Gustavo Franco1,547I've started an experiment with my Google+ account disabling this circle (Googlers and Xooglers) from showing up on my home stream. I'll see how it will look like without my coworkers and former coworkers. In case you are wondering how to adjust and even disable the posts from a circle showing up in your home stream, read:https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1269165?hl=enI've moved the circle to be the 1st on my bar though so I still can easily peak at what folks are saying.  In case you are wondering how to do that, read:https://plus.google.com/113895942978964425455/posts/igWgAhX22qM2014-02-15 23:38:47324301

AJ Durling294This is a bonus circle, and is actually pretty much where I started when I was creating my first circles - Top 500 PlussersIt is the people with the highest number of users - and is actually now only 308 people. When I first collected the Top 500 Plussers on Google+, I spend a lot of time weeding out the people whose posts in which I didn't particularly have an interest (e.g. almost all of the photographers - nothing against people who post photos to G+, it's just me: this is Google+, not Flickr; people who only ever promote themselves - so quite a lot of the pop musicians). The list that is left are people who, I think, actually contribute to the stream. You may find some surprising choices (Dolly Parton?! Actually, yes!). But I hope you enjoy it.I've kept the name Top 500 even though it is a lot fewer than 500. I like the irony... #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #celebrity   #topcircles  2012-10-19 15:06:56307302

Chris Hoyt1,112Circle Back to GoogleLooking for people who work at Google? Here's a great circle that's a strong addition to any search you've already performed on Google Plus and that I'd include with any other search for Googlers that you've already conducted. What's interesting to me (and that I'm getting around to pointing out) is that whether you're just looking to expand your network as a member of Google+ or actively #recruiting and #sourcing online, I believe that you'll find infinite value from the proper care and feeding of Google Plus circles. In fact, if done correctly (and maintained) it's a fantastic way to filter your Google Plus stream and check the pulse of any company, organization or interest group. In the event you missed it, I did an article back in August that mentioned my interest in Circles and how I'd be exploring the management of them. (http://www.recruiterguy.net/recruiting-management-circles) So far, I've not been disappointed in the ability to really hone in on an area of interest by filtering my streams based on these circles and simply watching the conversation flow. Of course, being able to quickly see all of the updates from a particular company or interest group is just the start. The more proficient we get with our filtering, the easier it is to get the latest from fun entrepreneurs, CEO's, diversity interest groups, active and passive jobseekers and more - these are just a few of my own circles, mind you. You have the ability to filter by profession, seniority, geography, language, etc.The possibilities are endless!I'd love to hear how you, or others, are using circles to manage the information stream you've found in G+ so far.2012-01-04 20:07:36348211

And remember that every single funny step in this was refined after many many shipments. The wheel pits, the "cut a ten inch cutout here",  "you should see three threads" and "you'll need two people to do this and will here this sound" all represent probably some poor assembly team going "Aw crap, we can't do this unless we cut this out, which would have been nice to know an hour ago..."

The bevelled pins are my favorite, they seem designed to help a rando guy in the middle of a pacific island somewhere without a torque wrench use "two finger pressure on an 8 inch wrench" and not destroy the wing root during flight with a connector that is too tight.

Guess who's back...

Google Summer of Code 2015 is on!

Back in 2005, Google made a commitment to support open source software contributors. In addition to our other programs to build and support the contributor base, we thought a great way to get more people involved was to introduce the wide world of open source to college students.

Google Summer of Code is an innovative program dedicated to introducing students from universities around the world to open source software development. The program offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects mentored by a wide variety of carefully selected open source projects. Our goal is to help these students pursue academic challenges over the summer break while they create and release open source code for the benefit of all. Over the past 10 years, over 8,300 mentors and 8,500 student developers in 101 countries have produced a stunning 55 million lines of code. Our goal is to help these students pursue academic challenges over the summer break while they create and release open source code for the benefit of all.

Spread the word to your friends! If you know of a university student that would be interested in working on open source projects this summer, or if you know of an organization that might want to mentor students to work on their open source projects, please direct them to our Google Summer of Code 2015 website where they can find our timeline along with the FAQs. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!___Guess who's back...

Islands of Kesmai for the win....This is a great essay.

I've been unable to look away from this whole "quinnspiracy" trainwreck for a while, so I don't remember where I first saw this post. (Via +Yonatan Zunger maybe?) The whole thing is disgusting, for all the reasons that have been amply discussed by others.

But the fact that these assholes have adopted the whole "gamerz" identity at all is particularly irritating to me, because they stole it from me in the first place.

One of my earliest memories is being absolutely riveted by Pong. I had my mind blown by Combat when the Atari 2600 launched. I was desperately frustrated because my grandmother had a Nintendo Entertainment System before I did, and she would legit kick my ass at OG Super Mario Bros. seven different ways before breakfast. (I did, however, beat Ganon before she did; she got stuck on him because the whole silver arrow thing didn't occur to her.)

These subhuman "gamer" douchebags built their community on the Internet, you say? Oh really. I was playing games before there was a fscking Internet. My wife got stuck at Monkey Island for entire years at a time -- repeatedly -- because there was no GameFAQs to cheat with. I remember when multiplayer gaming meant grudgingly handing the controller to your sister. I grew up on co-op games that involved inviting my friends over every Saturday to play Secret of the Silver Blades together.

I remember feeling secretly defensive when my buddy showed me Sonic on his Genesis. (Nintendo über alles!) When I got my first Unix account I spent untold hours playing Star Trek. When I got my first X account I spent even more hours playing netrek.

I don't typically like first person shooters because to me they'll always just be DOOM with better graphics. For that matter, I remember when "shooter" meant a top-down bullet-hell; who decided to rename that genre to "shmups", and on whose authority?!

That's my story. And the best you punks have is that you spent hours looking for Mewtwo on the SS Anne? Please hold for a moment while I laugh in your face, because I spent more time than that trying to find the equally-mythical secret truck in Spy Hunter on my friend's Commodore 64.

So to these wankers who claim ownership of what it means to be a gamer, I have a message: I am the guy with the legitimate claim to "gamer" as my identity, you assholes. You merely adopted gaming; I was born in it, molded by it. And I say with far more authority than any of you CoD camping Halo griefing brogamer asshats that women belong in gaming. They belong more than you do, in fact.

The real issue here is that you're afraid of getting your asses handed to you by your grandmothers. But the truth is, you're not really a gamer until you have.

Hardware Initiative at Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab

Posted by Hartmut Neven, Director of Engineering

The Quantum Artificial Intelligence team at Google is launching a hardware initiative to design and build new quantum information processors based on superconducting electronics. We are pleased to announce that John Martinis and his team at UC Santa Barbara will join Google in this initiative. John and his group have made great strides in building superconducting quantum electronic components of very high fidelity. He recently was awarded the London Prize recognizing him for his pioneering advances in quantum control and quantum information processing. With an integrated hardware group the Quantum AI team will now be able to implement and test new designs for quantum optimization and inference processors based on recent theoretical insights as well as our learnings from the D-Wave quantum annealing architecture. We will continue to collaborate with D-Wave scientists and to experiment with the “Vesuvius” machine at NASA Ames which will be upgraded to a 1000 qubit “Washington” processor.___Yes.

Enjoy :-)

Just over a year ago, we announced the Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge—committing not to sue any user, distributor, or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked. Our goal was to encourage pro-competitive, defensive uses of patents to support open-source innovation.

Today we’re expanding the Pledge for a third time to include an additional 152 patents related to technologies that help deliver fast, secure experiences on the web, including encryption, XML parsing and prefetching. We’ve also added 5 additional patents related to the MapReduce data-processing technology created at Google.

Visit our website for more information and stay tuned for additional expansions of the Pledge: https://g.co/opnpledge. ___Enjoy :-)

A reminder appears from the past!

The leaked New York Times digital innovation piece is really really interesting reading, in particular given my previous work.  One of the most salient points that  was pointed out was "Only one percent of readers write comments and only three percent of readers read comments. Our trusted-commenter system, which we hoped would increase engagement, includes just a few hundred readers."

The thing about that is that that percentage of readers who write comments on NYT is really close to the percentage of Slashdot readers who would submit stories.  Sure, back when I was still there much much higher percentages of people would read comments - or even post them.  But the 1-3% of readers in most news publications are the ones who end up creating the vast vast amount of content.

Why does this matter to you?  Because look at where you are reading, look around at Twitter.  Remember when people said they were "netizens"?

Meh.  I could also just be cranky and tired from being on this plane so late, and another hour to go.___A reminder appears from the past!

Excellent!

Music was made to be loved. We just made loving it easier. With Google Play Music for Chrome, you can now keep all the music you love in the cloud so that you always have it. To add new music, enable the “Google Play Music for Chrome” lab at play.google.com/music/listen#/labs. Then simply drag and drop songs into your Google Play Music library. If you have a lot of music in iTunes or if you want new music to be added automatically, you can configure this by clicking “Add Music” at the top right of play.google.com/music.

But, wait, there’s more! This new lab has extra goodies. You can now open a handy mini-player by clicking the arrow in the bottom right corner of our web app so you can see what’s playing or skip songs from any tab. Plus, download songs, albums and playlists directly from the web. Let us know what you think!

We built this lab using Chrome Apps and Native Client technology, developers can learn more at developer.chrome.com/apps/about_apps and developer.chrome.com/native-client. Uploads, downloads and the mini player are just the start, and we are excited to push the boundaries of what’s possible on the web.___Excellent!

Thank goodness, I was worried I was going to have to become a belter. (NIven fans, I speak to you!)

If this result is reproducible -- and I suspect it will be -- the consequences for physics are extraordinary. (Among other things, it will explain why electric charge is quantized)

No time to write a lengthy explanation right now, so this one is mostly for the technically minded of you in the audience. The experiment article was published in Nature, and those bastards appear not to have even posted it on the arXiv, so only people willing to deal with Nature (which I'm basically not) can see it at the moment. The theory article, on the other hand, is here: http://arxiv.org/pdf/0903.4732.pdf . The theorists basically wrote a paper giving fairly detailed experimental instructions for how to build a Dirac monopole in the spin field of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, and the experimentalists did it and it worked. I'd call this a very clear sign that no, nature doesn't have some kind of trick up its sleeve preventing the existence of monopoles.

Hey, maybe Blas Cabrera's famous monopole was the real thing after all...

(Bonus points in the theory article for studying how this synthetic monopole would decay when you turned the power off. It flies off the edge and transforms into a boojum. I can't think of a more appropriate thing for a magnetic monopole to decay into.)___Thank goodness, I was worried I was going to have to become a belter. (NIven fans, I speak to you!)

Coming soon – Intel® Galileo Development Board – Arduino Certified. We will have these in stock soon, this is the sign up page. Galileo is a microcontroller board based on the Intel® Quark SoC X1000 Application Processor, a 32-bit Intel Pentium-class system on a chip (datasheet). It’s the first board based on Intel® architecture designed to be hardware and software pin-compatible with Arduino shields designed for the Uno R3. Digital pins 0 to 13 (and the adjacent AREF and GND pins), Analog inputs 0 to 5, the power header, ICSP header, and the UART port pins (0 and 1), are all in the same locations as on the Arduino Uno R3. This is also known as the Arduino 1.0 pinout.

Interesting movements for future aspiring multi-centenarians...

Just over two months ago Larry and I launched Calico. We said then that with the right goals, culture and people, we believe we can make good progress on health and well-being, in particular the challenge of staying youthful, healthy and disease-free for a longer time.

Today I am pleased to announce that four of the brightest and most accomplished individuals in the fields of medicine, drug development, molecular biology and genetics have joined Calico.

• Hal V. Barron, M.D.
• David Botstein, Ph.D.
• Robert Cohen, M.D.
• Cynthia Kenyon, Ph.D.

Hal Barron is one of the most respected clinician-scientists and successful drug developers in the biotechnology industry. Hal will join us as President, Research and Development. Hal was most recently Executive Vice President, Head of Global Product Development and Chief Medical Officer of Hoffmann-La Roche. There he was responsible for all the products in the combined portfolio of Roche and Genentech.  Barron joined Genentech in 1996 as a clinical scientist. During the next several years, he held positions of increasing responsibility and leadership within Cardiovascular Research and Specialty Therapeutics. In 2002 Barron was promoted to vice president, Medical Affairs. In 2003 he became the senior vice president of Development and in 2004 he was appointed chief medical officer. In 2003 he became the senior vice president of Development. In 2004 he was appointed chief medical officer and in 2009 he was appointed executive vice president.

Prior to joining Genentech, Barron received his Bachelor of Science in physics from Washington University in St. Louis, his Medical Degree from Yale University and completed his training in medicine and cardiology at the University of California San Francisco. Barron’s academic positions include Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been issued several patents for his work in thrombosis and angiogenesis and has published more than 90 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

David Botstein is one of the world’s leading geneticists, and will join Calico as Chief Scientific Officer. He comes to us from Princeton University, where he was Director of the Lewis-Sigler Institute from 2003-2013, and where he remains the Anthony B. Evnin Professor of Genomics. David was educated at Harvard (A.B.) and the University of Michigan (Ph.D.). He taught at MIT (1967-1987); became Vice President at Genentech (1987-1990), and then Chairman of Genetics at Stanford (1990-2003). He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1981 and the Institute of Medicine in 1993. Among his awards are the Eli Lilly Award (1978),  the Genetics Society Medal (1988), the American Society for Human Genetics Allen Award (1989), the Rosenstiel Award, 1992, the Gruber Prize in Genetics (2003), the Albany Medical Center Prize (2010), the Dan David Prize (2012) and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2013).

Botstein contributed to the discovery of transposons in bacteria and an understanding of their physical and genetic properties. He devised genetic methods to study the eukaryotic cytoskeleton in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), notably general ways of detecting gene interactions. In 1980 he made theoretical contributions to human genetics by suggesting, with collaborators, a way to map human disease genes with DNA polymorphisms called restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). This became a cornerstone of the new science of genomics. He later founded the Saccharomyces Genome Database (with J. Michael Cherry) and applied DNA microarray technology (with Patrick O. Brown) to study genome-wide gene expression, notably defining thereby clinically significant subtypes of human tumors. Most recently, he has been devising and using genome-scale methods for studying system-level regulation of gene expression and gene interactions. At Princeton, Botstein established a new introductory science curriculum that combines biology, physics, chemistry, and computer science.

Bob Cohen will be joining as a Calico Fellow, in a role that will span R&D and Business Development. Bob was most recently Senior Oncology Fellow at Genentech. Bob joined Genentech’s Research organization in 1994 from University of California, San Francisco, where he trained in hematology and oncology and served as Assistant Professor in Residence in the Cancer Research Institute. During his first decade at Genentech, Bob participated in leadership roles that contributed to the development of several of the company's ground-breaking cancer drugs. He joined Business Development full-time in 2004 and was appointed Senior Oncology Fellow in 2008. Over the past several years he has focused on the development of antibody-drug conjugates, a means of delivering targeted chemotherapy to tumors. He is an inventor of nine issued U.S. patents.

Bob has a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Amherst College and an M.D. with Distinction in Research from the University of Rochester. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan and is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology.

Cynthia Kenyon is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the molecular biology and genetics of aging and life extension, and will be joining Calico as Senior Scientific Advisor. In 1993, Cynthia’s pioneering discovery that a single-gene mutation could double the lifespan of healthy, fertile C. elegans roundworms sparked an intensive study of the molecular biology of aging. Her findings showed that, contrary to popular belief, aging does not “just happen” in a completely haphazard way. Instead, aging is a regulated process controlled by specific genes. Using C. elegans, she has now discovered many evolutionarily-conserved life-extending genes and pathways. In particular, her findings have led to the realization that a universal hormone-signaling pathway influences the rate of aging in many species, including humans.

Cynthia graduated valedictorian in chemistry from the University of Georgia in 1976. She received her Ph.D. from MIT in 1981 and was a postdoctoral fellow with Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner in Cambridge, England. Since 1986 she has been at the University of California, San Francisco. Cynthia is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and she a former president of the Genetics Society of America. She has received many scientific awards. Currently, she is an American Cancer Society Professor at UCSF, and she directs UCSF’s Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging, positions she will continue, while she joins Calico on a part-time basis.

We invite you to stay tuned over the following months as we continue to build out our team of exceptional scientists and clinicians.___Interesting movements for future aspiring multi-centenarians...

Important Culinary Question about which I'll have emprical evidence about shortly:

If one makes Canelés in the same oven as a pizza will:

1) The canelé smoke infuse into the pizza a delicate vanilla/butter/rum taste?
2) Make the canelé taste of pizza toppings?

Yeah, I should probably pre-bake the canelé..

I'll be in the audience for this one.

Conflict has persisted in all times and places. Today, we see that connectivity is changing how it manifests, for good and ill. On Monday, October 20, at the “Conflict in a Connected World” summit, Google’s Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, will participate in a live Hangout where he will explore the nexus between technology and conflict.

The summit is being hosted by Google Ideas, in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations and the Gen Next Foundation.___I'll be in the audience for this one.
