This first shot taken during my recent trip to Utah and Arizona looks so not typical of a scene from the Southwest, especially when looking at the tones, and only the sliver of a hint of red rock in the background. However, Lone Rock Beach is located on the Utah side of Lake Powell, just after crossing the border from Arizona. This was the only colorful sunset during my trip, so obviously it had to be the easiest place to get to, by far.

Last week I experienced some of the most beautiful scenes I have witnessed, during a photo shoot in Lake Tahoe. However, even with the excitement of bringing home new images, I could not ignore the sadness I felt after being here.

Not that long ago, this particular view could not be experienced. The recent record-low snow pack has resulted in a dramatic drop in the lake’s water level. Because of this, both locals and visitors now had the opportunity to experience the immense beauty of an area once completely under water.

Standing in the middle of all this, taking in the breathtaking show, my goal was to photograph the beauty. However, my biggest hope is that next winter produces a large enough snow pack to return Lake Tahoe to a healthier level.

After some research and a little scouting, I chose this spot for my sunset shoot, during a recent short trip to the Pacific Northwest. I liked all the elements of this scene, especially because it included some colorful fall foliage, which is one of the natural wonders that makes the Gorge such a popular place for photography. While sunset lacked color, I liked the clouds and diffused light, so I chose to shoot using a long exposure to enhance the colors and add interest to the sky.

I have not thought about photographing waterfalls for a long time, but there is something about Spirit Falls that lured me to it. First, the falls were part of my shooting itinerary during my recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. While not super difficult to reach, Spirit Falls offers several challenges. I would not have even found the pathway down to the falls without first noticing a group of people a quarter of a mile from the original trailhead, which is now closed. That group decided not to go down the steep pathway to the falls. Once you reach the waterfall area, the next challenge is to find a composition where it is safe to set up and shoot, while avoiding spray from the powerful falls. All in all, not too crazy difficult, and I am left with a memory of my visit to a truly beautiful and mystical place.

Located in Joshua Tree National Park, it could appear that the two main objects which make up this iconic scene have a natural magnetic attraction.

While my original plan was to photograph here through sunset, before moving on to a different location, I decided to stay and keep shooting during twilight, in an attempt to capture an image that conveys a different mood and feeling to this magical scene.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! I prefer to post a new image every other week when possible, but chose to post this shot one week after the last, to promote a very important message.

A mammogram + early detection can help save a woman’s life. Be educated about fighting breast cancer, and please share the message.

I love long exposure photography. The effects intrigue me, and even though I plan to capture a specific look with each shot, the resulting image often surprises me.

What I attempt to convey using this technique, is the surreal, but not unreal. An image that represents light and color detail in almost every part of the recorded scene.

This shot was taken at the end of summer in Joshua Tree National Park, when the milky way is enhanced by three stars, each of which is the brightest in its constellation. Vega, the brightest star, can be observed in the eastern sky after dusk. Rising below to complete the Summer Triangle is Altair (the Eagle) and Deneb (the Swan).

My first images taken of Joshua Tree National Park were used in my Really Right Stuff product review. It is an honor to work with the RRS company, and publish this review. If you are not yet familiar with RRS camera support products, and are looking for some of the best gear money can buy, I highly recommend checking out their website.

This is one of my new favorite places for photographing seascapes. During my first trip here, I hiked to a few spots with great views, only to end up with a mostly disappointing sunset. Determined to get a shot from this trip, I returned again before sunrise and walked down to this spot. With a small amount of color in the sky, the tide was just right for a long exposure to create this wispy effect, and contrast with the stillness in the foreground. The soft horizon is a result of waves rising above the horizon line, frequently during the exposure.

With a small amount of color in the sky, the tide was just right for a long exposure to create this wispy effect, and contrast with the stillness in the foreground. The soft horizon is a result of waves rising above the horizon line, frequently during the exposure.

I got to visit Joshua Tree National Park for the first time, recently. This California park contains features that make it feel as if you were in Utah or Arizona, and is definitely a gem of a place. I shot during the evening and then again at sunrise, here at the Cholla Cactus Garden. Pathways through the gardens lead to many photo ops that can be photographed equally as well at sunrise and sunset. For this shot, I chose a view facing east, to capture a scene which included the rising sun, as it began to illuminate the horizon.

As I have not shot in a while, I decided to take a look back at some images taken while on past photo-shoots. A few shots caught my eye, including this one photographed at Mono Lake. This particular scene reminded me of how much I appreciate this area for so many reasons. In this case, I remember how much I enjoy the quiet and stillness I have felt, during calm conditions, in this otherwordly and special place.

Have you heard the one about how light changes so dramatically in the Southwest? This is particularly true in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, where the setting sun can quickly transform the landscape into what I sometimes think of as a beautiful red-orange disco. When I compare this shot to my “Lake Powell Clearing Storm” image taken about 45 minutes later, I find it amazing how light transformed this scene so dramatically in such a short time. Having the opportunity to photograph this type of changing light makes any journey so worth it.

My “Bay City Lights” image is published in the current issue of Popular Photography, as part of the magazines, Mentor Series. I took this shot from the Loews Regency Hotel San Francisco, (formerly the Mandarin Oriental Hotel). I am also fortunate that a large canvas rendition of this image was chosen to be displayed in the lobby of the hotel, from where this shot was taken.

This was the second of three shots I took during sunset at Lone Rock Beach. I chose this spot specifically with the plan to shoot in vertical format, because I liked how the lines in the sand and curve of the beach gave the feeling of leading to Lone Rock. This image was taken a short time before my first post from this shoot, just before the sun had set and the sky was close to peak color.

This is another shot from my Southwest trip that I was just a little disappointed with. I decided to shoot in vertical format, to have the option of keeping the cloudless sky area of the image to a minimum. Shooting during twilight eliminates shadows which resulted in even light that revealed the canyon’s textures. In the end I could not complain, as it was a beautiful evening, and I had this special place all to myself.

Camping in this remote area of Grand Canyon National Park was an amazing experience. This view is less than a mile from the trailhead; however the trailhead and campground is reached by driving off-road for 61 miles, from the town of Fredonia, Arizona. The last few miles are much more challenging than the drive to Alstrom Point, and should not be attempted during wet conditions.

Although sunset at Padre Bay is such a beautiful scene to witness, I could only capture a very modest composition and shot on this trip, compared to so many more interesting images photographed from here. However, much of the adventure is experienced during the journey to get here. From Big Water, in Utah, a 23 mile ride on back-roads, passable for most vehicles (in dry conditions) is required. I decided to hike the last two miles to this area of the overlook. Without initially realizing, I set up about 20 feet away from where some of my favorite images of this view have been photographed from. I now know that Alstrom Point is at the top of a list of places I would like to re-visit and photograph with an improved composition and more interesting conditions.

It is just a short 1.7 mile drive from popular Bonsai Rock, to the Chimney Beach parking lot. From here a trail cuts down the cliff to a sign post listing an option to hike south to Secret Cove, or north to Chimney Beach, which was my chosen destination. Both areas feature good photo ops. Once at Chimney Beach, I hopped up onto the trunk of a downed tree and set up to shoot a few long exposures at sunset. I usually do not attach a graduated filter to my 10-stop filter, as that can result in accidentally changing the focus setting. When a 10-stop filter is attached to most lenses, looking through the viewfinder becomes almost impossible. In this instance that decision resulted in having to blend a 150-second shot of the foreground with a separate 120-second image exposed for the sky.

The Lake Tahoe Area is blessed with so much amazing scenery, I believe it would have easily been worthy of National Park status. Of all the photo ops in this area, Bonsai Rock is one of my favorites. With calm winds and still waters around the rock, a long exposure was probably the last technique I would have imagined using, but due to a sudden unexplainable impulse, I decided to attach a 10-stop grad filter to my lens, and subsequently chose this 150 second exposure to process.

Some things are worth fighting for, if only for small reward. This was my third visit to this waterfall, one of my favorite places on the California Coast. I have not yet processed anything from last week's shoot, because those images are probably similar to my previous post. Last week there were about 20 photographers at the falls, but this week I had the place all to myself. I quickly figured out that this was because the waterfall flow had diminished, the sky was mostly boring and there were 35 mph wind gusts. Regardless, I stayed and tried to attempt to capture something a little different. I thought of the title when I returned home. It makes reference to the exposure time, which was 201 seconds.

This seasonal waterfall has been somewhat of a mystery for some time now. Although photographed very well by Leon Turnbull, back around 2008, this location never became over-saturated with photographers, well not until about now, that is. The falls are generated from Phillips Gulch, but due to recent drought now rely heavily on large amounts of rainfall. Even with recent flooding in the area, the waterfall was far from reaching heavy flow.

I arrived here late for sunset, and was not able to set up in the spot to create the composition I had envisioned. This first image is a start, as I was able to capture the moment when the setting sun bathed the rocky cliffs. I did not mind the low tide on this occasion, as it gives a feeling of the falls dropping into a calm pool, below. I am planning to return here, hoping that the elements needed for this shot come together.

Be careful what you wish for: I wished to go back to Botany Bay, and shoot during high tide; however this high tide coincided with a full moon, which created a Super High Tide. The tide extended well past the beach, flooding the path walkway almost all the way to the trailhead. This resulted in having to hike the half-mile trail in above knee-high water. Once on the beach, I hiked along the edge of the wooded area, and was lucky enough to find a downed tree trunk wide enough to fit me and my tripod. The park was closed the following three days, due to dangerous high tides.

*OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH*

With my last new image for the month, I am hoping to make more people aware of the importance of regular mammograms. If discovered early enough, a woman can beat cancer. I did not know this, until witnessing it firsthand. It made me realize how important it is to share this message.

The gathering at North Lake takes place at sunrise, during fall in the Eastern Sierras. I arrived here while it was still dark, and was greeted by an early season snow storm. Using my headlamp to navigate the area, I quickly found a spot to set up, just before the place became overrun with photographers. The storm broke for a short time during sunrise, allowing for a small window of opportunity to capture this subtle High Sierra Mountain light.

**October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month**

With each image I post this month, I am reaching out to everyone to help increase awareness of this disease. Please check out the link and spread the word. http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awareness-month
Detecting this disease in its early stages could save a life!

I used a long exposure for this image taken a short while before sunset, during my first visit to North Lake, which sits at an elevation of about 9300 feet, in the Sabrina Basin. As it was windy, I used the long exposure to further enhance movement in the clouds and foreground trees. I used this technique hoping that my image would capture the feeling of an autumn dance.

As I do not currently have any new images to post, I decided to process a shot taken on a recent trip to Mammoth Hot Creek. For this image, I used a Rokinon 14mm lens, which does not accommodate the use of traditional filters, so this was a good opportunity to practice the Photoshop image blending technique. I blended two shots; one exposed for the sky with a second shot exposed for the foreground. I liked the way the lens gave this scene a feeling of an expansive prairie view, and for a considerably inexpensive lens, I am happily surprised with the optics quality it is capable of producing.

This is the third image I processed of the Lupine wildflower displays, in the Lake Tahoe Area. As the displays were so stunning, I wanted to photograph them in as many different lighting situations as possible. This shot of the lupine fields was photographed at sunset, using the front-lighting behind me. I waited until the sun was low, to maximize the lighting effect. Although not specifically required for this shot, I used 2 ND filters to darken the sky enough to further enhance the glow of the wildflowers, making the lupines the prime focus of the image.

I arrived at Mono Lake’s South Tufa Area, hoping to find a composition to photograph with the Milky Way. I walked around for about an hour, but nothing inspired me. I was certainly not inspired to photograph a fire burning at nearby Yosemite National Park; however my attention shifted after looking across the lake toward the park’s Eastern border. The smoke from the fire had taken on an interesting shape, especially as it reflected in the water. The sun was also beginning to set, which added an element of color to the plumes of smoke. I chose a couple of compositions to photograph this event, deciding not to use any filters for this first image.

My thoughts are with all of the brave firefighters, law enforcement, and everyone affected by wild fires.

I had been planning this shot for a while, although I did not know if my final image would be a vertical or horizontal composition. In the end, neither worked on this occasion; however after sitting by the lake all night long, I wanted to preserve something that spoke of what I had envisioned. For this, I blended a shot of the pier pilings taken at sunset, with one shot of the night sky photographed at about 1:30 a.m. Originally, I wanted to include a foreground featuring a longer exposure, so I waited until just before sunrise to photograph the pier again. Unfortunately, both predawn and early morning light was very flat.

I took this shot about 30 minutes after my previous post. Even though the sky was not too cloudy it seemed to take forever for the sun to break through, and this was the main shot I was going for. The breeze made it difficult to use the aperture needed to capture a defined sunburst, so I decided to blend two shots in Zerene Stacker software, in an attempt to at least allow me to work with an acceptably sharp final image. The biggest thrill of this shoot was that I had never seen lupines look as good as this. I was lucky to be here during prime wildflower peak time, as I stood amongst lupines that were over five feet tall.

Bullfrog Lake – Kings Canyon National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I would say that photographing this view was one of my top three reasons for moving to Northern California. The entire experience including the hike, camping under the stars and capturing this shot was definitely a highlight during my time here.

This image is published in the July 2015 issue of Outdoor Photographer Magazine, as part of the National Parks Pro Guide. If you read the article, it may make sense to know that I was originally asked to provide two images, of which one would be chosen for the piece. Yes, the other image was a scene photographed in Dusy Basin. :-))

I hesitated to post an image that I did not envision this way; but this trip was if nothing else, very memorable. I planned to do some night photography during this trip, but man-made light seemed to be present at every location I chose. I arrived at Convict Lake just after midnight. As I was driving into the parking area, two mountain lions approached my vehicle, one on each side. I stopped and put the car in park, and watched both lions until they disappeared into the brush. That was the first time I got to see mountain lions in the wild.

As for this shot, I was shooting toward the west-southwest. The sky to the east featured an amazing thunderstorm, while beautiful sunset color filled the northwestern sky. Two sayings speak to this shot. First, the one about a picture can’t do a scene justice. Standing there in the driving hail, witnessing multiple lightning bolts was quite the experience, but as hard as I tried I could not capture one bolt. The main part of the storm cleared right at sunset, so I was disappointed by the lack of color in the sky; however I was happy to come away with one shot from this quick but memorable trip.

My decision to shoot at Lake Tahoe was based purely on the storm in the forecast, and the chance of it clearing at sunset. This brings me to the second saying that came to mind. Be careful what you wish for…Yea, right!

This is my third image from a dramatic winter sunrise in Santa Cruz, California. For this version of the scene, I composed a little outside of my comfort zone. Ignoring the standard rule of thirds composition, I decided to tilt the camera up to include more of the colorful sky. I kept the lens at a wide enough setting and waited for the tide to recede enough so I could also capture the reflected glow in the foreground.

One positive to bending the rules of composition, is it can allow you to capture more versions of a scene, and for this particular scene I wanted to make sure that I preserved the moments.

Mesquite Dunes – Death Valley National Park

The first thing I thought about while planning this trip was how much I was looking forward to photographing the “pristine” Mesquite Dunes. However, when I arrived there for my first sunset shoot, I was somewhat horrified to find so many people on the dunes. While I agree without question that anyone else has the right to be in one of these areas, my issue was with the way this area was being treated. On this particular occasion there were about a hundred school kids on the dunes, being allowed to treat the area like a playground. I thought hard about this trying to find the appropriate answer.

My question is this. Is it OK for people to treat National Parks and scenic areas like a playground?

Outdoor Photographer Magazine March 2015

My first camera was a point-and-shoot model that cost me about $50.00. All I wanted to do with this camera was capture colorful city scenes in Atlanta and New Orleans. Wanting to improve my shooting technique, I decided to go to the book store and buy a photo magazine to study from; (a book was too much effort back then). While browsing magazines, I was in absolute awe of the crisp colorful landscape images printed in Outdoor Photographer Magazine, especially images from my first favorite photographer, Galen Rowell. This was the magazine that sparked a great passion, so it is definitely a big thrill being published within the pages where the journey began.

Sol Duc Forest – Olympic National Park

Although photographed at least ten years ago, this image remains one of my personal favorite captures. While I continually seek out landscapes to photograph that can potentially produce dramatic color and light, this scene always reminds me that it was the simple peace and tranquility found in nature that originally fueled my passion for landscape photography.

For this image, I used a polarizer and a long exposure to blur the water. My intention was to convey no drama, but instead the feeling of ethereal calm I experienced during my visit here.

This month I visited Death Valley for the first time. I was not immediately wowed by this National Park, at least not as much as all of the other parks I have visited. I could tell that visiting this area would typically take some extra care and planning, especially for photography.

When I arrived at Badwater Basin for my planned sunset shoot, I was immediately disappointed to find that the salt flats were much more of a muddy tone than the clean white photographic tone I was hoping for. I was however, excited to see this fairly dramatic and colorful sunset sky.

Although I left Death Valley with only a few acceptable images, I had definitely begun to warm up to this enchanting place.

"Rush Hour"
Alternate Definition: Photographing a rocky coast between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, when the tide and surf are rushing in both directions.

This was the image I took at sunset, during my last trip. While waiting to take the shot, I realized that high tide was between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, so I attempted to capture the moment when the tide came in crashing over the rocks, at the same time as the surf swept back into the ocean. The resulting image was one of those "Rush Hour" ocean moments.

Breast Cancer Awareness*Reach Out

I wanted to do something a little different, and share a story with my latest image.

Just over a year ago a mother moved to the U.S. to be closer to her son. For years and for various reasons she had not taken the time to make any medical appointments. Now in the U.S. she was encouraged to take better care of herself and sign up for a medical plan. This led to her having a routine mammogram followed by a biopsy, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Learning that she had breast cancer was a shock and very scary; however in this case the fortunate thing was the cancer was detected early, at stage one. The oncology doctor scheduled the woman for the necessary lumpectomy surgery, and after some recovery time and tests it was confirmed that the woman had beaten breast cancer.

This is so important and means a lot to me. Cancer is a very hard word to hear, but if caught early, the chances of survival can increase enough to save many lives.

Natural Bridges State Beach – Santa Cruz

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I set out while it was still dark to photograph the sunrise part of this overnight trip. Knowing that the tide would be high at this location, my original plan was to capture a wide-angle vertical image featuring a big surf-action foreground. After looking up and seeing the cloud cover I hurried down to the beach to find a spot to set up. The tide was so high I had to set-up far from the arch, and using a 16-35mm
wide-angle lens resulted in my field of view being too wide. Wanting to capture a tighter composition of this scene, I realized that I needed to move closer and stand in part of the surf. Every so often waves came crashing in above my knees, causing my tripod to shift in the sand frequently. Photographing fall color from Luther Pass was not the main focus of this trip. I was returning home from Convict Lake, where Mother Nature had just provided some of the craziest conditions I have witnessed. Still, I realized that so many other people have gone through far, far worse. This then led me to my current conclusion; for all of nature’s wonder and beauty, nature can be cruel more often than it can be beautiful. I will however, always appreciate its beauty.

On the way home I traveled over Monitor Pass and Carson Pass, before reaching this view from Luther Pass. After shooting from several different vantage points, I chose this 3-shot pano to be my one saving grace from this trip.

As photography has taken a backseat for the last six weeks, and I have not been on a photo shoot since South Carolina, I decided to look at some old files and choose a shot to post. I have often looked at this particular image which I took back at the beginning of the year, but always decided to pass it up. What was different this time was I thought of a title for the image first and decided that was a good enough reason to process this shot for posting.

I remember being excited that morning when I noticed this sky developing. Unfortunately, due to the darkness I could not find a good spot to capture this scene from. After hiking around for about an hour, I hurried back to the road with only enough time to quickly set up and take a few exposures before the color in the sky started to disappear. With no time to attach a filter to my lens, my plan was to select an aperture of f/8, and underexpose... more »

With no time to attach a filter to my lens, my plan was to select an aperture of f/8, and underexpose enough, so I could record the fiery color in the sky.

Botany Bay - Edisto Island - ACE Basin - South Carolina

This was a very memorable trip! Apart from a thousand mosquito bites, everything else went exactly as planned. Even though I wanted to get to this location as soon as possible, it was a good thing that I took the time to do some quick last minute planning before heading out. The enchanting half-mile stretch of beach where the dead trees are located is not exactly a walk up to location. Also, Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area seems to close frequently for days in a row, due to the various hunting activities here.

I planned for sunrise photography at this location, but still drove down to the area from Charleston on the afternoon I arrived, so I would not have trouble finding the beach in the dark. I planned for sunrise photography at this location, but still drove down to the area from Charleston on the afternoon I arrived, so I would not have trouble finding the beach in the dark. If you go, be careful driving down Hwy 17 while it’s dark, as there is lots of wildlife by the side of the road. Young deer sometimes wander onto the highway, during the quiet early morning hours.

Once you arrive at the entrance to the well hidden WMA, there is an electronic gate which is usually programmed to open between half an hour and one hour before sunrise. Once you arrive at the dirt parking lot, you will then walk about a half-mile to the beach. The walk is flat, but the green wetlands are very beautiful in their own right. While walking on the boardwalk in the dark, be careful not to step on any crabs, and I would recommend not petting any of the gators.

My one small regret is not photographing other compositions, especially isolating the small tree on the right in this image. These three trees are a favorite composition, and I thought the footprint detail and photographer on the left side of this scene added interesting elements to the shot. The photographer kept fairly still during this 210 second exposure, reinforcing my feeling that it is easy to become mesmerized by a composition here.

"Now I am Free"

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

A very busy summer schedule has kept me away from social media for a while, so it feels good to be able to post a new image again.

I came across this place completely by accident while trying to decide on a future international trip, and immediately knew that no matter where this place was located, I just had to photograph here. Now, this beautiful and unusual beach has instantly been added to my favorite places list. This is one of those locations I could easily photograph every day, for at least a month.

I will include all the details about this magical place in my next post.

I took this image in the spring of 2013. The lupine display was nicer last year, at least in terms of fuller displays, and fewer bare patches. The problem last year was the sky was completely uninteresting, during my visit. Seeing this, I decided not to wait around a couple of hours for sunset, but instead just take in the view before driving home.

Before leaving, I took a shot of the scene to help me plan for a return trip this year. As the wind was mostly calm, I chose a ten second exposure, to obtain enhanced color and smoothness in the water. It took a while for me to add this image to my website and post it here, because the shot felt a bit random. However, even if not overly interesting, I used Capture One software to help me process my image and get the most out of this pretty field of lupines; one of many that lined the banks of Folsom Lake, during the spring of 2013.

At the end of my journey to the other side, I stuck around to photograph the sunrise. However, even though it was now seven hours since I photographed the Milky Way, this was still very much part of that same journey.

I stitched three separate shots of the sun rising behind Half Dome to create this image. The three shots used to create this image were also the same three shots used in the making of my previous post. “Journey to the Other Side” was made using a total of eleven shots.

Glacier Point – Yosemite National Park

I could easily include a very large narrative with this image, describing technical information and the journey it took to be able to complete this shot. While far from technically great, I am very happy that I captured this image during my first attempt to photograph the Milky Way.

I have admired this form of photography for a long time, and am now very excited to make this part of my passion. Whether you put little or great effort in to this kind of photography, the adventure and results can be memorable.

I decided that I wanted to put great effort into my first shot. After a night and sunrise of shooting, it took about two hours of post-processing to complete an image which came pretty close to what I had envisioned.

This is the third image I have made using Zerene Stacker software. After improving my technique, I hope to use this software to produce better and more dynamic images. This particular shot was taken during the time I had before getting in to the main reason for this trip, which was more of a scouting and learning mission for a new project.

Typically used during post-processing of macro photography, Zerene image stacking software processes multiple images taken of a single composition to create a completely in-focus output image. Being a Landscape Photographer, I was curious if this…

Spring Lupines – Folsom Lake Recreation Area

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/
I photographed this location last year, but due to the completely blank sky I chose not to post any of the images I captured. The sky was not much more interesting on this occasion, but not wanting to go away empty handed I attempted to get a little creative with the available light by composing the scene to include the sun setting behind a background tree.

I have just posted a new product review on my website. The review is for software that I do not believe is well known in the landscape photography community. Depending on what kind of subject you photograph, this software could be a great addition to your creative workflow. The software was used to process the lupine sunset image.

Merced River - Yosemite National Park

Posting an image of this scene next to one of Hanalei Bay, makes me realize how lucky I am to live in a country that contains such a beautiful and diverse landscape. Just like many places in our world, stress and sadness can be common when experiencing the hassles of modern day life, and knowing of the many tragedies and suffering that occur around the world.

I took this shot last December, and more than anything else, I can remember the absolute peace I felt while witnessing the serene stillness. However, a peek over a shoulder every now and then to make sure there were no restless hungry bears around still seemed to be a good idea at the time.
