Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today's guitarists. Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed's vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist. First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The most impressive thing about Reed's technique, though, is that it doesn't draw attention to itself. His compositions are far from abstract virtuosic displays; even without lyrics he creates vivid, engrossing scenes. Sometimes the effect is almost onomatopoetic. Reed generates visual stimuli with every tweak of his instrument, thus augmenting his wordless compositions with an aura of the poetic. Each tune is a story in itself with a potent, cinematic atmosphere and an almost tangible thread of communication between Preston Reed and the listener. Reed's entry into this guitar odyssey was inauspicious enough, his path thereafter largely self-discovered. A few chords learned from his guitar playing father, a brief, very brief, flirtation with the ukulele, clandestine practice sessions of his favourite Beatles and Stones songs on dad's guitar .... and then a too-strict classical guitar teacher led to premature retirement. At 16, however, Reed heard Jefferson Airplane's rootsy blues offshoot, Hot Tuna. His interest was rekindled big time. Acoustic guitar heroes John Fahey and Leo Kottke were studied, their styles absorbed but not imitated, and at this point things really begin to get interesting because, at 17, Reed, by now precociously proficient, played his first live gig, supporting beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute. Just getting on a train from his native Armonk in New York State to Washington was a cool adventure. And it was just the first of many, not least of which was the one which resulted from his signing his first deal with a major record company, MCA, through the auspices of his friend, country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Reed pushed himself to go beyond the standard fingerpicking styles he'd perfected. Red Wine Plum Compote, Whipped Creme Fraiche

Trying another chocolate cake recipe, looking for a simple but fabulous cake that I can play with and change just by what I add to the plate.

This may be it. I've only made it once, will have to make a number of times to give it that place in my recipes, highly possible that this is the one.

A glut of plums (4 varieties) some overripe and needing to be used before they go off. A mixture of red wine, honey, cardamom and 4 kinds of plums. Reduced to thicken, son thinks it needs more honey, a little tart for him.

Sweetened with just a tich of sugar, whipped like whipping cream.

Chanterelle Pork Chop

White Wine Pan Sauce, Ribbon Zucchini Salad, French Fingerling Oven Fries

It's been far too long since I've eaten/cooked a lovely pork chop. This will definitely be happening again, first I do have to visit Acme Meats again. No problem with that. The addition of Chanterelles from Saskatchewan ( +Warren Lissel, you've been keeping these little gems for yourself?). The best chanterelles I've eaten since Europe.

A little white wine added to the pan, a little cold butter (after reducing the white wine pan sauce) to make a shiny sauce (everyone knows shiny rocks).

French fingerling oven fries, easy, minimal mess. My son just had to point out, technically roasted potatoes. I used all my cognitive dissonance to deny this fact and claim fries!!!

Fungus on Toast

What did you have for dinner last night?

A parasitic fungus, why?

Lobster mushrooms & Berkshire bacon on arugula, diijon mustard and toast.

I don't think you mean what you think it means. I learned this last night while doing a little more research on Lobster mushrooms.

Via: Wiki: The Lobster mushroom, Hypomyces lactifluorum, contrary to its common name, is not a mushroom, but rather a parasitic ascomycete fungus that grows on certain species of mushrooms, turning them a reddish orange color that resembles the outer shell of a cooked lobster.

Sauteed with a little bacon, pan deglazed with some white wine. Such a delicious parasitic fungus.

Corn in the background with some Habanero chili salt, was delicious also.

Monday Meal

Pasta, Hot Italian Sausage, Corn Off The Cob, Cherry Tomatoes

Yes, that glut of tomatoes happened again, I keep my eyes on those suckers. I haven't actually bought any in a couple of weeks as I've been harvesting from my plants. I have been watching to make certain the ones I did by didn't go fuzzy. They were beginning to look suspect.

Hot Italian sausage from the Italian Center, sold without casings. Love that! Sauteed with a little onion and garlic, add tomatoes, add corn, add a la dente pasta, finish with a heaping handful of Italian parsley.

Pasta is a perennial favourite of my son's. He was definitely happy with dinner.

Chipotle Peach Branch BBQ Sauce, Seared White Peaches, Alberta Pork Loin

If you don't like meat and fruit, just move on....

I happen to adore meat and fruit, I'm the one cooking so. I also have a few containers of this BBQ sauce in the freezer now. It was supposed to have bourbon, I didn't have any (not to self, acquire for cooking with), so substitution time. Spicy, sweet, tart very delicious.

Son wasn't so enamoured, mind you he's not a meat & fruit fan. Oh well.

Pancakes and Berkshire Bacon Ends

Not a lot of effort went into this Sunday Brunch. Golden Forest Grains Pancake mix (A wonderful mix of freshly milled wheat flours along with flaked Oats and organic Golden Flax. ), grown less than 20 minutes from where I live. Add eggs, milk and bacon fat, done. The resulting pancakes are super tasty, son thought there was too many grains involved. Don't care, they are easy to make.

A triple batch of Strawberry Ketchup is finished, some in the fridge, the rest in the freezer.

Now to make some BBQ sauce, new recipe, hoping it turns out well. Peach based.

Rachid Nekkaz, 38, a real-estate businessman based in Paris, traveled to Belgium on Wednesday to pay 100 euros for two women fined in the first case in the country since the law against head coverings was adopted there. He's set aside a million euro of his own money to pay the fines of women criminalized for wearing head and face coverings.

The last of the season, I'm finished making them. I think I've made somewhere in the vicinity of 30 jars this year. The majority were 1 litre with only 5 (here) of the 500 ml.

Two of the large jars have a quartered jalapeno in them, hoping for a nice heat.

They are all now upside down on a clean white dish towel, checking the seal.

Now, peaches.....

Aged Cheddar Grilled Cheese

Tomato Jam, Orange Zinger Cherry Tomatoes (from my planter), Kosher Style Dills

Dinner was simple last night, old school style grilled cheese, just with cheese and homemade bread. Made up for it with sides, I have to finagle the recipe for the tomato jam from someone....

The Orange Zinger Cheery tomatoes are yummy! My other tomatoes have taken a hit from snails, I'm picking what I can and leaving the rest to be devoured. Sharing is caring.

Making a huge batch of kosher dills today, everything needed finally together to get at it. Some for gifting, some for the winter. Another batch of homemade pickling spice was required. Will be a busy afternoon.

Lemon Za'atar Chicken Wings

Cumin Roasted Eggplant Wedges

Trying a new eggplant recipe, similar to one I did a little while ago. I think I like the other one better, though I do thing the cumin sprinkled on the roasted eggplant is fabulous (noted and filed). I have leftover eggplant which will be morphing into some kind of pita wrap for lunch (soon, soon).

The rub for the chicken wings needed more lemon, some chili (Maras/Aleppo). Easily tweaked the next time I make chicken.

Bacon Sprinkles, Shiitake Mushrooms, Arugula, Gremolata, Pickled Red Onions

Weirdly enough this worked beautifully, the original intention was for an egg with a runny yolk. Ooops, broken yolk when cracking the egg into the pan, roll with it.

When the son says it was good, you know most people would enjoy this.

An absolutely wonderful service offered that is offered to various organizations as a community building effort to show appreciation to people that help others.

The other offering was a veggie burger, tempting but....

All of the people working the truck volunteer their time going around the city (and beyond), bringing delicious food to other.

Lots of fun, the people in our Day program were thrilled. Hopefully we'll see OJ's Heart Cart again next year.

Yes, I said seedless Concord style grapes, only due to brain fart and not remembering what they are called (I'll remedy that on Saturday).

Just didn't feel like cooking last night, probably the heat. A lighter, refreshing, delicious fruit and cheese plate instead.

The Oro Rosso cheese was discovered at the Italian Center on Saturday, new to them, new to me.

These cheese are placed in barrels and covered with a ruby sweet wine native to the Veneto region and left for about 30 days. Once removed they are covered with blueberries, blackberries, currants (also called 'red gold' for its colour and rarity) and left standing for maturing.

Rough Mash, Sauteed Green Beans, Duo Cucumber Salad with Dijon Vinaigrette

Yes, I know I should blanch my green beans before sauteing to keep them all pretty green. All that does is make more dishes for me to wash (no dishwasher), so no!

I might have to invest in a truffle shaver, with actually having access to truffles for a somewhat reasonable price. I just can't slice them thin enough, which wastes, makes them go less further.

Truffles slid under chicken skin, Ruby port added and a quick, high heat roast. Juices into a pan, add cream, reduce, taste, adjust seasonings.

The potatoes were not peeled. French fingerlings, there is no point peeling them as the skins are super thin and sweet. Made for a lovely rough mash.

The cucumbers taste like a young, tender, delicious baby cucumber. They look funky cool.

Had a little talk with my fruit people. I commented that I'd never seen either variety of pear before. I learned the only reason we were seeing these varieties here was that there was a slight bit of hail damage and the pears were no longer suitable for export.

It's wrong of me but I hope there are light hail storms every year, not enough to severely damage the crop, just enough that these pears make it our way again.

Skirt Steak Tacos

Alberta Skirt Steak, Seared Onions, Lime Avocado, Tomatoes, Pickled Onions/Jalapenos, Fresh Lime, Cilantro

Alberta skirt steak marinated in ancho chili & oregano, quickly sauteed. Avocado mashed with fresh lime juice & salt, simple. Too lazy to make salsa, sliced tomatoes it was. A jar of pickled onions, a jar of pickled jalapenos, necessities in the fridge, always.

Health scare averted, false positive test for lupus made for a stressful couple of weeks. Hypothyroidism is out of control again (explains tired, hurting, fog, various other complaints), working on getting under control again. Unbelievably happy it wasn't lupus.

Trying another chocolate cake recipe, looking for a simple but fabulous cake that I can play with and change just by what I add to the plate.

This may be it. I've only made it once, will have to make a number of times to give it that place in my recipes, highly possible that this is the one.

A glut of plums (4 varieties) some overripe and needing to be used before they go off. A mixture of red wine, honey, cardamom and 4 kinds of plums. Reduced to thicken, son thinks it needs more honey, a little tart for him.

Sweetened with just a tich of sugar, whipped like whipping cream.
