Back in October I did a flipped learning workshop with a group of two-year college faculty and support staff in eastern Pennsylvania, who were embarking on a multi-campus, multi-year project to convert courses over to flipped learning design. Today they sent me this video they made for faculty in the pilot program. So cool and such a good job! Share freely.

"Code and go" a game that ended up being really good fun in last week's code club.

"we would each go up to a laptop that was hooked up to the projector and type one line of code and then walk away"

Debugging the code was probably the funnest part.

Probably one of the best thoroughbred technical tacklers the game has ever seen.

*New blog post: taking a close look at the current winning strategy of the Axelrod tournament.*

The `EvolvedLookerUp` strategy was fine tuned through an evolutionary algorithm. There's a brilliant blog post describing it here: http://mojones.net/evolving-strategies-for-an-iterated-prisoners-dilemma-tournament.html

*In this blog post I take a look at how well it performs outside of the environment it evolved in.*

(TLDR: It still does pretty well.)

Huge congratulations to +Paul Harper who worked very hard to get his vision of the embedded modelling unit in place and well done to the post docs who work super hard to make it the success it is :)

It was a really nice evening :)

Still pinching ourselves after winning an award last night for the Times Higher Education Innovation and Technology prize at a very enjoyable and glitzy ceremony in London. Would not have been possible without a wonderful team of researchers (post-docs who do all the hard work) and working with some amazingly talented people in NHS Wales who make it all happen by translating the research into practice.___Amazing achievement by the group.

Some of you know that I'm currently working on a book tentatively titled Flipped Learning in the College Classroom: A User's Guide for Stylus Publishing, that should be out in 2016 or early 2017. One of the things I want to highlight in the book is how flipped learning can look like lots of different things and can fit into many different disciplines. So I'm soliciting the stories and use cases of any college instructor out there who is using flipped learning, to include in the book. I've set up the Google Form below for people click in and tell me about what they're doing. If it stands out, then I'll try my best to get your name, institution, and story into the book somewhere.

Please pass this along to any of your colleagues who are using flipped learning design, too. (Just community college, college, and university instructors though and not high school teachers... more »

I had a great time at St Davids College (a local high school) giving a talk about game theory and Axelrod's tournament.

Now on the train looking forward to the final selection event for the sustainable software institute fellowship.

Math folks, if you're on the job market right now or know someone who is, we have a tenure-track opening here at the +GVSU Mathematics Department that we'd love to fill. Come play math with +John Golden , +Matt Boelkins , +David Coffey , and more! About a month left until the deadline.

That was a really fun code club:

- One student DoS'd himself (and then wrote a blog post about it: http://cardiffmathematicscodeclub.github.io/website/2015/10/29/How-I-made-a-DNS-at-school.html) by opening 2500 txt files :)
- We took a group photo that we then legofy'd (https://github.com/JuanPotato/Legofy)
- Various great discussions, including an in depth discussion between a 3rd year student and a first year student about functional programming http://cardiffmathematicscodeclub.github.io/functional/python/tutorial/2015/10/18/introduction-to-functional-programming-in-python-p1.html).

Many research papers are written to impress reviewers rather than to clearly share ideas. Academia needs to do better. Our job isn't to convince others how smart we are. Our job is to create and share knowledge to help humanity get better!

+Marc Harper has written a really nice contribution that lets you quickly create new classes of strategies from old ones.

Tonight I used networkx to draw a Markov chain for the first time (https://networkx.github.io/). Very nicely impressed. You can see a 2 dimensional one on my white board as well as 2 and 3 dimensional ones drawn super straightforwardly with networkx.

I can probably set the layout for the states/nodes I should look in to that for 2 dimensional chains at least... I'll figure that out and then maybe write a blog post about it...

Is there a simpler way to compute the steady state distribution of a continuous Markov chain using Python?

https://gist.github.com/drvinceknight/0c91130639a6bcc9e085

(The steady state of a continuous Markov chain is a probability vector pi that is the solution to piQ=0 where Q is the transition rate matrix).
