I'm Ready for a Fresh Start

Ok Microsoft. XBox One.

New Name. New Architecture. New Plans for integration with the Future Internet of Things.

Clean break from old standards that makes old games only playable on old systems.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE provide developer support or at least get the heck out of the way and allow developers to run with the new platform.

You've assembled a time machine to take us into the future. Please be willing to allow others to drive.

Thoughts?

Kudos to the Bobby Bones Show for Raising Support for Oklahoma

After devastating tornadoes tore through the town of Moore, Oklahoma, the Bobby Bones Show couldn't sit around and just watch the horrific news coverage -- so Bobby enlisted the help of his neighbors on Music Row.

Bobby asked artists and record labels in Nashville to pour out support the best way they could -- by singing and donating autographed guitars or items to auction off to donate to the Red Cross and they didn't hold back.

Artists that were in town, like Jake Owen, Phil Vassar and Parmalee (the first to answer Bobby's plea), stopped by and those that weren't, made sure to call and promise a guitar or signed item to donate.

But even the cursing Minecrafters are better than pre-tween-targeted sitcoms on Disney or Nickelodeon. Let my sweet impressionable kid spend a day with China on AntFarm or Alex on Wizards of Waverly Place and my parental battles erupt. Bad language is easy to curb, but stupid adult stereotypes, sarcasm, backstabbing behavior, and contempt are not.

My Windows 7 and Android Studio Don't Play Well Together

I use my employer's Win 7 computer to develop using the Microsoft Kinect. I thought it would be great to give the new Android Studio a try, but after running the install.... nothing. A little bit of hard drive activity after launch, but no errors or dialogs, just nothing.

Any suggestions?

My first thought is to dual-boot Ubuntu and sidestep the problem, but IT get's mousy over anything they cannot control remotely...

One reason why it is what it is, kiddies.
In the 2012 election cycle, the IRS union gave its money this way:

For the U.S. Senate:
Total to Democrats: $156,750
Total to Republicans: $1,000

For the U.S. House:
Total to Democrats: $391,062
Total to Republicans: $23,000

Damn Skippy

Over the next five years, the US will account for a third of new oil supplies, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The US will change from the world's leading importer of oil to a net exporter.

Demand for oil from Middle-East oil producers is set to slow as a result.

Obamacare Rate Explosion

It concluded: "Despite promises that the law will lower costs, [Obamacare] will in fact cause the premiums of many Americans to spike substantially. The broken promises are numerous, and the empirical data reveal that many Americans, from recent college graduates to older adults, will not be able to afford the law's higher costs."

How did I not know about this?

I missed Clippy (for rather obvious reasons), and never understood the hatred some people had for him (her? I'm not very good at sexing paperclips). In fact, I remember installing "Vigor" just because having a talking paperclip was clearly what the whole point of computers was, and I was very disappointed in how inferior the Linux version of clippy was.

My life has not been complete.

Until now. Because I just found out that there's a JS version of clippy. Why the is this not part of Gnome, pray tell?

Religion is the Study of Values

"Various Religious Traditions describe the Creator(s) as being the source of all Power, both Political and Mechanical, sufficient to create all of the Mechanical and Multi-minded Sociocultural Systems we have discovered in our universe. As these Complex Adaptive Systems have no observable centralized corporeal locus of Power, humans cannot use Science to measure and prove or disprove the existence of a Creator. Instead, the existence of a Creator is accepted through Faith and Belief that Values have been communicated and distributed to the members of the system."

YES, YES, YES!

Stop the dancing and plow "forward". Two (3) possible outcomes.

1. Progressives are correct: Abundance for everybody and we all win.

2. Conservatives are correct: Everything turns to shit and burns to the ground. We record it in the history books and rebuild from scratch after learning a hard lesson.

(3). NOTHING HAPPENS. We ignore the politicians for the self-important blowhards they are and get back to watching Reality TV and eating Nachos...

Well Stated.

"We can fear 3D printing. Even if we ban every digital file, someone out there will make something dangerous and slap the sash of liberty on it. In the end we live in a world of chaos tempered solely by intelligence and compassion. It is my undying hope that those latter facets of our nature will win out and so I understand the value of tinkering. The speed with which Wilson ignored his own “No Takedown” rule shows us how stern and staunch a freedom fighter this boy really is. But I’d much rather see a vibrant – if sometimes misguided – marketplace of ideas than a culture of fear-mongering and bloviating. Only a fool would download and print Wilson’s gun. But, if guns can remain in our lock boxes and closets, it is the fool’s right to do so, no matter what."

Games Moving to Mobile?

"It also means that players have access to vastly more games and can try tons of them before they find the one that’s right for them. This means that marketing stories, as opposed to platform stories, are more important than ever. Recognition, resonance and so on matter more because the one thing you (as a game maker) don’t have is the guaranteed attention that comes with a platform sugar daddy."

Sundar Pichai

"Under the rules of the license, Amazon can do that. In general, we at Google would love everyone to work on one version of Android, because I think it benefits everyone better. But this is not the kind of stuff we’re trying to prevent. Our focus is not on Facebook Home or Kindle Fire. Computing is going through a once in a lifetime explosion. Our opportunity is making sure that this works well for people and solves important problems for them. For example, you are going to have computing which can potentially warn you before you have a heart attack."

This has nothing to do with Linux... be warned

He's starting to lose us here. He seems to making some kind of point about the redesigned UI of Visual Studio 2012, but we're not sure. Let's keep moving.

It's been a week like that, from a couple of unlikely sources. :)

At this point, we'll spare you the clicks and spoil his surprise: the two sources he's talking about are The Financial Times and The Economist, each of which recently ran a story describing Windows 8 as a "failure" and suggesting that the forthcoming update, codenamed Blue, is Microsoft's attempt to apply the brakes before it turns into an out-and-out disaster. They were hardly the first.

Politics is the Study of Power

"When business or social systems are structured using a mechanical model that considers individuals as unintelligent gears having no choice but to behave in exact accordance with scripted laws and regulations, the Political Science breaks down. In truth, humans are not unintelligent mechanical gears in a machine, but thinking individuals that demand the freedom to make their own rational choices."

Economics is the Study of Wealth

"Much like the dysfunctional relationship that can arise between the Arts and the Sciences, the economic theories of Adam Smith's Invisible Hand of Emergence and John Maynard Keynes' Iron Fist of Centralized Control are in competition for acceptance. The difficulty lies in the scope of their application. Centralized Control is effective at the level of the individual. When individuals practice self-control, self-discipline, and prudence in their personal economics, society as a whole benefits from their collective generation of wealth. However, when a centralized government exerts control over individuals, while also failing to exercise self-control, self-discipline, and prudence over the collective economics, the society as a whole experiences the destruction of wealth."
