Shawna Mac22,734Canadian Circle Share - Evening EditionHappy Friday!  Last week there were a few Canadian circle shares and I was circled by a bunch of new Canucks, so I'm sharing mine this week as it is brimming with fresh, active Canadians and will help those new to G+ get some great content in their streams.  Slight emphasis on Nova Scotians mebbe. If you are a Canadian or a new circler and want me to add you, please comment below and I shall be happy to do so (but please have your about me filled out with something other than Viagra ads!)I <3 my Canadians (and I'm notifying you so you know where all the new people are coming from)#Canada #Canadiana #NovaScotia #circleshare #circlesharefriday2013-05-11 00:08:5950128920

David Waddington2,952Sharing 500 Canadians circle. This circle is bigger and I tried to change it so that it was only 500 but when you delete someone from circle it deletes them from all circles. Really weird. I will share part 2 tomorrow but I honestly don't know who of the 668 are not included. If someone can help me fix this issue it would be appreciated because I would like to be able to include everyone that I can.If you are Canadian or living in Canada and not included in this circle leave a comment and I will make sure you are added to part 2.+Amanda Blain perhaps there are some Canadians in this circle that were not in the one you shared.Oh, for those of you that haven't filled out your profile page yet it is a good idea to do so. Stating in your profile the things that interest you will increase the possibility of you being added to circles. Not everyone adds people because they are Canadian.2012-10-15 00:26:015011506
David Waddington2,256An updated Canadian's on Google+ circle.Feel free to share. If you are a Canadian and would like to be added to this circle just make a comment. David Waddington2,233I am sharing my circle for Canadians that are on Google+I try to add as many as I can. If you are not in this circle and wish to be added just make a comment. If your comment gets plus 1'd by me then you have been added. I will share this circle again at a later date with new additions.I also have a circle for users in Edmonton. If you are in Edmonton and wish to be added just note in your comment that you are in Edmonton.  I have added quite a few users from Edmonton in the last while. One thing I have noticed is many haven't filled out their profile. If you wish to have people follow you it's a good idea to fill out a profile and put it in why people might be interested in following you.Lets grow our circles!  :) #circleshare #circles #circlesharing #circleshared  2012-07-16 00:35:063512004

Susanne Ramharter8,399Friday is for sharing circles - here are my hand picked Top Engagers this is my 'go to' circle - it is hand picked and, if I had to limit my contacts to just one circle of 500, though I would certainly miss many people - this group would have absolute priority in my personal circle of 500.This group is international, smart, funny, and most of all, extremely nice and friendly, always ready to help someone new, speak words of encouragement, provide food for thought or just intelligent jokes. (very few cat pictures - but, occasionally....)Check them out, I can honestly recommend every single one!feel free to share, or recommend people that are your favorites2012-04-27 15:19:1512724316

Susanne Ramharter3,133Fridays are for sharing circlesto the new people who have put me in their circles: many thanks! Some of you I have already had contact with, to the rest, I would like to reciprocate with this circle. It is hand-picked, and contains people who are funny, intelligent, knowledgeable, and engaged. You will find information about social media, google+, as well as cognitive science, books, travel and art, some agitation against encroaching on civil liberties (SOPA, ACTA, censorship - mostly from me ;-) inspirational as well as snarky things, and yes, the occasional cat. But everyone here is friendly and has great things to contribute, so feel free to share the circle if you like.Have fun!2012-03-09 15:46:5631329719
Susanne Ramharter2,244To the many people who have circled me lately, thank you! Some of you are new to Google+ and looking for interesting people and conversations. My view is that being social is fun, enjoying good photographs is fun, snark is lots of fun.But sometimes I feel the need for a special kind of substance, people who consistantly provide intelligent posts and engagement. That is when I go to this circle.Warning: these are not necessarily the "cool kids" with gazillions of readers. But they regularly provide intelligent, thoughtful and often fun discussions. So if that is what you want, engage!Feel free to share, also, if you know of anyone I could/should add to this circle, please comment, otherwise, enjoy.2012-02-24 20:56:23119314

P E Sharpe14,199Blame Canada, redux...O Canada. A shared history, a shared circle. The Postmodern Condition is a small but significant tome: published in French in 1979 and translated into English in 1984, it is arguably the singlemost agent provocateur in the resultant march towards Political Correctness, AKA dispensing with grand narratives in favour of social relativism. Why am I telling you this? Well, let me point you to Wikipedia: "The Postmodern Condition was written as a report on the influence of technology on the notion of knowledge in exact sciences, commissioned by the Québec government. Lyotard later admitted that he had a 'less than limited' knowledge of the science he was to write about, and to compensate for this knowledge, he 'made stories up' and referred to a number of books that he hadn't actually read. In retrospect, he called it 'a parody' and 'simply the worst of all my books'.[4] Despite this, and much to Lyotard's regret, it came to be seen as his most important piece of writing." There's more, but I'll save that for another time.Without further ado, here is my updated and revised O Canada shared circle. Approach with caution. The editor of this circle accepts no responsibility for any global insurrections caused by any individual included in this circle, or for their anger at being circled by a bunch of G+ yahoos they don't know. #OCanada #sharedcircles #sharedpubliccircles +Shared Circles on G+2012-02-10 23:54:083001418

“That might include minor changes to existing drugs which might be combining two existing drugs in the same pill, but actually it treats the same condition. [Under the draft chapter] companies would be granted a patent for that and have an extended monopoly period for that innovation,” he said.

He said Australia had appeared to join with the US and Japan in backing so-called “evergreening” tactics, when pharmaceutical companies try to extend their monopoly over a drug by patenting new formulas or methods that are “not genuinely innovative in terms of their therapeutic value”.

“That might include minor changes to existing drugs which might be combining two existing drugs in the same pill, but actually it treats the same condition. [Under the draft chapter] companies would be granted a patent for that and have an extended monopoly period for that innovation,” he said.

Trish Hepworth of the Australian Digital Alliance said some of the most worrying elements of the leaked agreement related to criminalisation of breaches and 100-year copyright terms for authors. The alliance represents libraries, universities, schools, technology companies and consumers.

“We see, for example, a push to criminalise any form of recording of a movie in a movie theatre, no matter how long or whether anybody else ever sees it,” Hepworth said. “It’s ridiculous overkill that would mean kids larking around with smart phones while the previews are on will be committing criminal offences.”

Hepworth said the document showed the negotiations had advanced closer to agreement. She warned any agreement would set global norms for trade, given the member countries account 40% of the world’s gross domestic product.

“It is essential we reject the most draconian proposals on the table and support other countries who are seeking to implement flexible and positive language,” she said. “With the digital, cultural and innovative industries set to drive much of our future economic prosperity, we need our international agreements to support our national interest.”

Critics, including the consumer group Choice, have urged the Australian government to release the full text of the TPP agreement before signing up to it to ensure consumers are not adversely affected by the agreement, which would essentially trump Australian law.___

It is easy to look to religion for an explanation of why young men — and some women — become radicalized. But it is psychology, not theology, that offers the best tools for understanding radicalization — and how best to undo it.

The appeal of Islamic State rests on individuals’ quest for what psychologists call “personal significance,” which the militant group’s extremist propaganda cleverly exploits. The quest for significance is the desire to matter, to be respected, to be somebody in one’s own eyes and in the eyes of others.

A person’s sense of significance may be lost for many reasons, such as a personal failure or a stigma that comes from transgressing the norms of one’s society.

We are reminded of this when we examine the backgrounds of female suicide-bombers in Israel. The first female suicide-bomber in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was divorced by her husband after she was found to be infertile. Another would-be bomber had been disfigured by burns, believed to have been caused by her family, after she had an affair. These women suffered from personal stigma and went on to volunteer for suicidal missions against the Israelis.

Loss of significance can also be caused by hopeless economic conditions. It can grow out of a sense of disparagement and discrimination, a not uncommon experience of many immigrants. And it can come from a sense that one’s brethren in faith are being humiliated and disgraced around the world.

Ideological extremists like those leading Islamic State deliberately employ the ideas of collective hardship and victimization of Muslims worldwide to galvanize and recruit potential jihadists. In a 1997 interview with CNN, Osama bin Laden fulminated: “The mention of the U.S. reminds us before everything else of those innocent children who were dismembered, their heads and arms cut off …” Another senior Al Qaeda leader, Yehia Al Libi, stoked anger and indignation by saying: “Jihad in Algeria […] is your hope […] from the hell of the unjust ruling regimes whose prisons are congested with your youths and children, if not with your women.”

The appeal to one’s trampled identity, combined with the depiction of one’s group’s degradation, can have a profound visceral effect, incensing and redirecting individuals who are otherwise well-adjusted and on their way to a seemingly bright personal future.

According to reports, Nasser Muthana, a 20-year-old volunteer in Islamic State, had acceptance offers from four medical schools. Muhammad Hamidur Rahman, who died in August while fighting in Syria, was employed at a Primark store in the coastal city of Portsmouth, United Kingdom, and had a father who owned a restaurant. His personal future thus appeared assured and yet it could not undo the pain and humiliation he saw his Muslim community facing.

Extremist ideology is effective in such circumstances because it offers a quick-fix remedy to a perceived loss of significance and an assured way to regain it. It accomplishes this by exploiting humans’ primordial instincts for aggression and sex.___

Lockheed estimates that less than 25 kg (55 lb.) of fuel would be required to run an entire year of operations. The fuel itself is also plentiful. Deuterium is produced from sea water and is therefore considered unlimited, while tritium is “bred” from lithium. “We already mine enough lithium to supply a worldwide fleet of reactors, so with tritium you never have too much built up, and that’s what keeps it safe. Tritium would be a health risk if there were enough released, but it is safe enough in small quantities. You don’t need very much to run a reactor because it is a million times more powerful than a chemical reaction,” McGuire notes.

Although the first-generation reactors will have radioactive parts at the ends of their lives, such as some steel elements in the shell, McGuire says the contamination situation “is an order of magnitude better” than that of contemporary fission systems. “There is no long-lived radiation. Fission reactors’ stuff will be there forever, but with fusion materials, after 100 years then you are good.” Contamination levels for fusion will improve with additional materials research, he believes. “It’s been a chicken-and-egg situation. Until we’ve had a good working fusion system, there has not been money to go off and do the hard-core materials research,” McGuire says. “So we believe the first generation is good enough to go out and do, and then it will only improve in time.” Old CFR steel shell parts can be disposed of with “a shallow burial in the desert, similar to medical waste today. That’s a major difference to today’s fission systems.”

Operational benefits include no risks of suffering a meltdown. “There is a very minimal amount of radioactive tritium—it’s on the order of grams—so the potential release is very minimal. In addition, there is not enough to be a risk of proliferation. Tritium is used in nuclear weapons but in a much larger inventory than would be involved here, and that’s because you are continually making just enough to feed back in [to maintain the reaction],” he adds.___

Not all of the remissions lasted, the report showed. Nineteen patients in the study remain in remission 2 to 24 months later, and 15 of them didn’t need any additional treatment. Seven patients relapsed between 6 months and 9 months after their infusion; those included three people whose cancers spread beyond the blood cells the new treatment targets. Five patients left the study for alternative therapy.

The numbers are remarkable because these patients had cancer return as many as four times before they joined the study, including some whose cancer had returned after stem cell transplants, said Carl June, the leader of the research team and an immunotherapist at the University of Pennsylvania. In other words, these people were the sickest of the sick.

The Poodle attack relies on the adversary first setting up a man-in-the-middle attack to grab control of the victim's Internet connection. One way to do that is to set up a malicious Wi-Fi access point in a public location such as a coffeeshop. Attackers also need to be able to run Javascript code inside the victim's browser.

"It [Poodle] requires someone to be a man-in-the-middle to exploit. This means you are probably safe from hackers at home, though not safe from the NSA. However, when at the local Starbucks or other unencrypted Wi-Fi, you are in grave danger from this hack," Graham wrote.

So there already are a few things you can do to prevent potential Poodle attacks from succeeding. As we've said time and time again, don't hop willy-nilly on to public Wi-Fi networks or guest networks operated by people you don't know. Even if you aren't worried about Poodle, man-in-the-middle attacks are serious and you protect yourself by being careful about what networks you connect to.

If you need to get on a public network, use VPN, whether from your workplace or any of the many VPN services available. There are quite a few out there, such as PrivateInternetAccess, CyberGhostVPN, and AnchorFree's HotSpot Shield, to name a few.

Attackers will likely trick users into visiting a malicious Web page designed to execute specially crafted Javascript code. Be careful about what sites you visit and be on the lookout for phishing sites.

Scientists have developed a new battery that can be recharged up to 70 per cent in only 2 minutes. The battery will also have a longer lifespan of over 20 years. Expected to be the next big thing in battery technology, this breakthrough has a wide-ranging impact on many industries, especially for electric vehicles which are currently inhibited by long recharge times of over 4 hours and the limited lifespan of batteries.

The absence of resonant frequencies and stress concentration points made the structures more earthquake resistant. During earthquakes, the dry-stone walls built by the Incas would move slightly and resettle without any damage. Rounded corners and an incline of three to five degrees contributed to their stability.

Architect Ronald Rael recently told Wired: “While this was an experiment in connectivity, we have been able to create 3-D printed parts that are much stronger than reinforced concrete in compression. We are also working on increasing the tensile strength of our materials using reinforcement fibers.”___

His latest work is the amazing Bow-House in the Netherlands, which is designed as an open shelter where anyone can temporarily live, free of charge.
The Bow-House is based on a flexible system and it can be assembled in any public space with an empty wall. Ideal for nomads, this “graffitectural project” is a vertical extension of the property that adds a glazed and functional layer to an existing building. The home is made using scaffolding framework and salvaged windows and doors assembled into a random patchwork.

A report from China’s Xinhua news agency claims that Tesla is working on a new graphene battery that could almost double the range of the Model S to some 500 miles. This follows up on Musk’s assertion that Tesla could offer a 500-mile battery “soon”, but only if it makes financial sense.
Graphene could be what makes long-range EVs finally viable, though the technology has been in the works for some time now. As well as increasing energy density, graphene also allows for faster charging of batteries, opening the ion-highway to faster fill-ups. Whichever company can come up with a long-range, fast-charging, and (most importantly) fiscally viable electric car battery will be at a huge advantage going forward. Tesla needs to be that company if the $5 billion battery Gigafactory is going to be the game changer Musk thinks it will be.

Tesla needs to be that company if the $5 billion battery Gigafactory is going to be the game changer Musk thinks it will be.
A 500-mile Tesla Model S would all but eliminate the effects of range anxiety and could give Tesla the means to dominate the growing electric car market. That would be more driving range than even most conventional cars offer, though the price would likely be in the six-digits…at least at first. The average driver rarely exceeds 100 miles of total driving per day, and 200 miles per charge seems to be the magic number the Tesla Model III is aiming for. Then again, Musk seems confident that there hasn’t been a legitimate battery advancement yet, and that when it does comes, Tesla will know about it first.
Could a graphene-anode battery be the technology that puts Tesla at its place on top of the EV market? Or is there another technology (like aluminum-air batteries) that Tesla is trying to develop?___

you have refined the concept, worked out good detailing, but somehow tighten it up, with diagrams, do a snappier narration over illustrations, i need to do the same thing myself, so good on you to just do it, i needed a prod!

i would put an above ground pool in the middle, with foam board all around, and use solar absorbers to replenish, and build a bubble plastic tent around the tank and a circle of deep beds around it!

full of good factuals!

Tracking an aircraft : While there has been must consternation of the Malaysian airliner MH370 which has 'disappeared', the relatives of the people are understandably inconsolable. This does bring the whole tracking systems used into question. I decided to do some digging into the various technologies available. The system currently used is highly dependent on Radar, and a the transponder in the aircraft pinging back. Here is what I found.... it's open to discussion on cost etc, but there is a lot to digest.

Article Extract: ACARS Messaging : Modern aircraft can communicate with airline operations bases and sometimes with the headquarters of its manufacturers automatically to send maintenance alerts known as ACARS messages. It was this system that sent out the hourly pings, apparently over several hours, the sources said. (Reuters: http://goo.gl/SgVwXB) Honeywell detail on ACARS (http://goo.gl/IHzqxE). See more on the story.

ADS-B : ADS-B, which consists of two different services, "ADS-B Out" and "ADS-B In", will be replacing radar as the primary surveillance method for controlling aircraft worldwide. In the United States, ADS-B is an integral component of the NextGen national airspace strategy for upgrading or enhancing aviation infrastructure and operations. (From +Wikipedia http://goo.gl/rkVlJm) (More on ADS-B from Planefinder.com http://goo.gl/OVHXzv )

Radar : Radar only extends so far. Most of us  understand that air traffic controllers typically use radar to monitor a flight's progress. That's all very well over land. But radar also has a limited range, and you can't put a radar station in the middle of the ocean. So pilots often have to stay in contact through other means, such as periodic radio check-ins. In between check-ins, the controller has only a general idea of where a plane is and where it's headed. (from Washington Post http://goo.gl/1FgN71)

Proba-V Tracking : s Proba-V has become the first satellite to pick up aircraft tracking signals, allowing aircraft across the globe to be followed in flight from space. Though Proba has been deployed to map vegetation growth. ESA Link http://goo.gl/erFCeM

Wi-Fi : WiFi would almost certainly have helped. Mobile devices on the plane would have been communicating with the Internet right up until its other communications systems went down. But Malaysia Airlines does not appear to offer in-flight WiFi. http://goo.gl/BDcVbH

Iridium satellite constellation : The constellation consists of 66 active satellites in orbit, and additional spare satellites to serve in case of failure. Satellites are in low Earth orbit. (See http://goo.gl/ou4oGu). Fueled by aircraft power and highly portable, the Iridium aircraft tracking devices provide aircraft operators with: automatic flight following, geofencing, two-way text messaging, emails and confirmation capabilities.Using Iridium-enabled technology, aircraft tracking units have made it possible for the DOI aircraft operators to transport personnel and cargo throughout the Alaskan region. (Edited article: http://goo.gl/8dI6Vy )

Using TV signals to track aircraft : Passive radar relies on existing signals, such as television and radio broadcasts, to illuminate aircraft. This involves using multiple antennas to listen out for signals from broadcast towers, and for reflections of those signals that have bounced off aircraft, and comparing the two. Passive radar requires a lot of processing power, but because there is no need for a transmitter, it ends up being cheaper than conventional radar.  See more at http://goo.gl/4wpRIr

Flightradar : It's not a technology by itself but uses the ADS-B and Radar used by aircraft ( see aircraft here http://www.flightradar24.com )

A significant dump of wet snow across much of B.C.'s South Coast is causing headaches for travellers, after flights were delayed at major airports in Vancouver and Victoria began to run out of deicing fluid.
A spokeswoman for Vancouver International Airport said snow removal operations were in full effect Monday morning and the airport was fully staffed and equipped to handle the winter weather, but as of 11 a.m. PT there were close to 50 flights listed as delayed.
Some flight cancellations and delays are reportedly due to poor conditions at other airports.

Wagstaffe's Weather: Snowmageddon for some
Harbour Air and HeliJet cancelled flights out of Victoria Harbour Monday morning, and Victoria International Airport reported that it was facing a shortage of deicing fluid.
The airport authority said that if temperatures stay cold, many more delays and cancellations could be expected.
Power outages, school closures
Heavy snowfall from two storms that rolled in over the weekend created traffic headaches on B.C.'s South Coast Monday. (CBC)
Snow continued to fall across much of the South Coast Monday, with accumulations varying greatly depending on location and elevation.
While some sea-level areas have seen almost no snow stick over the weekend, parts of Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley have accumulated up to 30 centimetres.
Heavy snow overnight across parts of Vancouver Island forced a number of school closures.
Poor weather conditions also contributed to a number of power outages.
BC Hydro spokeswoman Simi Heer said thousands of customers in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley lost power Sunday night, including 4,300 in Surrey, 3,100 in White Rock, 4,100 in Maple Ridge, 12,000 in North Vancouver and 2,000 in Burnaby.___

I am surprised you did not mention the Russian satellite due to fall back to earth today.  Head's up for those on the Pacific Coast -- if you see something burning in the sky -- you may be witnessing sateliite re-entry.
