Limits of Control - Wem Gehören Unsere Daten?2013-07-12 10:00:006

#MyOpenHA Part 1 - Philosophy

Home Automation. The holy hipster and geek grail. I have played with it. I have tried. I have failed. But today I am proud to have a solution I can truly endorse. So join me on this journey. This series will explain my solution, in excruciating detail. In the hope that I can learn from you while I am explaining. This series will be filled over time with more and more articles. But now, let’s talk about philosophy. The Why. Soon you will see the What and How. One promise, or the TL;DR: It is all 100% Open Source.

I am quite satisfied. Reconfigured my Node-RED setup to make it far simpler. The dashboard extension makes it all look really nice. Will get some cheap android tablets that I will use as super luxury wall switches. And my Roomba is cleaning up after I clicked the button. Ain't life cool?

Managed to configure node-red and hue2mqtt as proper services with systemd. So now my home automation should be quite solid in case of an (unexpected) reboot of the Raspberry Pi. Hooked up my existing Roomba control to node-red and can now happily press a button to get my apartment clean. Yay!

Added #hue2mqtt to the mix and can now happily control my Philips #Hue lights with #nodered too! And it works in all directions. When I switch off the lights with my Philips Hue remote, the switches on my browser automagically change status too. So cool!

Next three little projects: hook up a #NodeMCU with two relays so I can roll up and down my projector screen with MQTT, put an ESP8266 in my Roomba so it also talks and listens to MQTT and finally another ESP8266 with a Maxim 232 so it can control the projector via MQTT.

For all those that subscribe to the myth of EU overregulation: Read this. From the US. https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2016-Apr/icp013_3.pdf

1. SCOPE
This specification establishes a recommended procedure for determining the identity of an externally threaded fastener as a bolt or as a screw.

2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Bolt
A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed for insertion through the holes in assembled parts, and is normally intended to be tightened or released by torquing a nut.

2.2 Screw
A screw is an externally threaded fastener capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, of mating with a preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and of being tightened or released by torquing the head.

And that's just the beginning ;-)

Every year, Buzzfeed rounds up all the things women are told they can't wear. Here's the list from 2015. Unlike 2014, we made it last year year without any new outright bans on trousers, though mandatory "feminine" dress prevailed in formal occasions on one instance.

The eagerness with which the world polices the female body is truly outrageous, especially when you look at all these things at the same time. The message we're sending is chilling.

Does this exist either for iOS or Android?

Sort all apps on the homescreen (or in some other list view) according to how often they are used. So that you know which apps are needed and which can be deleted because you don't use them that often.

I just put

alias pbcopy='xclip -selection clipboard'
alias pbpaste='xclip -selection clipboard -o'

in my .bashrc. It's really simple. It allows you to pipe terminal output into the standard clipboard buffer so you can just CTRL-V the stuff into a GUI program. pbpaste is the other way round. MacOS uses these commands and they actually are quite useful to also have on Linux :-)

Example: cat whateverfile.txt | pbcopy and after that use CTRL-V to paste it into gedit or a text input in a web page.

Or mark a snippet on a web page with the mouse, CTRL-C and pbpaste >> whateverfile.txt

You might have to install the xclip package first, I ahd to on RHEL 7.

Playing around with #KBFS , the #keybase Filesystem. IMHO the better dropbox for people that care about security. I am officially impressed.

My public (and thus signed) files are at https://keybase.pub/jwildeboer/ for those of you who have not yet installed the keybase app (It's open source, available for Linux, Windows, MacOS X).

If you are using Keybase and have the current version installed, you ofcourse just cd /keybase/public/jwildeboer to see my stuff.

Now for the really cool thing: If you are using keybase and your username is, for example thatotherperson, you just cd /keybase/private/jwildeboer,thatotherperson and we immediately have a shared folder with end to end encrypted content. Magic!

More information at https://keybase.io/docs/kbfs

Dear +Google with the release of Duo, your shiny new videochat app, you have officially lost me. The sheer number of apps needed to use my Google account is getting ridiculous. Do I still need Hangouts now? Or does Duo do all of that too? And what's with that other new chat app that I've already forgotten about? I am sorry, but you really are on the wrong path IMHO.

What is wrong with you, #Australia? The Nauru abuse stories and now this.

"alleged physical assault, including being punched, pulled and kicked.

The use of physical restraints among children was widespread, with 32 reporting being held down with belts or chairs, or being sat on or held down by a member of school staff.

A further 28 students report being detained in unsuitable structures which were referred to as "time out" or "calm rooms". These included spaces such as cupboards, storerooms and disused buildings with windows blacked out and lights turned off."
