Lack of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support in AOSP is becoming a major issue to purchasers of Android devices. Looks like I may need to buy my wife an iPhone so she can use her Polar H7 heartrate monitor. Fitbit flex and many other auxiliary devices are using this protocol. Demand for this is pretty strong in the community (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33371) - what's the holdup?

Information on comet PanSTARRS, now viewable in the northern hemisphere just after sunset. It is about as bright as the big dipper stars (so fairly bright).

Google Reader's only crime was that it competes with Google+ as a method many use to get updates from websites. I used it quite intensively in my tech blogging past. Unfortunately it fills a hole not many other web apps could, I'll probably move over to http://www.newsblur.com/.

Purchased the physical version of the game, partially because I know that launch day server issues frequently cause problems with downloading. But with EA's "You Must Be Online At All Times" DRM, it makes it impossible to play without them keeping up their part of this bargain with satan.

Proud to announce a project I've been working on the past few months. XDA is now using Swappa as it's official marketplace for buying, selling and trading phones. Buying OR selling on eBay has its pitfalls, and this was simply a better option. So happy to be working with these guys.

Just when you the think the mobile phone OS landscape has solidified between iOS and Android, multiple promising new operating systems leap onto the landscape. And I'm not talking Windows Phone OS ;). It is great to see Linux (and BSD) underpinning so many of those, from Sailfish to Ubuntu Phone and Firefox OS.

I was excited when I saw the Netgear NeoTV Prime with Google TV announced at CES. Then I see it requires a set top box to provide live TV. Where are the GoogleTVs with Cablecard compatibility? Why do you have to get a Cablebox to get live TV?

If you use CyanogenMod and specifically nightly builds, check out CyanDelta. It downloads just the changes from the nightly updates, creates a new zip, and installs it on your phone automatically. Awesome.

For those who had widespread power outages during the hurricane which caused their wireless towers to lose power, or for that matter at any time in the past, how did your wireless carrier handle the power outage?

I'll share my experience here from Hurricane Irene last year. We lost power at about 3:30am. The cell phone towers, which I believe are on the same power grid, still worked fine for about 8 hours, when the signal switched from 3G to edge. The edge lasted about another hour, then totally went offline. 

Do cell towers typically have generators? Battery backups? Both?

This is a big FAIL for consumers. You now not only have to pay for Cable Services, but also rent a box or CableCard for each connected TV. This only impacts "Public Broadcast" channels - performing crucial informational services (in addition to entertainment) such as ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and FOX. Having followed this for a while and even writing a letter to the FCC supporting the opposing position, this is a huge disappointment. 

Have I mentioned that the FCC is a recruitment center for the Telecom industry? Michael Powell, former Chair of the FCC, is now President of the  NCTA. Former FCC Commissioner Meredith Baker moved directly from the FCC to a top government affairs job at Comcast/NBC Universal, spawning some congressional inquiries but no action.

Ok, so Slingbox has these new boxes which provide higher quality video - which will not be enough for many to upgrade their existing systems. Why do they still tie themselves into the DVR? Why not take it full-swing and just go with a Cablecard and do DVR on the box?
