Asteroid 1998 QE2 will make its closest pass to Earth on May 31 at 1:59 p.m. PDT, writes +Deborah Netburn. "This is a really big asteroid, similar in size to the one that killed off the dinosaurs, and it's getting very close to us," said Amy Mainzer, who tracks near-Earth objects at +NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge. There is no chance that asteroid 1998 QE2 could collide with Earth this go-around; its next close approach won't be until 2119.

President Obama today ruled out unilateral U.S. military action in Syria even if proof emerges that Syrian forces have used lethal chemical weapons.
"This is … an international problem," he said during a news conference. "It's not going to be something that the United States does by itself. And I don't think anybody in the region would think that U.S. unilateral actions … would bring about a better outcome."

More than 2 million people can vote for mayor of Los Angeles. But if history is a reliable guide, as many as 1.6 million of them will skip Tuesday's election.
