Asteroid 1998 QE2 will make its closest pass to Earth on May 31 at 1:59 p.m. PDT, writes +Deborah Netburn. "This is a really big asteroid, similar in size to the one that killed off the dinosaurs, and it's getting very close to us," said Amy Mainzer, who tracks near-Earth objects at +NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge. There is no chance that asteroid 1998 QE2 could collide with Earth this go-around; its next close approach won't be until 2119.

President Obama today ruled out unilateral U.S. military action in Syria even if proof emerges that Syrian forces have used lethal chemical weapons.

"This is … an international problem," he said during a news conference. "It's not going to be something that the United States does by itself. And I don't think anybody in the region would think that U.S. unilateral actions … would bring about a better outcome."

More than 2 million people can vote for mayor of Los Angeles. But if history is a reliable guide, as many as 1.6 million of them will skip Tuesday's election.

That low turnout could mean that the winner will garner fewer votes than any newly elected mayor since the pre-freeway era of the 1930's, according to a Times analysis of L.A. election records.

Federal prosecutors secretly obtained telephone records from more than 20 lines belonging to the Associated Press and its journalists in an attempt to learn who leaked information on how the CIA thwarted an apparent terrorist plot hatched in Yemen.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, was convicted of killing three babies said to have been born alive and cleared in the death of a fourth, who prosecutors say let out a soft whimper before he snipped its neck. Gosnell was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the drug-overdose death of a patient who had undergone an abortion. The jury will return Tuesday to hear evidence on whether he should get the death penalty.

Kidnappings, suicide bombings and hundreds of violent deaths have bloodied Pakistan’s campaign trail. Still, the parliamentary vote Saturday is being heralded as a milestone in the country’s democratic advancement.

“This Is Spinal Tap” will return in its original format June 11 and also will feature a black cover and black inner sleeve in a gatefold package with the original liner notes (from the Rocklopedia Brittanicus) and all 11 songs featured in Rob Reiner’s 1984 rockumentary, “This Is Spinal Tap.”
