discovered his frequent, short but witty, snip-bits of technological wonderment. He has left a fine legacy of future visions for his partner and children to enjoy for years to come, as well as for the rest of us to continue to savor. He will be missed.

Here he proudly holds a freshly printed copy of The Tomorrow Project Anthology. (see PDF, Ch. 5, "Mapping People" by L. Kirkland)
