Sun Falling Behind the Canyon Wall

Just a snapshot on my way home from chilling at a campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon here in Utah. Oh and hi, it has been a while since I last posted anything. G+ has been feeling pretty dead for me for a while now. You might want to catch my posts elsewhere, like this same image on 500px:

What Would Julius Shulman Do?

I spent the evening re-watching the one and only documentary film I've ever been even remotely inspired to buy—and in this case, very strongly inspired. I just have to say, that film inspires me so hard in several aspects of my life. I never knew how much I connected with architecture before watching it, nor how fantastic architecture photography really is when it's done right. But, as a corollary, it highlights just how unbelievably bad so much arch photography really is. Honestly, even if you're just getting into it, watch this film and study Shulman. He basically invented the entire concept of beautiful architecture photography.

Experimenting With Austerity

I decided I'd give a real genuine try at making a legitimate landscape tool out of a pocketable super zoom camera. Taking into consideration its size, cost, and so on as well as the various options for processing photos (and keep in mind, my choice of camera does not output RAW) and styles that can be achieved, etc. I think it's doable. I'm targeting 12"x16" maximum sized prints. The camera is the Sony DSC-HX90V with effective focal length of 24-720mm.

So far, I've been learning some important details about how this camera operates. It likes overexposure and flattens images far too much at default settings. Luckily that's all adjustable. But it's funny. The images look far better when you compensate for that. My laziness was my enemy on this last attempt. No tripod meant lots of image shake at base ISO. Another... more »

But it's funny. The images look far better when you compensate for that. My laziness was my enemy on this last attempt. No tripod meant lots of image shake at base ISO. Another issue is that it's highly susceptible to atmospheric properties like haze on the longer focal lengths. Any long lens will do this, but, the smaller the output, it seems, the more of a visible impact it has.

Anyway, here's a couple samples from my second session of trying to take a very casual camera very seriously. Keeping in the spirit of the gear, I edited entirely in Apple's Photos app.

Any suggestions you may have on making lower end compacts sing beyond their class would be fun to hear.___

I don't always take photos of my cat...

But, when I do, it involves 3 off camera flashes and a light tent, apparently. And, of course, the subject arrives unannounced and completely uncooperative.

I was taking some product shots for some things headed towards eBay land and the cat got curious.

(For the curious cats out there: Sony RX100 IV, 3 Yongnuo flashes triggered by optical slave mode, left, right (24mm), and above (35mm), all at 1/8th plus the camera pop-up flash on auto but it's not really strong enough to do anything at 125 ISO and f/8.)

One Moon, Two Shots

One taken with $3000 worth of gear and the other taken with $430 worth.

Of course, the real differences are apparent when viewed at large magnification and it's no contest. Still, kind of a good demonstration of diminishing returns in photography equipment these days, and never mind the price difference. Consider the massive... mass difference. That $3000 gear set is about 15 times greater volume and significantly heavier.

New lens day is a good day.

Sony FE 28mm F2

Here we have one of the all time best lens values in modern photography equipment. Seriously. A lens this cheap and tiny has no business being as good as it is. Does it have serious distortion and zoom-like bokeh? Sure, but, it's razor sharp, and tiny, and cheap. Value. Plus, the bokeh is probably actually better than any zoom I've seen in this range, and all of the other flaws are corrected automatically by software. In fact, the lens is truly 26mm to make up for the field of view loss from correcting the distortion. Plus, the distortion is simple barrel which means contrast is increased in the frame, not decreased due to squishing instead of stretching to fix the flaw.

Anyway, if you're shooting Sony E-mount full frame, this lens should be owned by you.

This hobby is so sticky. ~6 months ago I didn't even have a system camera anymore. I just used an RX100 III and an RX10 in concert; that worked okay. Xmas was coming, though, and I knew I'd want that sweet, sweet bokeh. I thought, "okay fine, I'll get that nice new Sony A7 II and one lens, 55/1.8, great bokeh and general shooter, then maybe 1-2 lenses each year and live with that."

Hah. Right.

Fast forward to about a week from now and my camera gear outlay will be something like

- Sony A7 II
- Sony FE 55mm ƒ/1.8 Zeiss
- Sony FE 16-35 ƒ/4 Zeiss
- Sony FE 70-200mm ƒ/4 G
- Sony FE 28mm ƒ/2
- Canon FD 100mm ƒ/2 (+ Metabones adapter)
- Tamron 150-600mm SP Di etc. whatever + LA-EA4 adapter.

... *sigh*

I'll probably sell that Canon 100mm lens. That should even things out...

Great match for the camera. Canon nFD 100mm f/2. It gives a little bit of CA wide open but only in contrasty areas. Quite usable thanks to IBIS. Fairly portable and compact.

Sony A7 II + Canon FD 135mm F2

Took this fine pairing out for a roll in the city today. Brought home a number of keepers. Still not a huge fan of manual focus, but, it is certainly better on the A7 II than last cameras I have used.

If curious, see a few results posted to my flickr account (shots from 3/9/15): http://flic.kr/zacheryjensen

Gasp! I did wildlife. It has been a while. This is really just a selection from a series of lens tests to make sure everything is working (and get an idea of how it renders) but, I kinda like it.

The Sony A7 II + Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di USD is a surprisingly workable combo.

So, I kinda feel like sometimes photography is more fun with simpler compact cameras. Granted, I use the mother of all compacts, the RX100M3, but, still. It is what it is. My thoughts were certainly more focused on what to photograph than what to photograph it with. Light wasn't cooperative on this day, but, hey, I found a new spot to visit when it comes out to play again.

Asymmetry

So I spent some time in the city playing with my new camera. It wasn't super fruitful due to limited light from a passing storm, but, I enjoyed myself. I found a new spot or two for some new vantage points. All-in-all, a nice evening.

And of course my twitter feed, which is more active than G+ for me these days: http://twitter.com/@_ztj

This image was made with the wonderful little Sony RX100 Mark III

Unearthed Roots

Erosion has revealed the roots from a very old pine tree making their way through dirt, clay, and even rocks.

Oh hi there, me.

No, not metaphorical or even figurative. Literally me, in that eye... doing ridiculous photographer things with my arm. Woo! Gotta love super sharp lenses and high resolution cameras, amirite?

FWIW, Google refuses to show me the preview of this upload in the order I specified. Let's hope it works out anyway.

A Summer Scene

What more is there to say except you can find this over on 500px and Flickr for higher quality viewing experiences (or buying prints if so inclined on 500px).

Two Thirty-six Megapixel Cameras

But, which is which? Can you tell? I found a screamingly great deal on a Sony A7R. So, I decided to do some comparing of my own. I didn't like the image quality coming out of the A7 for a handful of reasons. Some of those are bound to still apply to the A7R in some situations, but, it was the whole pile that got me with the A7.

I can tell you that I am already significantly more impressed by the A7R's image quality. And that shutter noise? Totally overblown. Yes it's longer. Just sounds like the first gen NEX cameras. No big deal. AF feels like NEX-7 to me, maybe a little faster. I loved the NEX-7.

Anyway, this comparison was made with the same lens. Admittedly, adapted on the A7R versus the other camera. But it shouldn't matter as the crops come from near the center of the frame. Can you tell which is which?

Since you can't rely on the website or app to reproduce the image at 1:1 ratio, or even to avoid horribly compressing it, there's a link here to the full thing as well.

Support Aneutronic Fusion-based Energy Production

This group is doing great work and could really use some support for the last mile effort this year!

We're talking a very viable form of energy generation by way of aneutronic fusion (focus fusion). A vastly simpler system that directly converts the output of the reactor into electricity without a complicated heat generation -> turbine cycle involved. No waste at all. No neutrons generated. Just sweet, sweet electricity. Harnessed lightning.

These guys are small and independent. It would be excellent to see a breakthrough come from pure science and entrepreneurship unencumbered by the taint of huge, blind government funding *cough* ITER *cough*

So get in there and push a little.
