Here's an article I wrote about some techniques and tricks that are essential for new photographers. Well the tricks aren't really essential, but by practicing them you will learn about the importance of shutter speed and aperture.

Please give it a share if it's useful, or you know a newbie photographer. Thanks :)

I took this photo in 2011 at the world's largest salt lake in southern Bolivia. I uploaded another version of this photo just after I took it, but I've revisited it and have done some extra work to it.

I hope you enjoy my photo of Salar de Uyuni.

An article about how aperture affects your flash's exposure.  Very useful if you're getting starting with flashes...

I haven't been doing much shooting recently, I've been busy working on some other projects. I did go and take a few shots of the Thames and Tower Bridge the other evening so I'll post the results up soon.

Thanks to all the people who have added me recently, I'll add you back when I get time to go through the list.

In the meantime here is a new travel blog post about 5 really interesting cemeteries worth visiting. Please share if you like it.

Cheers,
Matt.

Self portrait - practising off camera flash. I'm not much of a model but the background is cool.

Simple one light, camera left (obviously) set up. Shot through a curtain to soften the light. Still fairly harsh but I like shadows.

Accidentally left it in rear curtain sync and you can see the shutter at the bottom.

One thing I've noticed with Google+ is a lot of people are making the same mistake that they did with Twitter. It's the Dance For Me, Monkey Boy problem. People sign up to a service, then cross their arms and wait for it to start amusing them. After a while, with their circles empty (or in Twitter's case, their 'following' list empty), they declare it a silly thing, perhaps THE SILLIEST THING THAT HAS EVER BEEN, and move back to something with which they're more comfortable.

Well, Dance For Me Monkey Boy doesn't work with this kind of media. It worked for telly, and cinema, where we were passive, and compliant, and didn't have to do much except suspend our disbelief for a couple of hours, but here, if you don't try and engage not just with other people, but with the tools that are now at your disposal, then Google+ is not going to do shit.... more »

A photo of my friend Caroline. Taken in a bar in Cusco, Peru. Isn't super sharp because I had to shoot it at f1.4 and I'd had a few drinks by this stage.

In Lightroom I fixed the colour balance, desaturated and increased vibrancy and contrast. Added a vignette. That was about it.

I love traveling, you meet so many people who you stay friends with for life.

Here's a fun photo for a Friday afternoon. Taken in a safari park in Indonesia a couple of hours outside of Jakarta.

You're not supposed to feed the animals but I bought carrots from kids outside the park and got up close to the free roaming animals.

I don't think I've posted this photo. It's my favourite shot from Machu Picchu and a bit different from most Machu Picchu postcard style shots.

So many great memories from this place and Peru. I was there for a month and have often thought of going back to Lima to settle for a while. If you haven't been make sure you see this place before you die.

War photographers are some of the most amazing people I've encountered, utterly indomitable and irrepressible. Joao Silva of The New York Times lost his legs to a landmine in Afghanistan, and now he is shooting for page one again while on prosthetic legs! Long live news photographers! http://nyti.ms/pYWblO

Hudson River looking towards New Jersey. I took this in the midday sun, to make it a bit moodier I converted to black white and added a bluish/purple tone under Split Tone in Lightroom.
Darkened background and added contrast and clarity to foreground. I think that's about it.
