Alan Shapiro4,112,640I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. SmugMug47,146Have you ever wondered how to get your photos picked up by ad agencies? How does a photographer get their foot in the door? These are questions many of us have thought about before, since photography (and ads) are everywhere we look. Well, SmugMug Pro @114056084994793924628 helped answer some of those question during a recent SmugMug podcast (bit.ly/ZsDwsb). But, we found, that the interest in this subject is off the charts, and the follow up questions for Alan have been coming in fast and furious. So Alan has volunteered to spend an hour answering nothing but your questions in a live, On Air Google Hangout!  _Join SmugMug's Rocky Bowels and Michael Bonocore as they ask your questions to Alan Tuesday, June 11th at 9:00PM EST._ Have a question you would like us to ask Alan? Simply add it as a comment here, on this event. Alan will also do his best to respond to any questions we do not ask during the broadcast, right here in the Google+ event. So make sure to RSVP, and post your best question for Alan. We will even be giving away a year of SmugMug Portfolio to one lucky person who asks a question before the end of the live hangout.  And yes, this will be recorded to view on our YouTube channel.  #Photography #Advertising #Commercial #SmugMug #SmugMugProWhat Ad Agencies Want From You - Interested in Fashion or Commercial Photography?2013-06-12 03:00:0076

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Photographers According To Sandra Nesbit

When I initially conceived, wrote, and finally published my article, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Photographers, I imagined it would be considered inspiring and stimulating by readers. I wasn’t certainly expecting that the first serious feedback I would receive would tell me it was annoying. This however is exactly what +Sandra Nesbit did. She kept sending me emails, telling me how much my instructions had annoyed her, because they were pushing her to go beyond her limits and step outside her comfort zone.

At some point, I told her: Listen, Sandra, instead of pestering me with your emails, why don’t you write it all down and show your level of annoyance to a wider audience? I will put it on my website and we’ll see who thinks you have a point.

Having not heard from her for a while, Iwas th... more »

Climbing the Mountains of Europe Camera in Hand

With this post, I have the pleasure of introducing Bethany Lloyd, walk leader and photographer in the Alps, as a regular contributor to the Travel Stories section of the site. From now one, Beth will contribute one article every month about her adventures across the mountains of Italy, Austria, Spain, and others. Besides being an experienced walk leader and a talented photographer, Beth is also a terrific writer.

Having not heard from her for a while, I was thinking I had found a way to get her off my back, but to my infinite dismay, after a few days my email client ringed and alerted me to another email from Sandra. Apparently, she had taken me up on it and not only had she written a fantastic piece about her own application of the 7 Habits, but she had included some amazing photos with it. Now I had to honor my promise and publish it. I find this to be only a tiny bit annoying after all, because she’s such a talented writer and photographer.

I might even start to like her.___

TTIM 36 – Exploring The Wilderness with Jay Patel

I have been wanting to interview +Jay Patel for quite some time, but Jay is a rather busy person, what with having to manage a photography business that is expanding in various directions, running a popular website, traveling, and on top of it all, being the father of a large family.

I finally managed to corner him in between trips to Iceland and Hawaii and of course wanted to know all about the land of fire and ice and his adventure chasing puffins and waterfalls. We also talked about what it takes to photograph the wilderness and I managed to extract from him some elements of his secret recipe for making a living out of photographing nature.

TTIM 35 – Finding Simplicity with Viktor Elizarov

Sometimes we are so taken up with the latest camera or lens, with pixel-peeping, and with learning the latest and greatest blending technique for Photoshop that we lose sight of some of the things that really matter when doing photography. I personally think that the greatest benefit that travel photography affords us is the joy of being there in the moment. If this is spoiled by having to fiddle with the complicated controls of the latest camera we bought, that we didn’t have the time to familiarize with and that we carried inside a heavy backpack to reach our destination, then it’s maybe better to stay at home.

I discussed this topic with +Viktor Elizarov, who has made simplification is mantra.

The Gilded Room in Venice

I have been to Venice many times, but for some reason I never took the chance to visit the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, an amazing masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and painting. Six Myths About Landscape Photography

There is certainly no shortage of advice that an aspiring landscape photographer can find online. Landscape Photography forums on the Internet are populated by self-appointed experts who ask nothing more than to give unsolicited suggestions and to warn against the evils of not following some arbitrary set of rules or what is perceived as common wisdom. Unfortunately, many half-truths or outright lies, if repeated enough times, sometimes assume the status of truths-that-should-never-be-questioned. These become like myths, but one can only grow in their craft when myths are examined ruthlessly and if necessary, abandoned.

Let’s look at some of those myths in detail.

TTIM 34 – Finding Your Artist’s Voice with Karen Hutton

It is always a great pleasure for me to converse with +Karen Hutton. There is never a dull moment and she has so many stories to tell! For this episode of the podcast, I asked her to collect her best memories from her recent trip across Europe and from her “artists’ retreat” in Provence.

Carnevale At The “Acqua Alta” Bookstore In Venice

Every year during Carnevale di Venezia, the world’s best costumed models and the world’s best photographers meet in Venice. The models have spent months designing and making their own costumes with the expectation that they will meet the best photographers who will reward them with brilliant photos. Usually, no payment is required and for most people, everyone meets at dawn at San Marco Square, with most people leaving by 10AM, when the tourists arrive.

For the more popular models and photographers, private shoots are the way to go. Details of the costumes are traditionally kept a secret, although some models will leave their favourite photographers clues or even send them pictures of the costumes before hand so that the epic photo shoots can be planned.

TTIM 33 – Paying It Forward In Nicaragua with Darlene Hildebrandt

If you’ve been following this podcast for some time, you will have certainly noticed that one of the recurring themes here is that of giving back, of using photography to effect some real change in the world and to benefit the communities that we visit when we travel.

This was the central point of Episode 25 with +John Butterill, of Episode 14 with Anna Tenne and of Episode 13 with +Ralph Velasco.

I was very happy then, when I contacted +Darlene Hildebrandt, asking for an interview, and she told me about her involvement with the people of the El Limonal community in Nicaragua. We immediately agreed that our conversation would be focused on that and, more in general, on the various ways in which travel photographers can do more than just come, snap some pictures and leave.

Interviewed on the "Traveling Image Makers" podcast!

Back in June, I took a few days off cycling for some birthday drinks ;-) and also conducted a interview with +Ugo Cei for a travel photography podcast. Here we chat in conversation about the trip we're currently on. Both the physical, mental and photography side of things, as well as what's to come after...

You can also see a bunch of recent photographs I've taken from this trip.

Thanks a bunch Ugo, it was fantastic being on your show!

Do you have some great shots of flowing water, waterfalls, rivers, the sea? It's your chance to submit them to a contest with some great prizes and, just by submitting, you get to download a copy of the latest +Visual Wilderness magazine, including an article by yours truly.

What I like about the ViewBug contests is that there are no rights grabs. You will never give away your rights to your images and to your firstborn ;)

So what are you waiting for?

TTIM 31 – Cycling Across Europe with Clint Burkinshaw

+Clint Burkinshaw, a Travel Photographer from South Australia, grew up spending most of his time engrossed in sport and the beach. That was until he started looking elsewhere to expand his mind further from the life that he knew and was content with, and turned to a map of the world. He was not a hundred percent sure yet of what he was to get from it, but in 2005 he tested the waters by taking off for several months and headed towards Europe where he hit the road and backpacked through well over a dozen countries before returning home. Little did he know, this was just the tip of the iceberg and just a taste of what was in store for him.

I have been following this trip for a while, waiting for Clint to settle down for a few days and to get an opportunity to interview him. This finally happened when he was taking a few days’ rest in Zakopane, Poland, and this episode is the outcome of that conversation. The Floating Piers

What would you do if your national team was playing an important football match and you lived in a country where football (soccer for you Americans) is akin to a religion?

Well, I don’t know about you, but me and a couple of friends decided to go out and take pictures, instead of watching the match.

What we wanted to do was to visit and photograph The Floating Piers, the latest installation by Bulgarian-born artist Christo.

TTIM 29 – Travel Photography as a Side Job with Andy Bitterer

My guest for this episode of the podcast is my long time friend +Andy Bitterer. Me and Andy have a lot in common, but one thing that truly sets us apart from many other travel photographers is that we both still have a full-time job–doing stuff other than photography–that keeps our families well fed. We take photos in our spare time, but photography is our true passion and our side job, so we try to practice it as much as possible. That often means exploiting every business trip we take for opportunities to visit new places and create new images.

Venice and the Magic of the Carnival

Join us in Venice, as we explore the romantic city during the days of the Carnival, a festival of colors, perfumes, and music that has no equal in the world.

Venice is a wonder every day of the year, but during the Carnival it also becomes a stage upon which hundreds of performers turn their fantasies into reality. Imagine, if you will, being transported to an enchanted land, inhabited by charming and mysterious characters who move with grace and elegance.

This year, we partnered with photographer Robin Yong, an experienced Venice Carnival photographer who has the best connections with the models, to bring you an exclusive experience like nobody else can.

The real travel photographer, unlike the tourist, works hard to capture images that are often not in plain sight.

We discussed at length about what is necessary to approach those communities and how much work and patience it took Robert to produce the images that are contained in his beautiful book, Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto. We also briefly talked about that other place that is reputed to be quite inaccessible by many, the Kingdom of Bhutan.___
