Green and tall

This long exposure night shot has been taken from an apartment in this year's "international best tall building" in central Sydney. This shot from One Central Park looks due east - behind the Mercure hotel is Central Station, with the many converging railway lines visible mid-ground right. I deliberately included and light-painted the greenery in the foreground because that is a highlight of the building. Plants grow all the way up the building, growing without soil on mesh-covered felt, and watered by mineralised water generated by the building's own water recycling plant. See this for more information: http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/nov/11/sydneys-one-central-park-wins-international-best-tall-building-award.

+Dusty Gedge You posted about this building, I think.

No lions here now

(Best viewed full screen). The tourists are safe. Lions will not emerge from beneath the arena floor. However, when it was in use, the unfortunate gladiators and animals were brought up through trapdoors in the arena floor, a small portion of which has been reconstructed here (centre, on the far side).

Most people will recognise the remarkable Colosseum in Rome (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre or Anfiteatro Flavio). This is a panoramic internal view - 5 frame panorama - along an axis that shows the  central channel in the floodable underground structure called the hypogeum.

Hello, is it me you're looking for?

This intrepid gull came and sat next to us when we were at the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome and got a couple of chips as a reward! Taken in the blue hour when we were tired after a day of touristy things.

Have to point to the lyrics here in an Italian translation I found on the Internet. The bird is from Rome after all! ;')

The Green Door

This is the Temple of Romulus. It is located in the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy, which lies in the valley between the Capitoline, Palatine and Esquiline hills. It was built by Emperor Maxentius in 307 CE in memory of his son Valerius Romulus. In 527 CE, it was converted to a church, the basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano, by Pope Felix IV. What is remarkable is that the bronze door is original and the lock still works.

I don't see the sun

Went on the weekend to shoot what passes for sunset in a wholly east facing city but the clouds decided they wanted to assert their supremacy so no sunset that day. Still, Bradfield Park in Sydney is a lovely spot and I got to shoot some long exposure shots and cityscapes well past when it was completely dark and the city lit up. This shot was in what would have been blue hour had there been a real sunset.

Do you see what I see?

The sun struggles to break through the haze near sunset as seen from the top of the Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower of St Mark's, Venice, Italy), overlooking Piazza San Marco, more of Venice to the west, and the Adriatic Sea in the far distance. (Best seen full screen).

The bird is from Rome after all! ;')

Shooting the sun

Sunrise beach shoots are pretty popular. Most weekends when I go to the beach before first light, there are usually other photographers there too. This sunrise was no exception but there were only two other photographers at South Curl Curl. Was a lovely sunrise with beautiful golden hues colouring the sky and staining the dancing surf. (Best viewed full screen).

Two frame panorama, shot really rapidly one after another so that waves wouldn't move significantly and spoil continuity.

The Grand Canal at San Marco in Venice, Italy. It was quite late at night and the family wasn't crazy enough to hang around on a cold winter night in the dark just to take some photographs. This long exposure shot was taken from one of the jetties used by gondolas but at this time there was no one else there. The Basilica Santa Maria della Salute can be seen in the central background.

There are also other things in the way, signs, guard boxes, etc. My aim was to get a panoramic photograph without the fence and other objects. So I poked the lens through the fence and took 6 frames, aiming at the same angle while walking parallel to the building. A few challenges in that - it was dark so had to shoot at f/4 and ISO 2500, so a few spots would be a bit OOF because of the wide aperture. Some people may notice the perspective challenges in such a wide building - one indication is the direction of the arches - both the smaller arches point right while the centre one points left. Just a function of where I was when that frame was shot.

If Stones Could Talk

The Bloody Tower is one of the 21 towers that make up the Tower of London complex. It was built in the early 1220's. In the image you can see its ancient porticullis, which is one of the very few surviving working ones left. The Bloody Tower is infamous for the mysterious murder of the two young Princes Edward V and his brother, Richard Duke of York, which is believed to have taken place there. They are believed to have been murdered by their uncle, Richard Duke of Gloucester, or his successor, Henry VII. According to legend, the Bloody Tower is haunted by the ghosts of the two princes. The Bloody Tower is believed to derive its present name from the suicide of Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland, within its walls, in 1585.

Waves crash like thunder

Sunrise at South Curl Curl Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches area. I thought the day was another washout as it was raining as I drove to Curl Curl before first light. Fortunately, the rain abated and left enough cloud to make the sky interesting but not cover the rising sun. The sea was in a petulant mood however, as if it was cheated out of a thorough shower, and was intent on trying to reach me where I was perched atop a rock just above water level.

There's a jewel in your crown

(Best viewed full screen)

This is a 4 frame panorama of the Jewel House / Waterloo Barracks within the Tower of London. The ground floor houses the precious crown jewels.

The frames were captured by walking in a straight line parallel to the building. Thought it was a good idea at the time as it would be a perpendicular shot for each frame rather than from a pivot point. However, it caused more trouble than it solved because of the strange perspective matching that this entailed. Stitching software could not handle it easily and a lot of tedious manual work was involved. A lot of vertical perspective and foreground correction was also required. Worked out quite well in the end. A very impressive building.

They're joining up with global organisations campaigning against the TPP. Together, they will tell the negotiators that more than two million people have signed a petition saying 'no deal' to the TPP.

The kicker? This sweeping deal still hasn't had any public or even parliamentary scrutiny, yet our Trade Minister can't wait to sign Australia up. We're running out of time to get our message heard and to stand up for our public interest. ___

Come, step into my bath with me

Three views of the Great Bath at the Roman Baths in Bath, England (too many baths there?). You may be able to spot the steam rising from the water as the baths are fed from hot springs. The Roman use of the baths date back from 60-70 CE and there was a Celt temple here prior to that. The level above the pillars including the statues were 18th century additions.

What do chickens have to do with monkeys?

Nothing, actually, but this monkey is made of chicken wire. The sculpture/model is one of several at the Tower of London to depict the days when it was a veritable menagerie (1210-1832). Animals were kept at the Tower for the entertainment and curiosity of the court. Everything from elephants to tigers, kangaroos and ostriches lived in what was known as the Royal Menagerie in terrible conditions. The keepers had no knowledge of these foreign beasts, did not know how to take care of them, they were fed the wrong things and as a result many died for a multitude of reasons.

Fire in the hole

I went to Collaroy Beach (Sydney Northern Beaches) yesterday before first light. When I was almost there, there was a fierce shower of rain and I thought the morning was washed out. I waited a while before venturing down to the beach till the rain abated sufficiently so I could photograph the sunrise. Actual sunrise was a non-event due to the heavy cloud cover but there was a brief explosion of colour before the sun disappeared behind the clouds. It is not very evident here but there was quite a swell and I was right in the middle of the waves on this rock shelf and was completely soaked. Always worth it, however - being out there that early is always magical.

Some things stand still

The Pantheon in Rome, Italy, was built by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) and rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian about 126 AD. Two thousand years after it was built, it is the best preserved building from ancient Rome. It has been in continuous use throughout its history, and since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a church dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs" (Info from Wikipedia).

It is nearly impossible to avoid having a whole heap of tourists in frame here even though we went there quite late at night. Perhaps if I had a tripod when I went there, I could have done a median in post to get rid of them.

Handheld, 16mm, f/11, 1/8sec, ISO 12800.

For whom the bell tolls

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee (John Donne).

Another few steps, another church

Sant'Andrea della Valle is a 17th century church in Rome. Photographed across from the main entrance on the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The first act of Tosca, the opera by Puccini, is set in this church. This building may be relatively unimportant in a city where one may think every second building is a major church, but sizewise it is a huge church.

Taken within the first few hours after landing in Rome, I'd been suitably terrified by posts in TripAdvisor, etc that this was a city full of miscreants whose only aim was to snatch my precious camera and lenses, and I stood there on this major street with my backpack held tight against me and camera tethered tight to my wrist. Maybe it was like Y2K and my precautions worked, but fortunately nothing happened in the many days we were in Italy, nor in Spain after that.

Truly baroque

It is an indicator of the sheer number of really old and significant buildings or artefacts there are in most of "old Europe" that one just passes by, sees them and goes on without at the time realising that any particular one is significant. We passed this building in Rome on our first evening there while on the hunt for a place to have dinner, and I photographed it 'on the run'.

It was only when I later looked this one up (courtesy of Wikipedia), I found that this building is the Church of the Gesù (officially Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù all'Argentina), the mother church of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. First conceived in 1551 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, and built in 1568, it was funded by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, grandson of Pope Paul III, the pope who had authorised the foundingo... more »

Also interesting to me because of the Indian connection, the Saint Francis Xavier Chapel contained here conserves part of the saint's right arm (by which he baptised 300,000 people), his other remains are interred in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, India.___

The place has its fans

This two frame vertorama (best seen full screen) shows the inside of Bath Abbey, (Bath, England) looking eastward towards the choir, the altar and stained glass above it. What is also very prominent is a great feature of the abbey - the fan vaulted ceiling that covers all 5 bays of the nave. The abbey has 52 windows and a lot of stained glass, some of which can be seen in this frame.

The abbey, which was originally a Benedictine monastery, was originally built in the 7th century, and then essentially rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries.

Handheld, 16mm, f/5.6, 1/15sec, ISO 3600.

Water is best

The Rebecca Fountain, on the north side of Bath Abbey, Bath, England, is a marble drinking fountain dating from 1861. The fountain depicts a life-size female figure pouring water from an urn into a bowl with the inscriptions "take the water of life freely" and "water is best". It was erected by the Bath Temperance Association to give people the option of water rather than alcohol. ;)

Reach the heights

(Best viewed full screen). This is the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Bath, England, commonly known as Bath Abbey. It dates back to the 7th century and was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries. This is the Abbey as viewed from the west. It is beautiful outside and inside. You can see the angels climbing Jacob's ladder on both sides of the central stained glass.

3 frames bracketed 2EV apart blended together. Taken from ground level relatively close to the building as there isn't much room without the side structures intruding to the sides, and hence some major work in vertical perspective correction.

Makes you despair. In the link you have people doing advanced things that are benefiting the environment while our merry PM and his band of far-right idiots are busy dismantling what little environmentally friendly technology we had deployed. #auspol

Unbe-reef-able

This is a part of Long Reef that is closer to Collaroy Beach (Sydney Northern Beaches). In this LE shot, you can see that water is streaming off the reef as the tide recedes. I took a succession of LE shots at this spot and was very surprised to see on my computer that many of the "things" on the rocks that I had taken for seaweed/algae were actually moving creatures as I could see from successive frames. The big jagged rocks in the forground appear to have fallen from the cliff that loomed behind me with a helpful "Beware falling rocks" sign placed nearby!

I see yellow

A section of Long Reef when the tide is going out, exposing the red rock typical to that area, and lots of marine algae on the reef. Many of Sydney's Northern Beaches suburbs visible in the background. Shot just after sunrise. 23mm, f/11, 14sec, Lee Big Stopper, Formatt-Hitech 0.9 Reverse GND.

Emerging from the waves

Went to Long Reef at first light today and stood there observing the sunrise as the sun, and the reef, rose from the waters. The reef is covered with water at high tide and cannot be accessed. It lies between Dee Why and Collaroy Beaches in Sydney's Northern Beaches area and is a protected aquatic reserve. When I went there, the water was receding but was still a little over ankle high. You can see the darker open sea in the photograph where the reef ends. Was fascinated by the aquatic life that was being revealed as the water receded. By the time I left, a lot of the red rock was visible, covered in many parts by marine algae / seaweed, and water birds came along for the feast that followed.

Rock factory

Another photograph of the fascinating rock wear in the intertidal zone between North Era Beach and South Era Beach in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. I don't know how the rock developed these patterns but (pure speculation) perhaps the water that remains here after the tide goes down gets concentrated in the hot sun and the concentrated salt solution corrodes the rock more. Lots of life in these pools.

Such is life

Where I was standing for this photograph is in the intertidal zone between South Era Beach and North Era Beach in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. The area is covered with water at high tide but at low tide is regularly doused with water from large waves that flows through the area, with the excess flowing back into the sea, but it keeps the place wet with fresh sea water constantly. This was a fascinating place teeming with life. Besides the copious growth of the marine algae Hormosira banksii you see in the foreground, the pools were full of so many forms of life such as seaweeds, sea grasses, molluscs (you can see many on the rocks in the photo), slugs, colourful fish, crabs, anemone, starfish, etc. The wear patterns of the rocks were fascinating too, not so much in this photo but in many other spots. Paving from nature

Came across fantastic natural "paving" created by nature through wearing of the rock in the intertidal area of South Era Beach in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney.
