Gailen Mapes85,294Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera A-B - 10 of 27Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting February 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcirclesNote: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2015-04-10 10:39:23139000

Vinod Kalathil9,118My Morning Circle - January 2015 EditionAs many of you know I started this circle of photographers whom I reshared in the last 12 months. I have learned so much from these photographers and it has helped me come a long way. Here are some of my favorites from January 2015.A colorful lighthouse by +Beena R https://plus.google.com/+BeenaR/posts/7VizSfHV8A7A dreamy monochrome landscape by +Richard Susanto https://plus.google.com/+RichardSusantoPhotography/posts/9fvT1TMX9MLUnique reflections by +Werner Polwein https://plus.google.com/+WernerPolwein/posts/cXfZPQu9Rt6If you get a notification, you are in this circle. Labour of faith

This 3 frame vertorama shows the massive main bronze door, and the wonderful artwork that surrounds it, at the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (also known as Il Duomo di Firenze), which is the main church of Florence, Italy. The three huge bronze doors are adorned with scenes from the life of the Madonna. The mosaic above this door is "Christ enthroned with Mary and John the Baptist".

But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

A very pleasant morning today - cool but not cold, just enough cloud to add definition to the sky but not obscure it, and the water temperature just right to stand knee deep in. Reached Coogee Beach in Sydney's Eastern suburbs at first light. Lovely flaming red cloudy sky before the sun rose, and when the orb showed up, this is what it looked like.

Rockpool for gulls

A view looking northwards from the rockpools at Dee Why Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches area. In the foreground is what I presume is an old rockpool, used by seagulls for their amusement now. Stretching from midground to background is Dee Why Beach.

I'm late but not too late

I was late this morning getting to Dee Why Beach (Sydney Northern Beaches) for sunrise. This was the first photograph I took, so it was a short while after sunrise. However, because of the thick band of cloud near the horizon, this was the first time the sun broke through and even at this time, the golden colours of sunrise were still around.

Eyes on the sides of my head

This is a test shot - one of the first with a new Samyang 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye manual lens, shot a few minutes after sunrise this morning at Dee Why Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches area. When shot with the horizon in the centre, the fisheye effect is not apparent and it behaves like a 12mm ultra-wide. What I like is that this lens has a 180 degree field of view on a FF camera - the beach you see in the distance (Dee Why) was actually on my left, and the headland in the centre of the frame is Long Reef Point, which should have been a lot further to the left. The skate board on extreme right was also not in my own field of view. Due to the extreme curvature of the front element, I can't attach any filters otherwise I would have curbed some highlight blow-out with an ND Grad where the sun was bright behind the clouds, and got rid of some reflection off... more »

Some exposure compensation next time perhaps.___

Along the length

This is a view across the length of the beautiful Barcelona Cathedral (Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia), showing the high vaulted ceiling and chapels all around the periphery.

Three frame vertorama, high ISO as it was pretty dark inside. 16mm, f/8.0, 1/15sec, ISO 10000, handheld.

Magnificent

We almost didn't visit this building. We were wandering around Barcelona and headed somewhere else, but passed by the Barcelona Cathedral and went in. What a beautiful building! Constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries, this Gothic cathedral is simply magnificent.

Mostly clear? Not where I was!

Didn't bode well when I set out today well before first light to shoot the sunrise at Warriewood Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches area. It was raining and the whole sky was obscured by thick dark clouds. Stood on the sand in the water at the south end of the beach with an umbrella over the camera and tripod but while I was there, the subdued orange glow you see here was the only indication that the sun existed. Of course, life is perverse because when I drove back home, the sun came out!

Silent Carousel

It was late on a cold winter night and there was hardly anyone at the Piazza della Republica in Florence, Italy. The antique carousel, still operated by the Picci family, silent and still at this time, somehow looked sad.

Walk carefully

Sunrise today as taken from the rocks off Freshwater Beach in Sydney's Northen Beaches area. Was interesting (and a little scary) to see how the sea surged and raced up the steep worn rock right to where I was standing even though the swell was not particularly high. The rocks were very slippery from all the algae and I had to tread very gingerly. Quite a boring cloudless sky, and therefore the pre-sunrise colours were nothing special either. Curl Curl Beach and Dee Why Head can be seen in the distance on the left. It was windy and pretty nippy early in the morning but the water was warm in comparison.

Crowning work

This masterpiece sculpture was captured as a 4 frame vertorama @70mm rather than with a wide angle lens so that the beautiful features breathed into it by Benvenuto Cellini can be better seen, so view full screen, zoom into it and have a look. Cellini's "Perseus with the head of Medusa" at the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, is considered his crowning work. While known as a violent and tortured soul, his work, especially gold and bronze sculpture is exquisite. This sculpture was created in 1545 for the Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici. Cellini cast it as a single piece of bronze because he was competing with Michelangelo’s David, Bandinelli’s Hercules and Cacus, and Donatello’s Judith and Holofernes, which were already erected in the piazza.

Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, it is an incredible building really worth seeing, even though it is as yet incomplete even though construction was started in 1882.

High ISO image shot at night. 35mm, f/4.0, 1/40sec, ISO 11400.

Look upon these works in wonder

This three frame vertorama shows some of the most prominent features of St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. This shows the awe-inspiring work of Michelangelo, incuding the massive dome, the tallest dome in the world. Bernini's baldacchino, the structure seen below the dome is supposedly the largest piece of bronze in the world, and is above the altar, below which is supposedly the tomb of St Peter. Also seen are the four massive pillars called Bernini's Towers, each of which contains an important relic. Who stole the sun?

Was at Little Bay in Sydney's south-east at first light today awaiting the sunrise but the sun never showed up. There was great colour to one side of the sky but where the sun was to appear was thick cloud. Was my first time at Little Bay and I must say the experience was a little bit scary. It was very windy, cold, rainy but the scary bit was the sheer power of the sea - standing on those rocks with the sea pounding against them and spraying all over me, and then powering in through so many channels right under me and then rising up above my knee level, and this was at nearly low tide. I could see why rock fishermen so often get swept to a watery grave when the tide is higher.

The sun shines not on us but in us

Maroubra Beach in Sydney's south-eastern suburbs a few minutes after sunrise. The low orange-red sun reflected brightly off the glass panes of one particular building and for a brief moment, there were two suns.

The sun shines not on us but in us

Maroubra Beach in Sydney's south-eastern suburbs a few minutes after sunrise. The low orange-red sun reflected brightly off the glass panes of one particular building and for a brief moment, there were two suns.

Partly cloudy

Partly cloudy was how they forecast today, and at sunrise, that's what it was. The sunrise was brilliant though, as seen here at Maroubra Beach in Sydney's south-eastern suburbs.

An elliptical square

This is a view of the huge Piazza San Pietro (St Peter's Square) at the Vatican, taken with St Peter's Basilica to my back. The open area you see here is surrounded by the two hemicycles of a four-row colonnade. The Square was designed and built by Bernini between 1656 and 1667.

A very pleasant morning today - cool but not cold, just enough cloud to add definition to the sky but not obscure it, and the water temperature just right to stand knee deep in. It's a long way...

There are few building interiors that are as awe-inspiring as those that can be seen at the Vatican. The sheer opulence and grandeur throughout this huge sprawling complex is virtually unparalleled. This is the scene that greets you as you enter via the official visitors entrance. This is St Peter's Basilica, with the high altar visible in the far distance. The tomb of St Peter, one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ, and the first Pope and Bishop of Rome, is directly below the altar.

Some wedding cake

Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II is an enormous white marble monument that dominates Piazza Venezia in Rome and was built in 1885 as a tribute to the first king of a united Italy, Victor Emmanuel II. Half of the monument is used for exhibitions while the other half houses the Museo centrale del Risorgimento, a museum dedicated to the history of the unification of Italy. In the centre (top) is the prominent statue of the king - it weighs fifty tons and measures twelve meters long. The entire monument is supposedly not loved too much because of its ostentatiousness and mismatch with all the ancient Roman ruins that surround it on the Capitoline Hill, a lot of which were demolished to build this monument. It has derisively been called 'typewriter' and 'wedding cake'.

Bring them right in and don't mind their heads

St Thomas's Tower is another of the 21 towers that make up the Tower of London. It was built by King Edward I in 1275. It was used for royal accomodation and later for prisoners. The famous gate under it is Traitor's Gate. This double gate leads to the Thames and was used when access via the river was required. Famous prisoners like Queen Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas More entered through this gate.

A sight to behold

This is part of the interior of the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami (Italian, St. Joseph of the Carpenters), located in the Comitium, the political centre of the ancient city of Rome, on the northeastern slope of the Capitoline Hill. The date on the sign outside says 1538. The organ you can see at the rear of the church was installed in 1836. What amazes me about most of the places of worship I saw in old Europe is the richness of the work and the priceless artwork that one could invariably find in them.

On the lower level of this church can be seen the Mamertine prison where legend says St Peter & St Paul were imprisoned. St Peter was later crucified at the Circus of Nero to the south of St Peter's.

Pardon the interruption to your morning

When the forecast said "slightly cloudy", it didn't mention, "all that cloud will be bunched up to block out your rising sun", but that's what it was. The sun popped out for a fleeting instant only to be immediately swallowed up by the band of cloud and it remained quite dark. The Green Door

This is the Temple of Romulus. It is located in the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy, which lies in the valley between the Capitoline, Palatine and Esquiline hills. It was built by Emperor Maxentius in 307 CE in memory of his son Valerius Romulus. In 527 CE, it was converted to a church, the basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano, by Pope Felix IV. What is remarkable is that the bronze door is original and the lock still works.

(Best viewed full screen). The tourists are safe. Lions will not emerge from beneath the arena floor. However, when it was in use, the unfortunate gladiators and animals were brought up through trapdoors in the arena floor, a small portion of which has been reconstructed here (centre, on the far side).

Most people will recognise the remarkable Colosseum in Rome (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre or Anfiteatro Flavio). This is a panoramic internal view - 5 frame panorama - along an axis that shows the  central channel in the floodable underground structure called the hypogeum.

I don't see the sun

Went on the weekend to shoot what passes for sunset in a wholly east facing city but the clouds decided they wanted to assert their supremacy so no sunset that day. Still, Bradfield Park in Sydney is a lovely spot and I got to shoot some long exposure shots and cityscapes well past when it was completely dark and the city lit up. This shot was in what would have been blue hour had there been a real sunset.

Do you see what I see?

The sun struggles to break through the haze near sunset as seen from the top of the Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower of St Mark's, Venice, Italy), overlooking Piazza San Marco, more of Venice to the west, and the Adriatic Sea in the far distance. (Best seen full screen).

Hello, is it me you're looking for?

This intrepid gull came and sat next to us when we were at the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome and got a couple of chips as a reward! Taken in the blue hour when we were tired after a day of touristy things.

Have to point to the lyrics here in an Italian translation I found on the Internet. The bird is from Rome after all! ;')

Shooting the sun

Sunrise beach shoots are pretty popular. Most weekends when I go to the beach before first light, there are usually other photographers there too. This sunrise was no exception but there were only two other photographers at South Curl Curl. Was a lovely sunrise with beautiful golden hues colouring the sky and staining the dancing surf. (Best viewed full screen).

Two frame panorama, shot really rapidly one after another so that waves wouldn't move significantly and spoil continuity.

Too late for gondolas

The Grand Canal at San Marco in Venice, Italy. It was quite late at night and the family wasn't crazy enough to hang around on a cold winter night in the dark just to take some photographs. This long exposure shot was taken from one of the jetties used by gondolas but at this time there was no one else there. The Basilica Santa Maria della Salute can be seen in the central background.

35mm, f/11, 59sec, ISO 100.

Wonder if she was in there

(View full screen for best effect). People would recognise this building. The problem with photographs I have seen of Buckingham Palace is that the high fence in front is seen in those. There are also other things in the way, signs, guard boxes, etc. My aim was to get a panoramic photograph without the fence and other objects. So I poked the lens through the fence and took 6 frames, aiming at the same angle while walking parallel to the building. A few challenges in that - it was dark so had to shoot at f/4 and ISO 2500, so a few spots would be a bit OOF because of the wide aperture. As with the Waterloo Barracks at the Tower of London, stitching was a pain as pano software does not handle the changes in perspective correctly, so had to be done largely manually. Some people may notice the perspective challenges in such a wide building - one indication is the direction of the arches - both the smaller arches point right while the centre one points left. Just a function of where I was when that frame was shot.

If Stones Could Talk

The Bloody Tower is one of the 21 towers that make up the Tower of London complex. It was built in the early 1220's. In the image you can see its ancient porticullis, which is one of the very few surviving working ones left. The Bloody Tower is infamous for the mysterious murder of the two young Princes Edward V and his brother, Richard Duke of York, which is believed to have taken place there. They are believed to have been murdered by their uncle, Richard Duke of Gloucester, or his successor, Henry VII. According to legend, the Bloody Tower is haunted by the ghosts of the two princes. The Bloody Tower is believed to derive its present name from the suicide of Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland, within its walls, in 1585.

Waves crash like thunder

Sunrise at South Curl Curl Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches area. I thought the day was another washout as it was raining as I drove to Curl Curl before first light. Fortunately, the rain abated and left enough cloud to make the sky interesting but not cover the rising sun. The sea was in a petulant mood however, as if it was cheated out of a thorough shower, and was intent on trying to reach me where I was perched atop a rock just above water level.
