It's pretty hard to talk about the all-new Lexus IS300h without using the word 'alternative'. Not alternative as in 'left-field' or 'edgy' or 'your mum wouldn't get it' – it most definitely isn't those things. But alternative as in alternative to a BMW 3-Series. Alternative to an Audi A4. Alternative to what almost everyone else chooses when spending £30k on a compact-ish four-door: a German two-litre diesel.

So is the new Lexus IS300h finally a viable alternative? Full story at the link...

This is the brand new BMW M5. Technically, technically, that statement is correct. But before you go scurrying off into the world shouting it from the rooftops, brace yourself: it's just a facelift. Well, a facelift and some extra power, courtesy of something called a ‘Competition Pack'.

To coincide with the standard 5-Series facelift and mid-life refresh, BMW has treated The Best Super Saloon in The World to a series of tweaks to keep it on the boil...

There's nothing like a bit of needle from the opposition. In the face of the astounding outputs now announced by the rivals McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, Porsche has found some more poke from the race-bred V8 engine in the 918 Spyder. It has also juiced-up the electrical systems. Result, it's now rated at a total 887bhp, almost 100bhp up from the original expectation.

Paul Horrell reports from the driving seat of the 887bhp hybrid hypercar for the first time at the link...

There’s a squeak from the corner of the pit garage, the steady, repetitive squeak of a trolley wheel, and a chunky mechanic hoves into view bearing the car’s final component on a porter’s cart: The Stig. Man in white meets car in yellow. Nothing. Not a flicker. It’s only when the fat wheel jackets are removed and the car is lowered to the polished floor that Stig comes to life. He climbs abruptly aboard, and there’s an instant wumpf as eight cylinders pound into life. He’s off. As the long bonnet noses out into the sunshine at Paul Ricard, I swear I see a white hand stroke the black Alcantara steering wheel...

The Stig. The mad Mercedes SLS Black. Can you guess what happened next? Full story at the link...

‘Mad' Mike Whiddett isn't really mad, though judging by the video at the link, you'd be correct in assuming some parts of his anatomy are hewn from rock. He's just released a little video detailing his run along the highest paved roadway in New Zealand, and it's quite something.

Sometimes, just sometimes, car manufacturers put down their Spreadsheet Of Global Domination, quiet their thirst for business catchphrases like ‘market penetration', and have a little playtime at work. And judging by the 500bhp sketch you see above, VW likes to play hard.

It's the Design Vision GTI, a racing concept penned under the ‘watchful eye' of VW design chief Klaus Bischoff, designed to show off a) another horrendously powerful über-Golf, and b) how the seventh-generation GTI could translate as a racer. Answer? Very ruddy well...

Micro Machines. We thought their solitary function on this Earth was the provision of extravagant foot pain. But this brilliantly Russ Meyerish car chase animation from Stoopid Buddy Stoodies proves they're capable of great things.

As are SBS, come to think of it. This video is 100 per cent hand-crafted stop-motion animation, and shot 99 per cent in camera. Camera! The boys even made teeny little rigs (watch till the end - s'worth it).

Watch at the link. But be warned: scenes of clay violence may disturb some viewers.

It's a big fast hairpin, but a hairpin nonetheless. When I come out of it and floor the thing, the supercharged 5.0 V8 doesn't have much trouble batting us up to about 135mph before the next corner. They say it'll do 0-60 in less than 5.0 seconds, too. Lighter weight certainly has its advantages.

In fact, for this new Range Rover Sport, they've carved 420kg out when compared to an old one with equivalent engine. Mainly by shifting to an aluminium body, and new suspension related to what's under the new Range Rover...

In 1923, Cheshire-born mountaineer and explorer George Mallory was asked by a New York Times reporter why he was bothering to attempt climbing Mount Everest. It seemed like such an impossible task that it could only end in disaster, he had to hear why Mallory and his team were even thinking of doing such a ridiculous thing. "Why?" said Mallory fixing his steely gaze on the writer. "Because it's there."

Ninety years to the day, I'm sitting in a Cheshire-built Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible, engine wuffling away like a contented dray horse, at the end of a 2.9-mile runway in the high Californian desert, seconds away from trying something similarly questionable. Seeing how fast you can go in a four-seat convertible with the roof down. Why? Because I can.

Hammond drives the icons: TVR Sagaris

It looks like a rainy-day doodle in a schoolbook, it takes 20 minutes to get into it because the door button is hidden under the mirror, and, when you finally do enter, the interior smells like a glue-sniffer's pocket; yup, it's definitely a TVR.

The Sagaris was one of the last cars the company made as it writhed and wrestled through its death throes before it finally slithered under last year, taking down with it a million jokes about reliability, names and Blackpool. Tricky, then, to recommend it, this car made by a now defunct company called Trevor. Tricky, maybe, but certainly not crazy. For one thing, look at it... just look. It's fabulous...

This isn't a real Ferrari LaFerrari painted up in Gulf livery. It is a RENDERED Ferrari LaFerrari photoshopped in the most iconic racing livery known to man: you're talking Ford GT40s, Porsche 917s, Aston Le Mans racers and Steve McQueen.

It has come from the mind of 19 year-old self-confessed ‘auto enthusiast' Pratyush, who saw pictures of the rendered Audi RS7 Group B rally car and the ‘shopped 1945 Bugatti Veyron/VW Beetle on TopGear.com a while back, and got inspired.

And thus, he decided to decorate Ferrari's latest pony in the blue and orange of legend. He's also strapped on some carbon fibre spoilers and a new airflow director up front, to make it racy. Vroom vroom, Internet...

Few who enter the famed Pikes Peak hill climb wear their history quite like Peugeot. Winner in 1988 and 1989, its 405 was immortalised in the classic Climb Dance short film with Ari Vatanen.

The fear of being unceremoniously and painfully jettisoned into a black chasm of death by a leather-sandaled foot is currently taking up some of my thought process. I am sitting with Gerard Butler, King Leonidas himself, ready to talk all things Top Gear. And when I ask if he considers himself a petrolhead, he informs me that he doesn't really know anything about cars.

"I don't even know what a petrolhead is". So, I respond, you're not really into your cars then?

"No."

There is a famous wine-growing estate in Saint-Emillion in France, where this, the Citroen Wild Rubis concept, has made its debut. Clearly, it has been sampling far too much of the Cheval Blanc chateau's produce. Just look at how purple it is.

And what it is is a future glimpse at how a DS-badged Citroen SUV could look. And doesn't it look funky? Inebriation aside, it takes the genes of Citroen's cool DS line and transposes it onto a body measuring up roughly the same size as a BMW X5, if a little shorter in height...

This is the new Maserati Ghibli. And for the first time ever, it's available as a diesel. Wait, what?

A Maserati that suckles from the black pump? Yep. And there's one reason for it: sales. Maserati wants to sell 50,000 cars by 2015, a big ask considering the company currently sells 7,000 models every year. This new Ghibli then - set to battle the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes CLS and Jaguar XF - has a lot of responsibility on its svelte shoulders.

For decades, there has been a horrible chasm in the motoring world that needed to be filled: the space between the car and furniture. Thankfully, Renault - with the help of British designer Ross Lovegrove - says it has linked these two worlds with the Renault Twin'Z.

The aim was to "break down the boundaries between the world of an object whose calling is to be in movement - the automobile - and that of furniture." We were expecting a V8 powered La-Z-Boy with a limitied-slip-differential, but apparently an electric city car concept is the answer...

You may think that car design involves pens and paper. But when you're designing a McLaren P1, that isn't always the case. "See the little shapes behind the front wheel?" says Frank Stephenson, the company's design chief. "We didn't draw those - they came out of a computer. We just refined them and made them look sexier."

In Russia, you don't take your car on the mud - the mud... takes your car. And a massive off-road tractor. And a full-track bulldozer thing...

Yep, this is a Nissan Patrol getting very stuck somewhere in Russia. And when an off-road tractor (which looks a lot like it saw service on a Bond villain's island, circa 1965) comes to its aid, it also gets stuck. So a full-track bulldozer comes to rescue the tractor (which fails to rescue the Nissan) and... gets stuck.

Eventually, all three vehicles dig themselves out of the situation, but who d'you reckon should clean them afterwards?

Being a brand new Porsche, it is based on the new 911 of ten minutes ago, codenamed ‘991', and is the successor to the 911 GT3 RSR of eleven minutes ago, the ‘997'. It will make its racing debut on 14 April at Silverstone in the World Endurance Championship, ahead of the 24 Le Mans onslaught in June....

This is Volkswagen's moon-shot car. We've just spent the day poring over it and have come back amazed. Welcome to the madly boffiny XL1.

It looks like a mini-supercar, it's as specialist as a Veyron, and it's certified in the official tests at 314mpg and 21g/km CO2. Which means it practically runs on thin air (it actually tested at 340mpg, but the officials imposed a rounding error - from 0.83/100km to 0.9). Yet it's comfy and decently roomy for two, has air-con and navigation, and will cruise at 100mph.

Internet, behold the fastest and most powerful four-door Bentley ever built. It's the new Flying Spur, and it'll make its official debut in early March at the Geneva show.

How powerful? Very. Only one engine is available, and it's Bentley's 6.0-litre, twin turbocharged, 48-valve W12, producing 616bhp and 590 lb ft of torque; considerably more than the 552bhp W12 of the outgoing Flying Spur. It's fed through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox to all four wheels, with a standard torque split of 40 per cent to the front, and 60 per cent to the rear. And the whole ‘fastest' bit? Well, the new Flying Spur will charge you and your passengers to 60mph in 4.3 seconds and onto a top speed of 200mph. In something weighing roughly the same as Wiltshire, that's absurd pace...
