Why Bicyclists Break Traffic Laws

Most of us deeply understand the frustrations, dangers, and temptations of driving. When we see someone driving 10mph over the speed limit, we don't call the cops on them.

However, most of us don't understand the mind of a cyclist as deeply. When a cyclist breaks a red light through an empty intersection, very rarely would we (me included) think, "Ah, he wants to get out in front of the traffic so that he's not fighting for road space with cars when the light turns green."

Bicyclists surely do break laws for reasons other than safety, as well. The author writes, "I'll admit in the back of my own mind that I also sometimes disregard traffic laws not for my personal safety, but because I know that traffic laws, like road infrastructure, weren't created with cyclists in mind. And I say this as a... more »

Sunrise in Patagonia

What I like about this photo is the feeling of "home within nature". It's a beautiful but inhospitable landscape: the ice of the mountains, the sun's morning fire, the furious wind ripping across the lake. Yet in the middle of all this is a warm home. A lone person has almost made it across the fragile bridge, and maybe he'll have a cup of hot chocolate when he gets inside. :)

Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia was just voted 8th Wonder of the World on VirtualTourist, a Trip Advisor site. It was also featured on the cover of the National Geographic "The World's Most Beautiful Places" special issue. In other words, not a bad consolation prize for a canceled Antarctica trip with +Aravind Krishnaswamy and +Zalman Stern.

Penguins in formation!

I promise this isn't Photoshop - the penguins got into this V shape all on their own! These are gentoo penguins. You can tell by the orange beaks and feet. This was from Cuverville Island in Antarctica. South Georgia Island had more wildlife, but Antarctica added icebergs. There were some really surreal scenes down there.

What an honor to work on one of the most exciting products Google has ever launched!

And a nice shoutout to our team:
"Controlling my lighting system is probably what I find most useful about the Home, as it precludes the need for me to pull out my phone, open an app, and tap a button to just turn out the lights. I’ve found Home to be more reliable than the Echo for my Hue and SmartThings systems — it generally is able to work with just one command, which I can’t always say about the Echo."

Caffè del Doge

This was some great coffee in Venice. I half expected that all of the coffee in Italy would be great, but that wasn't the case. The coffee at most restaurants was only a bit better than at restaurants in the US, i.e. pretty bad. :) Caffè del Doge was exceptional though.

In Italy, people don't have coffee with their meal. You typically have an espresso after you've finished lunch or dinner. Milk only goes in your coffee in the morning - you typically have cappuccinos or lattes only for breakfast.

Another difference is the portions: in the US, a standard espresso is a double shot, whereas in Italy the default is a single shot, as you see in this photo. Cappuccinos are ~6oz - you can't get a 16oz milk shake like they serve at Starbucks. :)

Shared albums! People labeling! Chromecast!

Take a look at the latest set of features we're launching on Google Photos!

Shared Albums (letting multiple people contribute to an album) is one feature that many people have wanted for a long time.

People Labeling allows you to assign a private label to your people clusters and search for them by name, for example, "Vincent at the beach".

And, of course, Chromecast is one of the best ways to show photos to a group of people.

Hope you like it! Let us know what you think.

Introducing new ways to organize and share your photos

With Google Photos, you have a home for all your photos and videos, organized and brought to life, so you can share and save what matters. Today, we’re announcing three new features that help you better find and share the photos and videos that matter, with the people that matter.

Chromecast Support

Better share photos and videos in person, and on the biggest screen, your TV!

Beginning tomorrow, you can cast photos and videos to your TV with Chromecast. Choose what appears on the TV while you browse your library, and even cast photos you just took – photos and videos don’t need to be backed up first.

Chromecast support is rolling out this week on Android and coming soon to iOS.

People Labeling

Label the people in your photos by what you call them, name or nickname.

This week in the U.S. you’ll be able to label the people in your photos however you want - Mom can be “Mom”, “Juliana”, or “Cat Lady” – whatever you choose. These labels are completely private to you and are not associated with a Google account or profile. Once people in your photos are labeled, you can make advanced searches to find photos of people with things, places or people, such as “Mom at the beach” or “Juliana and Marco in Hawaii.”

People labeling is rolling out in the U.S. this week on Android and is coming soon to iOS and the web.

Shared Albums

Gather all your photos and videos from friends and family in one spot, and know as soon as new moments are added.

We’re introducing shared albums later this year – a new, easy way to pool photos and videos with whomever you want, and get updates when new moments are added. There’s no setup involved, and you can use shared albums on any device – Android, iOS, Mac, Windows and Chrome OS.

Stay tuned for updates on when these features are available. For more on today's Google announcements, visit http://goo.gl/klbhET.___Shared albums! People labeling! Chromecast!

Rediscover this day

Grab the update or visit http://photos.google.com and try out our new "Rediscover this day" feature! As you might expect, this feature takes advantage of Google Photos's ability to identify nice looking photos that are likely to be meaningful to you. You won't necessarily get one every day - only on days when Google Photos thinks there's something interesting to see. I look forward to getting notifications from the Google Photos Assistant, always excited to see what significant event it digs up from years ago.

Walk down memory lane

Photos help us reminisce about the things we've done, bringing back events from one, two, or even ten years ago. Today, Google Photos is introducing a new opt-in feature where you can choose to privately rediscover your memories from the past. If you snapped photos on a hiking trip this time last year, chances are that Google Photos will let you know. And with a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos in one place, you’ll have lots of memories to look back on.

By opting in, you’ll get cards in the Assistant view reminding you of photos from events in your past, including a collage featuring people and places from that day. Share with whoever you want, however you want, whether that’s via email, a social network, or by showing the person next to you. Or savor the moment for yourself; it’s completely private until you decide to share.

The new feature is now available on Google Photos for iOS at https://goo.gl/toCWvw and the web at http://photos.google.com, and is rolling out to Google Photos for Android at https://goo.gl/BajWpo___Rediscover this day

The new Google Photos!

Today, we're launching a brand new Photos app on Android, iOS, and Web! It's faster, more beautiful, and smarter than ever.

This is the first Photos app that can free you from the tedium of organizing every photo - it has search that you can actually depend on! Want to relive that vacation with your family? Search for "sunset". Can't remember the name of that beer you had while on vacation? Search for "beer in Los Angeles". Ya, it actually works. :)

Photos will be rolling out through the day. Go check it out!

A Google approach to Photos

At my daughter's preschool graduation not too long ago, my wife and I naturally wanted to capture the moment. So together we took a little over 550 photos and videos! And then promptly ran out of time to do anything with the photos we took. I think we can all sympathize with this; expecting all those photos and videos to make reliving the moments that matter easier, only to find out that the sheer volume has made it harder.

And that’s why I’m thrilled to introduce the new Google Photos. A home for all your photos and videos, organized and brought to life, so that you can share and save what matters.

Check out my blog post about how we’ve made it easier to relive a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos through the new Google Photos. http://goo.gl/TbBuZX ___The new Google Photos!

Seriously, people. Some of the best security experts in the world are trying to tell you something. It might be worth paying attention. :) Especially the part about 2 factor authentication!

Special offer from Google today: run a 2-minute security check on your account (which is really a good idea anyway) and get a free 2GB of Drive storage space. If your Google account matters to you -- your GMail, YouTube, Google+, Drive, and so on -- this is something worth running every few months.

And after you do that, go enable 2-step verification. (https://www.google.com/landing/2step/) It's the single best thing you can do to protect your account from being compromised. ___Seriously, people. Pummeled

These may look like ocean waves, but they're actually waves on a lake! According to Wikipedia, there are several factors that determine the size of a wave:
• The distance over which the wind blows
• Width of area affected by wind
• Water depth
• Wind speed
• Time over which the wind has blown

A lake is severely disadvantaged compared to an ocean on the first 3 factors because an ocean is thousands of miles long and several miles deep. That means that the last two factors - wind speed and duration - are MUCH greater here in Torres del Paine in order to produce these huge waves!

Dead trees, struggling flowers

Torres del Paine is full of black and white dead trees. They were burned by careless tourists in several fires over the years, and campfires are now banned in the park. Vegetation is beginning to grow back, but it will take centuries to get back to the way it used to be.

+Aravind Krishnaswamy, +Zalman Stern, and I walked through this grove of dead trees several times over our 3 days in the park. What drew me to this shot was the matching colors and textures in the flowers and tree.

Windswept

The trees, grass, and clouds all agree on one thing: the direction of the wind. The wind at Torres del Paine is so strong that the lakes here make waves that crash on shore like ocean waves do in other parts of the world. Cloud formations would hold a pose for us to snap a couple shots before the wind blew them away. In this scene, you can see that the trees, grass, and clouds are all bent in the direction of the wind.

+Aravind Krishnaswamy, +Zalman Stern, and I came here on our first evening in Torres del Paine National Park to scout sunrise locations for the next morning. The location we ended up shooting the next morning was the one in this photo: https://plus.google.com/+VincentMo/posts/7STc1xmvEf3

Beachside drummers

We heard these guys long before we saw them. We were doing a bit of street photography around Punta Arenas, Chile and heard drum beats as we approached the beach. When we got there, we saw these kids playing drums in a big circle and even throwing their drums in the air in synchronized choreography.

Since we're unable to go to Antarctica (so far), we're making the best of our time in Punta Arenas, Chile. This morning, +Aravind Krishnaswamy and I went out for some street shooting. Thumbs up, everything is ok!

We came to Punta Arenas, Chile with the purpose of going to Antarctica. We're still in Chile because airplanes have to land by visual cues in Antarctica, and there's a dense fog at our destination. Even so, the group is generally in good spirits - so far! +Aravind Krishnaswamy and I had a good time doing some street photography in Valparaiso, though.

This chef statue will be giving a thumbs up no matter what happens around him. We'll try to keep the same spirit!

And I say this as a car-owning cyclist, not a culture warrior: It seems somehow unjust — for reasons that Marshall's research may better articulate than me — to expect cyclists to follow all the rules of cars (no turn on red) while denying cyclists the same courtesies (like the right to occupy a full lane)."

#GooglePlusUpdate #GooglePhotosUpdate

Great looking videos just got easier

We're all taking more videos than ever before, thanks to our mobile devices, but some of them turn out less than stellar (yes, it happens to us all). But starting today, you can make your videos look and sound better with Google+.

I'm excited to announce that now, with one click, you can enhance the lighting, color, stability, and (coming soon) speech in your videos. Here’s how it works:

- Use Auto Backup to securely store the videos you shoot.
- Google+ will automatically analyze picture and audio quality. For best results make sure you have Auto Enhance turned on.  Learn more here: http://goo.gl/ycYHV4
- When we think we can make improvements, desktop Web users will see a banner asking whether you’d like to preview enhancements.
- The preview will show an instant side-by-side comparison so you can choose to apply changes or stick with the original.

In addition to the videos that Google+ suggests enhancing, you can choose to apply Auto Enhance to any videos you’d like:

- In Google+ on Mac, Windows, and Chrome OS, open a video, then choose More->Auto Enhance.
- In the Google+ Photos app on Android, open a video, tap the overflow menu, and then tap Auto Enhance.___Video Auto Enhance

Thousands of protesters

This is a panorama from the Hong Kong protest just before it erupted in violence. Protesters wore helmets and face masks as they occupied the road in front of the Hong Kong government buildings. Once the police surge began from the left edge of the photo, this entire crowd was cleared out to the edges of the photo in about 3 minutes (according to the timestamps on my photos). The protesters didn't stand much of a chance since the police held all the weapons.

Batons vs Umbrellas

Last Sunday Nov 30, student protestors blockaded the Hong Kong government buildings in an attempt to reopen talks about reforming the Hong Kong election system. The police responded with pepper spray, tear spray, batons, dogs, and water cannons. Through the course of the night, the students reoccupied the street in front of the Chief Executive's Office several times, with the police beating them back each time.

Pepper spray to the face

As the police beat the protestors back with batons and pepper spray, this girl attempted to pull her friend over the highway median and away from danger. The policeman saw this and pepper sprayed her in the face. The guy to her right rushed to block the pepper spray but was moments too late. At the bottom left, you can see a guy asking a policeman (out of frame) to not beat him with a baton.

Unfortunately, this section of protestors was not as well equipped with umbrellas as the ones in this photo: https://plus.google.com/+VincentMo/posts/Wj4a9fwn69L

Umbrella Movement erupts

Frustrated with the lack of progress, student protesters surrounded one of the key government buildings in Hong Kong tonight: the Chief Executive's Office. Students are upset that the upcoming Chief Executive elections will only allow Hong Kongers to choose between a small number of candidates who will be hand picked by a pro-Beijing Nominating Committee. The protesters' rally cry has been, "我要真普選", translated, "I want real universal suffrage." This is in contrast to what they perceive as a disingenuous form of suffrage put in place by the Chinese government.

Dead birds at the protest

The protestors are still making their presence known in Mong Kok, where the Hong Kong police recently cleared out a protest site.

Tonight, an intersection and the surrounding sidewalks were flooded with student protestors... with the exception of one empty circle. In the middle of the circle were 3 dead birds (two in the photo and one behind me). Protestors were confused, curious, and speculating on whether the birds were directly related to the protest.
