Finally the mornings are starting to come around to being enjoyable! Getting out at the first light of the day let's you grab the action before everything hides away from the day's heat. Now that the skies are starting to cooperate and not have a oppressive layer of crap blocking the sun, I don't have that morning mental battle of arguing with myself if it is worth getting up so early

Least Tern chick working to get the attention of its parents coming in with a fish. Caught this little one on first trip to Bolsa Chica and miss focused through the fence when its parent dropped in to feed. Went back the next day and it had already fledged

Nice undercarriage!
This Cooper's Hawk popped up on me early last month as I wasn't able to get focus until it was soaring basically right-above-my-head (You know, those times you whisper a prayer (don't poop, don't poop, don't POOP! please)

P-51B Mustang
Planes of Fame Living History Flying Day

Continuing to dig into an other photographic outlet, the first Saturday of the month I've started to visit on the days the planes will go up for a flight demo, and listen to the presentations where those that flew these planes are being brought in to talk about their experiences while they still can.

Took more statics than I should have,  but the fun is always in the flight shots.  Tried reducing shutter down to 1/160 for this run, and my hit rate suffered, but still came away with a handful.  A couple still made it worth it, but definitely need to continue my skills planning at that low a shutter speed.

This photo has more impact if you have "Flight of the Valkyries" humming thorough your head.

Anna's Hummingbird

Caught this one moment out of a ton of shots where I was tracking this guy going after all the midges in the air. Not the best light for detail, but cool never-the-less (I think).

All photo shot info is in the photo details.

A low flying Caspian Tern ( I think) as it skims over the water in dawn light. I always enjoy the ones that I get when I am panning with a slow shutter speed in the morning - I may toss hundreds out, but just having one makes the difference.

Info on the click in the photo details

Black Skimmer -

These guys are hard to catch this time of year in the Sanctuary as they get up with the sun and hang around for an hour grabbing a drink/wash int he ponds before they head out to the open oceans. A lot of time the sun just doesn't hit a point where you have enough to get decent clicks of these guys in action.

This past weekend was an exception and I came back with far more images on a card than I would care to admit, but had some great shots of golden light and reflections on these guys.

Photo specific information is you want to know is in the photo details.

A jealous mate. This was one of many that came out on this day as the mated pairs were all in a routine of the make fishing, and then switching the fish between mates for 10-15 before they got around to eating. It was almost a half-hearted game of "keep away"

Finally! That crappy, depressing, soul draining, bad light giving June Gloom seems to have moved on. Granted it was replaced with triple-digit temperatures!

But hey! who the hell cares! You get out when you can and take away what you can on every click. This weekend made up for previous weeks when you didn't see the sun until 4PM.

The Black Skimmers came back and hung around, granted in lesser numbers from years before, but they did come back to put on their shows before the day got too hot for them to do much of anything. The Grebes that stayed were well into "playful" mode of their yearly mating where one will catch a fish and they pass it back and forth between each other.

It was great to have the switch made into the summer that means wildlife photography is back on track - as long as the animals still come around.

I am not sure if it is me finding a new outlet since wildlife in the area has shifted due the drought and offering less and less to capture with a click, or if I have just been watching too many of Moose/Jake Peterson's videos and blogs that I caught a new bug

SBD-5 Dauntless from Plane of Fame Living History Flying day

And I (re)learned that it is a bitch and a half trying to photograph when the subject and the background are the same color range. A blue plane on a blue sky. Many a cuss word was uttered this day

Everything from the day can be read/seen here:

a brief few of the shots that I came back with from #planesoffame2016  Being out in SoCal for 6 years now, I had always heard of the Air Show in Chino, but it never registered until this year when they were advertising it with the 75 anniversary (not to the day) of Pearl Harbor.

It was a great, enjoyable, long, tiring, fun day. The only downside was not realizing we had to bring our own seat, so it was 9 hours straight on feet!

Double-crested Cormorant with mating plumage

Really been tough this month with wildlife, the usually suspects just aren't coming back to the area.  Not sure if it is a El nino thing, or just climate in general.... but it is a shame that it is at a point I am starting to ask if it is worth getting out at sunrise any more.  Just not a lot around to drive me out of bed at the moment....

Finally bit the bullet mid last year and converted a spare body over to dedicated IR.  Chose the Enhanced IR (665nm) option, as I can then put a 72 filter on it and not have too much difference in the exposure times.

Looking forward to Spring coming in full force where I have days with some clouds and lots of sun.  Been one or the other (full sun no clouds or mostly cloudy) lately, but there is always hope of tomorrow.

It has been some slow action months at the Sanctuary.  Looking back at the catalog from the past two years, there is definitely a decrease in activity.  With the CA drought conditions, the water just isn't at the old levels and a lot of areas have stated to die off and not able to support the fish counts as in the past.  You can see the climate changes affecting this area as numbers and types of species are just not there to capture as they were in the recent past.

Downy Woodpecker

It is always nice when they land right in front of you on a tree - you just have to wait around for them to clear all the smaller branches that might get in the way between you and it.

Something different than normal - a weekend spent at a local Civil War re-enactment day. Some exercises in trying to stretch time, and the work at catching "the moment" when you see the firearms shooting

Back to the Sanctuary next weekend!

While the weather was not the best this weekend (Fog started off both days, with Sunday being dense until lunch time), it was nice to have something other than great conditions to force me to think on how I could come away with anything.

I have a love/fascination/obsession with trying to capture raptors as they are coming in the perch, or just having launched - to me they make an excellent 'in action' shot and something different than a normal specimen shot.

The best three from this past weekend - happy to finally get the Osprey on the right side of me to the sun, and doing more than just perching.  The Downy Woodpecker was a great experience as I was able to creep up on it while it was digging for grubs to get the shot you see without cropping at 400mm

A longer weekend meant getting out a bit more with the camera, and to some other places than normal.

A hopeful spectacular sunset at the beach didn't work out as hoped, but taking advantage of what was there salvaged the outing.

Visits to the Sanctuary, although quiet as usually expected this time of year, did produce some good clicks.

2) Any posted photo must be of a free/wild animal.  Pictures from zoos, aquariums, enclosures or of domestic animals will be removed without comment.
3) YouTube videos, gifs or other animated postings will be removed without comment.  Postings of this type lead to being blocked.

Community Guidelines - updated

Thank you for joining us in sharing your wildlife photos!  To ensure a great experience for everyone, we wanted to put some guidelines out for those of you past of the community to be aware of as you post in this community:

1) Post you own original wildlife (animals, birds, insects) photos!  Anything not your own photo will be removed without comment and lead to being blocked.
2) Any posted photo must be of a free/wild animal.  Pictures from zoos, aquariums, enclosures or of domestic animals will be removed without comment.
3) YouTube videos, gifs or other animated postings will be removed without comment.  Postings of this type lead to being blocked.
4) To ensure everyone has an opportunity for their posts to be seen:  Please do not post more than 3 photos per day (this counts from within albums as well). Excessive posting may also result in being blocked without comment.
5) Links to blogs or other outside posts (500px, Flickr) are fine if they are clearly about wildlife.  If you are posting a photo from an outside photo sharing site, please make sure the thumbnail is the the focus on not just a link.  While we prefer photos posted within G+, we can understand wanting to link from another online portfolio.
6) Photos that are not relevant to wildlife / blog links that show no clear evidence of being relevant to wildlife will be blocked.  Basically, post spam = get blocked.
7) Please make sure the wildlife in your photo can be seen.  Dots of ducks in a photo of a mountain and lake is not wildlife photography - it is landscape photography that has some small animals in it.  Saying they are there does not compensate for the lack of visibility of the wildlife.

Other things to consider:
a) It appears that one of the things likely to get your posts marked as possible spam is posting multiple images to a community (single or multiple) within a short period of time. If you're one that falls into this automatic detention from Google: Your posts may not immediately show up.  A moderator would have to approve the photos to be shown.  No harm done; just give the moderators some time to get to reviewing any posts marked as spam.
b) While posting an album is acceptable, be aware that posting a single photo will garner you more views and interactions.
c) Please be aware of the sections for the community and post to the right area.  While posting in the wrong community is not an issue in a single instance and a moderator may relocate to the correct area, please be aware that continued mis-postings may result in being considered spam.
d) Post Your Photos here!: Self-explanatory we would think.  All photos and albums would be posted into this section.
e) Help with ID: Post photos here when you are in need of identifying your wildlife subject.  If someone can help we will try. The guidelines of non-caged or domestic animals still applied to this category
f) Tips:  Anything you would like to share around wildlife photography?  Put it here! Original work guideline still applies
g) Discussion:  This is an area for any wildlife discussion.  Please keep the postings on topic and the discussion civil and respectful.  Not being either will result in being blocked.
h) Community Standards - NO PHOTOS:  This area is where you will see the latest information on community standards.  It is where this is being read from.  If you have a question on interaction from within the community, it would be posted here.  Any post that is not relavent in this section will be removed without comment.

Enjoy everyone!___

Best of the weekend: Sometimes it is nice to have those days where the clouds aren't playing around with light and you can use everything the sun throws out to capture the local wildlife.  Before the winds kicked up later in the morning, the water was an excellent source of reflections.

Usually going through what I have taken over a weekend to show as 'best' is a personal choice on what to share, but this week it was flat easy.  Being it good or bad, this shot defaulted to the best from the weekend as it was the only one that resulted from the one outing.  The weather wasn't the best with bald grey skies meaning most everything was either backlight like crazy, or in shadow with no detail.

Only at the end of my morning did the light start to balance out to pull anything out of what was around.  Which in all honestly wasn't that much to begin with.
