+1 for Net Neutrality

Some quotes from the article, for those who like TL;DRs:

Definition of Net Neutrality

"There's been a growing battle around protecting net neutrality — the principle that all internet traffic, no matter what it is or where it comes from, should be treated equally"

Obama's position

"I'm asking [the FCC] to recognize that for most Americans, the internet has become an essential part of everyday communication and everyday life."

"Regulating internet service under Title II would mean reclassifying it as a utility, like water."

"For the most part, that's a controversial idea in the eyes of service providers alone. It means that they're losing some control over what they sell, and that they can't favor certain services to benefit theiro... more »

Sunrise in Patagonia

What I like about this photo is the feeling of "home within nature". It's a beautiful but inhospitable landscape: the ice of the mountains, the sun's morning fire, the furious wind ripping across the lake. Yet in the middle of all this is a warm home. A lone person has almost made it across the fragile bridge, and maybe he'll have a cup of hot chocolate when he gets inside. :)

Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia was just voted 8th Wonder of the World on VirtualTourist, a Trip Advisor site. It was also featured on the cover of the National Geographic "The World's Most Beautiful Places" special issue. In other words, not a bad consolation prize for a canceled Antarctica trip with +Aravind Krishnaswamy and +Zalman Stern.

The new Google Photos!

Today, we're launching a brand new Photos app on Android, iOS, and Web! It's faster, more beautiful, and smarter than ever.

This is the first Photos app that can free you from the tedium of organizing every photo - it has search that you can actually depend on! Want to relive that vacation with your family? Search for "sunset". Can't remember the name of that beer you had while on vacation? Search for "beer in Los Angeles". Ya, it actually works. :)

Photos will be rolling out through the day. Go check it out!

A Google approach to Photos

At my daughter's preschool graduation not too long ago, my wife and I naturally wanted to capture the moment. So together we took a little over 550 photos and videos! And then promptly ran out of time to do anything with the photos we took. I think we can all sympathize with this; expecting all those photos and videos to make reliving the moments that matter easier, only to find out that the sheer volume has made it harder.

And that’s why I’m thrilled to introduce the new Google Photos. A home for all your photos and videos, organized and brought to life, so that you can share and save what matters.

Check out my blog post about how we’ve made it easier to relive a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos through the new Google Photos. http://goo.gl/TbBuZX ___The new Google Photos!

Seriously, people. Some of the best security experts in the world are trying to tell you something. It might be worth paying attention. :) Especially the part about 2 factor authentication!

Special offer from Google today: run a 2-minute security check on your account (which is really a good idea anyway) and get a free 2GB of Drive storage space. If your Google account matters to you -- your GMail, YouTube, Google+, Drive, and so on -- this is something worth running every few months.

And after you do that, go enable 2-step verification. (https://www.google.com/landing/2step/) It's the single best thing you can do to protect your account from being compromised. ___Seriously, people. Pummeled

These may look like ocean waves, but they're actually waves on a lake! According to Wikipedia, there are several factors that determine the size of a wave:
• The distance over which the wind blows
• Width of area affected by wind
• Water depth
• Wind speed
• Time over which the wind has blown

A lake is severely disadvantaged compared to an ocean on the first 3 factors because an ocean is thousands of miles long and several miles deep. That means that the last two factors - wind speed and duration - are MUCH greater here in Torres del Paine in order to produce these huge waves!

Dead trees, struggling flowers

Torres del Paine is full of black and white dead trees. They were burned by careless tourists in several fires over the years, and campfires are now banned in the park. Vegetation is beginning to grow back, but it will take centuries to get back to the way it used to be.

+Aravind Krishnaswamy, +Zalman Stern, and I walked through this grove of dead trees several times over our 3 days in the park. What drew me to this shot was the matching colors and textures in the flowers and tree.

Windswept

The trees, grass, and clouds all agree on one thing: the direction of the wind. The wind at Torres del Paine is so strong that the lakes here make waves that crash on shore like ocean waves do in other parts of the world. Cloud formations would hold a pose for us to snap a couple shots before the wind blew them away. In this scene, you can see that the trees, grass, and clouds are all bent in the direction of the wind.

+Aravind Krishnaswamy, +Zalman Stern, and I came here on our first evening in Torres del Paine National Park to scout sunrise locations for the next morning. The location we ended up shooting the next morning was the one in this photo: https://plus.google.com/+VincentMo/posts/7STc1xmvEf3

We heard these guys long before we saw them. We were doing a bit of street photography around Punta Arenas, Chile and heard drum beats as we approached the beach. When we got there, we saw these kids playing drums in a big circle and even throwing their drums in the air in synchronized choreography.

Thumbs up, everything is ok!

We came to Punta Arenas, Chile with the purpose of going to Antarctica. We're still in Chile because airplanes have to land by visual cues in Antarctica, and there's a dense fog at our destination. Even so, the group is generally in good spirits - so far! +Aravind Krishnaswamy and I had a good time doing some street photography in Valparaiso, though.

This chef statue will be giving a thumbs up no matter what happens around him. We'll try to keep the same spirit!

Why Bicyclists Break Traffic Laws

Most of us deeply understand the frustrations, dangers, and temptations of driving. When we see someone driving 10mph over the speed limit, we don't call the cops on them.

However, most of us don't understand the mind of a cyclist as deeply. When a cyclist breaks a red light through an empty intersection, very rarely would we (me included) think, "Ah, he wants to get out in front of the traffic so that he's not fighting for road space with cars when the light turns green."

Bicyclists surely do break laws for reasons other than safety, as well. The author writes, "I'll admit in the back of my own mind that I also sometimes disregard traffic laws not for my personal safety, but because I know that traffic laws, like road infrastructure, weren't created with cyclists in mind. And I say this as a car-owning cyclist, not a culture warrior: It seems somehow unjust — for reasons that Marshall's research may better articulate than me — to expect cyclists to follow all the rules of cars (no turn on red) while denying cyclists the same courtesies (like the right to occupy a full lane)."

Video Auto Enhance

Now, Auto Enhance works for photos and videos! Try it on your holiday videos!

#GooglePlusUpdate #GooglePhotosUpdate

Great looking videos just got easier

We're all taking more videos than ever before, thanks to our mobile devices, but some of them turn out less than stellar (yes, it happens to us all). But starting today, you can make your videos look and sound better with Google+.

I'm excited to announce that now, with one click, you can enhance the lighting, color, stability, and (coming soon) speech in your videos. Here’s how it works:

- Use Auto Backup to securely store the videos you shoot.
- Google+ will automatically analyze picture and audio quality. For best results make sure you have Auto Enhance turned on.  Learn more here: http://goo.gl/ycYHV4
- When we think we can make improvements, desktop Web users will see a banner asking whether you’d like to preview enhancements.
- The preview will show an instant side-by-side comparison so you can choose to apply changes or stick with the original.

In addition to the videos that Google+ suggests enhancing, you can choose to apply Auto Enhance to any videos you’d like:

- In Google+ on Mac, Windows, and Chrome OS, open a video, then choose More->Auto Enhance.
- In the Google+ Photos app on Android, open a video, tap the overflow menu, and then tap Auto Enhance.___Video Auto Enhance

Thousands of protesters

This is a panorama from the Hong Kong protest just before it erupted in violence. Protesters wore helmets and face masks as they occupied the road in front of the Hong Kong government buildings. Once the police surge began from the left edge of the photo, this entire crowd was cleared out to the edges of the photo in about 3 minutes (according to the timestamps on my photos). The protesters didn't stand much of a chance since the police held all the weapons.

Batons vs Umbrellas

Last Sunday Nov 30, student protestors blockaded the Hong Kong government buildings in an attempt to reopen talks about reforming the Hong Kong election system. The police responded with pepper spray, tear spray, batons, dogs, and water cannons. Through the course of the night, the students reoccupied the street in front of the Chief Executive's Office several times, with the police beating them back each time.

Pepper spray to the face

As the police beat the protestors back with batons and pepper spray, this girl attempted to pull her friend over the highway median and away from danger. The policeman saw this and pepper sprayed her in the face. The guy to her right rushed to block the pepper spray but was moments too late. At the bottom left, you can see a guy asking a policeman (out of frame) to not beat him with a baton.

Unfortunately, this section of protestors was not as well equipped with umbrellas as the ones in this photo: https://plus.google.com/+VincentMo/posts/Wj4a9fwn69L

Most of the people wearing black helmets are police. Those wearing yellow helmets, white helmets, and bike helmets are protestors.

Umbrella Movement erupts

Frustrated with the lack of progress, student protesters surrounded one of the key government buildings in Hong Kong tonight: the Chief Executive's Office. The office is one city block from the large Occupy location in Admiralty where protesters have been encamped for 2 months. Tension built until a violent clash erupted between police and protesters.

Here, you can see police pepper spraying the protesters, who attempt to shield themselves with umbrellas. This is where the name Umbrella Movement comes from. On the left, you can see a yellow tank that holds the tear spray which the police also used liberally tonight.

Students are upset that the upcoming Chief Executive elections will only allow Hong Kongers to choose between a small number of candidates who will be hand picked by a pro-Beijing Nominating Committee. The protesters' rally cry has been, "我要真普選", translated, "I want real universal suffrage." This is in contrast to what they perceive as a disingenuous form of suffrage put in place by the Chinese government.

Dead birds at the protest

The protestors are still making their presence known in Mong Kok, where the Hong Kong police recently cleared out a protest site.

Tonight, an intersection and the surrounding sidewalks were flooded with student protestors... with the exception of one empty circle. In the middle of the circle were 3 dead birds (two in the photo and one behind me). Protestors were confused, curious, and speculating on whether the birds were directly related to the protest.

Interesting article about what it would take to reverse climate change from a couple of Google engineers. Today's renewable energy technologies are not it. While they don't say it because there is no clear answer yet, nuclear energy may be part of the solution (along with forestation). Some more on that interpretation is here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/11/21/renewable_energy_simply_wont_work_google_renewables_engineers/

City within a city

The Umbrella Movement occupation in Admiralty has blocked off Connaught Road Central, the major highway in the area. The large building overlooking the protestors houses the Hong Kong government. This is the location of the occupation: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Central+Government+Offices_Harcourt+Road

After visiting the site a few times, I've learned some of its geography: where they've planted gardens, where the first aid stations are, where the students study. There are major walkways and arterial side roads. Improvised bridges have been built over the medians that normally separate the highway lanes. They're doing small scale construction of booths using wood and power tools. It's amazing that all of this will vanish at some point and it will turn back into a bustling highway.

The counter protest

Every issue has two sides, and the Umbrella Movement has its own opponents in Hong Kong. The Umbrella (pro-Occupy) side is represented by yellow ribbons, while the anti-Occupy side is represented by blue ribbons. Some have characterized the counter protests as being on the side of the police, though there are probably some police who are sympathetic to the Umbrella Movement while doing their jobs to keep things in check.

From Wikipedia: A significant part of the population, refugees from Communist China in the 1950s and 1960s, lived through the turmoil of the Hong Kong 1967 Leftist riots. Others feel that the protesters are too idealistic, and fear upsetting the PRC leadership and the possibility of another repeat of the crackdown that ended the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Symbol of the Movement

Hong Kong's "Umbrella Movement", also called "Umbrella Revolution" or "Occupy Central", has been going for about 2 months. The yellow umbrella became a symbol of the movement after students used umbrellas to shield themselves from tear gas fired by police.

The conflict was sparked around the decision that the candidates for Hong Kong's "Chief Executive" election would be pre-selected by the largely pro-Beijing Election Committee. From Wikipedia: The decision states that for the 2017 Chief Executive election, a nominating committee, mirroring the present 1200-member Election Committee be formed to nominate two to three candidates, each of whom must receive the support of more than half of the members of the nominating committee. Obama's position

"Regulating internet service under Title II would mean reclassifying it as a utility, like water."

"For the most part, that's a controversial idea in the eyes of service providers alone. It means that they're losing some control over what they sell, and that they can't favor certain services to benefit their own business. Instead, providers would be stuck allowing consumers to use the internet as they want to, using whatever services they like without any penalty. If that sounds pretty great, it's because that's basically how the internet has worked up until now."

Obama's statement to the FCC

"An open Internet is essential to the American economy, and increasingly to our very way of life. By lowering the cost of launching a new idea, igniting new political movements, and bringing communities closer together, it has been one of the most significant democratizing influences the world has ever known.

"Net neutrality" has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation — but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted. We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas. That is why today, I am asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to answer the call of almost 4 million public comments, and implement the strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality." ...

See the rest of Obama's statement at the bottom of the linked article.

From +Andy Lee:
Four days left to fund Plus One Collection III

Only 4 days remaining to support our campaign, but we still have a long way to go, as we only crossed 47% mark in our goal. While we think we may still reach it, it does look like we just as well may miss it.

What happens if we miss it? The fundraising campaign was setup as "fixed funding", meaning our project won't get funded unless we reach the $30,000 goal. If it doesn't get funded, all contributions will be refunded to the supporters. After some thought, we think that we may cancel the book for the year if that is the outcome, as we do not see any other options to publish the book the way we want to and the way we can. We already invested a lot of time and effort, but we still do need the funds to print and ship the books to the buyers.

+Ivan Makarov is at it again, and we all benefit! For the past 3 years, Ivan has put together the Plus One Collection to raise funds for charities. This year, the proceeds will go to Saving Eliza (http://savingeliza.com). You can order a beautiful photo book and support Eliza at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/plus-one-collection-iii

Announcing the list of artists who's work will be included in Plus One Collection print book

And now what many of you have been waiting for - announcing the list of artists who's work will be included in the print book #PlusOneCollectionIII

Link -> http://www.photographersforgood.com/Plus-One-Collection/Plus-One-Collection-III-List-o (Tip: use CTRL+F to see if your name is there to save time)

It's always a hard task to pick the photos because there are so many amazing ones that we just can't include because we have limited space in the book. Any judge can testify to you of that. We had seven capable judges this time around who went through every submission and we picked the best 285 or so for the book based on the final rankings.

But what we decided to do to compensate for this is to release a poster that will have everyone's submission posted. You can order that poster on Indiegogo page as well - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/plus-one-collection-iii/x/2020311

As with the book, all net proceeds from the sale of the poster will go to Saving Eliza fund.

What's next? Keep spreading the word about the fundraising campaign! We still need to raise $25,000 before the book can go to press. And if you can contribute, please do. ___+Plus One Collection III

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

When you first see the memorial, your first impression is that it's a rigid grid of columns. When you walk through it though, you find out that the ground is uneven and the columns are slightly leaning in random directions. It gives you a slightly uneasy feeling. +Aravind Krishnaswamy and I visited the memorial in Berlin earlier this year and spent quite a long while wandering around in it.

Tweak your edits on Google+ Photos

When you edit photos on Google+, we make the edits non-destructively so you can always start over - that's old news. :) Today, we've gone a step further. Now, you can see the list of filters you've applied and change the settings after the fact. Nice!

We've also launched Auto Awesome Effects, which puts a stylistic spin on your photos. And with Edit lists, you can see exactly what Auto Awesome Effects did to your photo. A rare glimpse into Google's Magic Picture Machine, as +Mike Elgan calls it. :)

Google+ Photos: edit your previous edits, and Auto Awesome Effects

If you’re afraid of commitment, then you probably don’t edit your photos online :-) Reason being: many services overwrite (aka “destroy”) your images during the editing process. So once you save a change, you can’t change your mind.

In contrast: Google+ Photos offers non-destructive editing on Android, iOS and Chrome, and it syncs your edits to the cloud. So you can start editing on one device, continue on another, and your originals are always available. Today we’re making the Chrome experience even more flexible by letting you go back and adjust your previous edits. (Commitment-phobes rejoice!) For example:

- Suppose you want to re-crop a photo but leave the other effects alone. Or keep your choice of frames, but turn up the brightness and contrast.
- Now you can, and you don’t have to start from scratch. Just open your photo in the Chrome editor, click on “Edits,” and you’ll be able to adjust the edits you’ve already made.
- When you settle on a look you really like, you can also copy those edits and apply them to another photo.

Even if you don’t have time to edit your images, we can still help your photos look their best. Take Auto Awesome, for instance: when you back up your photos and videos to Google+, we can gift you fun new versions automatically. These creations range from animated GIFs to professional-quality movies, and today we’re adding a new flavor: Auto Awesome Effects.

Now when you upload a land or cityscape photo, Effects can stylize your image to make the subject really pop. You can enjoy the new photo as is, or open the editor to make further adjustments. Either way it’s easy (and fun!).

Both updates are rolling out today, so take some pictures, try some edits, and let us know what you think.

Net Neutrality with laughs

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while, and it's on a topic that everyone who likes the internet needs to be informed about.

OK. If there is one video you watch this month, this should be it: it is 13 minutes of your life which will be well-spent. Because at the end of it, you will actually know what is going on with net neutrality, (or as he calls it, "preventing cable company fuckery") and exactly what the sleazy deals are behind it, but you will also be laughing your ass off, because John Oliver is hilarious.

Net neutrality is kind of amazing, because destroying it manages to screw over almost everyone.

Small companies get screwed over because they can't afford to pay off the cable companies to get access to their customers. Oh, you had an idea for a business using the Internet? Well, I hope your business plan includes a few million bucks to pay for your customers to be allowed to reach your site.

Big companies get screwed over because they're shaken down for (literally) billions of dollars by cable companies -- "That's a nice business you have there. Pity if someone were to make sure your customers could never reach you again" -- and that's assuming that the cable companies don't see them as competitors (if, say, they were doing something like streaming video...), at which point those companies could just shut them off outright.

People who use the Internet get screwed because the sites they want to connect to can't pay these extra fees, or are just being shut down outright by the cable companies. What, you wanted to watch a movie tonight? Sorry. Maybe you should have rented it from Comcast, instead, sucker!

In fact, nearly everyone in the entire country gets screwed over by this. So why, you ask, would the government be considering such a thing?

Well. There is one group who doesn't get screwed over by it at all. Your friends and mine at Comcast, Time-Warner, Verizon, and AT&T. But don't worry; they have your best interests at heart. And the service guy will be there between 2 and 6.

Really.

Honest.___Net Neutrality with laughs

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while, and it's on a topic that everyone who likes the internet needs to be informed about.

1. Auto Awesome Stories now combine your photos, videos and the places you visit into beautiful travelogues. You can read more at http://goo.gl/JGgzil.

2. Auto Awesome Movies are now available on Android, iOS and the web, so lots more people will receive highlight reels of their photos and videos. Here’s one example: http://goo.gl/9ljcdj.

3. You can now create animated GIFs and photobooth-style images on demand. Just tap the new plus button in Photos, and select either Motion or Mix.

4. Really big photo libraries are now supported on Android, so you can access your many thousands of photos quickly and easily.

5. You can now browse your entire photo library, as well as your highlights, by date. Just drag the new scroll bar to move forwards or backwards in time.

6. Profiles now display total content views on both Android and the web. (You can choose to show or hide this number via settings.)

7. A new navigation menu makes it easier to switch between your favorite circles and communities, as well as other places in the app.

8. It’s a lot easier to share content from your phone or tablet. To give it a try, just tap the new pencil icon at the bottom right of the stream.

9. The app menu now slides away as you move down the stream, letting posts fill the entire screen.

Look for the new app as it rolls out gradually to Google Play (http://goo.gl/ruuHW), and let us know what you think!

Reichstag tide pool

The Reichstag dome is one of the most interesting architectural subjects I've photographed. I love all the swoopy lines. Thanks, Berlin!

Reichstag tornado

Another view of the Reichstag dome. The Reichstag building burned down in 1933 and got bombed during WWII. The glass dome was added after reunification. In 1999, the German parliament finally moved back in.

It's pretty neat to compare the new dome against the original one from the 1800s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_building

Reichstag warp core

This is inside the Reichstag dome in Berlin. The Reichstag building has a long history, but it's currently (again) where the German parliament meets.

I like to imagine that this is what a Star Trek warp core would have looked like had it been invented in Germany. Like if Audi built a starship. :)

Berlin Hauptbahnhof

"Hauptbahnhof" means "main station". I think it looks like the head and shoulders of a giant robot with two missile arrays strapped to its shoulders. The tower with "DB" at the top is the antenna that he's using to receive targeting coordinates from the airborne support craft.

That cyclist is doomed.
