Epic Ice Cubes

We’ve just updated Tasks with some awesome iciness!
One of the core ideas of this update is to have greater integration with the Android Ecosystem. We now support third-party widgets both on your home screen (Android Agenda Widget, Pure Calendar Widget, etc...) and on your lock screen (Dash Clock). And creating a task from Google Now turns out to be as simple as starting a sentence with the words Note to self.

We take the integration further by supporting related emails for tasks added by Gmail and the ability to snooze reminders.

Another aspect of improvements was general usability, where we introduce alphabetical sort mode, an indicator for overdue tasks, an improved calendar picker and more.

For a list of new features and improvements, check out the complete change list below.

Third party widget support coming

Hello everybody. We are currently developing third party widget support, so that you can view your tasks on your favorite calendar/tasks widget. We have an early preview of an API ready for developers, so if you are interested contact us at tasks.android@gmail.com. Furthermore, we are contacting the developers of Agenda Widget, Simple Calendar Widget and Pure Calendar Widget. If your favorite third party widget is not among those, let us know which widget you use so that we can also contact its developers.

Thank you
Team Tasks

#AndroidDev
Android Protip to make lists with dynamically loaded images butter smooth

Assume you have list with items, each item containing an image which is dynamically loaded from a server. A placeholder is shown if the image hasn’t been loaded yet, and as soon as it is loaded, it gets faded in.

Technically speaking, ImageView.setImageDrawable gets called with the loaded image (which hopefully is loaded and decoded in a thread with lower priority than the main thread) as soon as the image is ready. So what could be a problem with that?

If we take a look at the source code (https://github.com/android/platform_frameworks_base/blob/master/core/java/android/widget/ImageView.java#L390), we see that if the drawable doesn’t have the same intrinsic bounds (basically the width and height of the bitmap), a layout pass gets scheduled with the requestLayout() call. Jelly Bean love

We’ve just updated Tasks with some Jelly Bean awesomeness, adding support for the new notifications and adjusting the layout for 7 inch tablets. Yes, you might remember that we did have a specific design for 7 inch tablets since day 1, but now that we actually own these devices we made some slight adjustments to further improve the experience. We are seeing a huge demand by Nexus 7 owners and are happy to announce that the Nexus 7 has been our most popular device for new installs over the past few days. The primary reason must be that they are selling like hotcakes, but we’re sure that the extra $25 Play Store credit doesn’t hurt either. All in all it seems like an awesome boost to the ecosystem.

If you do not own a Jelly Bean device (yet), rest assured that we still support Android 2.2 and up and that the new 7 inch design applies for any supported devicein th... more »

Android #protip: How to properly do split views on tablets

TL;DR: Look at the pictures, but also look at them if you are reading; it’s hard to understand otherwise:)

#androiddesign, #androidui, #uidesign, #uipattern

With the Nexus 7 out, Android tablets are finally in the spotlight. One of the most used UI patterns on a tablet is the split view. In the split view, two views which fill a whole screen on the phone are displayed next to each other on the tablet. For example, you might have a list on the left and the selected content on the right. On the 10 inch tablet, many apps with a split view use it in both portrait and landscape. Notable examples are Settings, Talk and People. Other apps use the split view only in landscape on a 10 inch tablet. Examples are Gmail, Google Reader and Tasks by +Team Tasks  (of which I am one of the developers).

Translations

Today we started to translate our app into several languages. In order to get as many languages as possible, we need your help! If you think your language shouldn't be left out and you are willing to contribute, read the details below. All translators will be mentioned in the app in addition to other benefits :-)

Here are the details: You can start translating right away: http://www.getlocalization.com/tasks/ If your language is not yet there, you should add it. Please note that you need an account to translate.

As a reward, we will mention your name in a dedicated about screen for the translators. In addition, we can provide you with free unlock keys (to remove the ads from the free version) for you, your close family and some of your friends. We are very generous, but please don't abuse it :-)

To organize the names of the... more »
