Scott Jarvie429,025*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. The Royal Ontario Museum

When they announced a few years back, they said the extension to the Museum would be all glass. Little did they realize after they built the extension that the consistent sunlight would harm the artifacts within. So they came up with... these things.... that aren't exactly pretty. Le sigh

While I found it hard to find a good angle to shoot from, I figured I should just go for something abstract. And a little day-time long exposure certainly didn't help with the final image...

Announcing Toronto's Drink and Click Photowalk in February!

As we're all too familiar, it's rather cold outside these days and thought we should do something slightly different this month - a tour of a huge brewery downtown Toronto!

I was able to score a discounted rate for a group - $10 total each. We get to have a slightly-extended tour for us, about 45 minutes long. And after we get a nice cold pint as well!

The plan would be to continue the walk into the cold after for some shots in Brookfield Place. There's plenty of architecture to shoot along the way and have some fun.

Feel free to share with anybody who you think would be interested. Please RSVP sooner rather than later so I can account for the amount of people that will attend the tour and can't wait to meet up with you all!!___The walk starts tomorrow at 12:45 at Steam Whistle Round House beside the Sky Dome tomorrow! When the snow falls, I run out to try and capture that little bit of magic a Winter can bring. Since it's almost done, I can't imagine there will be many more snow falls that I can shoot in.

So I went to a local dog park ... and nobody was there. Good thing I waited around for another 5 minutes - it was like the entire dog neighbourhood showed up!

This specific one just rolled around in the snow and started howling at nothing in particular... just being a happy guy

Wow. Carsten Krieger summed up his disappointment with Canon very well. I love my Canon 5D Mark III and all, but with the innovation that seems to be going on there, it feels like the support system is not quite there for photographers.

Unleash your awesomeness Canon!! I believe in you. But will you???

Come join me on a photo walk tomorrow at 3pm in Toronto! I want to crush this challenge and have Toronto be the first Drink and Click chapter to win first place 2 months in a row!

Come on out!

Get your cameras, batteries & coats ready! We're headed on a photo walk downtown to get some cool portraits for this month's challenge. With the lights of Yonge/Dundas Square in the background, we're bound to get something awesome!

I'll have details shortly on where we'll meet. Most likely at Three Brewers or the Firkin just a little more South. I want to ensure we shoot during Blue Hour for some nice light and with a little luck - a little bit of warmer weather!

Can't wait to see you all Saturday!___Come join me on a photo walk tomorrow at 3pm in Toronto! I want to crush this challenge and have Toronto be the first Drink and Click chapter to win first place 2 months in a row!

Just a Little Bit Farther Out

On the world-wide +Instagram Instameet last weekend. The fog was very heavy in Toronto but provided a dark, mysterious feeling throughout the city.

This is a fellow photog that is popular on Instagram with a few thousand followers. I was lucky to meet some Toronto photogs that are only sharing on that social platform. While G+ is more wonderful for me to see photos from around the world, I get inspired by following people in my city.

Snowflake-a-Day #43

Here's a very strange one, but it is indeed a snowflake! You'll want to zoom in and check out the odd details!

This is one of the most bizarre snowflakes I've come across. Probably growing at warmer temperatures near the freezing point, it shows signs of containing multiple capped columns, arrowhead crystals and crossed plates. These types of crystal formations are not nearly as common to observe, because they melt very quickly and usually only occur at the beginning or end of the winter season in my part of the world.

Multiple Capped Column crystals are column-style crystals where extra plates begin growing out the sides due to imperfections in the crystal structure - common when this type of crystal encounters water droplets that "seed" new crystals on the surface of an already-established column.

Arrowhead crystals are even stranger, exhibiting visible angles near 90 degrees instead of the expected 60 degrees. These crystals are twinned crystals, with the connecting line running down the center - I'm pretty sure this is what I'm seeing in the blocky structure on the right. The crystal growth is opposite from what one would expect - the larger surface is the prism facet, which is usually the thin edge of a snowflake.

Crossed plate crystals maybe at work here, but it's hard to clearly tell. These are usually identified by aligned prism facets that run parallel to each-other. I can see towards the bottom that the repeating plates are not aligned in parallel (the edges are not flat to one another). There are some details around the mid-point that might fit this description a little better.

Whatever the terminology, some very exotic snowflake shapes can form when the temperature is between 0C and -5C. If you find this kind of stuff fascinating, be sure to check out the 304pg hardcover book I published last month titled Sky Crystals: Unraveling the Mysteries of Snowflakes - http://skycrystals.ca/ - all the scientific and photographic secrets are given away. :)___Wanna see something cool? Lena

I was lucky enough to meet +Lena Dawood  during some photo walks last year in Toronto, probably due to +Rob Elliott & +Ron Clifford's insistence that she come out and shoot with people she doesn't personally know!

She's a local photographer in the GTA that I'm happy to shoot with. Her work as a photographer is always a pleasure to look at.

Go ahead and circle her if you haven't already...

Happy birthday Lena!!

Much Harder than it Looks...

Getting a (good) photo of yourself on NYE is much harder than you can ever expect...
First - you have to find somebody less drunk than you. Ok, check (that part was surprisingly too easy).
Second - teach them how to use a Canon 5D Mark 3 ("I don't want to damage your $2k camera." My response? Are you kidding me? The camera is worth double that!")
Third - Allow them to take 15 photos so they can get one that is kinda in focus.
Fourth - Begrudgingly return the beautiful film camera but watch closely where they put it away...

Happy new year everyone!

Corn Dog Grass

I was watching so many 2013 review videos from others that it made me think of my own photos from the last year. While I did minimal travel through the year, I did get the opportunity to visit Muskoka, Ontario during the Fall to capture some of the beautiful colours there.

While I was shooting a few landscapes, I kept walking into the typha (otherwise known as cattails, reedmace, raupo, cumbungi & so many other variations). I popped on my 50mm and got in close. Surprisingly, I loved my shots of these more than the photos I stopped to take initially! It was probably the bokeh...

Fully edited with +onOne Software's wonderful software. I used a sharpening brush in Lightroom 5 for a few of the cattails so I didn't sharpen the entire image overall.

Nothing escaped the Ice in Toronto. I couldn't believe people were out driving but hey, it wasn't me.

My own mother lost power for 36 hours and was afraid of cancelling Christmas (thankfully it wasn't). I had friends on the Danforth that didn't have it for 2 days and more in Scarborough (the small town East of Toronto that got hit the hardest) that didn't have power for almost 4 days.

I'm glad the worst is over.

These trees looked like they were decimated, and they weren't alone. This was the look all around. I waited for the man to walk into the frame for a sense of scale...

My Own Street

This branch, at the beginning of my walk during the storm, was the scariest moment for me. As I started to take the photo, I heard a HUGE crack. About 5-7 feet away from me, a branch about 1/3 the size of the one you see here, succumbed to the Ice and broke off. It hit the house on it's way down, taking some shingles, power line & eavestrough with it and landed beside me.

I knew then my walk had to be a little quicker and safer. I was always paying attention to the trees above me because all you'd hear was the Ice cracking every few moments. You can tell it was impossible to avoid the trees altogether in this image if you look down the road...

This branch two streets down from me was another common occurrence. However, when I got to this street on Monarch Park Ave, people started gathering around (just before I took this photo). Why? It just fell. They heard a HUGE crack, as did I, and went to investigate. This was the result...

Merely a common occurrence. This was everywhere. Other drivers already attempted moving fallen trunks from their cars and to clean up the glass and damage...

This brush was in the front yard of somebody's else next to Monarch Park. This was the last pretty thing I saw before getting into the park. After, it was a disaster...

The icestorm in Toronto literally broke the trees. The sheer weight of the ice made some little guys like this just bend over. Most didn't make it. During my hour long walk, I could hear the branches in the park breaking almost every couple of minutes. Monarch Park looked like a disaster zone
