Google+ has Launched the Ability for Brands to Offer Coupons to Followers

This is a huge plus for brands! Let's clarify here.. this is NOT Google putting ads into the stream. If you follow brands you like, they now can offer a coupon for you to check out. This is like following a fan page on Faceybook and them making a post about a coupon (just its easier to claim here) THESE ARE NOT the ads you see on the side of Faceybook.

Brands can now directly interact with fans of their product and provide value offers to them....

I look forward to seeing more great things from brands here on gplus. Discount tickets to events, free make up samples, or 50% off an item in their store from brands I like and follow? Sounds good to me.

P.s. to see the offer below click here - https://plus.google.com/u/0/104111246635874032234/posts/PMXjgjR4bNt Below is just asc... more »

David Amerland is spot on! It's all about the data. A perfect algo with a small sample can't hold a candle to another algo with a huge sample, even if that algo is only mediocre.
And Google's algos seem to be far from mediocre.

In a similar case, Andrew Auerheimer explored an open API on an AT&T server. No hacking, just looking through the window of an open server. Since then his life has been less than successful. No crime committed, no money lost, just made a major corporation look silly.

The end of the month is coming up quick. If you want to help Save the Manatee Club by buying jewelry, now is the time!

http://animalcharms.net/fishjewelry/manatee.php

20% of every piece of jewelry sold this is being donated to help those adorable manatees. You can get a dog, cat, horse or even dragonfly jewelry, and still help!

But remember, it all ends on March 31st.

They seem to have some sharp folks involved. Time will tell how well accepted it'll be, of course. I agree, even an independent set of standards that members can pledge to meet, and a reference point for consumers to gauge risk by will be a plus.

#somethingtothinkabout
The New (Ab)Normal

Portion sizes have been growing. So have we. The average fast food meal today is more than four times larger than it was in the 50s. And adults are, on average, 26 pounds heavier. The culture of “supersized” meals has been growing slowly but surely re-educating us in the process of what a single meal portion actually is. Today, many of us have no clue.

Why did it happen in the first place? Essentially, it all comes down to the amount of money the manufacturer can make of a single purchase. It very soon became clear that selling more of the same with a slightly increased price but in a larger quantity could give a higher profit margin rather than the same item bought twice. Think about the production and delivery costs and the paper work it takes to service one single item in your menu. It costs less to sell you a biggerburge... more »

Cleaning Up Your Link Profile Before You Disavow Those "Bad" Links

When Google released the Disavow tool it was hailed by many as the ultimate solution to all of their link building woes. It appeared to be the easy way out of years of link building abuse. Unfortunately for many, this hasn't been the case at all. Many people have filed Disavow petitions only to be told that they need to do more, or be told nothing at all.

The problem comes from not being able to contact many of the sites that link to you. Whether you were responsible for gaining those links, or they were placed in an effort to instigate some form of negative SEO is irrelevant to Google, the links remain, therefore the penalty remains. What is a webmaster, or hired gun SEO, to do when there are still links to be removed but no way to do so?

I took a comment from John Mueller in... more »

Introducing: BLOG+

We have a new website at www.logit.net as of today, but we don't have a website blog, nor do we ever plan on having one.

It's obviously not because we couldn't build ourselves one, or open an account with Wordpress.com, no.

It's because our personal experience is telling us we'd be better off blogging on Google+. Why on Earth, you might ask yourself, when Google could just take this toy away from us?

1. Google+ ain't going away any time soon. Rumors about the Ghost Town are written by people who don't (know how to) use Google+.
2. It's a thousand times easier to get sharing and interaction, and therefore exposure, on Google+ than it would be on our new website.
3. Everything you need in a blog, is already implemented into Google+: ma*r*kd-o-wn, powerful commenting... more »

Aaron's Law - Balancing Criminal and Civil Law in Computer Crimes

By now every one knows, or has at least heard, the story of Aaron Swartz.  Arron was a brilliant person how fought for what he believed in and in the end, paid the ultimate price at his own hand.

Aaron was prosecuted under felony charges for what any one with a reasonable view of life and computers would view as an incredibly minor issue. Even JSTOR, to site involved, stepped back and was content to let the issue drop. But, a federal prosecutor was hell bent to make her bones on the back of some kid who committed a computer crime. It didn't matter that no one lost anything, it didn't matter that it would ruin him financially, it didn't even matter to her that the people who were wronged felt the issue was over. She used the law to make a name for herself.

American law has become atw... more »

The Right Way To Use Press Releases

There has been a lot of debate the last couple of weeks about Press Releases and their value since Matt Cutts made the comment that they have almost no SEO value. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/webmasters/O178PwARnZw/discussion

This was, of course, followed by "tests" that showed that they did work. The test used a nonsense word on arguably one of the more powerful personal blogs out there. (Matt's blog). Since the blog now ranked for that term they declared victory and moved on. Too bad they were wrong too.

We've used press releases for years, not for SEO (although that was a great perk) but for real traffic and outreach. For example, a few years back Elkhart, Indiana, was declared the white hot center of the economic meltdown and was even visited by President Obama. The RV industry had beenn... more »

This is Victoria Soto. She is a hero. Share her story.

"She took her kids, put them in the closet and by doing so she lost her life protecting those little ones," Soto's cousin, Jim Wiltsie.

"She was found huddled over her children, her students, doing instinctively what she knew was the right thing. I'm just proud that Vicki had the instincts to protect her kids from harm," he continued.

"It brings peace to know that Vicki was doing what she loved, protecting the children and in our eyes she's a hero," he added.

Some things communities need pronto:

1. The ability to 'lock' a category from anyone posting in it.
2. The ability to quickly move a post from one category to another.
3. The ability to add a sticky 'Category Description' at the top of each one.
4. The ability to "turn off" spam notifications.

Other than those things...they are working out well for me so far!

Hello, all-

I'm 60 years old, retired from my business management consulting career in 2008. I started studying SEO in 2003, when I built my first site for a client. I built several more and started putting into practice what I was learning, and of course, I made a lot of mistakes along the way.

As a total noob to SEO, I wasn't comfortable charging for it, so I focused on SEO copywriting and after a couple of years of freelancing, I opened my full-time copywriting service in 2010. My partner and I founded a new venture the end or 2011, and expanded our offering to include full-service SEO as well as content strategy and copywriting. (http://topshelfcopy.com)

I've been spoiled for years, working for myself, and frankly, I'm a bit of a curmudgeon, so it's probably just as well. But I'm enjoying the SEO game immensely, and have every intention of... more »
