UNESCO World Heritage isn’t a beauty contest. It’s at the heart of our efforts to create peace & sustainable development worldwide. A great example is in our new infographic, which shows how UNESCO World Heritage Sites help critically endangered rhino species avoid extinction. Many rhinos today are threatened by a massive surge in poaching for horns. Show your support & help us awareness by translating it into your language

Great news! Important Khmer statues were returned to Cambodia during opening of our #UNESCO #WorldHeritage meeting in Phnom Penh.

Our Director-General Irina Bokova said: “We are all encouraged by the historic voluntary restitution of two important Khmer Pandava statues by the Metropolitan #Museum of New York to the people of Cambodia. This restitution is an expression of strong ethical and moral behaviour that provides an example of good practice to other museums and collectors […] #UNESCO is honoured to have contributed to this restitution, which is, I believe, a move towards greater respect and mutual understanding.” http://ow.ly/m627S

It contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

President Hollande received our peace prize at UNESCO headquarters in Paris for taking action in January to end the control of insurgents in Northern Mali and bring peace and stability to the region. “What was targeted in Timbuktu was not just the heritage of one region or people, it was World Heritage,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova during the award ceremony on Wednesday. “It’s a symbol of ancient Islamic wisdom, spanning all of the Sahel, and of a common culture spanning all of West Africa,” she added, “from the ancient empire of Ghana to the Toucouleur empire and the Peul and Bambara kingdoms, that has been carried to our time for dialogue between civilisations.” http://ow.ly/lKFYn

UNESCO will support Palestinian university students from disadvantaged backgrounds and marginalized areas to pursue their studies by providing them with access to essential course materials, including text and reference books, computer and internet facilities, following the signing between the Director-General and the Ambassador of Palestine to UNESCO of a Plan of Operation for a project funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on 4 June 2013.

The 36-month project will establish or support libraries that contain vital course materials for students in 12 districts of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, benefiting some 12,000 students per year. Each library will be staffed by a local coordinator and a librarian supported by volunteers from the targeted communities, and be equipped with an Internet terminal, a printer, photocopier and computers, enabling students to search for information free of... more »

French President Francois Hollande will be awarded the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize during a ceremony, held at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris on 5 June. The ceremony will be webcast live on UNESCO website from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm (GMT+2). In early 2013, the Hollande government authorised a French-led operation to secure regions in northern Mali that had been captured by rebels. In addition to reported human rights violations in these areas, the conflict caused significant damage and destruction to the country’s priceless cultural heritage, including in Timbuktu, famous for its World Heritage-listed historic centre and a large collection of centuries-old Islamic manuscripts.

It's time to put the "fair" back in "play". There's an urgent need to resolve some of today's biggest sports challenges, such as sports fraud (ie: doping, match-fixing) & providing physical and sports education, for all. Sport is a powerful vehicle for many of society's values: positive ones such as fair-play, respect for others and one-self , and more negative values such as easy money, victory at all cost and the commercialization of athletes and their bodies. It is the responsibility of all those involved in sport to define together the values that we want -- without being naïve or fatalistic. This won't be done spontaneously by self-regulation: it requires political will and sufficient, appropriate resources. http://ow.ly/lrz10

An estimated three million ancient shipwrecks and sunken cities lie on the ocean floor as well as thousands of prehistoric sites on now submerged landscapes bearing witness to the evolution of past civilizations. Major sites include the 150 ancient cities submerged in the Mediterranean, the Lusitania and Titanic wrecks, the lighthouse ruins in Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the antique world, as well as ancient human remains and offerings found in North European and Asian lakes. This submerged heritage is endangered, but yet insufficiently protected, known and researched

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galápagos Islands, is known as a unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity, together with the extreme isolation of the islands, led to the development of unusual animal life – such as the land iguana, the giant tortoise and the many types of finch – that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection following his visit in 1835. Biodiversity is not just another factor – it is as crucial to the living world as is cultural diversity. Both sources of diversity are linked, and the future that we want to build depends on our collective ability to safeguard them both http://bitly.com/10m9Lqm

Sustainable development cannot be built solely through economic and political agreements. Culture makes development more sustainable. UNESCO’s role is to help the world to make the most of it for the benefit of all - nothing less will do. Without culture, there’s no participation from the people, and without this, there’s no sustainable development. The future depends on culture. Our current conference in Hangzhou (China), a World Heritage Site & Creative City for Crafts & Folk Art, will pave the way forward. We must place culture & creativity at the very heart of sustainable development & public policy. http://ow.ly/l3atW

Hagia Irene, meaning “Divine Peace” in Greek, is the stunning venue for the concerts taking place for this year’s Jazz Day in Istanbul. It is located in the grounds of the Topkapi Palace, near the Hagia Sophia and right in the historic centre of the old city, among the famous spires and domes of this beautiful and distinctive UNESO World Heritage site. The Hagia Irene is an ancient Christian Orthodox church, originally built in the 4th century, although renovated several times in its long history. It is now a museum and concert venue, especially prized for the beauty of its architecture, its impressive arches and columns, and most of all, its wonderful acoustics, which will soon be ringing with the sounds of jazz.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova expressed her deep distress over reports of the continuing destruction which has severely damaged the ancient city of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Today, the minaret of one of Syria's most famous mosques was destroyed during clashes in the northern city of Aleppo. The mosque, which is located within the UNESCO World Heritage site, has been devastated during the clashes and its minaret was reduced to debris.

The Great Mosque, at the heart of the ancient city of Aleppo, had already been badly damaged by fire during heavy fighting in the ancient city in October 2012. On that occasion, the Director-General reminded all parties of the country’s obligations under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, to which Syria is a signatory.

We have experienced a revolution over the last 20 years. Newspapers have gone online and publish today through a multitude of media. The 24-hour news cycle has become the norm embraced by most networks, with news broadcasted around the world every minute of every day. Blogging, tweeting, and podcasting have opened vast new channels for sharing information and fostering expression. Citizen reporters are increasingly leading the news cycle, using mobile phones, especially in disaster and conflict areas.

The transformation of the media landscape has created exciting opportunities for exchange and dialogue, and for sharing knowledge and information. However, it has not translated into stronger respect for fundamental freedoms. Our position is firm—freedom of expression and access to information are crucial building blocks for democracy, development and dialogue. http://ow.ly/kh7VG

Getting to school should not be a life-threatening voyage. Nor should it be considered an impossible dream. Poverty, conflict, exclusion, discrimination, distance or disability -- none of these must be allowed to stand in the way of every child's right to education. We must put education first.

This week in Washington, the World Bank and the United Nations will host a high-powered meeting of UN agency heads, the president of the Bank, donor country representatives and the education and finance ministers of eight countries that account for half of the world's out-of-school children. This will be the first time that this particular group will have gathered in the same place at the same time to confront the same issue. Our aim is to examine -- country by country -- the barriers preventing children from getting an education and to take decisive action to overcome them.

A look at Slavery & Heritage: The trade of African slaves is one of the most dehumanizing enterprises in human history. By protecting heritage sites, living traditions & documentary evidence relating to the Slave Trade, UNESCO helps to ensure that this terrible history is never forgotten, and its atrocious crimes are never repeated. What tools do we have to do so? World Heritage, Intangible Heritage & Memory of the World

From the 15th to the 19th century, the largest slave-trading center on the African coast was Gorée Island. It is protected as one of the 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a connection to slavery, in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America & Indian Ocean. A few cultural traditions, born out of the tragedy of the Slave Trade, are still practiced by the slaves’ descendants. Multilingualism is a source of strength and opportunity for humanity. Linguistic diversity is our common heritage. It is fragile heritage. Nearly half of the more than 6,000 languages spoken in the world could die out by the end of the century. UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger is the performance chart for this struggle. Language loss impoverishes humanity. It is a retreat in the defence of everyone’s rights to be heard, to learn and to communicate. Genuine dialogue implies respect for languages.

Please SHARE & +1 this infographic to help raise awareness about the need to improve the way freshwater is managed, so that no one is denied access to this basic human right. Better freshwater management can help avoid millions of deaths from inadequate water supply & hygiene, lighten the disproportionate water collection burden of women & girls, prepare us for a global population increase from 7 billion now to 9 billion in 2050, and so much more. http://visual.ly/fresh-water-all

if he contained no others
