Went and saw the 8:30am 3D showing at the only movie theater around I still acknowledge, Century 16 (huge leather recliners FTW!).

Verdict: It's good. Lots of fun, exciting space battles, engaging characters. Somebody buy Justin Lin a level.

3D: The 3D effects weren't super "in your face", just added depth and took away contrast. There were a few scenes where the loss of contrast really showed, but for the most part it was what I like out of a 3D movie: I want to occasionally forget that it's in 3D but add depth to the picture.

Cinematography: Lots of flying and twisting and turning and spinning and scenes with the camera tilted. It really works well, though, to give you the three-dimensional "there is no up" feel of space.

Effects: They really did a beautiful job creating the worlds the movie takes... more »

An interesting read. The current political effects of this are just the tip of the iceberg. Countries are still feeling out the natural limits of where this aspect of espionage lies.

Invasive species have been a tremendous problem around the world. When a species arrives in a brand-new ecosystem and thrives, most often there isn't a network of other species already in place to integrate with it: so the species might simply choke off competitors who haven't evolved to deal with it (e.g. kudzu), eat all the food and cause other species to starve (e.g. rabbits), or dump so many nutrients into the river that they cause massive algae blooms, while being a perpetual risk for killing people (e.g. hippos).

If your first response to that was "wait, invasive hippos?" then you're probably not alone. Apparently, Pablo Escobar had quite a number on his estate, and when he was gunned down in 1993, nobody really knew what to do about them. So they're still there, and doing what hippopotami do -- namely, make more hippopotami. And produce copious quantities of feces.

Unlike most invasive species, this problem is still contained enough that it could be stopped if people decided to. (The recommended way to stop invasive hippopotami is with high-caliber ranged weapons, in case you're wondering.) However, it isn't clear that people do; the locals apparently file them under "charismatic megafauna" and kind of like having them around.

That said, this opinion is likely to change as they increase in number; hippos are generally considered to be the deadliest animals in Africa, killing nearly 3,000 people a year. While they're vegetarian, they're very large, and extremely ornery. They frequently charge and attack boats, destroy crops, and are well-known for something technically known as "projectile pooping."

In the scope of the problems facing the world right now, a few dozen hippos are probably not the biggest thing we need to be concerned about. But it's nice to think about some kind of potential apocalypse that doesn't involve public officials, for a change.

Today's the birthday of Rosalind Franklin, the scientist (chemist and X-ray crystallographer) whose research led to the discovery of the structure of DNA. But that wasn't all. After finishing her work on DNA, went to work researching the molecular structures of viruses, and much of her ground-breaking work has led to the advances in the anti-viral therapies we have today.

I love this print of Rosalind Franklin looking through her microscope by Michelle Tavares of LunaReef, featured in a She's Crafty post a while back: http://buff.ly/29YwFQN

Cinematography: Lots of flying and twisting and turning and spinning and scenes with the camera tilted. It really works well, though, to give you the three-dimensional "there is no up" feel of space.

Effects: They really did a beautiful job creating the worlds the movie takes place on. Little details like floating spores and water effects are really making movies like this set in alien worlds start to look more spectacular.

Caveats: Since this is a Star Trek movie I feel the need to point out that it doesn't take itself as seriously as some fans might like. There is one plot element that I won't spoil here in particular during the climax of the movie that I'm sure some people will scoff at and let it ruin the movie for them.

Characters: Still the same Star Trek characters you expect. Bones really stands out in his role, and Spock is really starting to grow on me. The interplay between the two characters is great. Kirk's face is just as punchable. There were a few touching nods to the death of Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Jayla makes for an interesting new character, and Kraall is satisfyingly hateable, though I don't really empathize with him much.___

A drug-sniffing dog “jumped on her” at the checkpoint, according to today’s report. Because we trust dogs more than citizens, and because you have basically no rights at the border (and few anywhere else), that was apparently good enough to warrant a cavity search.

The agents dragged her away in handcuffs to the University Medical Center of El Paso, which is hopefully now sufficiently ashamed that it cooperated in subjecting her to a six-hour search involving “an observed bowel movement, a CT scan and vaginal exams”—plural—but finding no drugs at all.
