Measuring how much it rains in your backyard can be done with a plastic rain gauge. But if you were to add up all the official meteorological rain gauges throughout the world, they would cover the area of about two basketball courts. Scientists need more data, more frequently, over more of Earth's surface. Enter the Global Precipitation Measurement mission, a joint effort between NASA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other international partners.

Most climate models predict that in a warming world, wet areas will get wetter and dry areas will get drier. But scientists will need comprehensive rain observations going into the future to see what changes are taking place. The GPM mission will ultimately swarm Earth with nine satellites and be able to measure nearly all global rainfall every three hours. The GPM Core satellite, which will unify the measurements into one global... more »

NASA Television will provide live coverage of the upcoming U.S. spacewalk conducted from the International Space Station beginning at 7 a.m. EDT. The spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. and run about 6 1/2 hours.

Space station Expedition 35 Flight Engineers Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn of NASA will inspect and possibly replace a pump controller box on the station's far port-side truss, designated P6, suspected of leaking ammonia coolant. This will be both Cassidy's and Marshburn's fourth spacewalk.

A leak of ammonia coolant from the area near or at the location of a Pump and Flow Control Subassembly was detected on Thursday, prompting engineers and flight controllers to schedule this spacewalk. The device contains the mechanical systems that drive the cooling functions for the electronics that support the solar power monitoring and generation systems.

14 year old discovers iPad2 kills heart patients in their sleep!
If a person falls asleep with the iPad2 on the chest, the magnets in the cover can “accidentally turn off” the heart device, said Chien, a high school freshman in Stockton, California, whose father is a doctor. “I definitely think people should be aware. That’s why I’m presenting the study.”

Those seven minutes should be, in a word, unpleasant. The upside is, after seven minutes, you’re done.

Space Station Leaking Vital Coolant, NASA Says. Unsure if this leak is the same one investigated in 2012 spacewalk, other leak in 2007
"The space station uses chilled liquid ammonia to cool down the power systems on its eight giant solar array panels. A minor leak of this ammonia was first noticed in 2007, and NASA has been studying the issue ever since. In November 2012 two astronauts took a spacewalk to fix the problem, rewiring some coolant lines and installing a spare radiator due to fears the original radiator was damaged by a micrometeorite impact.....if they lose the ability to cool that particular solar array, it won't be able to generate power for the station. In fact, the leak has worsened to the point that Mission Control expects that particular loop to shut down within the next 24 hours."

Worth reading

Reading some of the comments makes me want to stop living on this planet. But knowing some awesome gamers who abhor this behavior and not only don't tolerate it, but actively speak out against it, restores me.

People stop doing this to other people. Please. Now. Thank you.

"Instead of simply accepting that hundreds of thousands of women very openly have genuine passion for these things, this man and many others like him try to suggest that women are falsely trying to lure them in. Not only is this attitude hugely egocentric, it also promotes huge amounts of negativity and encourages the ‘testing’ of women who like these things. It creates an obscene and close-minded standard where, unless a woman proves she likes something, people will assume she’s doing it in attempt to market herself."
