The meatspace equivalent to not wiping your devices before getting rid of them...

They say no press is bad press...

When Texas plumber Mark Oberholtzer traded in his black Ford F-250 pickup truck, he expected it would live a second life in the hands of new owners, but probably not these owners.

Oberholtzer's Texas City plumbing company, Mark-1 Plumbing, has been inundated with threats after a photo of his old Ford work truck appeared on a terrorist Twitter feed, equipped with an anti-aircraft gun in the bed and still bearing the company logo on the door.___The meatspace equivalent to not wiping your devices before getting rid of them...

This so pisses me off.

Warning - rant ahead...

There seems to be a new trend in fundraising by FLOSS Foundations of sending automatic "renewal invoices" for corporate memberships/sponsorships. I've gotten 3 in the last 3 weeks.  Most corporations, at least in the US, including Google, use (aka require the use of) purchase orders. When you send an invoice without a pre-issued PO# on it, the invoice will be rejected. Full stop. Please - save everyone some time and DON'T SEND AN INVOICE BEFORE YOU GET A PO#.

And before you start to explain how much better your automatic invoice system is for your org: don't bother. The PO# requirement is not up to me, there is nothing I can do about it, I don't like it either and arguing with me won't change anything.

Thanks in advance!___This so pisses me off.

And remember that every single funny step in this was refined after many many shipments. The wheel pits, the "cut a ten inch cutout here",  "you should see three threads" and "you'll need two people to do this and will here this sound" all represent probably some poor assembly team going "Aw crap, we can't do this unless we cut this out, which would have been nice to know an hour ago..."

The bevelled pins are my favorite, they seem designed to help a rando guy in the middle of a pacific island somewhere without a torque wrench use "two finger pressure on an 8 inch wrench" and not destroy the wing root during flight with a connector that is too tight.

Guess who's back...

Google Summer of Code 2015 is on!

Back in 2005, Google made a commitment to support open source software contributors. In addition to our other programs to build and support the contributor base, we thought a great way to get more people involved was to introduce the wide world of open source to college students.

Google Summer of Code is an innovative program dedicated to introducing students from universities around the world to open source software development. The program offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects mentored by a wide variety of carefully selected open source projects. Our goal is to help these students pursue academic challenges over the summer break while they create and release open source code for the benefit of all. Over the past 10 years, over 8,300 mentors and 8,500 student developers in 101 countries have produced a stunning 55 million lines of code. Our goal is to help these students pursue academic challenges over the summer break while they create and release open source code for the benefit of all.

Spread the word to your friends! If you know of a university student that would be interested in working on open source projects this summer, or if you know of an organization that might want to mentor students to work on their open source projects, please direct them to our Google Summer of Code 2015 website where they can find our timeline along with the FAQs. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!___Guess who's back...

Islands of Kesmai for the win....This is a great essay.

I've been unable to look away from this whole "quinnspiracy" trainwreck for a while, so I don't remember where I first saw this post. (Via +Yonatan Zunger maybe?) The whole thing is disgusting, for all the reasons that have been amply discussed by others.

But the fact that these assholes have adopted the whole "gamerz" identity at all is particularly irritating to me, because they stole it from me in the first place.

One of my earliest memories is being absolutely riveted by Pong. I had my mind blown by Combat when the Atari 2600 launched. I was desperately frustrated because my grandmother had a Nintendo Entertainment System before I did, and she would legit kick my ass at OG Super Mario Bros. seven different ways before breakfast. (I did, however, beat Ganon before she did; she got stuck on him because the whole silver arrow thing didn't occur to her.)

These subhuman "gamer" douchebags built their community on the Internet, you say? Oh really. I was playing games before there was a fscking Internet. My wife got stuck at Monkey Island for entire years at a time -- repeatedly -- because there was no GameFAQs to cheat with. I remember when multiplayer gaming meant grudgingly handing the controller to your sister. I grew up on co-op games that involved inviting my friends over every Saturday to play Secret of the Silver Blades together.

I remember feeling secretly defensive when my buddy showed me Sonic on his Genesis. (Nintendo über alles!) When I got my first Unix account I spent untold hours playing Star Trek. When I got my first X account I spent even more hours playing netrek.

I don't typically like first person shooters because to me they'll always just be DOOM with better graphics. For that matter, I remember when "shooter" meant a top-down bullet-hell; who decided to rename that genre to "shmups", and on whose authority?!

That's my story. And the best you punks have is that you spent hours looking for Mewtwo on the SS Anne? Please hold for a moment while I laugh in your face, because I spent more time than that trying to find the equally-mythical secret truck in Spy Hunter on my friend's Commodore 64.

So to these wankers who claim ownership of what it means to be a gamer, I have a message: I am the guy with the legitimate claim to "gamer" as my identity, you assholes. You merely adopted gaming; I was born in it, molded by it. And I say with far more authority than any of you CoD camping Halo griefing brogamer asshats that women belong in gaming. They belong more than you do, in fact.

The real issue here is that you're afraid of getting your asses handed to you by your grandmothers. But the truth is, you're not really a gamer until you have.

Hardware Initiative at Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab

Posted by Hartmut Neven, Director of Engineering

The Quantum Artificial Intelligence team at Google is launching a hardware initiative to design and build new quantum information processors based on superconducting electronics. We are pleased to announce that John Martinis and his team at UC Santa Barbara will join Google in this initiative. John and his group have made great strides in building superconducting quantum electronic components of very high fidelity. He recently was awarded the London Prize recognizing him for his pioneering advances in quantum control and quantum information processing. With an integrated hardware group the Quantum AI team will now be able to implement and test new designs for quantum optimization and inference processors based on recent theoretical insights as well as our learnings from the D-Wave quantum annealing architecture. We will continue to collaborate with D-Wave scientists and to experiment with the “Vesuvius” machine at NASA Ames which will be upgraded to a 1000 qubit “Washington” processor.___Yes.

Enjoy :-)

Just over a year ago, we announced the Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge—committing not to sue any user, distributor, or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked. Our goal was to encourage pro-competitive, defensive uses of patents to support open-source innovation.

Today we’re expanding the Pledge for a third time to include an additional 152 patents related to technologies that help deliver fast, secure experiences on the web, including encryption, XML parsing and prefetching. We’ve also added 5 additional patents related to the MapReduce data-processing technology created at Google.

Visit our website for more information and stay tuned for additional expansions of the Pledge: https://g.co/opnpledge. ___Enjoy :-)

A reminder appears from the past!

The leaked New York Times digital innovation piece is really really interesting reading, in particular given my previous work.  One of the most salient points that  was pointed out was "Only one percent of readers write comments and only three percent of readers read comments. Our trusted-commenter system, which we hoped would increase engagement, includes just a few hundred readers."

The thing about that is that that percentage of readers who write comments on NYT is really close to the percentage of Slashdot readers who would submit stories.  Sure, back when I was still there much much higher percentages of people would read comments - or even post them.  But the 1-3% of readers in most news publications are the ones who end up creating the vast vast amount of content.

Why does this matter to you?  Because look at where you are reading, look around at Twitter.  Remember when people said they were "netizens"?

Meh.  I could also just be cranky and tired from being on this plane so late, and another hour to go.___A reminder appears from the past!

Excellent!

Music was made to be loved. We just made loving it easier. With Google Play Music for Chrome, you can now keep all the music you love in the cloud so that you always have it. To add new music, enable the “Google Play Music for Chrome” lab at play.google.com/music/listen#/labs. Then simply drag and drop songs into your Google Play Music library. If you have a lot of music in iTunes or if you want new music to be added automatically, you can configure this by clicking “Add Music” at the top right of play.google.com/music.

But, wait, there’s more! This new lab has extra goodies. You can now open a handy mini-player by clicking the arrow in the bottom right corner of our web app so you can see what’s playing or skip songs from any tab. Plus, download songs, albums and playlists directly from the web. Let us know what you think!

We built this lab using Chrome Apps and Native Client technology, developers can learn more at developer.chrome.com/apps/about_apps and developer.chrome.com/native-client. Uploads, downloads and the mini player are just the start, and we are excited to push the boundaries of what’s possible on the web.___Excellent!
