Gmail update

A few days ago, we pushed an update to the Android Gmail app with some useful new features and a nice UI refresh:

- sectioned inbox
- sliding drawer with labels and account switcher 
- sender images shown alongside messages (tap on images to multi-select)
- swipe-down to refresh
- improved HTML email readability 
- ability to empty trash

Introducing Google Keyboard – smart and easy typing on Android

Starting today, you can get the smart-and-easy Nexus typing experience on your Android phone or tablet, by downloading Google Keyboard on Google Play: http://goo.gl/W63Lu

Google Keyboard has Gesture Typing (which lets you glide through letters to form a word, just lift your finger to enter a space), automatic error correction, and word predictions. You can also tap the microphone to compose messages with Voice Typing when you’re on-the-go. Together with dictionaries for 26 languages (plus keyboard layouts for a dozen more), it provides a fast, accurate, and reliable typing experience.

What’s that song? Let Google help you find out! In December, we made the Sound Search widget for Google Play available in the Play store (http://goo.gl/M3a44). And here's a cool tip for music fans who are using the latest version of the Google Search app for Android:

You can now tap the microphone button in the search box on your homescreen. Within moments you'll see a music button appear telling you that Google hears the music too. Just tap the button to launch a music search and discover the name of the song and artist, and instantly buy the track on Google Play. 

Sound Search is currently available to users in the United States with the latest version of the Google Search app, for devices running Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, and above.

As you may have heard, the Google Now team put out a great update today (read more here: http://officialandroid.blogspot.com/2012/12/new-google-now-perfect-travel-companion.html).

My favorite feature? Sound Search integration! Now you can just say "What's this song?" or "What song is this?" and it will recognize it for you, without ever leaving Google Now. It even speaks the result back to you ("It's Sleepyhead by Passion Pit"). Very very handy!

Last week, Popular Science dubbed Google Now the “Innovation of the Year” (http://goo.gl/OPRnE). We sat down with Baris Gultekin, Andrew Kirmse and Ben Gomes, who all played a part in creating Google Now. 

How did the project start?
Andrew: Google Now started when a few of us on the Maps team thought there was some really useful information we could show you on your phone based on where you are, and so we started working on it in our spare time, as a 20% project (as many projects at Google start). The further we got on the project, the more compelling it became, and everyone saw the potential of it.

We discovered a bug in the Android 4.2 update, which makes it impossible to enter December events in optional fields of the People app (this bug did not affect Calendar). Rest assured, this will be fixed soon so that those of you with December birthdays and anniversaries won't be forgotten by your friends and family.

Expanding Google Play Security Protections

Keeping our users’ information safe and secure is a top priority. We automatically scan Google Play to block and remove harmful apps. Now, with Jelly Bean Android 4.2 devices that have Google Play installed have the option of using Google as an application verifier. We will check for potentially harmful applications no matter where you are installing them from.
