kick start a documentary about modern standards for measurement

The project was started by Amy Young about two years ago but needs your support for editing existing footage. ht scientific advisor and co-investor
+Michael Trott

Let us raise this question and answer: YES!

"Should the average person be able to understand where their standards come from?"

"The State of the Unit documentary follows a historic decision in the field of metrology: to redefine the kilogram through a relationship of fundamental constants of physics, specifically Planck’s constant h.

Since 1889, a “kilogram” has been defined to be the mass of a specific platinum-iridium cylinder, secured in a vault outside of Paris. But measurements every few decades since then have shown that the mass of the cylinder is changing.

Take a look at Microsoft's new research project, a touch based web IDE
To develop Windows 8 apps in a fun and easy way with touch

It is definitely an experimental touch-centric IDE from Microsoft Research (MSR). https://www.touchdevelop.com/app/

- It's own semi visual programming language.
- It allows you to develop and design any Windows 8 UI.
- Web based, develop right in your browser with touch. Even on the iPhone
- Includes offline access as well.
- Syncs to the cloud automatically.
- It is predictive, it would know what code you anticipate to write, and the context you are in to suggest what to type. Something like a type-ahead intellisense. Natural Language Code Synthesis Engine!
- And you can sign in with your Google account :) And Facebook/Microsoft account.
- etc

Give it a try, the people at MSR worked really... more »

I wish the Google+ execs would stop mouthing off and fix their service

I've been spending more time here lately. Last week I went through all my 12,000+ contacts one-by-one to get my contact list up to date and cleaned up (that's what I ended up with, I actually had 30,000 entries in http://contacts.google.com when I started).

Then I was going through my Google+ contacts and looking at each one, working to clean up my circles and get ready to spend a lot more time here.

Lately I'll be honest: I've been spending a lot more time over on Facebook for a lot of reasons. I'm not alone in that. Over on Mashable they have an article showing that the average person spends many hours per month on Facebook while only a few minutes here on Google+: http://mashable.com/2012/11/28/social-media-time/

Then, today, I saw this article, or, rather, set of... more »

BIS report: vicious cycles  shadow banking etc: "Most importantly,
authorities should continue forcing banks to bring leverage down – and keep it there by preventing them from deploying new instruments and tactics that
would push it back up. But such efforts should not stop with traditional banks. Prudential authorities everywhere still face the challenge of putting in place robust regulations that extend to the shadow banking sector."

new kind of compiler, automata in LLVM 3.1

"We added new TableGen infrastructure to support bundling for Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architectures. TableGen can now automatically generate a deterministic finite automaton from a VLIW target's schedule description which can be queried to determine legal groupings of instructions in a bundle.

We have added a new target independent VLIW packetizer based on the DFA infrastructure to group machine instructions into bundles."

Cytoskeletal Signaling: Is Memory Encoded in Microtubule Lattices by CaMKII Phosphorylation?

Travis J. A. Craddock, Jack A. Tuszynski, Stuart Hameroff

Memory is attributed to strengthened synaptic connections among particular brain neurons, yet synaptic membrane components are transient, whereas memories can endure. This suggests synaptic information is encoded and ‘hard-wired’ elsewhere, e.g. at molecular levels within the post-synaptic neuron. In long-term potentiation (LTP), a cellular and molecular model for memory, post-synaptic calcium ion (Ca2+) flux activates the hexagonal Ca2+-calmodulin dependent kinase II (CaMKII), adod... more »

Breaking Chemistry News!

"The periodic table of elements just got a bit heftier Friday, as the names of three new elements were approved by the General Assembly of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

Elements 110, 111 and 112 have been named darmstadtium (Ds), roentgenium (Rg) and copernicium (Cn).

These elements are so large and unstable they can be made only in the lab, and they fall apart into other elements very quickly. Not much is known about these elements, since they aren't stable enough to do experiments on and are not found in nature. They are called "Super Heavy," or Transuranium, elements.

The General Assembly approved these name suggestions proposed by the Joint Working Party on the Discovery of Elements, which is a joint body of IUPAP and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry... more »

Looks like time's up. Let's hope this is not Lehman Brothers 2.0.

The Greek referendum call is, while it lasts, effectively a plebiscite on euro membership. Papandreou announced on Monday that he would put a hard-fought rescue deal to a referendum. I say "while it lasts" because the opposition is mobilising a parliamentary manoeuvre to bring down the government, which may succeed - returning Europe to its status quo of containable trauma.

If Greeks reject the 50% controlled default on the debts they owe to the banking sector, then the arithmetic I revealed on Newsnight on the eve of the Euro summit comes into play - without a 50% haircut, and a further 130bn euro bailout, on top of 110bn, Greek debt spirals out of control and the country goes bust.

At this point, the value of the debt falls to maybe 10% of its face value and Greece has broken all the rules... more »

This is a very cool AI challenge from Google, let the AI games begin.

Want to prove to Google that you’ve got some serious programming chops? Then you better prepare yourself for war. Ant war. The Fall 2011 AI Challenge, sponsored by the giant of search engines, is now underway and pits programmers against one another as rulers of virtual ant colonies. Write code that teaches your pixelated ants how to find food and conquer rival ant hills and you could come out on top. More than 4000 users have already signed up, with 13,000+ games played so far. Check out a typical AI ant vs AI ant match in the video below. While relatively low tech, the Google AI Challenge ant game is designed to pull in a new horde of amateur and semi-professional programmers. The winners of today’s challenge could be tomorrow’s innovators of artificial intelligence.

Evolutionary Timeline The Big Bang happened 14 billion years ago. Life arose nearly 4 billion years back . "Our brains have never before needed to be able to comprehend such vastness of time. A decade is probably the longest duration of time that our brains can correctly imagine." Now try a million, or a billion years. It is not surprising then, that some people reject this incomprehensible vastness for "a shorter, emotionally more pleasing yet incorrect number of about 6,000 years for the age of the Universe." Check out this very cool evolutionary timeline, drawn to scale. Drag the time slider through eight telescoping sections. There's a lot happening.

The Sanders Report Highlights Serious Conflicts of Interest at the Federal Reserve:
For example: The Fed provided $16 billion in financing to General Electric while Jeffrey Immelt, the CEO of General Electric, served as a director on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Jeffrey Immelt is also Pres. Obama's Jobs Czar and oversaw General Electric when it received a $1.1 billion tax refund from the IRS last year despite making over $10 billion in profits in 2009.
