A few days back +Jacob Morgan put together a rather interesting article where he talked about The Future of Work and what it is all about. To quote:

"No, the future of work is not about replacing sharepoint and email, it’s about re-defining what work means, why we work, and how we work"

Great point, indeed, although in order to help redefine what work means and where we would want to take it from here, we would probably be off to a good start by challenging the status quo of traditional collaboration tools and what they have meant for the corporate world. Something tells me the sooner we start challenging that status quo (Including that one of email), the sooner we would be able to start defining the path of the future of work in terms of becoming a successful Open Business ...

If we keep doing the same things as before, but with a new set ofsoci... more »

And continuing further with those golden gems I keep bumping into  through my Twitter timeline that I would want to capture across, here's one of the most profound I have seen in a long while. And yet so short, so effective and so straight to the point, that there are no further comments I can add to it:

"My experience is that we have just two choices: love or fear." - my therapist, yesterday by +Mitch Anthony

Guess that's all about it. Which side would you want to be on eventually? :)

I guess they just don't make video clips like this one anymore, right? :)

Here is another interesting and rather thought-provoking article that claims how nowadays we just don't respond to emails anymore like we used to and it lists a good number of reasons why not. I can imagine how for plenty of people it would be rather accurate on how they work through their email backlog.

In my case, since I still receive a few emails per week, I look into it in a slightly different way. I still read all of the emails that people send me, more than anything else because I always try to figure out if I can help or not. However, what I do different is that I hardly ever respond to emails through email. I find other ways.

More than anything else because there is always this rather well known universal law that the more email you send, the more email you get back! and that means that Inbox Zero, if anything, is just a myth.

However, if you startre... more »

It's been a rather long day, and an even longer week at work (Fun, but exhausting nevertheless), and here I am, still trying to figure out how I'm going to dive back into Twitter as part of my daily dose of serendipity, genius, witty and smart short reflections.

Somehow it seems to have fallen out of my immediate work radar and can't figure out how I'll be getting it back. Will need to figure out something, since I miss it quite a bit ...

I think I also know why it has fallen down and perhaps I'll be able to share some more on it tomorrow, when my head clears out a bit :) But one of the things I always wanted to do was to capture those golden nuggets, those precious little gems folks share across on Twitter that you know you won't see them again, but that they weight their wisdom in pure gold. So I thought, why not use G+ for that, right?

Here's an interesting article that I thought I would share over here as well to provide a different point of view: that one of contrarians. This time around on a piece that claims how email is going to be around for a long while with interesting quotes like this one:

"For knowledge workers, the growth in the amount and diversity of communications will increase information overload and demand more, not less, time be devoted to managing business communications."

And here I am thinking how it's never been about information overload, but bad filtering, as Clay Shirky once well stated.

I keep wondering when are we going to free ourselves up from the expectation generated by email that we need to read everything AND respond to everything everywhere? It's about time, don't you think?

That's what flows are all about ... Theg... more »

Software isn't Friendship

Let's get back to treating tools like G+      and others like what they are: our way of connecting with and gathering the information that we want.

Let's untangle our "you don't follow me" emotional problems from our choices of who we circle and who we don't.

Goodness! Want to know what it feels like being insignificant and pondering about the trials and tribulations of each and everyone of us, human beings in our day to day ramblings?

Then watch this ... sit back, turn up the volume of your device, and think about it: How much time do we have got left? Or, in order words, are we running out of time to focus on the things that really matter?

Absolutely brilliant!

One of these days I need to see if I can find out what's the main reason why one of all time favourite singers / performers, Loreena McKennitt, is not on Spotify.

How I wish she was in there! Specially, on weekend evenings, while chillaxing and doing some casual reading on the Social Web... With a glass of red win & something to nibble it just doesn't get any better than that!

A fellow colleague, and good friend of mine, +Pierre Milcent, pointed me into this great article published by +Lucien Engelen where he has declared he's stopped using email for work and has been succeeding at it for over a month. Wonderful achievement knowing how tough it was for me as well to make the first few moves on the first three weeks, where I almost gave up on giving up on email.

Best part of the article shared by Lucien? Well, how more and more folks are starting to question and challenge the status quo of email in the corporate environment to realise it's no longer the kind of communications and collaboration that it once was and how it's probably a good time as well to stop, break the chain and be done and dealt with the inertia of day to day interactions.

Lucien's progress is another example that it can be done! Well done, Lucien! Keep it up!:)... more »

This is one of those articles for which I would appreciate if, once and for all, people would make the distinction between email as a content repository and email as a social messaging and notification system where email transforms itself back into what it used to be 40 years ago: BACN, that is, an alert system of content that is stored elsewhere.

Therefore your email client turns itself into a rather powerful content aggregator, a la RSS feed reader, except that you can execute directly from there, but let's not forget, email is no longer the container, but the messenger

5 years ago, before I gave up on corporate email, I could surely relate to plenty of the anxiety reflected on this particular article, not just when responding to email, but also when sending it across. All in all while pondering about what people may respond back to, or not... Interestingly enough, when I moved into social networks and started depending more and more on them for work, that anxiety disappeared. It's now gone.

And if I would have provide an answer as to why, probably how for me the Inbox used to be a lake where you could drown pretty easy. With social networking tools there is a flow; a flow of information passing by that helps you understand that, if you miss something, and if that something is important & relevant, you will eventually bump into it over and over again till you tackle it accordingly.

First album, of course, on Gran Canaria, where I am hoping to show how it is a whole lot more than just beaches and sunshine (Yeah, we got those, too! hehe)

To date, it's one of the most accurate and up to date interviews I have held on the topic. It was also a huge honour and a privilege to be interviewed by Rudy who did a superb piece of work on the interview to capture the main key points as to why I got started with it all in the first place.

Ok, here is something that's been in my mind for a long long time ... If we are capable of this (And so much more in terms of extreme positives!), why can't we just be like that day in day out throughout the whole day?

Through +Mathew Ingram , here's an absolutely wonderful video clip (Get your hankies ready!!) that clearly reminds me of that basic KM principle +Dave Snowden blogged about over 4 years ago on Rendering Knowledge > http://cognitive-edge.com/blog/entry/5576/rendering-knowledge

I have tried. Goodness, I have tried for a good three months period and somehow Tumblr doesn't seem to keep sticking around with me for whatever reason. I know it's where a good chunk of microblogging is happening nowadays, but somehow I keep failing at adjusting it into my day to day social interactions to share content over there... What's more interesting is that I haven't been back to it for nearly 2 months and I don't miss it...

Think I will just stick around with the Big Three (IBM Connections [work related], Google Plus and Twitter) and focus on those. Next to the blog and my Flickr account, of course. They all seem to be the ones where I'm getting the most value nowadays ...

Perhaps I will revisit it during the summer, Tumblr, that is, and see it is grows on me again, like it did at the beginning of the year...

Excuse me, I think I may have missed the memo, but am I the only one who is gutted, rather upset and a tad annoyed about reading articles like that one (In Spain, as an example, latest figures show under 25 unemployment rate is now peaking at 57%!), when we are about to enter an era where the main business problem out there is a rather ageing population starting to retire and not have anyone, or enough young talent behind, to facilitate that knowledge transfer?

Seriously?

Am I the only one seeing the massive disruption that's just about to unleash around the corner, if we don't start doing something more than just blame a younger workforce not being qualified enough? Seriously?

We can certainly do better, don't you think?

When I first got started with diving into the world of social networking, back in 2001, there was something back then that I learned that has stuck with me for 12 years and still going strong. Perhaps one of the best pieces of advice I learned along the way, although not through first hand experience, though. I can't remember where I got that pearl of wisdom...

That piece of advice was to never write, blog, (nowadays, I guess) tweet, plus, and what not, whenever you are angry, upset, frustrated or seriously hit in your motivations & beliefs.

Well, here I am, still diving really deep doing plenty of soul searching at the moment... Not don with it just yet. Please do bear with me while I re-find it again, ok? I know it won't be too long...  #kthxbai   #tips   #advice   #pearlsofwisdom   #socialweb   #purpose   #meaning   #followyourpassion   #meraki

You know, there are days where one senses they will mark a before and an after on what really matters for you and what you are passionate about, i.e. what really drives you day in day out, and today has been one of those days... Can't share much on it yet, but it will probably re-surface again over the course of time, when I am ready.

Either way, I can summarise it as tomorrow will be another day, if you know what I mean ...

Oh, if you would want to have a bit more of a graphical representation of that reflection shared above, here it goes...

Well, that was it for me. I finally decided to stop making use of Instagram, despite the superb user experience and engagement on the commentary, and, instead, move the Photo Archive over here in Google Plus to help avoid spreading thinner again.

From now onwards, I'll be uploading snapshots from my smartphone over here, (Occasionally, not to worry), while I will keep using my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lsr/) for the better quality pictures I keep taking with my regular camera.

See how it goes... For now, here's the archive with one of my favourite snapshots showing up front! :-D

Oh, shiny! Look at what the postman brought me this morning in the mail ... The absolutely delightful and rather inspiring Visual Metaphors 2013 calendar from +Joachim Stroh! And January is off to a superb start already with this priceless quote:

"meraki: (v) to do something with soul, creativity, or love; to put something of yourself into your work"

Just brilliant! Nothing like being inspired by your networks, don't you think? For those folks interested, check out this Plus Post from Joachim himself > https://plus.google.com/100641053530204604051/posts/MVgbMze3khv with more details about how you, too, could get your copy. It's totally worth it!

Another day at work, another week pretty packed up! Currently preparing for my first business trip of the year, to Orlando, FL, to attend and participate at IBM Connect 2013 where I will be speaking in 3 different sessions on #socbiz  and while I continue to re-define my own user experience with Google Plus, specially, when I am on the road, a question came up into my mind for which I couldn't find an answer just yet... So I thought my networks over here perhaps may know about it...

Does anyone know where do the video posts go besides just Google Plus? You know you can post text and images, right, but you can also record yourself and share that as a post. Is it stored elsewhere than in G+, like YouTube, or wherever else that we can then grab and share elsewhere outside G+, like you could do with Google Plus Hangouts On Air, for instance? What do you think? Is it possible?

Thanks... more »

Loving having the 4 extra buttons on the Homepage to navigate through your most frequent circles that you would get to visit on a regular basis vs. the 2 it was showing before. Makes it soooo much easier to navigate through your fave ones! That new? capability reminds me of One50, Two50, and TheRest from this blog post I wrote in July 2011 > http://kcy.me/45hw along now with an additional circle I created where I have got everyone from my various circles, versus just the stream, since the latter seems to skip posts a la Facebook...

Absolutely, _loving it!_ W00t!

Just browsed through my Photos section and realised why I haven't shared many more pictures in there than what I'm doing in Flickr, for instance: due to the inability of embedding the snapshots outside of Google Plus, like I do, for instance, on my blog posts where I share, at least, one picture, if not more, by embedding it nicely with the lovely HTML code generated by Flickr itself ... Does anyone know whether Google Plus does that as well? (I couldn't find that feature when I took a look into it just recently...) or whether it plans to extend that Sharing capability?

Otherwise, I am not sure I would be sharing many more photos over here, which I think would be a real shame ...

While catching up with weeks of skimming through posts over here in Google Plus, here is an observation that's been bugging me for a little while ... Am I the only one that finds it a bit too awkward to share over here, in Google Plus, the link to a blog post from someone else (Other than your own posts!) to steal the thunder with the comments landing in your reference post rather than in the original blog post? Specially, when talking about blogging?

Not sure why, but it just doesn't feel right... Thinking this year I will focus on commenting more on interesting blog posts I bump into and leave Google Plus for what's very good at: conversations

What do you think? Way off base? Or are bloggers happy to see their conversations flying away into no-man's land... I can see how one would want to promote their own blog posts, but those of others to capture their... more »

Seriously, Google, I come back from vacation, I decide to update my GMail password, which eventually updates everything else in GOOG apps like Google Reader and what not and I cannot longer access Reader on iPad Apps like Reeder, Feedly, personal Mail and so forth? Seriously, why do we make it so hard on ourselves? And now? No longer access to my GReader on iOS devices. Really?

Any tips, anyone? [Thanks!]

While it's going to be almost impossible to join and participate in every single community (in a rather active manner) that I am finding interesting over here, in G+, in the last few days, while catching up, I joined a bunch of them... Hoping to chime in along into some of the conversations... One thing for sure is that I'm starting to see how G+ Communities may well be the last nail in the coffin for me to dive into LinkedIn and LinkedIn Groups... Who knew, eh?

January 20th 1997, my first day at IBM... 16 years later, the IBM adventure continues ...

[So now that my extended vacation is over & that I have finally adjusted to full stealth mode at work time to dive back into the social grid with Google Plus, Twitter and the like... Did anyone miss me over here or did people move on? ... j/k #goodtobeback  ]

Ohhh, and one more update before I go offline for the rest of the evening ... While I have been away treasuring The Joy of Business Travelling, amongst several other things > http://www.elsua.net/2012/09/25/the-joy-of-business-travelling/ (Last biz trip of the year this week! Yay!!) I have noticed how G+ has added what promises to be one of my favourite features du jour by far: Google Plus Communities. Been reading a lot about them already, while going through the huge influx of invites to join communities from fellow plussers, too! So guess I'll need to also do a bit of an exercise of selecting those group spaces where I feel I can contribute AND learn the most from and join those... Let's see how many I end up with ... Spreading thinner once again has taken a new meaning!

By the way, am I the only one thinking that Google Plus Communities could pretty much nail thei... more »
